Linkin Park’s ‘The Catalyst’ Video All About Contradiction

The clip conveys ‘something can be beautiful or it can be destructive,’ Mike Shinoda tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Mike Shinoda on the set of “The Catalyst” Photo: MTV News Linkin Park’s much-discussed A Thousand Suns will finally see the, uh, light of day on September 14, bringing to close a nearly two-year process that saw the band push themselves in ways they never thought possible. And, as is the case with most grand projects, things were still being worked out up until the very last minute. Case in point: The video for the album’s first single, “The Catalyst,” which the band shot back in June. In keeping with tradition, the clip was directed by the band’s DJ, Joseph Hahn, but aside from who would be sitting in the director’s chair, there were still plenty of details to sort out including just what they were going to call the song itself. “We are deciding the title as we speak,” LP’s Mike Shinoda told MTV News on the set of the video back in June. “We came in with a title in mind, and changed our minds, and probably by the end of the day, we’ll have a new name for the song.” And while they were still unsure of the song’s title a few months ago, the boys knew exactly the kind of emotions they wanted to convey in its video. Much like the album itself, they were gunning for big, often-contradictory themes: power and grace, destruction and salvation, ugliness and beauty. “The concept to the video: It kind of comes from the idea of, like, if you could imagine when nuclear fission was invented, or a moment in time when something can be used for positive or negative,” Shinoda said. “Something can be beautiful or it can be destructive. Or even, you know, if you’ve ever seen a dangerous fire from far away, it’s devastating up close, but from far away, it can be beautiful. Those are the kind of themes that run throughout the album, and they’re also themes that you see in the video.” “The Catalyst” video premieres at midnight August 25 (technically, the 26th) on MTV.com and VH1.com, and then on MTV, VH1, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV Tr3s and all MTV international territories at 8 p.m. ET/PT on August 26. ‘Nanny McPhee Returns’: The Reviews Are In!

Emma Thompson’s sequel charms many critics, but it’s way too saccharine for others. By Eric Ditzian Emma Thompson in “Nanny McPhee Returns” Photo: Universal Pictures This weekend is set to be a crowded one at the cinema, as five new flicks receive the wide-release treatment. None of them — from “Piranha 3D” to “Vampires Suck” — are likely to come out on top at the box office, as “The Expendables” looks to commandeer the top spot for a second straight week. Of all the fresh faces, though, Emma Thompson might well perform the best, as “Nanny McPhee Returns,” which the 51-year-old Brit both wrote and stars in, arrives on U.S. shores over four years after the original film. The latest installment has already grossed $62.6 million overseas. How will it fair domestically? Reviews are largely positive, though it remains to be seen if “Nanny McPhee” can overtake the “Twilight” parody, “Vampires Suck,” or the Bow Wow-starring, “Lottery Ticket.” Here’s what the critics have to say. The Story “Nanny McPhee is dispatched to help a family in desperate need of order. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) lives with her three children on a rundown family farm in the countryside. Her husband, Rory, is fighting overseas, and poor Isabel must cope with a shiftless brother-in-law (Rhys Ifans) determined to make her sell the farm, a part-time job with a comically absent-minded shopkeeper (Maggie Smith) and the arrival of two more children: posh cousins Cyril (Eros Vlahos) and Celia (Rosie Taylor-Ritson), sent from London for safety but creating havoc as soon as they arrive.” — Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times The Performances “Vlahos and Asa Butterfield, as Isabel’s eldest boy, have the movie’s most effective scene, in which they confront Ralph Fiennes, playing Vlahos’ stiff military dad, during the boys’ quick trip to London to learn the fate of Butterfield’s father. … Other roles call for too much mugging. This would include Maggie Smith’s turn as a forgetful old shopkeeper and Sam Kelly as an aging air-raid warden. The film suffers slightly from a curious sort of ageism, where the older you get the more ‘comic’ you become. In the title role, Thompson wisely lets her makeup artist do much of the initial work — the moles and hair do start to disappear as the children learn her lessons, leaving her more or less recognizable by movie’s end. Meanwhile, she uses her commanding voice to bring the movie’s energy to her character while standing aside to give the child protagonists plenty of room to romp.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter The Jokes “The movie’s one other concession to modernity, besides the computer graphics, is the relentless poo-poo and flatulence jokes that have been inserted, ostensibly to make 11-year-olds scream with delight. Maggie Smith — that is, Dame Maggie Smith — playing a demented shopkeeper, plops down on a wet cow patty and announces that her seat is quite comfy. At another point, the movie leaves you with the impression that Nanny has apologized for flatulence. In retrospect, it’s actually remarkable that Julie Andrews got through all 139 minutes of ‘Mary Poppins’ without ever passing wind.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco The Dissenters “In the disappointing sequel from Thompson and director Susanna White (the BBC’s ‘Bleak House’), we get a gentler, more wink-inclined Nanny McPhee, not to mention kids whose rambunctiousness seems manufactured rather than entertainingly exaggerated. … The movie needn’t be so busy, or so sweet. … [The] plot demands and a general push for saccharinity have [McPhee] taking to the air on the bike, and being saluted by the Queen’s Guard, and cheerily rocketing down a country byway. So much for skipping the spoonful of sugar.” — Tom Russo, Boston Globe The Final Word “This sequel to 2006’s ‘Nanny McPhee’ is almost as charming as the first. There are problems, though, in its tone, segueing awkwardly from escapism to gritty reality. Some of that is mitigated by the endearing performances and the way the story imbues its young characters with intelligence, motivation and depth, qualities often lacking for children in family films.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Katy Perry Says She Wrote ‘California Gurls’ Out Of Jealousy

‘I thought it would be perfect timing for a California anthem,’ she says of her response to ‘Empire State of Mind.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol “California Gurls” came out of a very simple place: as a response to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ massive hit “Empire State of Mind.” While “Empire” was incredibly New York, with a sweeping chorus and plenty of Big Apple references, Perry’s ode to her home state was glossy and shiny and featured Cali MC Snoop Dogg. Perry said the song is just what California needed. “[California girls] are different,” she said about Teenage Dream ‘s debut single. “That’s why there needed to be a song about them. I felt like there’s something in the water. Like, you know the boys always dream about maybe dating a California girl, just because we’ve got the sun shining through 365 days a year.”

Fabolous Says He’s ‘Good’ After Having Tour Van Stolen

‘It was stripped down like a Magic City dancer,’ Fab tells MTV News of recovering the car in Washington, D.C. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: MTV News Some fun-loving criminals made traveling arrangements for some of Fabolous’ entourage a little more difficult this past weekend in Washington, D.C. The Brooklyn MC had a show in the area, and after his performance he discovered his crew’s transportation had been tampered with. “That was one of the few things on the Internet that was true,” Fab confirmed to MTV News on Thursday in the Bronx. “I had shows in D.C. this weekend. One of the turtle-top vans wound up getting stolen,” he continued. “I don’t know how, even the police were mind-boggled by it because it was parked right next to the Secret Service building. They found it though. It was stripped down like a Magic City dancer. It happens. I didn’t know people really go hard and steal cars like that. I think I tweeted , like, ‘Yo, do people really still steal cars?’ I thought that was something that kinda like fell off. What are you gonna do with a car after you steal it? Joyride? But I guess you can get some parts. But a turtle-top? You’re taking a big-ass van. Hopefully, it helped somebody out in their time of need. “I was good,” Fab laughed, correcting the record about his personal mode of transportation. “Let’s not get that mistaken. I had another ride. But my boys, they were in a little jam. We figured it out, made a police report. I thought it got towed at first. But we figured it out, made a police report, came back to New York. I don’t fault D.C. for it. Your van can get stolen anywhere I guess. I always have fun in D.C. [though]. D.C. shows me a lot of love.” Fabolous’ next project is The Grieving Music, an EP inspired by his DJ Drama-hosted mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service. The EP is due September 6. Entourage to End Next Summer

At Saturday’s TCA panel for HBO, programming president Michael Lombardo announced that Entourage will end next summer with a shortened, six-episode order. But don’t expect all those answers you’ve been waiting patiently for over the past seven seasons. Said Lombardo: “[Creator Doug Ellin] is appropriately reserving — he wants to write a film, but wants to do it when the story will make sense.” Just don’t have Vince and the boys head to Abu Dhabi and things should be fine. ‘Jersey Shore’ Fans In Miami Weigh In On Change Of Scenery

‘They bring a little life to Miami,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV After bar-brawling, club-hopping and GTL-ing their way to pop-culture stardom, the “Jersey Shore” kids had to take things to the next level in season two. So the crew upped the ante by taking the drama to another shore. In the second season of the MTV reality hit, which kicked off last week, the gang fist-pumps its way through Miami, and for the most part, South Beach fans have been enjoying the party. “I love ‘Jersey Shore.’ It’s … crazy,” Francisco Santander told MTV News. Denise Mata concurred: “[There is] always drama there, and it’s fun to watch [the] fights and them getting drunk, and it’s just funny to me.” The “Shore” crew has partied its way into fans’ hearts but has also weathered criticism that the super-tanned, party-startin’ housemates — who proudly champion the term “guidos” — reinforce Italian stereotypes. David Gliottone enjoys the craziness but has issues with their image. “I like the fact that they’re Italian,” Gliottone said. ” I don’t like the way that they act sometimes, [because] I think it kind of brings a negative vibe to the Italian community.” Nora Weinberg said she thinks the “Shore” stars should keep the drama up north, but added that it’s cool they’re branching out beyond the boardwalk. “I think they should be in Jersey, but I think it’s fun that they can go to Miami,” she said. George Ott said the crew’s antics have reached beyond the shores of both Jersey and Miami to score fans Down Under. “[I’m a] huge fan of the show in New Zealand,” Ott said. “[I] love the boys [and] JWoww.” As entertaining as fans find the cast’s beachside escapades, one viewer said the “Jersey Shore” crew may have brought too much heat to Miami. “I think the ‘Jersey Shore’ cast is really crazy and outgoing and they bring a little life to Miami,” Cassandra said. “But they need to stick to Jersey because they’re not supposed to be here doing that stuff. You don’t see that here in Miami.” What do you think about the “Jersey Shore” cast being in Miami? Let us know in the comments below! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
