Justin Bieber Vintage Video: Talking Ludacris, Drake On ‘Baby’ Set

Last year, Bieber denied any aspirations for a rap career. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on the set of his video for “Baby” Photo: MTV News A year ago, almost to the day, MTV News ran an interview with Justin Bieber in which the teen star said he had no plans to do any rapping. Cut to a year later, and Bieber has really stepped up his rap game, between his verse on Sean Kingston’s “Won’t Stop” and his Shawty Mane MC alter ego . When we caught up with the star on the bowling-alley video set for “Baby” last year, Bieber still seemed kind of green to the whole process but remained completely poised throughout the shoot. He opened up about his MC pals, sharing how he got Ludacris to join him on the song, which turned out to be his breakout hit. “Well, [Ludacris and I] both live in Atlanta,” Bieber said. “I met him a year prior to this, and we figured it was a perfect collaboration for him, so we invited him out to do it.” When asked if Luda offered him any advice, Bieber said, “No. I mean, he’s a rapper; he doesn’t sing.” And he seemed adamantly opposed when we asked if he had any rapping plans: “No. Not at all. Nope.” These days, Bieber’s MC rolodex has expanded even more, but back then, he was still flexing his swagga muscle by getting fellow Canadian Drake onboard to make a cameo in the video. “He’s just one of my good buddies. He’s here to hang out,” Bieber said, noting that he couldn’t confirm who else might appear on his not-yet-released My World 2.0. “You’ll have to see when it comes out in March.” On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music. Cage The Elephant Carry Alt-Rock Flag Into 2011

Thank You, Happy Birthday band is one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11 stars to watch. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Cage the Elephant’s Matthew Shultz Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Cage the Elephant toured long and hard behind their 2008 self-titled debut, wowing fans on both sides of the Atlantic with their high-intensity live shows, scoring a pair of rock-radio hits and generally learning the ropes from the likes of Silversun Pickups and Stone Temple Pilots, both of whom they toured with. In other words, they earned their success the old-fashioned way, and now they’re ready to take the next step. On Tuesday, they released their second album, Thank You, Happy Birthday — which is equally indebted to both the Pickups (who memorialize the 1990s) and the Pilots (who lived through them) — and they’re already gaining traction with the album’s first single, “Shake Me Down.” MTV News expects 2011 will be a big year for the Bowling Green, Kentucky, quintet, which is why we’ve tapped them as one of our 11 for ’11 stars to watch. Of course, months ago, there was a very real chance that none of this would’ve happened. Weary from nearly three years on the road, the band began work on Birthday, and sessions were proving difficult, to say the least. “We had written like 80 different song ideas, and I feel like we were really trying to write to a particular sound — like, what we thought Cage the Elephant should sound like — and we were pigeonholing ourselves,” frontman Matt Shultz revealed, laughing. “We all started writing songs on our own, and they were really different from what we had written before, so we were like, ‘We should use these for a side project,’ ” he continued. “And after a while, we realized most of the songs we liked were ‘side-project songs,’ [so] we made it our album.” Birthday showcases a fuzzy, rough-hewn side of Cage, which has as much to do with their decision to start fresh as it does with Shultz’s personal struggles — and his newfound love of the Pixies. “At the time, I had just broken up with my girlfriend of five years, and I’d drive around until like 3 or 4 in the morning listening to Doolittle, ” he said with a sigh. “It was my therapy, I guess.” And he carried that therapy into the songs he wrote for the album, which — like all great ’90s alt-rock tunes — delve headlong into themes like heartbreak, loss and alienation, and they do so unapologetically. “It’s not something I think you should try to hide, and especially don’t try to change your behavior,” Shultz said. “You don’t want to end up like some people, where their lives have been torn to shreds and they’re, like, smeared in the press. I’d rather people know everything that’s terrible about me than hide all the terrible things and have them come out.” So, with Birthday behind them, Cage the Elephant are pushing forward. They’ll open a few dates for the Black Keys, then begin a headlining tour of their own next month. And like all the thrift-store Titans that went before them (seriously, if you’re jonesing for an alt-rock fix, Thank You, Happy Birthday is the album for you), they’re doing it all their way, mostly by the seat of their pants. After all, they’ve sort of earned that right. “We try not to concern ourselves too much with strategic plans and all that,” Shultz said, laughing. “We’ll see what happens.” Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. AP Headline: ‘Teen Sex Not Always Bad For School Performance’

Here’s a headline destined to ruin many a parent’s Sunday: Teen Sex Not Always Bad For School Performance As if that wasn’t enough, the Associated Press actually framed this  as  good news :  There’s good news for parents who worry that their teenagers’ sex lives are affecting their school performance: A provocative new study has found that teens in committed relationships do no better or worse in school than those who don’t have sex.  After that cheery opening paragraph, things got a bit dicey, for the results of this University of California, Davis, study had little in common with the headline and lede: The same isn’t true for teens who “hook up.” Researchers found that those who have casual flings get lower grades and have more school-related problems compared with those who abstain. The findings, presented Sunday at a meeting of the American Sociological Association in Atlanta, challenge to some extent assumptions that sexually active teens tend to do poorer in school. It’s not so much whether a teen has sex that determines academic success, the researchers say, but the type of sexual relationship they’re engaged in. Teens in serious relationships may find social and emotional support in their sex partners, reducing their anxiety and stress levels in life and in school. “This should give some comfort to parents who may be concerned that their teenage son or daughter is dating,” said sociologist Peggy Giordano of Bowling Green State University, who had no role in the research. Teen sex is “not going to derail their educational trajectories,” she said. Feeling comfortable parents? Well, don’t be, because the actual results of this study were not what the AP led on: Compared with virgins, teens who have casual sex had lower GPAs, cared less about school and experienced more problems in school. For example, female teens who have flings had GPAs that were 0.16 points lower than abstinent teens. Male teens who have casual sex had GPAs that were 0.30 points lower than those who do not have sex. Teens who hook up also were at greater risk of being suspended or expelled and had lower odds of expecting to go to college. Teens who have sex – whether it’s a serious or casual relationship – were at higher risk of being truant and dropping out compared with teens who don’t have sex.  Add it all up, and it seems this study makes a strong case for teenage abstinence – but you certainly wouldn’t know that from the headline and opening paragraph, would you?

Karoline Kurkova Lawn Bowling Upskirt of the Day

Karolina Kurkova was the big Victoria’s Secret model who was on the line to get fired for a long time because she was so fucking thick…and Victoria’s Secret knows that despite a lot of fat women ordering their white trash shit, and a lot of fat men jerking off to their shit, the bitches who grace the pages of the shit, have got to have it going on…..and if you’re wondering why Karolina Kurkova is so thick, it’s probably because her fitness regime involves Lawn Bowling, a low impact sport for 90 year olds to stay active, but I have a feeling this is actually some event, and her fitness regime is really non-existant, which is pretty fucking lazy considering being fit is her fucking job and she makes millions to stay fit, but I don’t care, I’m just happy looking up her skirt….even if it’s shitty and even if I’ve seen her half naked and in panties before…cuz lawn bowling, up until today, is statistically the hardest sport to jerk off to…. Justin Bieber Rocks ‘Baby,’ Bonds With Ben Stiller On ‘Letterman’

‘Things got a little crazy with Ben Stiller,’ 16-year-old tweets after the show. By Eric Ditzian Justin Bieber performs “Baby” on “Late Night With David Letterman” Photo: MTV News Hours before Justin Bieber arrived at New York’s Lucky Strike Lanes for his bowling-themed My World 2.0 release party, the 16-year-old pop star stopped by “The Late Show With David Letterman” to bust out the album’s first single, “Baby.” After guest appearances by Ben Stiller and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, Bieber came out dressed in a black leather motorcycle jacket and black jeans. Flanked by four backup dancers, Bieber shimmied across the stage as he sang. “It was very exciting to be here with Bieber,” Stiller told Letterman earlier in the show. “I’m not being facetious. People [outside] are screaming constantly. I felt great when I got out of my car, because I didn’t know Justin was on the show.” The 44-year-old actor and comedian eventually got the chance to say hello to the teen star. “Met Justin Bieber tonight on Letterman,” Stiller wrote on his Twitter account . “Told him to hang in there, things will happen for him eventually.” Bieber gave Stiller a shout-out on his own Twitter feed, writing, “I’m on LETTERMAN 2nite… Things got a little crazy with Ben Stiller. We took the bulls by the horns.” After the performance, Letterman said to Bieber, “Hey, how ya doing, buddy? Come on up here. Nice job!” Then, it was on to the bowling party, where fans had been lined up for hours to catch a glimpse of the singer. Going up against Nick Cannon in a head-to-head bowl-off , Bieber ended up coming away the champion. But there wasn’t much time to celebrate. Just hours later, the teen was up and ready to hit the next leg of his promotional tour. “Wow. It’s early … headed to the airport,” he tweeted Wednesday morning (March 24). “Chicago bound.” Related Videos Sneak Peek: ‘The Diary Of Justin Bieber’ Related Photos Justin Bieber Takes Over The Bodies Of Other Teen Idols Behind-The-Scenes Of ‘Diary Of Justin Bieber’: Paris Justin Bieber Live On MTV.com | Photos Related Artists Justin Bieber

Nick Cannon Plans To Beat Justin Bieber In Bowling

‘Justin can’t bowl,’ the radio host says of the pop sensation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christopher “C.J” Smith Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber went bowling for his birthday , and he goofed around with Drake and Ludacris at an alley in his music video for “Baby.” Now Nick Cannon wants to throw some strikes and spares with the Canadian teen sensation when he arrives in New York City to promote his new album, My World 2.0 . “Oh yeah! Justin Bieber and I are going bowling courtesy of my morning show,” Cannon told MTV News. Cannon announced the match , which takes place on My World 2.0 ‘s release date of March 23, on Twitter. “His album comes out on March 23 and [so does the album by an] artist that I have signed, the School Gyrls. So we got a little competition, me and Bieber.” And Cannon is more than willing to tease Bieber about his ability to roll in the run-up to the match. “Justin can’t bowl. I don’t know if you’ve seen his latest video, but his form is off. So I know I’m gonna win. So me and Justin [will go] head to head at the bowling alley. We’re just bringing out as many people from New York [to] Lucky Strike for a release party. Biebermania!” Bieber may have his own mania, but Cannon is confident that he has the superior skill. “Of course I’m gonna win,” he said. “I’m athletic. Justin Bieber, he can sing and dance and all of that, but I think I got him in the blowing department.” While Cannon may be dismissive of Bieber’s bowling technique, he does have many kind words for the teen sensation’s musical abilities. “I think he’s an amazing talent, and My World 2.0 is gonna be crazy! That dude is the truth,” he said. “I’ll tell you exclusively — the album is fire.” Related Artists Justin Bieber Nick Cannon
