Crystal Bowersox Scoring Hometown Radio Play With ‘Holy Toledo’

Local radio station began playing ‘American Idol’ frontrunner’s song last week By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX There’s still a month left to go on “American Idol,” but frontrunner Crystal Bowersox is already reaping the benefits of a winner. As of last week, Bowersox could be heard twice a day on the radio on Toledo, Ohio’s 101.5-FM , which is located near her hometown of Elliston, Ohio, crooning the original acoustic folk ballad “Holy Toledo.” Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “We have Crystal pride around here,” said Tom Cook, the station’s program director. “It’s not just a radio thing, it’s a cool thing for the people around here to see someone with that kind of talent on a national platform.” While assembling a Bowersox video page copy of Crystal’s performances from the show, someone at the rock station noticed the homage to the singer’s hometown and brought it to Cook’s attention. “I thought, ‘It’s not just a great song, but it mentions our city!’,” he said about the contemplative tune. After dubbing the song from a YouTube video, Cook put it into rotation on May 20 and it’s been getting around 15 spins a week since then. So far, he said the station has gotten a number of curious calls about the tune, but no contact from any of the half dozen or more Bowersox family members who live in the area. “I hope they feel good about it,” said Cook. “From her perspective I would think it would be cool to have a radio station in your hometown playing your song.” Though no other stations have picked up the song as far as he knows, “Holy Toledo” has gotten enough spins to make to it to #90 on the “American Idol” airplay chart, according to USA Today , making MamaSox the only one of this year’s contestants to crash the chart. American Idol Performance of the Season: Crystal Bowersox, "People Get Ready"

It started a capella – and it ended with as much praise as an American Idol contestant has received in years. Forget the judges for a moment. Check out what a group of impartial observers had to say about Crystal Bowersox’s rendition of “People Get Ready” last night , which brought the singer to such tears that she could scarcely finish. MTV.com : “It was the best performance of the season.” Salon.com : “Forget about goose bumps! I had been filled with the Holy Spirit and was jumping up and down in my humble living room screaming, ‘Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Alleluia, Alleluia!’ I became a born-again believer that “American Idol” could actually be redeemed, saved from its lost and depraved ways by its savior, Crystal Bowersox .” GQ.com : “As frontrunner skeptics, it took Bowersox’s near collapse into heavy sobbing to finally convince us that her season-long steely calm was not professionalism, but rather a coping device. Despite the crumbling reputation, this is still a big deal, this American Idol show. Crystal seems to know that now.” DID YOU MISS THE PERFORMANCE? OR CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH IT AGAIN? SEE BELOW. American Idol Recap: Who ‘Inspired’ Us Most?

Last night, American Idol battered us with selections from its most syrupy set list yet: Inspirational Songs. Run, Bowersox! Rod Stewart wouldn’t touch half of this nonsense in a “Great American Songbook” package, and lord, that says it all. Still, we got seven performances, seven consultations with the catatonic Alicia Keys, and one obvious winner. Our rankings and video after the jump.

Crystal Bowersox: From Chicago Hopeful To ‘American Idol’ Front-Runner

MamaSox has had her ups and downs, but the season-nine crown seems to be hers to lose. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX As Crystal Bowersox heads into inspirational-songs week on “American Idol,” she’s the one contestant who seems to be rousing positive energy from viewers in the midst of this season of unexceptional singers and humdrum personalities. The “Idol” audience embraced the 24-year-old mother — MamaSox, as she is now known — once she become a crooner-to-watch in Hollywood and has stuck with her through illness, controversy and some killer performances. We first met Bowersox during the auditions in Chicago , the city that also gave us Katelyn Epperly and Lee Dewyze. Dressed in jeans and a suede vest with her guitar strapped to her side, Bowersox sang “Piece of My Heart,” a tune made famous by Janis Joplin. Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “Why did you wear a guitar?” guest judge Shania Twain asked before Bowersox began. “It’s kind of a comfort blanket for me,” she answered, launching into a soulful take on the tune that had Simon Cowell smiling and Kara DioGuardi welcoming her to Hollywood Week. During her brief time onscreen, we didn’t find out much about her. She was ID’d onscreen as a “musician/mom” and walked away from the audition with her young son in one hand and her golden ticket in the other. The contestant who people were talking about most the next day was Katelyn Epperly, and there was little indication that Crystal would soon become the show’s top seed. If anything, she reminded us of season six’s Tami Gosnell, a free spirit with blues in her soul who soared in her audition but was booted in Hollywood Week. Bowersox would not suffer the same fate. To begin, her rock- and soul-flecked rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” had her fellow contestants singing backup vocals from their auditorium seats. While Andrew Garcia’s breakout take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” had everybody talking, we still anointed MamaSox as an early front-runner . To finish off her time in Hollywood, Crystal nailed her cover of Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy.” “I feel like I can surprise all of you,” she told the judges as they welcomed her into the top 24. “I’m very glad I came.” Bowersox got off to an unremarkable start during the live shows with a harmonica-assisted take on “Hand in My Pocket.” Cowell accused her of sounding like a subway busker. The next week, an illness forced her into the hospital , and her place on the show suddenly became uncertain. Would she recover enough to perform, or would this be the end of Crystal’s run? It turned out to be just the beginning. After a last-minute switch between the men and women’s performances, Bowersox once again took the stage and delivered a beauty: a gospel-tinged version of “As Long as I Can See the Light.” “I feel good,” she said. “I’m a tough cookie.” Did that cookie almost crumble at one point? Later on in the season, during a post-performance chat with the judges, she admitted that she’d been dealing with personal issues. Then last week, Ryan Seacrest said Bowersox was about to quit the show until he talked her out of it. But Bowersox appeared to hit back against that report when she tweeted , “Media is a funny thing. Stretched and skewed and far from the truth.” What actually happened? We’ll likely have to wait until season’s end to get the real story. By that point, will America have crowned Bowersox as season nine’s champ? All signs are pointing in that direction, but one never knows when it comes to the allegiances of the voting public. For every front-runner who wins, like season four’s Carrie Underwood, there’s a Melinda Doolittle, who seemed set to run away with season six until ultimately placing third. ‘American Idol’ Inspirational Week: What Should The Top Seven Sing?

We have suggestions for Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze and the rest of the finalists before ‘Idol Gives Back.’ By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Photo: FOX “American Idol” opened up its stage to inspirational songs, in 2007 and 2008, as part of its “Idol Gives Back” charity show. Those theme weeks gave us performances that were either uplifting (Jason Castro’s ethereal “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”) or left us in the reality-show doldrums (Michael John’s “Dream On,” which got him the boot). After taking a year off during a recession-afflicted 2009, “Idol Gives Back” and inspirational songs are back — this time led by mentor Alicia Keys. The wide-open theme will give contestants the chance to go old-school (Frank Sinatra) or contemporary (Kelly Clarkson), youthful (Jordin Sparks) or mature (Susan Boyle), country (Rascal Flatts), soul (James Brown) or rock (Queen). In short, “Idol” hopefuls can take their song selections in any direction they choose. Here’s where we’d like to see them go. Crystal Bowersox MamaSox is season nine’s front-runner. Nothing’s changed on that front. Yet, after a string of so-so (for her) performances in recent weeks and the revelation that she considered quitting “Idol” , she’s got something to prove. How to do that? Return to the kind of song that first established her as the finalist to beat: her gospel-infused, screw-my-hospitalization take on “Long As I Can See The Light.” Bowersox should ride the gospel/soul train again with Billy Preston’s “That’s The Way God Planned It.” Crystal, don’t you go nowhere, ya hear? Lee Dewyze The 24-year-old has weaved back and forth between rocker and singer/songwriter personas all season, seemingly reluctant to embrace either one too fully. If we had to compare the overall impression of his sound to that of a successful band on the scene right now, we’d have to go with Train. And guess what? Train’s “Calling All Angels” is on this week’s approved song list. Dewyze’s voice undoubtedly struggles far more than it should, but when he’s on, we do hear something similar to Train’s frontman, Patrick Monahan. Casey James James likes to rock out, and who are we to dissuade the guy from letting his hair down and trying to go all Zeppelin on us? Only problem is that it doesn’t always work. A restrained Casey is a far more pleasing creature than a wild-child Casey. Case in point: his slow, growly rendition of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy.” So how about we split the difference? A slow, bluesy, acoustic rendition of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ “Up Where We Belong.” Siobhan Magnus Like Andrew Garcia before her, Siobhan has found herself boxed in by her past performances. And if there’s one thing we’ve come to learn about this 20-year-old, it’s that she does not like to be boxed in. We’ve got the perfect song for her to burst forth from those confines: the Pretenders’ mournful, sonorous “I’ll Stand by You.” The song just fits, and trying on a bit of a Chrissie Hynde rocker persona this week might do Magnus some good. Tim Urban Should Urban quit while he’s ahead? Because his take on Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling in Love” last week was his finest performance of the season, and we fear he has nowhere to go but down. In the weirdest way, we’ve come to appreciate our dose of Teflon Tim each week: You really never know what you’re going to get. And we won’t complain at all if we keep getting a Tim who can deliver such ear-pleasing tuneage. We encourage him to stay on the same pop-rocky track with Five for Fighting’s “World.” Michael Lynche Big Mike! You escaped with your life last week — now learn your lessons well. Ditch the guitar, indulge your R&B instincts and keep it … slooow. Because it’s the strength you showed during your take on “This Woman’s Work,” more than anything else, that has kept you in the competition. Here’s the song we keep coming back to for you: Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” It’s got the right tempo, and with a soul-infused arrangement, this could become a memorable performance for you. Aaron Kelly Sometimes we have cerebral reasons for suggesting song choices; others are based on “Idol” history. And then there are the times when a song suggestion just feels right. Thus we submit Enigma’s “Return to Innocence.” It would just be so … perfect! Is there any chance he’ll pick this tune? Nope. But as long as we’re asking questions, is there any reason to explain how he’s stuck around the “Idol” stage this long? What are your suggestions for inspirational-songs week on “Idol”? Crystal Bowersox Almost Quit American Idol, Report States

Last week, the American Idol judges saved Michael Lynche from elimination. But a new report suggets this wasn’t the first time a contestant came close to leaving the show, only for an Idol mainstay to step in at the last minute. According to TMZ, Crystal Bowersox stormed out of the studio last month, sick of all the attention from the competition and asked Ryan Seacrest in the parking lot: “What’s the point?” Crystal, who said prior to this season that she had never watched American Idol , wanted to return to her family in Ohio. How did Seacrest convince Bowersox to stay? By stating that a victory would make her a millionaire and: “The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house.
