By Christina Garibaldi MTV News’ Battle of the Boy Bands Photo: MTV News Given the undeniable popularity of British bands One Direction and the Wanted , it’s safe to say that boy bands are back, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! In celebration of their triumphant return, MTV News decided to pose the question: Who’s the greatest boy band of all time? Sounds impossible, right? Well, you, the fans, are going to help us answer that question as we officially kick off our Battle of the Boy Bands! Beginning on Monday, April 23, 32 groups — they span several decades and have all released music Stateside — will battle it out in our interactive bracket to determine the big winner. The first round of voting kicks off on Monday and ends on Thursday, April 26, when 32 bands will be narrowed down to 16. You can help your favorite band advance to the second round by voting as many times as you wish and by spreading the message on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB. But you won’t be the only ones fighting for your favorite band. The groups will be soliciting your votes with their own campaign videos urging fans to grant them the title of Greatest Boy Band of All Time. Released last fall after an 11-month sentence for violating probation on his 2009 gun conviction, the Atlanta rapper has been on such good behavior that a judge has approved an expanded out-of-state travel allowance for up to 12 days at a time. According to TMZ , the request, submitted by T.I.’s probation officer, details that the rapper has been a “model probationer” since he was released from an Atlanta halfway house last September. By following all guidelines and completing a required drug and alcohol counseling program, Tip has been granted more freedom to travel and do business in other states. The expanded freedoms come at a convenient time, as T.I. is nearing the release of his eighth full-length album, Trouble Man. “The album is about 75 percent done. We got a lot of hot, old-school, vintage T.I. records on there,” Tip told MTV News back in December while promoting his F— Da City Up mixtape. “We got those over-the-top crossover records as well, big features and whatnot that we plan on putting into play. I got one with Akon, did a few records with Rico Love. Man, I got records with just about everybody,” he said. “We just putting it together, we done did about 70 records.” Trouble Man will include features from T.I.’s ever-expanding Grand Hustle empire. In February, he made some new additions to his roster in the form of Australian rapper Iggy Azalea and British rapper Chip, plus a joint venture with Houston MC Trae Tha Truth and his ABN label. “We’re gonna work alongside each other for a common goal and release this Trae Tha Truth project,” T.I. said of the deal with Trae. “When cats [who are] cut from a certain cloth give their word and shake their hand, that’s what makes it a done deal — the ink is just a formality.” Related Artists T.I.

‘The Raven’ actress reveals to MTV News she spends ‘a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock.’ By Kara Warner Alice Eve Photo: MTV News Much like the lock and key that all “Star Trek” plot details were kept under during filming the first time around, the same goes for the untitled “Trek” sequel . We know which key players are back in place, alongside new additions Benedict Cumberbatch, as the unidentified villain , and actress Alice Eve, but we don’t know exactly how the sequel’s story will unfold. When MTV News caught up with Eve recently during the press day for her upcoming period thriller “The Raven,” we attempted to find out a few more details about what character she might be playing in asking how long she spends in the makeup chair each day before filming. “I’m a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock,” Eve revealed. “We were filming until very late last night, and I know that’s all I can say. It’s a top-secret operation; it’s like a war.” Although Eve is new to the “Trek” family, two of her co-stars are very familiar faces, Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg, with whom Eve worked on “Starter for 10” and “Big Nothing,” respectively. When asked how the reunion has been, Eve broke out into a wide grin, saying, “Both of them I’ve worked with before, and it’s a true, true pleasure to see them again. Really fun.” Eve went on to tease that her fans will be surprised by “a few things” about her performance in the film and re-emphasized the fact that she’s having a blast on set. “I’m having a lot of fun, and it’s a very special experience to be on J.J.’s [Abrams] movies,” she said. “He’s a real good leader.” The British beauty has equated the atmosphere on set with going to camp or school. “When there’s a group of people who you can spend time with and work with and get to know, a real good experience, it’s kind of like going back to university or something, when everyone has got the same objective,” Eve told MTV News . “There’s a lot of energy, and it’s a nice thing to be a part of that group. That’s the thing that excites me most about it. Rowling were treated to the title and release date of the “Harry Potter” author’s new novel, “The Casual Vacancy.” This week is sure to have fans buzzing again as it brings the news that she’s started working on a “Harry Potter” encyclopedia. Rowling answered a fan question regarding the highly anticipated Potter lexicon on the “frequently asked questions and rumours” page of her website. “For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry’s world, and I have started work on this now — some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity.” Back in 2008, Rowling and Warner Brothers won a lawsuit against Steve Vander Ark, the publisher of the Harry Potter Lexicon, who attempted to release a book along the same lines. Rowling also addressed the biggest burning fan question of all on her website: Will there ever be another “Harry Potter” novel? “I have always refused to say ‘never’ to this question,” the British author wrote, “because I think it would be foolish to rule out something I might want to do in a few years’ time. However, I have no immediate plans to write another Harry Potter novel, and I do think that I have rounded off Harry’s story in seven published books.” With the sheer volume of a project like the Harry Potter encyclopedia, it’s unlikely it will be available anytime soon. But Rowling’s first adult novel, “The Casual Vacancy,” is set to be released on September 27, 2012. The novel follows a quaint town in the wake of a death that leaves an empty seat on the parish council. Despite appearances, the town isn’t all it seems. Amidst their newest tracks — including “Morning Mr Magpie,” “Lotus Flower” and “Give Up the Ghost” — the British rock icons sprinkled tunes spanning much of their catalog, from Kid A rave-up “Idioteque” to In Rainbows’ “Bodysnatchers” and “15 Step.” Of “Karma Police,” their first classic selection of the night, singer Thom Yorke said, “You know those people who are only talking to you because they want something from you? You need to take a cold shower afterwards.” Radiohead, who last graced the polo fields in 2004, are also headlining Bonnaroo in June. The fivesome answered calls for an encore with longtime fan favorite “Lucky,” “Reckoner” and the alternately soaring and intense “Paranoid Android.” Coachella’s second day also featured Bon Iver, David Guetta, the Shins and A$AP Rocky. By Gil Kaufman One Direction Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images It could be weeks, or months, before we find out what will happen with the $1 million lawsuit against red-hot British boy band One Direction over their name. An unsigned American group who claims to have had the same name for several years has filed the suit seeking an injunction, so on Wednesday we set up the hashtag #New1DName and asked you to offer your suggestions for a new 1D moniker. In a statement obtained by MTV News, Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment responded to the suit, indicating that 1D fans have nothing to worry about. “There is a dispute with a local group in California about the ownership of the One Direction name in the US.,” read the statement. “One Direction’s management tried to resolve the situation amicably when the matter first came to light, but the Californian group has now filed a lawsuit claiming they own the name. One Direction’s lawyers now have no choice but to defend the lawsuit and the band’s right to use their name.” And while plenty of you took the same stance as 1D’s reps and said the band shouldn’t and wouldn’t budge, way more of you came up with some creative, silly and sometimes unprintable suggestions.
