George Stephanopoulos Zeroes-In on Meghan McCain’s Spat With Palins

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos interviewed media darling and nominal Republican Meghan McCain on Tuesday’s Good Morning America and devoted the bulk of the segment to her love-hate relationship with Sarah Palin and her daughter Bristol. Stephanopoulos devoted so much time to the Palin issue that McCain interjected, “For the record, my book is not just about Sarah and Bristol.” The anchor gushingly endorsed the McCain daughter’s new book, “Dirty Sexy Politics,” at the beginning of the interview, which aired 42 minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour: ” It is savvy, it is saucy, and it’s just what you’d expect from the first daughter of a presidential candidate ever fired by her father’s campaign .” He then labeled his guest a “fun writer” and first asked about her “firing,” in which she actually sent away from the main stops of her father’s presidential campaign and did a bus tour in the battleground state of Ohio. After four questions on her “firing,” Stephanopoulos raised the issue of Mrs. Palin with McCain. She put all of her answers in the context of herself and her experiences, while the ABC anchor pressed her on the former governor of Alaska, with two negative follow-up questions about Palin and two neutral: STEPHANOPOULOS: Since the campaign, you had said you didn’t want to talk about Sarah Palin. But you write about her quite a bit in the book. You say there were a lot of things you like about Sarah Palin, but you also point out that she snubbed your Mom’s efforts to reach out to the Palins, that she wasn’t much of a team player. You believe- you talk about doubts you had at the end where you thought she actually hurt the campaign. ” MCCAIN: Yes, but I do clearly state at the end that we did not lose because of her, and I’m speaking out now because I do have conflicting feelings about her. I mean, she brought so much momentum and enthusiasm to the campaign. I mean, you saw the crowds double, and you saw a lot more women coming to rallies- STEPHANOPOULOS: But you also write that she brought- quote, ‘drama, stress, complications, panic, and loads of uncertainty.’ MCCAIN: (laughs) It’s true. I mean, a lot of things happen, but I think that’s how campaigns are in general, no matter who comes, and- you know, I respect her, as a feminist or Republican feminist, and going out there and working for women, especially Republican women. It’s no secret that I’m more socially liberal than she is, but I’m here to say that two different kinds of Republican women can work together for the same cause. STEPHANOPOULOS: And you talked about this moment in the campaign where you’re being interviewed, and you almost got tongue-tied when you were asked about Sarah Palin. You said you had doubts about her. What are the doubts? MCCAIN: It was a reflection on me, because she was so celebrated in the Republican Party, and it’s- again, no secret that I’m so unlike her, and I thought, how am I ever going to fit in? How am I ever going to do this? And it’s still something that I struggle with today because people so see me as sort of this rebel and this new Republican, which I take pride in, but a lot of, sort of, older Republicans seem to have a problem placing me. STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, you say there’s room in the party for both of you, but you want a Republican to win in 2012- you say that as well. Could she be your candidate? MCCAIN: Anyone could be my candidate at this point. I really don’t like these hypothetical questions, but I think that so many candidates are doing or- you know, people that could be running right now, are making very smart moves. I think Mitt Romney is doing a lot of smart things right now. I think it’s going to be a very interesting election, no matter what happens (unintelligible)- STEPHANOPOULOS: Would you vote for her? MCCAIN: It depends [on] the situation. You know, I’d have to hear more on what happens in the primaries. As you’re well aware, anything can happen in the primaries, and I would have to see. It was when Stephanopoulos brought up McCain’s spat with Bristol Palin over teen abstinence and teen pregnancy that the liberal Republican replied with her “my book is not just about Sarah and Bristol” line and added, “a lot of fun stories.” The anchor replied, “I want to ask you about one of those stories in a second. But first, you say that at that point, the campaign seemed to be glamorizing teen pregnancy, that the campaign really wanted to suggest that a pro-life message was more important than the message of how to avoid teen pregnancy to begin with? ” McCain answered, in part, “I have a sister who is almost exactly- my little sister Bridget is almost exactly Bristol’s age, and I just know that I want teens in this country to be aware of what can happen when you have sex. You can die from sex in this era, and not necessarily- I just think that the pro-abstinence complete campaign isn’t necessarily the most effective one.” Stephanopoulos concluded the interview by asking his guest about another of her “fun stories” involving a visit to the White House where she was apparently “dis-invited” from a lunch at the White House with Laura Bush and her daughter Jenna. The anchor repeated his endorsement of McCain’s book at the very end of the interview: “Meghan McCain, it is a terrific book, it’s a fun book, it’s a revealing book about life in politics as well .” ABC has promoted Ms. McCain’s liberal flavor of Republicanism in the past with her appearance as a guest host on The View, where she slammed conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham , and profiled her support of same-sex “marriage” on World News .

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Alum Sizes Up Bristol Palin, The Situation

‘The Situation seems very disciplined,’ Niecy Nash tells MTV News of the ‘Jersey Shore’ star’s famous abs. By Kara Warner Niecy Nash at the HBO Emmy party Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for a new season of “Dancing With the Stars,” but with Monday’s big casting announcement, the spotlight is on the new celeb steppers. The next news fans are waiting for are the celeb/pro pairings, one of which was revealed Tuesday morning (August 31) on “Good Morning America”: Bristol Palin and two-time champ Mark Ballas . MTV News caught up with last season’s sassy comic relief, Niecy Nash, who offered a few thoughts on the new castmembers — namely Palin and “Jersey Shore” standout Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. ” ‘Dancing With the Stars’ is the hardest and most fun thing I’ve ever done,” she said. “I will tell you, for people who are untrained, it is a challenge.” Nash added that if Sorrentino’s dedication to his famous chest is any indication, he might have the stamina to stay on the show for a while. “The Situation seems very disciplined,” Nash said. “You gotta do something to get 45 abs. So maybe he has what it takes to stick with it.” Nash worried that juggling long rehearsals and taking care of baby Tripp could prove to be a challenge for Bristol. “Bristol, you know, she’s been through a lot,” Nash said of Sarah Palin’s 20-year-old daughter. “It might be hard on her. But, you know, if you could get together with Levi [Johnston], you ought to be able to do anything,” she joked. Nash added that if and when she is asked to come back to the show for a special guest dance number, she’ll do “anything where I can shake myself.” What do you think of Bristol Palin and the Situation being cast on “Dancing With the Stars”? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Carries On Tradition Of Casting MTV Stars

New castmembers the Situation and Audrina Patridge join the ranks of Steve-O, Kelly Osbourne and Drew Lachey. By Kyle Anderson Lacey Schwimmer and Steve-O Photo: ABC When the new season of ABC’s hit competition show “Dancing With the Stars” kicks off on September 20, it will feature two names from the MTV family: “Jersey Shore” breakout star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and “The Hills” head-turner Audrina Patridge . The two will compete against the likes of David Hasselhoff, Brandy, former NBA star Rick Fox, Michael Bolton, Bristol Palin, former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, Disney star Kyle Massey, “Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson, comedian Margaret Cho and “Dirty Dancing” legend Jennifer Grey. While we won’t know how Patridge or the Situation will fair until the first step is executed when the show premieres in three weeks, they both have a lot to live up to. MTV stars repeatedly show up as castmembers on “Dancing With the Stars,” and while their level of success has been mixed, they always leave an impression. One of them even won once. Drew Lachey, the former member of 98 Degrees and a staple on the hit MTV reality show “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” took home the mirror-ball trophy back in February of 2006. In the finals, Lachey narrowly beat out Jerry Rice (the former NFL wide receiver and a big fan favorite) and Stacy Keibler (a former WWE performer who has a bit of MTV history of her own — she appeared on the wrestling promotion’s “Heat” show on MTV at the beginning of the decade). Another MTV reality star had significantly less success. Shanna Moakler, one of the stars of the MTV series “Meet the Barkers,” appeared on the show in the fall of 2006. “Meet the Barkers” followed the lives of Moakler and her husband, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, along with their three children. While Moakler’s wardrobe certainly kept her in the minds of people watching “Meet the Barkers,” she didn’t leave the same kind of impression on the “Dancing With the Stars” viewers and judges, as she was sent home during the second week of competition. Kelly Osbourne fared significantly better. Though she struggled early in the fall 2009 season, the breakout star of “The Osbournes” ended up becoming one of the better narratives of the season, as she overcame injuries and rough treatment from the judges to become a pretty excellent dancer. She performed well in the finals against Mya and eventual winner Donny Osmond. Steve-O also became something of a dark horse during his run on the show. The “Jackass” featured player quickly became a favorite among fans of the show, and he outlasted the likes of Playboy model Holly Madison, actress Denise Richards and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Steve-O ended up finishing in eighth place, a strong showing for a guy who has made his living hurting himself. And even though he got knocked out during the second week of the competition, you can’t overlook Buzz Aldrin’s impact on “Dancing With the Stars.” Though Aldrin is certainly best known for his accomplishments in the space program, he is perhaps the ultimate MTV star, as he was the model for the Moonman, the prize that winners take home at the Video Music Awards . Aldrin nabbed some of the lowest scores in the history of the show, but he did it with a great deal of charm. How do you think Audrina and the Situation will fare on “Dancing With the Stars”? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 11 Lineup Revealed

MTV stars Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and Audrina Patridge are in the mix. By Kara Warner Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images It’s that time of the year again: ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” casting announcement is here! The rumors have been circulating, guesses made and, finally, the official list is here. As usual, the new crop of celebrity dancers is a band of merry misfits. But we here at MTV News can’t help but smile that two of the newest castmembers are, in a sense, homegrown: Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino Something tells us this “Jersey Shore” breakout star isn’t going to have a problem showing off a little chest on “DWTS.” The self-proclaimed guido has already made an impression on reality-TV fans with his one-liners and manscaped abs; now he can put all the time he spent fist-pumping in Seaside Heights nightclubs to good use on the dance floor. Audrina Patridge The brunet starlet made her Hollywood debut on MTV’s “The Hills” as Heidi and Lauren’s aspiring-model neighbor. Patridge has since pursued an acting career, scoring parts in “Sorority Row” and “Into the Blue 2.” With “The Hills” signing off this past July, the California girl is ready to show off her fancy footwork on a new reality show. Brandy Once known primarily as the spunky and sweet teen singer of “Sittin’ Up in My Room” and “I Wanna Be Down” and the star of the sitcom “Moesha,” Brandy Norwood is back on television with her brother Ray J in the VH1 reality show “Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business.” Norwood was also rumored to be dating rapper Flo Rida in the spring. Bristol Palin By now she is no stranger to the spotlight. First thrust into the public eye via her mom’s VP candidacy with John McCain in 2008, Bristol Palin was just 17 when it was announced she was pregnant and engaged to her child’s father, Levi Johnston. Palin currently juggles the duties of a single mom with public speaking, advocating abstinence to teens. She also appeared as herself on an episode of “The Secret Life of an American Teenager.” Her relationship with Johnston has been the epitome of on-again, off-again (they are currently “off”). Jennifer Grey We can hear the “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” quotes now. Die-hard fans of the beloved “Dirty Dancing” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” actress are likely clamoring to get tickets to see Grey step back into her dancing shoes — surely she’ll dance to “Time of My Life” (the classic “Dancing” number), right? In recent years, Grey has appeared on TV and in film, often guest-starring as herself. David Hasselhoff Hasselhoff — a.k.a. “The Hoff” — is no stranger to reality television, having just ended his stint as a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” Hasselhoff first rose to fame on the ’80s TV hit “Knight Rider,” then as forever-tan lifeguard Mitch Buchannon on “Baywatch.” He also enjoyed a brief career as a pop star in Germany, with two #1 hits on the German pop charts. Plus, he knows how to ham it up and take criticism — just check out his “Comedy Central Roast.” Florence Henderson The spunky 76-year-old is best known for playing the matriarch on “The Brady Show” in the late ’60s and early ’70s, but she hasn’t been a stranger over the past few decades, appearing on “The Surreal Life” in 2006 and even guest-hosting “WWE Monday Night Raw.” Hopefully she’ll fare a little better than previous AARP-eligible contestants (see: Cloris Leachman, Buzz Aldrin). Margaret Cho The racy comedian first made an impression with her 1994 sitcom “All American Girl,” which only lasted one season. Since then, she has written several books and found success on the road with her stand-up act. She also scored her own reality show in 2008: VH1’s “The Cho Show.” Let’s see if her entertaining comedy routine can translate into “DWTS” success. Kurt Warner One of two former pro athletes in the cast, Warner is a much-loved (for both his work on the football field and off) former NFL quarterback. Warner played 12 seasons for three different teams: the St. Louis Rams (with whom he helped win the Super Bowl and MVP in 2000), New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals. Warner holds several NFL records, including the three highest single-game passing yardage totals in Super Bowl history. Michael Bolton Anyone listening to top 40 radio in the ’90s grew to either love or hate Bolton’s chart-toppers “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.” Combined with his signature (and sultry) tenor voice and his formerly flowing locks, Bolton was a force to be reckoned with. The balladeer has been in the news recently after word got out that he and Lady Gaga were working together on his upcoming album, One World One Love, due in September. Rick Fox Many former pro athletes have found success on the show (Apolo Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi, Emmett Smith, etc.), so the addition of the former NBA player — he played for the Celtics and the Lakers — is not too much of a surprise. Fox is also well-known for being Vanessa Williams’ ex-husband and a sometimes actor with bit parts in TV and film. Kyle Massey Perhaps due to the success and popularity of their last Disney kid, “Hannah Montana” actor Cody Linley, ABC added “That’s So Raven” and “Cory in the House” star Kyle Massey to the roster. The plucky 19-year-old — who is also a rapper — is the cast’s youngest member. Perhaps he’ll wow the audience with his dance moves and lyrical stylings. Are you looking forward to the new season of “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments below! Related Photos ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 11 Cast Revealed! Related Artists Brandy

THG Asks, Answers: Who is Antwaun Cook?

With Fantasia Barrino having been released from the hospital following her overdose on aspirin this week (manager Brian Dickens says his client “has been lifted up by the outpouring of love and support from her fans”), celebrity gossip followers are left with one question: Who, exactly, is Antwaun Cook? This married man is at the center of the Fantasia drama, as a recent statement from the singer acknowledged an 11-month relationship him, one that definitely included matching tattoos and may have included a sex tape , at least according to Antwaun wife, Paula. Here’s what we can tell readers about Antwaun Cook : He met Fantasia while managing a T-Mobile store in Charlotte. The singer was interested in him because he was not in the music industry. “He’s just a regular dude,” she told People months ago. He’s an East Carolina University graduate and former member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He obtained his real estate license in 2006 and joined the firm Keller Williams Realty this month. Despite Fantasia supposed belief that Cook and his wife separated last year, legal documents confirm they only started living apart in June 2010. They also have two kids together. Barrino could also be in extra trouble due to the location of her residence: North Carolina is one of seven states that allows a party to sue a “home wrecker.”

Producer Discusses Levi Johnston TV Bid For Mayor

Bill Simmons, a.k.a. The Sports Guy of ESPN fame, recently pondered if anyone with less talent has ever had a longer shelf life than Levi Johnston. He makes a fair point, and the baby daddy of Bristol Palin shows no signs of fading into the sunset anytime soon. Any possible PR is good PR, right? He’ll be putting that theory to the test with a new show, Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office . Yup, he’s running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. The current office-holder doesn’t seem all that worried about a challenge from a 20-year-old high school dropout, but hey, you never know, right? The producers at Stone & Company Entertainment are excited to bring his bid for office to your TVs. Head honcho Scott Stone spoke to EW about … The current status : “We’re pitching the show as advertised, Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office . We’re going up to Alaska to shoot for a couple of weeks. Once we have our story set up properly, we’ll start pitching it to the networks.” Is Levi Johnston ready for a career in politics? On who will air this nonsense : “I tend to do shows that could run multiple places. We will target the ones that are most interested first, and suffice to say we’ve gotten a ton of interest since the announcement went out yesterday.” On Levi’s reaction to the idea : “Levi’s a young guy, and running for office is a scary proposition and a big commitment. He thought about it, and then he came back and said, “I thought about it, let’s talk and see if we can do this.” On whether the Palins will be involved : “We went into this with zero expectation for any involvement from the Palins. If that changes, that’s purely their choice. We would welcome it, but it’s going to be the Levi Johnston show. On Levi’s political leanings : “Levi is well known all over the country, and you can be sure he’ll take advantage of it for his campaign. He’s already come out and said that he’s half-redneck and half-Hollywood. The Hollywood part isn’t going away.” Would you elect Levi mayor?

Wasilla Mayor to Levi Johnston: Keep it in Your Pants!

Levi Johnston has his work cut out if he wants to be mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Current officeholder Verne Rupright says he needs to start by keeping his clothes on. If Levi really wants the office once held by Sarah Palin, who went on to become Alaska’s Worst Governor Ever and a professional celebrity, Verne has some advice: “Get your high school diploma and keep your clothes on,” said Rupright , who has a B.A. and J.D. to his name, when contacted by celebrity gossip site TMZ. “Voters like it that way.” We know Levi Johnston dispatches of clothes awfully well, but can he oust Verne Rupright from the mayor’s office in his hometown of Wasilla, Alaska? The 20-year-old Levi Johnston, who just broke up with Bristol Palin, announced he’ll be running for Mayor of Wasilla next year as part of his new reality show. Might he pose a serious challenge to Rupright? The Vietnam war veteran, who’s been in public service longer than Johnston has been alive, says, “I don’t know if I could handle those responsibilities when I was Levi’s age. I was still trying to figure out how to put on my uniform.” He’s got a tough battle ahead. We don’t see anyone named Palin casting a ballot in his favor, and even his own mom, Sherry, can’t vote for him after her felony drug dealing conviction last year. But it should be fun to watch.
