Source: Michael Kovac / Getty Jay-Z and his steady pivot between an elite-level recording artist to one of the savviest businessmen of his era have been well documented over the past decade and more. In a new piece from Forbes , the veteran Brooklyn wordsmith is in a company of his own after becoming the first rapper to join the billionaires club. Forbes writes: Less than a decade later, it’s clear that Jay-Z has accumulated a fortune that conservatively totals $1 billion, making him one of only a handful of entertainers to become a billionaire—and the first hip-hop artist to do so. Jay-Z’s steadily growing kingdom is expansive, encompassing liquor, art, real estate (homes in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, Tribeca) and stakes in companies like Uber. His journey is all the more impressive given its start: Brooklyn’s notorious Marcy housing projects. He was a drug dealer before becoming a musician, starting his own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, to release his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. Since then he’s amassed 14 No. 1 albums, 22 Grammy awards and over $500 million in pretax earnings in a decade. Crucially, he realized that he should build his own brands rather than promote someone else’s: the clothing line Rocawear, started in 1999 (sold for $204 million to Iconix in 2007); D’Ussé, a cognac he co-owns with Bacardi; and Tidal, a music-streaming service. She admitted in February of taking in $18,000 in flood relief benefits by falsely registering for FEMA benefits after the June 2016 floods that killed more than 20 West Virginians and caused more than $100 million worth of damage. Taylor lied and said that her primary residence had been damaged in the flood and that she was forced to rent a place to stay. “There’s no such thing as a little bit of FEMA fraud. Taylor’s fraudulent scheme took FEMA dollars away from those who needed it the most,” U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart said in a statement, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More than two years ago, Taylor came into public view when she resigned from her county government development job for calling Mrs. Obama “an ape in heels” on Facebook . She was suspended for her comments, then fired and secretly rehired and then fired for good . “It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels,” Taylor wrote in November 2016. In her plea agreement, Taylor also agreed to pay restitution of over $18,000. E ducator and historian Lonnie G. Bunch III has dedicated his career to the preservation of important facets of American history. After leading the creation and development of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Newark native will now serve as the Smithsonian Institution’s 14th secretary; making him the first Black person to be appointed to the position, NPR reported. Smithsonian names Lonnie Bunch III as new secretary, the first African American to lead the institution https://t.co/9e9BhKCGCW — The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) May 28, 2019 Bunch was selected by the Board of Regents to take on the role. He succeeds David Skorton who has served as the institution’s secretary since 2015. In his new position, Bunch will be responsible for steering the direction and driving growth for the Smithsonian as well as overseeing the daily operations of all of its libraries, museums, and the National Zoo. He began his journey with the Smithsonian nearly 30 years ago and has held several executive level positions at the National Museum of American History. When he became the director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture there was only one person on staff and no funding. Through his leadership the museum—which has over 40,000 artifacts that capture the essence of the Black experience—has attracted upwards of 4 million visitors. Bunch has also spearheaded capital campaigns for the Chicago Historical Society where he served as president from 2001 through 2005. One of his goals as secretary of the 173-year-old institution is to keep history relevant in a digital age. He wants the artifacts and information housed in the Smithsonian institutions to foster creativity and innovation. “It is important for the public to view the Smithsonian not simply as an addict of nostalgia, but as a cauldron of ideas of innovation and understanding that can be transformative for our country,” he said in a statement. “It must be an institution that is ripe with technology, an institution better suited to serve 21st century audiences, and an institution of research, of great collections, and of wonder that helps America understand itself and its world.” Bunch is slated to officially start his new position on June 16. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Witnesses Corroborate Jussie Smollett’s Characterization Of Persons Of Interest In Alleged Race Hate Incident The recent release of several hundred pages of internal documents related to the alleged racist attack against actor Jussie Smollett’s has raised questions about law enforcement’s narrative of the case after some witness statements appear to match the “Empire” actor’s story. Chicago Police released more than 400 pages of documents earlier this week that detail it’s handling of Smollett’s case , and at least two eyewitnesses told police that they saw men who fit Smollett’s descriptions of the suspects loitering near the scene around the time of the alleged incident, according to the documents, which were obtained by BOSSIP. A hotel security guard told police that he saw three men in dark clothing – and one of the men was white and wearing a facemask – near the scene around the time of the incident, the case’s papers state. And another resident who was walking a dog told police that she saw a white man smoking a cigarette with a rope poking out from underneath his coat. The witness said the man appeared to be waiting for something, and his clothes appeared wet. Source: Brandon Caldwell / Radio One Houston Cops accused Smollett of staging the alleged attack to help advance his career and later charged Smollett with making a false police report. The District Attorney’s Office eventually dropped the charges. Smollett and his legal team weren’t aware of the details in the documents because the District Attorney’s Office and his lawyers did not exchange evidence before Smollett’s charges were ultimately dropped, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told BOSSIP. Nevertheless, our source said Smollett’s story hasn’t wavered, and while his camp isn’t worried about his career, there is a concern that his community and advocacy work has been overshadowed by the case. “It got political and it got bigger than him,” the source said. “It’s the years of advocacy, the things he’s been doing for his community and people of color that goes away and it’s not fair.”
