US/UN Military Action In Libya Could Start As Early As Sunday

Now that Moammar Gadhafi has closed off the airspace around Libya and threatened to hit the people with a “final assault,” the U.N. has voted to take “all necessary means” to protect the people of Libya. The U.N. Security Council resolution was approved late Thursday with the backing of the United States, France and Britain, hours after Gadhafi vowed to launch a final assault and crush the nearly 5-week-old rebellion against him. President Barack Obama telephoned the leaders of Britain and France after the vote, the White House said. U.S. officials speaking after a closed-door briefing in Congress said the attempt to ground Gadhafi’s air force could begin by Sunday or Monday with the use of jet fighters, bombers and surveillance aircraft. The British Cabinet held an emergency meeting as British planes were expected to take part in the international military action. NATO envoys in Brussels also were considering next steps. Military experts cautioned that the consequences of such action are unpredictable. The former head of the British army, Richard Dannatt, said it was crucial to proceed cautiously “so we don’t get into the kind of situation that we got into in Iraq by not having a Plan B for the morning after.” But the Western powers faced pressure to act urgently after weeks spent deliberation over what to do about Gadhafi as his regime gained momentum. Gadhafi, calling in to Libyan television on Thursday, said his forces would “rescue” the people of Benghazi, the eastern Mediterranean port city that has become the de-facto rebel capital and staging ground. For those who resist, Gadhafi said, there would be “no mercy or compassion.” “This is your happy day, we will destroy your enemies,” he said, warning the people of Benghazi not to stand alongside the opposition. “Prepare for this moment to get rid of the traitors. Tomorrow we will show the world, to see if the city is one of traitors or heroes.” Gadhafi also pledged to respond harshly to U.N.-sponsored attacks in an interview with Portuguese television broadcast just before the vote. “If the world is crazy,” he said, “we will be crazy, too.” That should end any doubt you might have as to whether or not this dude is a nutjob. Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim struck a more conciliatory tone, offering to negotiate a cease-fire with the rebels. He welcomed the Security Council’s concern for the people of Libya but called on the world not to allow them to receive weapons. “If any countries do that, they will be inviting Libyans to kill each other,” he said. The civil unrest in Libya started a little over a month ago. And the death toll is somewhere between 150 or over 1,000 people, depending on whether you ask Gadhafi or the rebels. Source

Adele’s 21 Set To Debut At #1

Projected big sales come after a slew of the singer’s tour dates had to be moved to larger venues. By Alex Chapman Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Fame has never been Adele’s top priority, but these days, there’s no stopping the singer’s rapid rise in popularity. Adele’s star is only growing brighter on both sides of the pond. According to the singer’s website , a slew of her U.S. tour dates had to be moved to bigger venues to meet popular demand (she even added extra gigs in New York). In addition, according to Reuters, her latest album, 21, is projected to move as many as 300,000 copies by Sunday, guaranteeing a #1 debut in America. The 22-year-old has mentioned in the past that she has no desire to share the celebrity of her contemporaries. “I was just thinking, imagine being someone like Cheryl Cole or Katy Perry or Gaga, where you’ve got to be conniving to have a normal day,” Adele told Britain’s The Sun earlier this month. “That scares the life out of me. I don’t think I’d be able to carry on doing music if it got to that point. I don’t think it ever will — I don’t think I’m the kind of artist where that will happen.” The singer/songwriter has also mentioned that she prefers a smaller scene to an outsize stadium. “I can’t do arenas because I’m not [Lady Gaga],” Adele was recently quoted as saying. But don’t let the singer’s seemingly reserved mentality fool you: Adele wants her music to cross over to the States, even if she doesn’t desire the forceful spotlight that follows. “It’s a big deal in England,” Adele told MTV News of success in America. “I didn’t think I’d ever release a record here.” Have you checked out Adele’s latest album? ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Billy Boyd Marries Ali McKinnon

Actor who played Pippin in trilogy weds Wednesday (December 29). By Terri Schwartz Billy Boyd Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Love continued to linger in the air Wednesday (December 29) as Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin the hobbit in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Ali McKinnon. Though he earned international fame and legions of fans for a quest for a different One Ring, The Evening Times reports Boyd kept the wedding very small and intimate. Boyd and McKinnon met in 2002 at a pantomime (British winter musical comedy theater) she was appearing in. The two have a 4-year-old son, Jack, and have been living together in Glasgow’s West End for several years. The Evening Times reports the two were married at Oran Mor, just around the corner from their home. The venue sounds like something straight out of Middle Earth, but it’s actually a converted church that was turned into a cultural center including a couple of restaurants and bars, a nightclub and, of course, a beautiful private-events space. Oran Mor wedding coordinator Louise Turner said she’d met with the couple a few times and “they have been lovely to deal with.” She said only 30 friends and family members attended the ceremony, and the reception was planned for about 160. “It’s not a massive bash, and it will be quite intimate,” Turner said. Though the “Rings” cast has stayed close since the premiere of “Return of the King” in 2003, the Times implied that Boyd’s co-stars — including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom — did not attend the wedding. In addition to his role in the three “Lord of the Rings” films, Boyd won acclaim for his roles in “The Stone of Destiny,” “The Flying Scotsman” and “On a Clear Day.” He was named Britain’s most eligible bachelor, placing ahead of Prince William, who got engaged this year. Send your well-wishes to the couple in the comments section below!

It didn’t take long for Rachel Weisz to find a new man. A little over a month since the actress announced her split from Darren Aronofsky, she was spotted holding hands with Daniel Craig in southwestern England. The movie stars were spotted entering a small pub together over the weekend. They “looked like a romantic couple in a film,” a witness told Britain’s News of the World of Craig and Weisz. “They were laughing and chatting and hanging on to each other’s words and stopping to take photos of each other.” The pair will star together in Dream House , scheduled for a March release. They have denied reports of any romantic relationship, but onlookers and new photos say otherwise.

Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar: Separated

Elizabeth Hurley’s marriage to Arun Nayar is likely over. The British model and actress and designer Tweeted Sunday, amid reports of her cheating on Nayar: “Not a great day. For the record, my husband Arun and I have separated as of few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware.” Hurley’s announcement coincided with a scandalous report in Britain’s News of the World claiming her alleged affair with cricket player Shane Warne. She and Nayar, an Indian businessman and textile heir, began dating in 2003 and got married in March 2007 at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, UK. They exchanged vows in an Anglican ceremony before 300 guests. Days after the ceremony they threw a sumptuous week-long celebration in India. Hurley has an 8-year-old son, Damian, with her ex Stephen Bing. She previously dated actor Hugh Grant for 13 years before splitting up in 2000.
