Weekend Receipts: Chronicle, Woman in Black Make For Potent 1-2 Punch

Two supernatural thrillers joined a pair of spooky holdovers in the top five of this weekend’s box office, where one of the world’s biggest stars was no match for the low-budget telepathic shenanigans of Team Chronicle . And, er, what happened to Drew Barrymore? Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. Chronicle Gross: $22,000,000 (new) Screens: 2,907 (PSA $7,568) Weeks: 1 The found-footage phenomenon continues! It’s only a matter of time before Martin Scorsese is inspired to legitimize the genre with the story of a boy who lives in a train station and unearths the secret identity of an old toy-seller with the help of obscure archival film thought lost to the ages. Oh, wait. 2. The Woman in Black Gross: $21,000,000 (new) Screens: 2,855 (PSA $7,356) Weeks: 1 “What did they see?” indeed. Daniel Radcliffe’s strong post- Harry Potter debut indicated as much about his smart choices as they did about his loyal fan base. I still don’t understand how that Allen Ginsberg role is going to work, but at least he’s on the board as bankable beyond the Hogwarts bubble. 3. The Grey Gross: $9,500,000 ($34,756,000) Screens: 3,208 (PSA $2,961) Weeks: 2 (Change: -51.7%) Yikes. For all the credit I gave Neeson last week, it’s worth noting that The Grey sustained an unusually high week-two drop — nearly three times higher than Taken in 2009, and well above even last year’s Unknown . What gives, America? That’s just mean. 4. Big Miracle Gross: $8,500,000 (new) Screens: 2,129 (PSA $3,992) Weeks: 1 Cue the “Who’s going to free Drew Barrymore’s career from the thickening, encroaching arctic ice ?” lines in 3…2… OK, forget it. 5. Underworld: Awakening Gross: $5,600,000 ($54,353,000) Screens: 2,636 (PSA $2,124) Weeks: 3 (Change: -54.7%) More like Underworld: Sleepening ! Seriously, folks, I’ve got nothing. How Is “Red Tails” Doing At The Box Office?

Go here to read the rest:

Hollywood doesn’t believe that Black America will support a movie like Red Tails , and many African-Americans are making it a point to make to see the film this weekend to help boost the box office numbers. But how is Red Tails doing? So far, the movie is exceeding expectations. However, studio execs don’t expect the support to last. Red Tails is currently on track to make$15-$18 million this weekend, and $6-8 million today (January 20th). This would make Red Tails the No. 2 film in theaters, behind  Underworld Awakening starring Kate Beckinsale and Michael Ely, which should bring in $24-$27 million. Friday Box Office: Puss Swashbuckles to First; Paranormal Plunges

Barring a Texas Rangers-esque collapse today and tomorrow, America’s favorite spun-off Spanish feline with a sword will scamper away with the weekend’s box-office crown: Puss in Boots easily knocked off Paranormal Activity 3 , which slid some 70 percent off last Friday’s blistering pace. In other news, Justin Timberlake and Johnny Depp opened soft and Anonymous had a Bard time (sorry) on around 250 screens. Your Friday Box Office is here.

Don’t Look Now, But Johnny English Reborn Might Be Your Fall Movie Phenom

I’m nothing if not fair, so: Congratulations to Universal, which 17 months ago displayed what looked at first like a desperate lack of imagination but has since been proven to be a bit of box-office alchemy. Indeed, its comedy Johnny English Reborn — the sequel to Rowan Atkinson’s hit 2003 spy spoof Johnny English — debuted overseas last weekend to the biggest opening of Atkinson’s career. It’s a hit! In Russia!

After Mr. Skin Exposes CGI Fake Olivia Wilde Nudity, Change-Up Bombs at Box Office

We knew we weren’t the only ones shocked and appalled by The Change-Up ! It seems the idea of computer generated nipples is offensive to more than just Skin Central, because this weekend the body-switch comedy placed a distant fourth at the box office. The Change-Up finished behind not only Rise of the Planet of the Apes , but also The Smurfs and Cowboys and Aliens , both of which were in their second week. Ouch! After our positive nudity report turned out to be the result of CGI trickery, Skin Central certainly wasn’t shelling out to see this flick, and we’re willing to bet the unfolding CGI scandal we reported here at Mr. Skin kept other guys away too. Well, the tired concept and terrible reviews may have had something to do with it, but we’re pretty sure it was us. Let this be a lesson to movie producers who want to get guys into theaters with A-list nudity but not shell out the cash for the real thing…That’s OUR fountain you’re peeing in, gentlemen, and we’re not gonna let you get away with it. Mr. Skin- protecting dudes from fake nudes since 1999! For a good look at The Change-Up star Olivia Wilde ‘s REAL nipples, check her out right here at MrSkin.com!

Neil Patrick Harris on The Smurfs, Fatherhood, and the Potential for Socialist Smurf Sequels

Actor, singer, magician, talented master of ceremonies, web star… Neil Patrick Harris can pretty much do it all — but can he make the leap into mainstream movie stardom? He’ll find out this month in Sony’s live action-CG adaptation The Smurfs , which sees the famous blue creatures take Manhattan — and the lives of Patrick (Harris) and Grace Winslow (Jayma Mays) — by storm in a modern day-set adventure about appreciating family and stepping into fatherhood.

Comic-Con Cosplayer Profile: Meet the Halo Spartans

As part of our continuing Comic-Con coverage this year, Movieline is profiling some of the most elaborate cosplayers roaming the San Diego Convention Center halls. Yesterday’s subject was a Homeland Security employee dressed as Chef Vader , and this morning’s profilees are two dramatically costumed Halo Spartans, who Movieline found asking for directions at a Mrs. Fields stand outside of Ballroom 20.
