Media That Accused Fox of Shilling for Bush Yawn at Zuckerman’s Ties to Obama

Days after Mort Zuckerman, the Editor-in-Chief of U.S. News and World Report,  claimed to be close to President Obama’s advisors, the national media have yet to express any interest. Of the few outlets that mentioned it, the White House’s denial was taken as gospel truth, and no more investigation was apparently warranted. What a difference when the sitting president is a Democrat. Under the Bush Administration, the media were obsessed with linking the White House to Fox News in an effort to accuse Republicans of spreading propaganda. Yet now that U.S. News is linked to Obama, suddenly such allegations are quickly dimissed. For a taste of the double standard, observe two different reports from Politico. First is a post on Tuesday concerning Zuckerman: Real Estate and media mogul Mort Zuckerman raised eyebrows all over yesterday with the claim on Fox that he “helped write one of [Obama’s] speeches,” and his subsequent refusal to go into it right now. Among those with reason to be puzzled, a White House source tells me, were Obama’s speechwriters, Jon Favreau and Ben Rhodes. Neither “has ever met or spoken to Mort Zuckerman” and the two have “been closely involved in every speech the President has given since 2005,” said the official. Zuckerman has met President Obama a few times and no doubt encountered other Administration officials, and he could well have suggested a theme to the president or another aide. But the question of what he “helped write”  remains a bit of a mystery. Those three small paragraphs comprise Ben Smith’s entire report. President Obama is denying the story, so that’s just that. Was that kind of trust extended to Republicans under President Bush? Not so much. Here’s Politico giving space to one Matt Stoller in 2007: First, we argued that Fox News is not a news channel, but a propaganda outlet that regularly distorts, spins, and falsifies information. Second, Fox News is heavily influenced or even controlled by the Republican Party itself. As such, we believe that Fox News on the whole functions as a surrogate operation for the GOP. Treating Fox as a legitimate news channel extends the Republican Party’s ability to swift-boat and discredit our candidates. In other words, Fox News is a direct pipeline of misinformation from the GOP leadership into the traditional press. So, we have a self-proclaimed fan of Obama working as Editor-in-Chief of a major newspaper, but Politico isn’t much worried about bias seeping onto his pages. But when Fox News is perceived as being in the tank for Republicans, it’s apparently okay to launch accusations against them. In 2002, the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward revealed that Fox News head Roger Ailes had written a letter to President Bush immediately after the attacks on September 11. Woodward portrayed it as improper contact between the White House and the press, but Ailes insisted it was nothing more than an emotional letter from a scared citizen following a terrorist attack. The media jumped all over the controversy with fervor. On November 21 of that year, PBS News Hour filed a report on the scandal, with host Terrence Smith asking bluntly “is that an appropriate role for a journalist,” which set up a nice tee for Woodward to reply “he’s not supposed to do it.” News Hour then provided input from Tucker Carlson: Roger Ailes is the editorial chief of fox news [sic], and this gives the appearance of partisanship. This is sucking up to power. Then CNN’s Arthel Neville: Does that shed new light on, “we report, you decide,” Jack? And of course an expert from Harvard: Mr. Ailes has had a very close relation with a number of Republican presidents. I doubt this is a letter — despite what he said in the Washington Post — I doubt this is a letter that he would have sent to [Democratic President] Bill Clinton. The current reaction to Zuckerman’s claim of advising public officials? Mostly crickets. Salon covered the incident if only to promptly insist “it is safe to say that this is not true” and Zuckerman’s rebuttal was “kind of sad.” A search for Mort Zuckerman on Google News reaps scant results, mostly from blogs, and certainly nothing like the accusations launched against Fox News. Curiously missing is someone to accuse Zuckerman of “sucking up” to Democrats. No one took to the airwaves of PBS to suggest he wouldn’t have offered speechwriting help to a Republican. And no one sat on the air at CNN asking if U.S. News & World Report could be trusted as unbiased news. Any news source that is perceived as being friendly to Republicans is presumed to be a propaganda wing for the GOP. Yet when a well-respected editor openly flaunts his support of a Democrat, the media’s reaction is a collective shrug. Americans will probably never get the truth about exactly how close Zuckerman is to the White House – and that’s the way the media want it.

CNN’s Ed Henry Touts Bill Clinton as ‘Best Democratic Politician’

On Wednesday’s American Morning, CNN’s Ed Henry lauded former President Clinton as ” one of the best politicians the Democrats have ever had …in the last quarter century” and touted his apparent credibility over current President Barack Obama. Henry also speculated that if “Al Gore… had used President Clinton more in 2000, he may have been president .” Substitute anchor Drew Griffin brought on the White House correspondent 26 minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour to discuss the Obama White House’s intention to “aggressively use the former president on the campaign trail over the next few months. One party official familiar with the plan calls it a- quote, ‘no-brainer.'” During the second half of the segment, Griffin asked, “How can Bill Clinton do it all? I mean, he was picked by President Obama, basically, to rebuild Haiti. Now, they seem to be yanking him off of that and heading him out to the campaign trail, just to save the Democrats in the House in November.” Henry used the “no-brainer” quote from the unnamed Democratic Party official in his answer and immediately proceeded to use his superlatives about Clinton: HENRY: Well, they’re careful here inside the White House to say that they don’t want to yank him off the Haiti job or any of his other important Clinton Foundation work, for example, altogether. They just want him to fit it in, because they say- look, as you noted, it’s a no-brainer . This is one of the best politicians the Democrats have ever had- you know, in the last quarter century . And, as President Obama faces these credibility questions and all these various national polls right now, and as he tries to make this case that there is a real choice between the Democratic message and the Republican message, people inside the White House say there’s no one better at making that case, that contrast between the Democrats and the Republicans, than Bill Clinton . So they want to use him early and often, and they point to what happened in 2000 when Al Gore had trepidation about using Bill Clinton- sort of backfired on him, blew up in his face. If they had used President Clinton more in 2000, he may have been president, Drew . Is Henry forgetting and/or brushing aside Clinton’s own credibility issues, such as his law license in Arkansas being suspended for five years after he lied under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky? Griffin followed through by asking about the current Democratic occupant of the White House: “You know, I can’t resist, Ed, but what about using President Obama, the current president? He just doesn’t have the clout?” The CNN correspondent acknowledged Obama’s failing poll numbers, but then touted him as still being more or less equal to former President Clinton: HENRY: … Clearly, he’s facing these credibility questions because of all these national polls you’ve been talking about . The ABC one yesterday saying 6 in 10 Americans basically don’t have faith in this president right now to make the right decisions. They’re pushing back on that, obviously, inside the White House , and saying- look, they’re going to send him out on the campaign trail. But there’s certain states like Arkansas where President Obama is just deeply unpopular- lost to John McCain there by double digits. And so, they see it as a one-two punch . President Obama will be out there in some states, Bill Clinton will go to other ones, Drew.

CBS ‘Early Show’ Touted Levi Johnston When He Was Trashing the Palins, But Now That He’s Recanted….

CBS’s Early Show was eager to host Levi Johnston when he was trashing the Palin family last year – 5 segments totaling more than 24 minutes of airtime. But since admitting that some of his attacks were untrue, the morning show has barely noticed, making only two brief mentions of Johnston’s reversal and apology in a July 6 People Magazine interview . On Friday, fill-in co-host Erica Hill offered a scant 42 second discussion of Johnston’s apology in the show’s weekly ‘Early Wrap’ segment. She actually admitted that it had been “highly under-reported.” On Wednesday, amidst  2 minutes and 32 seconds of coverage of Johnston’s re-engagement to Bristol Palin, a total of 25 seconds was given to his apology.  During the Wednesday coverage, co-host Harry Smith remarked: “How many times was that young man on this show talking really horrible things about the Palins?” Later, Hill declared that Johnston “said some rather unflattering things,” causing Smith to once again describe how “Levi was on this show a bunch, several times in that era, and did interviews with [fellow Early Show co-host] Maggie [Rodriguez].”   Of the five 2009 segments about Johnston, three were exclusive interviews between him and  Rodriguez. The first interview aired on April 8, while the second was aired in two parts on October 28 and 29.  In addition, the show did September 3 segment on Johnston’s anti-Palin Vanity Fair interview and a November 17 story previewing an interview with him on the CBS entertainment news program ‘The Insider.’   During each of those broadcasts, Johnston’s allegations were hyped as important breaking news. On September 3, Smith declared: “The father of Sarah Palin’s grandchild is talking again. Someone won’t be pleased. We’ll tell you what Levi Johnston is saying.” On October 27, Smith announced: “The father of Sarah Palin’s grandson is here with some stunning allegations about the former Alaska Governor.” Teasing the November 17 segment, Rodriguez proclaimed: “Still to come, Levi Johnston says he is winning the war of words between Sarah Palin and him. We’ll hear from him when we return.” A clip was later played of Johnston: “I just look at her in disgust. It’s almost funny that she’s like 46 years old and she’s battling a 19-year-old and I’m winning and I’m telling the truth. She’s lying and losing.” After airing the second part of her interview with Johnston on October 29, Rodriguez read a response from Sarah Palin that said in part: “CBS should be ashamed for continually providing a forum to propagate lies.” Rodriguez defended herself by claiming “…we raised all those questions about credibility and his motivation for doing this.” Now that Johnston has admitted to making false statements, when will CBS admit its mistake in providing him a media platform.

Blogger Reports on Radical Imam Visit, Local Journalist Yawns

As most of the country was getting ready for the long July 4 weekend, Pajamas Media blogger and anti-terrorism consultant Patrick Poole wrote a post entitled ” Blue Suede Jihad: Major Hamas Fundraiser in the Land of Elvis .” According to Poole, the Masjid Al-Noor mosque in Memphis posted an event entitled “A Weekend with Mohammed al-Hanooti” for the non-weekend dates of July 13 through 15 on its website . He has a screenshot of the mosque’s event page and says that it is genuine, however, local Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal’s Michael Lollar disputed Poole’s findings in an article entitled ” Hamas fundraiser not speaking at mosque .” Lollar only addressed the side of the mosque’s administrators. According to Poole, Lollar made no attempt to contact him and Lollar’s language in the article was dismissive of Poole’s post, to the point of making it seem as though independently verifiable facts used by Poole were merely allegations and suppositions. “Blogger Patrick Poole wrote on the Pajamas Media site (pajamasmedia.com) that Al-Hanooti had raised millions of dollars for Hamas . . .” Lollar wrote, seemingly ignoring the data Poole was able to gather on al-Hanooti, all of it from government documents. That is just plain lazy reporting. The allegation that someone like al-Hanooti, with his very real ties to Hamas, could be on a fundraising tour of the mid-west for them, is one that ought to be taken seriously. Good reporting would have tried to get to the bottom of the controversy, decent reporting would have at least gotten a hold of Poole, but this was just plain lazy reporting. While Poole’s post left out the chronology of events, al-Hanooti has a very interesting history and a tendancy to appear in legal cases involving terrorism and terrorist financing. A Palestinian born in Haifa, he came to the United States in 1978 and first came to the attention of law enforcement in the early 90’s, when he was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator at the trial of the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman. In 1993 the FBI learned from electronic surveillance that al-Hanooti attended a meeting of Hamas supporters and fundraisers in Philadelphia where they pledged to ensure the Oslo Accords failed. An FBI source said that al-Hanooti had raised “over six million US dollars” for Hamas by 1993. Additionally, al-Hanooti was Imam of the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Virginia from 1995 to 1999 and seems to have played a role in making it fertile ground for its later radical connections, including two of the September 11 hijackers, the Fort Hood shooter and Anwar al-Awlaki. However, it is important to note that Hamas was not considered a terrorist organization for the purposes of American law until 1995 and there appears to be no evidence he raised money for Hamas since 1993, except for assisting in rasing money to pay for a Hamas leader’s legal defense . None of this excuses the fact that Hamas is a terrorist organization, regardless of weather a government explicitly marks it as such. Al-Hanooti has made radical statements and fundraised for Hamas in the past, though his current opinions are unknown and a repudiation of violence is always something to hope for from anyone.

Global Warming Doomsday Vault Deposit Trip Emits 24,300+ Pounds of Carbon

Some red hot chili peppers are on tour, and they’re emitting a lot of greenhouse gases. But it’s not the California rock band emitting carbon on a worldwide concert tour; it’s seeds from chili peppers traveling to the “doomsday” vault in Norway. A bipartisan congressional delegation visited the Svalbard Global Seed Vault July 11 as a side trip during the 19 th Annual Session of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Md ., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., among others, delivered New World chili pepper seeds to the vault, a “fail-safe back-up plan to protect the existing world food supplies from destruction in the event of a large-scale catastrophe.” “As we manage the impact of climate change and other natural and man-made disasters around the world, the seed vault in Svalbard will be the safety deposit box that ensures we can keep that food supply intact,” Cardin said in a statement. Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, is outspoken about environmental issues ranging from green jobs to clean energy . Despite Cardin’s positions, his trip to Norway left a giant carbon footprint – bigger than the footprint left in an entire year by the average American. According to carbon management organization TerraPass.com , the seven-member delegation generated more than 24,300 pounds of carbon just by flying round-trip from Washington, D.C., to Oslo, Norway. That doesn’t account for other travel associated with the trip. According to Climate Crisis , a website affiliated with Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the average person generates 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Cardin’s delegation generated about 1.5 times as much carbon dioxide just in traveling as the average person generates in an entire year. Durbin, the Senate Democrats’ second in command, has also championed climate change legislation, going as far as calling climate change a “national security threat” with his Global Climate Change Security Oversight Act , introduced in 2007: “For years, too many of us have viewed global warming as simply an environmental or economic issue. We now need to consider it as a security concern.” Despite other climate-conscious liberals hypocritically leaving giant carbon footprints , the media continue to treat it as water under the bridge, which in this case, isn’t as good as the hit Red Hot Chili Peppers song.

Bozell Column: Obama the Gipper?

The Political Left is in a meltdown. There’s no way to sugarcoat the calamity. It is falling apart. It sees the tide has turned and a possible tsunami is building, ready to crest and explode in November, washing all their dreams away. How could this be happening to them? Could it be that trillion dollar disaster otherwise know as the “stimulus,” that emergency measure needed to save the economy by creating millions of jobs except it’s accomplished absolutely nothing except putting our grandchildren yet another trillion dollars in debt? Or the auto company takeovers, something no one wanted and Congress never authorized as part of the TARP bailout fund? Or the appointment of one radical after another to nanny-state us all, including now the just recess-appointed Dr. Donald Berwick to oversee ObamaCare, a Marxist who proudly calls for the redistribution of wealth and who absolutely adores Britain’s onerous National Health Service, rationing and all? Or any one of a thousand other radical ventures proposed/discussed/enacted by this radical leftist regime? Nah. Thom Hartmann, one of the top munchkins along the Yellow Brick Road of Radioland, told his handful of listeners last week that it’s ludicrous that any conservative would conclude Obama’s a socialist. “As a guy…me, who calls himself a democratic socialist, Obama’s no socialist! He’s a middle-of-the-road Democrat, what in the 1950s was called an Eisenhower progressive, or a Republican, for that matter.” This recalls the early Clinton years, when Bob Woodward quoted Bill Clinton yelling at his staff that they were all just like “Eisenhower Republicans”….as they attempted to pass 1,300 pages of socialist Hillarycare. Government spending and regulations are thoroughly out of control but Hartmann the socialist still sees Republicans destroying democracy in the near term, never mind that the GOP is completely out of power. “I think that the Republican endgame for a small group of ideologues who have an outsized influence, the neocons within the Republican party, is to basically do away with small-d democracy in this republic, and in fact do away with it being even a republic, and turn it into basically an aristocracy.” Lord William Kristol. You have to admit it does have a ring. The dismay was even more grandiose on MSNBC last week, when the executives handed over “The Dylan Ratigan Show” to a man named Cenk Uygur, host of “The Young Turks” radio program. Put your food and drink down. He contends that Obama was more conservative than … ready?  Ronald Reagan. Here’s his formulation: 1. Obama said during the presidential primaries that he would meet with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, or North Korea without conditions. But “Republican hawk Ronald Reagan actually did it in March, 1985. At the height of the Cold War, Reagan invited newly-appointed Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the ‘Evil Empire,’ for a summit in Geneva without preconditions.” 2. Reagan “cut and run” from Lebanon in 1983. Now compare that to Obama and his troop surge in Afghanistan. 3. Obama “refused to raise taxes for anyone making less than a quarter of a million dollars,” but Reagan had “four significant tax increases” after his original tax rate cuts. 4. Reagan was “the first to host an openly-gay couple at the White House for an overnight stay?…So which President is the real conservative here?” Luckily for the small flock of strange people viewing MSNBC at home, both of Mr. Uygur’s guests told him he was all wrong. Frank Donatelli, one of President Reagan’s political director, was deliciously blunt. “That’s the silliest thing that I’ve ever heard….It’s an incomplete and distorted picture of everything.” Donatelli calmly related that Reagan cut taxes overall, negotiated with Gorbachev after the little precondition of a complete defense buildup, and he won the Cold War, while “Obama hasn’t won anything.” Even David Weigel, the Palin/Limbaugh/Drudge-insulting commentator beloved by the likes of Keith Olbermann, dismissed the Uygur stupidity. “He’s not a conservative. Come on!” Leftists may be delusional in thinking Barack Obama is some kind of Reaganite. But if that’s delusional, how does one describe Janeane Garofalo? As always, her nuttiness is in a league (institution?) of its own. On The Huffington Post, she groused of conservatives that “They own the media and they dominate the media and they dominate the conversation. But of course liberals are proud. They have everything to be proud of. But they just don’t have much say. You know, they don’t have networks and huge radio networks and megachurches and seats in Congress.” Liberals don’t have the seats in Congress? Garofalo isn’t just wrong, she’s in meltdown.
