The Hobbit Still Kind of a Big Deal at Box Office, Bests Anchorman 2

Even Ron Burgundy is no match for Smaug … but then again he is a formidable force as a mythical dragon portrayed by master thespian Benedict Cumberbatch. The long-awaited Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was unable to steal the box-office crown from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this weekend. Anchorman 2 Movie Trailer Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Trailer Anchorman 2 has made $61.3 million in the first five days of its release, but earned a modest $26.8 million over the weekend, less than the 2004 original. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, meanwhile, made $31.5 million over the weekend, raising its overall total to $127.5 million through two weeks. Thanks to overseas business, the second installment in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy is likely to match its predecessor’s $1 billion finish. Oscar hopeful American Hustle got off to a great start with $19.1 million as it opened nationwide after a very limited run in New York and Los Angeles. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Trailer The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and filmmaker David O. Russell could very well add more Academy Awards to their collections. Speaking of J-Law, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire just passed Despicable Me 2 to become the year’s second biggest movie behind Iron Man 3 . Meanwhile, Disney’s Frozen has now beaten last year’s Wreck-It Ralph and will soon surpass Tangled thanks to its continued box-office might. The animated hit earned itself another $19.5 million during its fourth weekend in theaters, raising its total to $191.6 million as Christmas approaches.

Alex Band, The Calling Singer: Abducted, Beaten, Dumped on Train Tracks

Alex Band, the lead singer of the rock band The Calling, was abducted in Michigan this weekend, thrown into a van, beaten up and left on the train tracks. The reasons why are entirely unclear. Band (middle) was in Lapeer, Mich., for a music festival, when he decided to walk from his hotel to a nearby convenience store around 4 a.m. Sunday. While he was walking, a van pulled up alongside Alex, people inside jumped out and grabbed him right off the street, pummeling him in the van. After the beating had concluded, Band was left on nearby train tracks. Another member of The Calling noted that he was missing later that morning and assembled a search party, and he was found a short time after that. Alex Band’s condition is unclear, but he survived. Law enforcement officials did not elaborate on the details of the attack but are investigating the situation. The one-hit wonder group scored big in 2001 with the single “Wherever You Will Go,” then broke up, then recently got back together and began touring.
