‘Breaking Dawn’ Reveals Make Best ‘Twilight’ Year Yet

‘Twilight Tuesday’ rounds up video of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner talking the wedding, honeymoon and being shirtless. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment We knew 2011 was going to be a big year in the world of “Twilight” news. The fanbase seemed to keep growing by the hour, as did the excitement surrounding the release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1.” The release of a new “Twilight” film also meant that we’d be seeing a lot of the blockbuster franchise’s superstars as they promoted the film — and, boy, was MTV News lucky with how much time we ended up spending with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the rest of the gang this year. As such, this week’s “Twilight Tuesday” is dedicated to the best and brightest of those interviews with our favorite stars. Our first encounter with a “Twilight” star was our chat with Pattinson at the Golden Globes, during which he provided us with a giggly reaction to the first “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” still of Bella and Edward in bed , as well as his positive reviews of Stewart playing a vampire . “It’s like she wanted to do it the entire time,” he told us. “It’s really funny, it’s like a completely different environment on set when she’s a vampire and when she’s not. I think she’s going to do it really well.” There were also plenty of teases about the film’s most highly anticipated scenes, including the wedding of Edward and Bella and the honeymoon sex scene. Of seeing Stewart in a wedding dress during the filming of their characters’ nuptials, Pattinson said, “She looked amazing. I really didn’t do much than just stand there.” Stewart later said of the experience: “It was very, very emotional for me.” Pattinson added, “You kind of realize what the groom’s position in a wedding is, which, in reality, is basically a prop. You stand there in a suit, and then everyone is looking at the girl.” One scene in which everyone was most certainly not just looking at the girl is the first sex scene between Edward and Bella on their wedding night. “I think we had some really interesting ideas about [the love scene],” Pattinson said when we caught up with him at the “Water for Elephants” press junket . “It’s kind of interesting, as well, having to do it in the context of PG-13. It makes it more interesting.” Speaking to all the hype about the big moment, Pattinson said that although there was a lot of pressure to deliver some major fireworks in the scene, he was confident he’d give a convincing performance. “That’s the one time I have felt like the coolest person,” Pattinson admitted with a laugh. “I was like, ‘This is easy!’ I can fulfill people’s sexual fantasy expectations without even thinking, piece of cake. That isn’t acting,” he joked. “The only thing [that was difficult] is the vanity aspect,” Pattinson continued. “Taylor [Lautner] just ruined the whole series for me. As soon as he buffed up, I’m like, ‘Well, I’m throwing in the towel’ on ‘New Moon.’ ” Speaking of Lautner and his chiseled abs, the heartthrob told us that he had to actively campaign to director Bill Condon and the powers that be to limit his amount of shirtlessness in the film, much to the disappointment of his devoted fan following. “I got it down to one time, one time in the movie, and it literally lasts for two seconds,” Lautner said proudly of his single shirtless shot. “There was some negotiating for sure. There was more [shirtless scenes] when I read the original script, trust me,” he said. “And I got it down to a very, very small amount, which I was so happy with.” Other interview highlights included the unexpected, off-the-cuff, informal moments wherein our favorite stars played ball with a few of our more-outlandish requests and questions. Case in point: When we asked Jackson Rathbone to help read off a few of the 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees in song, which he did in good spirits and with aplomb. Then there was the “Breaking Dawn” version of the always-entertaining “Yes/No Show” with Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner. And those are just a small collection of our favorites from 2011 alone. Only time will tell what 2012 will bring as we gear up for the “epic” conclusion to the franchise, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” It goes without saying that we can’t wait. ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ Is Our #2 Newsmaker Of 2011

Penultimate ‘Twilight’ film was about more than just Bella and Edward’s first time. By Amy Wilkinson Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit One doesn’t need Alice Cullen’s powers of prognostication to foretell fang-tastic returns for “The Twilight Saga.” Four years in, and the success of the franchise is a foregone conclusion. To wit, the penultimate film in the series, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” has grossed more than $600 million worldwide since its November release and even set a new record by becoming the first installment to top the box office three weekends in a row . And it also landed at #2 on MTV News’ Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, falling short only to Lady Gaga. It’d be tempting to chalk up this particular installment’s massive appeal to one little (though very loaded) word: sex. As any avowed Twilighter will tell you, “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” marks the first time Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) do it, a titillating plot point that Summit Entertainment’s marketing department took full advantage of. In fact, the very first promotional image for the flick, released in late 2010, was a close-cropped photo of Bella clutching a fistful of rogue feathers that had escaped a pillow during the couple’s first romp. Then there was that much-talked-about publicity still released in January, showing a moodily lit Bella and Edward in flagrante. And, of course, the topic was a hot talking point during the film’s many promotional stops. “It’s not just human sex. It’s … obviously blown a little bit out of proportion, slightly. It’s kind of like the most important scene in the movie. It’s so weird,” Stewart told MTV News during “MTV First: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For co-star Pattinson, the discussion reached near-absurd levels. “It is kind of disgusting,” he said with a laugh during the

‘Twilight’ Tops Box Office For Third Consecutive Weekend

‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1,’ which has ruled the box office since its premiere, is followed by kid flicks ‘The Muppets’ and ‘Hugo.’ By Ryan J. Downey Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Four movies in, the “Twilight” franchise continues to achieve new “firsts.” Over the weekend, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” became the first entry in the romantic vampires-and-werewolves series to maintain the top spot at the box office three weekends in a row. “Breaking Dawn” collected another $16.9 million, easily besting the $11.2 million claimed by expected champion “The Muppets” during a soft post-Thanksgiving weekend. The latest numbers are the highest third-weekend gross of any “Twilight” film. However, the $247.3 million gross of “Breaking Dawn Part 1” is still behind where “New Moon” had landed after the same amount of time in theaters. Unlike the critically reviled “Breaking Dawn,” film reviewers have been overwhelmingly positive about “The Muppets.” But the family-friendly film still declined 62 percent in its second weekend of release toward a total haul of $56.1 million. The franchise reboot of sorts will likely outgross “The Muppet Movie,” but it has a less than slim chance of ever beating the 1979 film’s attendance numbers. Two more well-reviewed kid flicks made the box-office top five. Martin Scorsese’s 3-D period piece “Hugo” was #3 with $7.6 million as it expanded from 1,277 theaters to 1,840. The filmmaker’s first family film has made an estimated $25.2 million thus far. The animated “Arthur Christmas” was #4 with $7.4 million, which reflects a second-weekend drop of only 39 percent. That’s the best post-Thanksgiving decline of any film since “Just Friends” in 2005. “Arthur” has made $25.3 million overall. “Happy Feet Two” wasn’t able to do anything to shake off its reputation as one of the year’s biggest flops as it landed at #5 with $6 million. The animated sequel’s $51.7 million gross is just 43 percent of what its predecessor made in the same period. And critics haven’t been kind. “It’s hard to resist dancing penguins, but ‘Happy Feet Two’ may make you want to try,” the Los Angeles Times wrote. In stark contrast to the teen-friendly “Twilight” sequel and the four family movies that comprise the top five, director Steve McQueen’s sex addiction drama “Shame” enjoyed the third-highest debut ever for a limited NC-17-rated release (behind “Bad Education” and “Lust, Caution”). Playing at just 10 locations, “Shame” had the weekend’s best per-screen averages on its way to collecting $361,000. Next weekend’s new releases will include director Garry Marshall’s celebrity-filled follow-up to “Valentine’s Day,” “New Year’s Eve”; a pair of R-rated comedies — Jonah Hill’s “The Sitter” and Charlize Theron’s “Young Adult”; and the well-reviewed Cold War espionage drama “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” which stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, the fictitious hero of British author John le Carr

Weekend Receipts: Twilight Takes Top Slot for Third Week in a Row

Breaking Dawn sparkled to the top slot yet again on the quietest weekend of the season, but just take a gander at the healthy size of Shame ‘s art house opening! Meanwhile, the latest offerings from Martin Scorsese and Alexander Payne enjoyed a boost. But I’ve got to ask: What happened to the Muppets’ mojo?

Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj: Such (Barbie) Dolls!

Barbie dolls are changing with the times. Often criticized for promoting the ideal woman as blonde, unhealthily proportioned and materialistic, two special edition dolls will now personify … party-loving celebrities with weird hairstyles and rampant sex appeal, who are also really rich and famous! Yes, Mattel is planning to launch dolls for Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry. The dolls are said to include striking similarities to the real pop princesses like the famous tattoo on Nicki Minaj’s left arm, not to mention her trademark pink hair. It does make sense in that Minaj has garnered a following of fans who refer to themselves as “Barbies” in honor of her fondness for crazy wigs and the color pink. Both Minaj and Perry are known for breaking the mold when it comes to fashion, and while Barbie would probably not be caught dead in their getups, we’ll allow it.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Passes $500 Million Mark Worldwide

Movie hits half-billion mark in less than two weeks. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Summit “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1”
looks to dominate the box office for a good long time. After two weeks atop
the list of top-grossing movies, the penultimate film in the vampires and werewolves epic has already raked in more than $508 million worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the movie is the ninth film this year to push past the half-billion mark globally, hitting the mark in just 12 days of release. So far, the movie has grossed $223.4 million in North America and $285 million internationally, for a grand total of $508.4 million. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years,” said Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement. “Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella.” MTV News asked experts how long this domination can go on, especially since the only competition this weekend is the NC-17-rated full-frontal indie flick “Shame.” “It’ll be close between [‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’] and ‘The Muppets,’ because [‘The Muppets’] has much better word of mouth,” said Boxoffice.com’s Phil Contrino, noting that it was too soon to say which would come out on top. He also predicted that the movie should finish its domestic run in the $300 million range and stay near the top until such holiday blockbusters as “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol” on December 21. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on November 16, 2012. Consider Uggie: The Awards Case for The Artist’s Wonder Dog

It’s awards madness this week at Movieline, with the New York Film Critics Circle and Gotham Awards having weighed in on their best of 2011, the Independent Spirit Awards revealing their nominees, and the National Board of Review winners forthcoming on Thursday. But amid all the institutionalized laurels and accolades, one subject remains notably absent — a subject so beloved within his own celebrated film that the omission remains a cruel snub at best and a skulduggerous interspecial sham at worst.

Shame Redband Trailer: Inside Fassbender’s Fassboner

To call the newly unveiled, NSFW redband trailer for Shame hot is an understatement, since it quickens the pulse in a delicious way that leads to much more than just sheer titillation. Watch as poor sex-addicted Michael Fassbender is wracked with torment as he rides the NYC subway, silently eye-fucking a gorgeous stranger on the train. However often they say men think about sex in a given day, this guy does multiplied by a thousand… and it’s wearing on his weary, helpless soul.
