Here’s cause for excitement for J.J. Abrams ’s Star Trek sequel , set to debut May 2013: British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to join returning cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Co. Better news: He’s reportedly playing the villain. If your first thought is “Benewhat Cumberwho?” see why you should take this as very good news after the jump. Thirty five year-old Cumberbatch has been active in theater, TV, and film for a decade, but had a banner last few years with roles in The Whistleblower , BBC’s Sherlock , and this awards season’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse . His acerbic take on Sherlock Holmes is probably his best known and best loved work of late, but his turn as Gary Oldman ’s skeptical but loyal right hand man in Tinker Tailor is another recent highlight; next year he’ll pull double duty in The Hobbit voicing the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer for Peter Jackson. (If you were lucky/smart enough to catch last year’s brilliant British satire Four Lions , you might recall Cumberbatch’s cameo as a frustrated negotiator trying in vain to break through to a bunch of inept terrorists.) There’s a somewhat delicate, dangerous edge to Cumberbatch that could play well against the all-American machismo of Pine’s Kirk in Star Trek 2 , though details on Cumberbatch’s character have yet to be revealed. And look! Tinker Tailor co-star Tom Hardy , another Brit breakout, had this to say of Cumberbatch’s acting prowess from back when they starred in the 2007 BBC biopic Stuart: A Life Backwards . So take it from fellow one-time Trek villain Hardy ( Star Trek Nemesis ) and the growing legion of stateside Cumberbatch fanatics: This casting sounds like a promising move on Abrams’ part. He became so upset by his discovery—even though the affair had happened way back in the 1940s!—that he immediately told Rosa he wanted a divorce. The break-up will no doubt be upsetting to the couples five children, 12 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, who must have come to take their elders’ marriage for granted since it’s lasted for the better part of eight decades! Antonio briefly moved to live with one of his sons, but he moved back in with Rosa a few weeks later. She has turned away from the fantasy world, replacing her pre-recorded videos of her with a blog about her journey to health. She already has lost about 85 pounds, and she hopes to join a gym soon to begin walking in a pool. She has modified her eating, as well. “I realized that I was their fantasy,” she said. “Here I was getting bigger and bigger, and they had their thin wives, with 2 1/2 kids and a picket fence.” Being that she is 600 lbs. Simpson doesn’t believe that she will ever be a Victoria’s Secret model, but she did go through some pretty dramatic model-esque lengths to lose weight… “I’m not trying to be a size 4,” she said. “I’m not trying to be a thin-mint. I just want to be normal and more active.” She has struggled to lose weight for years. She weighed about 200 pounds when she attended Springfield High School in Summit County. Simpson often ate an apple a day along with a weight-loss drink. Yes, Lady Gaga knows how to use shock value and outrageous antics to get attention, but she’s so much more than a flash in the pan. The 25-year-old is an artiste, a powerhouse performer and a pop cultural sensation, through and through. Can anyone really dispute that after the 2011 she’s had? With the release of her epic album Born This Way , and the premiere of its title track at the Grammy Awards, which featured her hatching from an egg on stage, Gaga put the planet on notice that she’s just getting started as her generation’s pop icon. Lady Gaga characterized BTW as “something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a fucking meat dress.” Fans and critics agreed she is taking music to the “next level.” An advocate for self-acceptance regardless of race or sexual orientation, her music is known for not only its catchy beats, but for its artistic and cultural references. Subsequent singles “Judas” and “The Edge of Glory” continued to push the envelope, receiving criticism for some concepts but acclaim for her overall delivery and range. Later in the year, “You and I” and “Marry the Night” gained recognition for their elaborate music videos, not to mention introspective looks inside the mind of Gaga. That alone is an impressive list, but it’s not even half the story with the girl born Stefani Germanotta who went on to become the hardest working woman in showbiz.
