Dapper Dan & Gucci Announce Global Diversity Program

The brand has announced its formal action plan to bring true inclusion to its $15 billion dollar business. As spotted on Hypebeast the Italian luxury brand is owning up to their mistake from February. After admitting that their “blackface” inspired turtleneck was racially offensive they have announced what they propose to put in place so that their designs are more thoughtful in the future. Dapper Dan took to his Instagram to reveal the action plan. The high-end fashion conglomerate introduced the Gucci Changemakers initiative which is a “global program that supports industry change and fosters unity through community action”. The program includes a $5 million fund that will support social change via community based programs throughout North America. Additionally a $1.5 million scholarship that intends to aid several students seeking an a formal education in fashion with $20,000 grants towards their tuition. Employees will also be tasked to get involved as well with giving back to the community. CEO and President Marco Bizzarri explained the vision in a formal statement. “I believe in dialogue, building bridges and taking quick action. This is why we started working immediately on the long-term infrastructure at Gucci to address our shortcomings. Through our scholarship fund we will also create more opportunities for talented young people of diverse backgrounds to gain access to careers in the fashion industry”. Harlem legend Dapper Dan, who is partnered with Gucci, also detailed the roll out. “I am proud to work with Gucci and other community leaders to help guide programs that will create meaningful impact for the Black community and fashion as a whole”. So we sat down with celebrity hairstylist Nikki Regis, of the Thomas Taft Salon in NYC, to talk about the hot new looks for natural hair. Regis – who specializes in protective styles, cuts, coloring and transitioning back to natural – said the new crop of hairstyles for natural hair was all about textured looks to let your style stand out. Low cuts are becoming the latest trend into naturals, Regis said, adding that bright colors like neon, reds, and blues were the new dye jobs her clients were now requesting. “Whether you choose not to do a color, the main focus is on fun styles that are short, tapered and edgy,” Regis said. Jay-Z’s ‘Blueprint’ Among Recordings Library of Congress is Preserving

Some of its “audio treasures” include Jay-Z ‘s ‘Blueprint’ and ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire. Each year, the Librarian of Congress selects 25 recordings for the registry that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and are at least 10 years old. It now includes 525 titles from the library’s collection of almost 3 million pieces of recorded sound. 31 Days, 31 Inspiring Women: Ava Duvernay

Entry number 14 on our list is one of the women in Hollywood showcasing our stories, whether it be in the form of documentaries, feature films and more. Always looking to shine a light on the marginalized among us, this particular woman was the first black female director nominated for the Academy Award of Best Documentary Feature in 2017 and has made strides not only amplifying the voices of female directors but black men and children as well. She is Ava DuVernay, the visionary and one of our 31 inspiring women.  Ava DuVernay ‘s story is one that there is no exact age you have to reach in order to find your passion or make it. Years after graduating from UCLA, the Compton born DuVernay tried her hand at filmmaking in 2007. Crafting a 12-minute short titled  Saturday Night Life , it was in dedication to her mother as she spotlighted a single mother with three children taking her children to the grocery store. Who knew that some seven years later, her first major feature film would be nominated for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards? DuVernay became the first Black woman to helm a film with a budget of $100 million with 2018’s  A Wrinkle In Time , a year after she was nominated for Best Documentary Film when she created  13th , a film centered around how the 13th amendment may not have fully led to the abolishment of slavery but rather established the prison industrial complex and focused it mainly on black and brown bodies. It’s not just the big screen when it comes to DuVernay making changes across the board. When she was announced as the show runner for OWN’s  Queen Sugar , she decided to have all women direct each and every episode of the show. Much like everything she’s touched, it’s been critically acclaimed and then some. Not bad for a woman who didn’t pick up a camera to film and shape the world in her eyes until she was 33. FUN FACT:  For all of her work, DuVernay is the first for a number of awards. She’s the first Black woman to win the award for Best Director at Sundance, the first black director to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes and the first Black woman to have her film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
