For the first time, Simon Cowell has spoken out about Zayn Malik leaving One Direction . And, no, unlike some, the music icon did not compare Malik to a terrorist . At an event celebrating the ninth season of Britain’s Got Talent, however, Cowell did say Zayn is a “fantastic singer,” adding of the young star: “He’s got to get his head together a little bit. Should gays be able to donate gays ? FDA To Lift Ban On Gay Bloods Gay Donors Celibate For At Least One Year Via NY Times reports: The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that it would scrap a decades-old lifetime prohibition on blood donation by gay and bisexual men, a change that experts said was long overdue and could lift the annual blood supply by as much as 4 percent. The F.D.A. enacted the ban in 1983, early in the AIDS epidemic. At the time, little was known about the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes the disease, and there was no quick test to determine whether somebody had it. But science — and the understanding of H.I.V. in particular — has advanced in the intervening decades, and on Tuesday the F.D.A. acknowledged as much, lifting the lifetime ban but keeping in place a more modest block on donations by men who have had sex with other men in the last 12 months. In a statement, the agency said it had “carefully examined and considered the scientific evidence” before changing the policy. It said it intended to issue a draft guidance detailing the change in 2015. The shift puts the United States on par with European countries like Britain, which adjusted its lifetime ban in favor of a 12-month restriction in 2011. Men’s health advocates welcomed the move, saying that the ban was not based on the latest science and that it perpetuated stigma about gay men as a risk to the health of the nation. Legal experts said the change brings an important national health policy in line with other legal and political rights, such as permitting gay and people to marry and to serve openly in the military. “This is a major victory for gay civil rights,” said I. Glenn Cohen, a law professor at Harvard University who specializes in bioethics and health. “We’re leaving behind the old view that every gay man is a potential infection source.” He said, however, that the policy was “still not rational enough.” The shift will have far-reaching implications for the nation’s blood supply. The Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, has calculated that the change could add about 317,000 pints of blood to the nation’s supply annually, an increase of 2 percent to 4 percent. About 8.5 percent of American men — or about 10 million people — report having had sex at least once with a man since turning 18, according to the Institute. The new policy will exclude the 3.8 percent of American men who report having had a male sexual partner in the past year, a group that could double the potential new supply, the institute said in a report. Nigerian Military Knows Where Boko Haram Is Keeping Kidnapped School Girls In what should be a huge step to returning the 300 kidnapped girls to their families , the Nigerian military has announced that they know the location at which the kidnapped girls are being held. However, military forces are reluctant to burst into such a delicate situation for fear of harming the girls in the process. Via HuffPost : ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s military has located nearly 300 school girls abducted by Islamic extremists but fears using force to try to free them could get them killed, the country’s chief of defense said Monday. Air Marshal Alex Badeh told demonstrators supporting the much criticized military that Nigerian troops can save the girls. But he added, “we can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back.” He spoke to thousands of demonstrators who marched to Defense Ministry headquarters in Abuja, the capital. Many were brought in on buses, indicating it was an organized event. Asked by reporters where they had found the girls, Badeh refused to elaborate. “We want our girls back. I can tell you we can do it. Our military can do it. But where they are held, can we go with force?” he asked the crowd. People roared back, “No!” “If we go with force what will happen?” he asked. “They will die,” the demonstrators responded. But in a truly questionable turn of events, it seems that the girls could have been back home under negotiated terms about a week ago. However, the Nigerian president found some reason to leave them in captivity… That appeared to leave negotiation the sole option, but a human rights activist close to negotiators said a deal to swap the girls for detained Boko Haram members was agreed last week and then scuttled at the last minute by President Goodluck Jonathan. The activist who is close to those mediating between Boko Haram extremists and government officials said the girls would have been freed last week Monday. Jonathan had already told British officials that he would not consider an exchange. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. President Jonathan was forced this month to accept international help. American planes have been searching for the girls and Britain, France, Israel and other countries have sent experts in surveillance and hostage negotiation. Jonathan’s reluctance to accept offered help for weeks is seen as unwillingness to have outsiders looking in on what is considered a very corrupt force. What is really happening in Nigeria??? What secrets are so valuable that they’ll gamble on the lives of their own daughters to protect??? SMH. Hopefully with this military knowledge and foreign involvement, these girls can be returned home soon. But at this rate…who knows?
