‘Dallas’ Reboot: Meet The New Oilmen (And Women!)

Josh Henderson and Jesse Metcalfe go head to head in TNT’s new show. By Kara Warner Jesse Metcalfe and Josh Henderson Photo: WireImage Remember when summertime used to mean endless repeats and no new TV shows? Times, they are a-changin’, with more and more networks opting to debut new material during the summer months. One of the most buzz-worthy new summer offerings is TNT’s reboot of “Dallas,” a modernized version of the hugely popular and iconic ’80s nighttime soap. Fans of the original, which ran from 1978 to 1991, should be delighted to know that Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy are still front and center as the show’s leading men, but they are joined by a slew of fresh young faces. Why you’ll love him on “Dallas” : Because he plays the spoiled, wealthy, manipulative bad boy, a perfect heir to the original J.R.’s love-to-hate-him shtick. Everyone loves a bad boy, right? Will ‘Snow White’ Beat Out ‘Men In Black,’ ‘Avengers’ At Weekend Box Office?

Experts weigh in on whether Kristen Stewart’s star power can overtake current box-office champs leading up to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3. By Ryan J. Downey Kristen Stewart as “Snow White” Photo: Universal Last weekend, “Men in Black 3” finally ended the box-office domination of “The Avengers,” which saw the superhero team-up movie smashing world records with the combined might of Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield, Iron Man’s snarky wit and the Hulk’s green fists. During this MTV Movie Awards weekend, “Snow White and the Huntsman” will do battle against them both, with “Thor” himself, Chris Hemsworth, in one of the title roles alongside Kristen Stewart, best-known for a little franchise called “Twilight.” Will Stewart’s vampire fanatic fanbase focus their attention on “Snow White”? Will Thor’s Asgardian thunder rain down more box-office coin in this role? Keep in mind this isn’t the first “Snow White”-centered movie to hit multiplexes this year. Julia Roberts flopped in “Mirror, Mirror” just two months ago. “Huntsman” is headed to theaters with similar reviews (50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomatometer” at press time). So how will it do? “It’s going to be close, but ‘Snow White’ should edge out ‘Men in Black 3,’ ” HitFix ‘s Gregory Ellwood told MTV News. MTV Next Movie Executive Editor Kevin Polowy concurred. “Its competition isn’t that daunting. ‘Men in Black’ did well last weekend but hardly gangbusters. ‘The Avengers,’ which is still hanging ridiculously tough a month after opening, might actually be more of a threat than last week’s big winner. But ‘Snow White’ has an alluring cast, the potential to draw all demographics, and most importantly for a summer blockbuster, a whole lotta action.” Jeff Bock, Exhibitor Relations Senior Box Office Analyst, gave the edge to “Huntsman” over “Mirror, Mirror,” which opened at #3 at the box office with just $18.1 million. He credited the newer film’s stronger chances to its tone, likening its style to box-office juggernaut “Alice in Wonderland.” “Universal’s ‘Snow White’ is the one everyone was waiting for; [this one is] done on a much grander scale, more akin to ‘Alice’ and very dark, like the Brothers Grimm fairy tale it spawned from.” ” ‘Snow White’ very clearly wants to be a ‘Lord of the Rings’-like swashbuckling epic, which should draw a bigger, more enticed audience,” agreed Polowy.” “The Avengers” is now the fourth-biggest movie ever, in terms of gross, domestically. The power of “Twilight,” of course, continues. But what will the success or failure of “Snow White” mean for the careers of its respective stars outside of their tried-and-true franchises? “This movie has been sold as Charlize Theron as the evil queen,” Ellwood pointed out. “You could argue that Universal hasn’t done enough to showcase Hemsworth in the movie, especially after the success of ‘The Avengers.’ ” Bock was quick to note talk of a possible “Huntsman”-centered sequel. “Hollywood is pretty smitten with Hemsworth. In the end though, as an ensemble piece, this has very little risk involved for him. If it were to tank, the blame would likely fall on Kristen Stewart, with critics jumping on the ‘she can’t carry a film other than ‘Twilight’ bandwagon. It is quite apparent when watching the movie that the real stars are Hemsworth and Theron, who both give powerhouse performances.” “[The movie’s success or failure] will be very important for Kristen Stewart,” Polowy said. “This is Stewart’s first high-profile starring role outside of ‘Twilight,’ and it’s loaded with variables. Can she open a summer blockbuster? Can she do action? Can she do accents? Can she refrain from biting her lip so much?” “Any opening over $30 million outside of ‘Twilight’ is good for Stewart,” offered Ellwood. “If ‘Snow White’ has legs, it’s a sign she’s can easily transition as a leading lady in tentpole films once her days as Bella are over.” Speaking of “biting” and “legs,” there is another film swimming toward the box office: “Piranha 3DD.” It’s 2010 predecessor, “Piranha 3-D,” was a surprise hit with critics (73 percent on the Tomatometer, which is like an Oscar for that type of horror flick). It didn’t collect huge amounts of cash, but it certainly did well enough for the Weinstein Company/ Dimension Films to warrant a follow-up, for which director John Gulager (“Feast”) took over for Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”). However, despite the critical love for the last one, “Piranha 3DD” sat at a lowly 20 percent on the Tomatometer at press time. “Critics loved the first Piranha because it exploited everything cheesy about campy horror films — and 3-D flicks — in tongue-in-cheek style. The sequel is merely exploitation of that success,” Bock said. “Based on the theater count of 75 theaters, you can see that this one will go belly up quick and flushed down the drain.” Flesh-eating fish and “Snow White” aside, the $600 million question, as Polowy put it, is whether anything will beat “The Avengers” in 2012. All three of the experts we contacted agreed that only one film stands a chance. Which film is that? Let’s just say it involves a cape, a cowl and maybe a broken back. “There’s only one candidate who could come close, and its name is ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ ” Polowy said of the forthcoming flick, for which an exclusive clip will premiere at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. “Assuming [filmmaker] Christopher Nolan recaptures the magic of his last Batman blockbuster, and Tom Hardy’s Bane proves a viable replacement for Heath Ledger’s Joker, it will be close.” “It will have to be as strong critically as ‘The Dark Knight,’ ” said Ellwood. “That may be the only way to pull in [people who visit the movies four to six times per year]. Besides the added benefit of higher 3-D ticket prices, ‘The Avengers’ became a de facto family film, something ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ clearly isn’t, which helped fuel its coffers. Warner Bros. will need strong repeat business and massive adoration for ‘Rises’ to overtake ‘The Avengers.’ It’s arguably Batman’s toughest challenge yet.” Bock agreed it’s a huge challenge for Bats, one that may prove more defeating than anything Bane could cook up. “Even considering ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is probably the most anticipated threequel since ‘Return of the Jedi,’ ‘The Avengers’ is playing like Earth’s mightiest sequel. And that’s exactly what it is.” “Sorry Batman, you’ve been busted by Hollywood’s box-office brigade,” he concluded. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! ‘Kony 2012’ Video Went Viral With Rihanna’s Help

‘She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you’re in this video,’ Jedidiah Jenkins of Invisible Children organization tells MTV News. By Jacob Soboroff Rihanna Photo: Getty Images At noon Pacific time last Monday, Jedidiah Jenkins, a member of the nonprofit organization Invisible Children’s inner circle , saw the group’s 278th YouTube video uploaded and wasn’t sure what to expect. Jenkins had written the script to the film, the 30-minute documentary “Kony 2012,” about the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, and it had been a grind. “It was really the hardest movie we’ve ever made” in the nearly decade-long history of the group, he told MTV News in a phone interview from Los Angeles. The film is now the most viral video ever, with more than 70 million views on YouTube alone in the video’s first six days thanks in no small part to an army of young supporters who flexed their power by using social media to drive celebrities and friends to watch and share the video. Creating online content and distributing it with social media was nothing new for Invisible Children — the group already had 450,000 Facebook friends the night before the video was posted and they’ve used YouTube to share videos about their cause since 2006 — but the way this video spread was something the group could never have planned. Jenkins said the group posted the video at noon on Monday and that evening hosted a screening at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles with celebrities Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman, who took to Twitter at 9:42 p.m., immediately after watching the film. “We had a strategy to screen it at CAA with the few celebrities we know, get them in the room, make them watch it,” Jenkins said. Within the 24 hours that followed, celebrities including comedian Kelly Oxford, Ryan Seacrest, Diddy, Justin Bieber, Oprah and Steve Carrell had tweeted about the video after being notified about it by their fans thanks to a call-to-action in the documentary. Soon enough, Jenkins’ phone was ringing off the hook, including a call from Rihanna . “She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you’re in this video,” Jenkins recalled. “She just kind of responded and clicked on the link that one of her fans followed. It blew her mind. She tweeted it immediately. One of her music video directors, Anthony Mandler, actually went to Uganda with me to see our programs on the ground in November. Anthony texted her. They conference called me at 11 at night and I missed the call twice, because I was at a late dinner. Three calls in a row means it’s an emergency,” so Jenkins picked up. “Anthony said, ‘Jed, I have Rihanna on the line. She wants to talk to you.’ ” Jenkins continued. He recalled the 24-year-old singer saying, “I’ve never been moved like this, I’ve never been involved. I want to go big. I want to get involved. I want this to be my thing and I want to blow this up. I want to get kids involved. I’m just responding to my fans. They’re so moved by this.” Wherever you land in the debate over the organization’s tactics and the film’s accuracy, “Kony 2012” is undeniably a social media phenomenon made possible by support from celebrities encouraged to get involved by their young fans. Even CNN’s Piers Morgan admitted he first heard about the movement from his 14-year-old son. As of press time, Invisible Children has nearly 3 million likes on Facebook, and the question remains: What’s next for this enormous group of engaged and active young people when so many of their peers are apathetic? Jenkins said the group is considering participating in a voter-registration drive as the 2012 election approaches. But he admitted that first he and his colleagues have to get caught up. “We couldn’t have ever, ever imagined that this would be the fastest viral movement in history,” he said. “We are dealing with an unprecedented amount of attention. It’s a huge amount of responsibility. It’s exhausting. We’re excited for the challenge, but it’s intimidating too.” Related Artists Rihanna

Jonah Hill Can’t Match Lindsay Lohan’s ‘SNL’ Ratings

Last week’s Lohan-hosted episode scored bigger ratings but fewer laughs. By Gil Kaufman Tom Hanks and Jonah Hill on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC The sketches were mostly funnier, Tom Hanks swung by to show off one of his two Oscar trophies and Stefon was in the house to giggle his way through another classic list of nightlife tips (seriously, google “hoombas”). Plus there was a sure-to-be-classic-but-so-wrong sketch about a scientist touting his breakthrough teaching an ape to talk that did not go the way anyone intended. In short, Jonah Hill had a pretty good night hosting “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, but according to the Hollywood Reporter , he couldn’t quite reach the ratings heights set last weekend by Lindsay Lohan.
The magazine reported that the Hill episode, which featured two songs by the Shins, drew a 4.3 rating and a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, which was down 21 percent from Lohan’s turn last week. Of course, Lohan’s much-hyped return to the “SNL” stage was eagerly anticipated, but mostly for the curiosity factor of whether the fallen actress could pull it off. Critics savaged her stiff acting and obvious cue-card reading. But Hill was looser on his episode, poking fun at himself in a funny cold open about his wild awards-show run and Oscar nomination for “Moneyball” in which he claimed he was still a regular guy, only to treat his pals at “SNL” with contempt and actor-y imperiousness. The “21 Jump Street” star reprised his obnoxious six-year-old character Adam Grossman, who savaged his dad’s J-Date girlfriend during a tense Benihana dinner and took an endless barrage of tennis balls to the crotch in a painful digital short. A Liza Minnelli sketch fell flat, but people are probably going to still be scratching their heads all week about the Brutus sketch in which Hill was exposed as a scientist who taught an ape how to talk, only to be outed as a pervert by said ape. The highlight, though, was what seemed like a throwaway sketch at the end when Hill’s character hires a string quartet to serenade his wife on their anniversary, but then grabs the mic and starts inexplicably rapping to Coolio’s dead homie homage “C U When U Get There.” Co-star Kristen Wiig’s character was pissed at first, but when she finally got on board the big smile on Wiig’s face and the rest of the cast’s obvious delight saved what could have been a lame, throwaway bit. The Shins performed two new songs, including the single “Simple Song” and “It’s Only Life.”

Amy Winehouse Family Open To Biopic

Dad Mitch Winehouse reversed course and said he’d consider a movie. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Marc Broussely/ Redferns Singer Amy Winehouse had a brief career full of jubilant highs and crushing lows. From Grammy wins and multi-platinum worldwide sales for her breakthrough, Back to Black album and recording with Tony Bennett
to drug arrests, struggles with substance abuse and her untimely death at age 27
as a result of excessive alcohol intake, Winehouse’s roller-coaster ride seems primed for the big screen. After initially rejecting reports that a biopic was in the works and saying that the family would not grant the rights to the “Rehab” singer’s music for such a project, a spokesperson for the Winehouse’s clarified on Tuesday that “[father] Mitch [Winehouse] and the family would entertain ideas perhaps for a film but only one they were sure would tell the truth,” according to Entertainment Weekly. On Monday, Mitch Winehouse told England’s Daily Mail that he would not let Amy’s music be used in a rumored biopic that is reportedly being shopped and produced by his daughter’s boyfriend, Reg Traviss. “It would hardly be a biopic without the music and we’d never allow the songs to be released,” Winehouse told the paper. He also threw cold water on rumors that Lady Gaga could be up for the role of his late daughter. “I never said Lady Gaga will play Amy in film,” he Tweeted on Monday . In the meantime, Mitch is working on a memoir, “Amy, My Daughter,” due out in October. Winehouse’s posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures ,
debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 charts this week on sales of nearly 114,000. Related Videos Amy Winehouse Remembered Related Artists Amy Winehouse
