Brittany Maynard Ends Own Life; Cancer Patient Was 29 Years Old

Brittany Maynard chose to end her own life today. The 29-year old has made headlines over the past few months for taking advantage of Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act, which allows one to take a fatal dose of barbiturates (prescribed by a doctor) in the case of a life-threatening disease. Maynard was told by physicians last spring that she had Stage 4 glioblastoma and would likely pass away within six months. Wrote Maynard in a Facebook post today before making her fatal decision: “Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me … but would have taken so much more. “The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type … Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!” On October 6, Maynard launched an online video campaign with Compassion & Choices, an end-of-life choice advocacy organization, to fight for expanding death with dignity laws around the country. Maynard spent the final months traveling to Alaska, British Colombia and Yellowstone National Park with her loved ones. “For me what matters most is the way I’m remembered by my family and my husband as a good woman who did my best to be a good wife and a good daughter,” Maynard told People last month, adding: “Beyond that, getting involved with this campaign, I hope to be making a difference here. If I’m leaving a legacy, it’s to change this health-care policy or be a part of this change of this health care policy so it becomes available to all Americans. British Woman Dies From Butt Augmentation Surgery Via DailyMail : The family of a British girl who died while having cut-price plastic surgery in Thailand have revealed that they didn’t know she had gone abroad. Joy Williams, 23, from Thamesmead, was described as a ‘caring and funny’ girl who was ‘loved by everybody. She died on October 23 after travelling to Bangkok to have £2,000 buttock augmentation surgery. Speaking yesterday from his home in Lagos, Nigeria, Miss Williams’s older brother Anietie, 28, said he had been looking forward to her visiting him in Nigeria this Christmas. He said: ‘We don’t really know what went wrong, we only know what is in reports in the media. Miss Williams, who was born in Lagos, settled in Thamesmead with her mother Christie in 2007 and had been to Thailand twice before choosing to visit for surgery. She initially visited the SP clinic, which she found on the internet, on October 14 to have the operation which she hoped would give her a bigger, fuller bottom. A few days later her wounds became infected and she returned to have corrective surgery to remove the silicon implants. But she was found dead on the operating table with a three inch-long stitched incision on her tail bone after medical staff found they were unable to resuscitate her. Thai officials investigating her death believe her operation had been delayed to ensure Miss Williams had not eaten anything beforehand and that as a result the operation began after the clinic’s legal closing time of 7pm. It is believed Miss Williams had long struggled with her self-esteem and been bullied at school before choosing to undergo an operation on her nose to improve her looks. While in Bangkok she had been staying at the £11-a-night Vabua Asotel hotel which is used by the clinic as accommodation for its patients. The doctor who carried out the procedure, Sompob Sansiri, 51, was later arrested and accused of negligence after it was found that he had been carrying out night-time surgery without a licence. He has now been charged with recklessness causing death and could face 10 years in jail if found guilty. We’ve said it time and time again…switching out that flatty for a fatty is NOT worth risking your life!

After nearly ten weeks of lying low due to health issues, Kate Middleton made her first public appearance since early August on Tuesday when she turned out to welcome the president of Singapore during his visit to London. Kate’s been suffering from severe morning sickness , as the result of a condition known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum. She’s had to cancel several appearances, but forced herself to rally on Tueday, reportedly because she was concerned about the opinions of the public and and the rest of the royal family. Now it seems that the effort may have backfired, as insiders say Queen Elizabeth II is fuming about a minor wardrobe malfunction on Kate’s part. That’s Kate awaiting President Tony Tan’s arrival at the London Royal Garden Hotel. Sources say she struggled to keep her dress down in high winds and the crowd occasionally caught glimpses of her thigh. Yes, that’s it. Nowhere near as bad as the Kate Middleton upskirt photos that wound up in a German tabloid and prompted comparisons between the Duchess and the Kardashians. Even so, British tabloids are reporting that an anonymous source claims both the Queen and Camilla Parker-Bowles spoke with Kate afterward about being more careful in her wardrobe selections. Of course, it’s entirely possible that the rumor is utter BS and no one in the royal family even noticed the minor Marilyn moment, but even so, Kate might want to start investing in some sporty pantsuits. Rosie O’Donnell Wonders: Might John Grisham Be Into Child Porn?

John Grisham chose a somewhat odd cause to get behind this week. In an interview with The Telegraph, the best-selling author brought up the topic of child pornography purveyors and said the following: “We have prisons now filled with guys my age… who’ve never harmed anybody, would never touch a child, but they got online one night, started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, pushed the wrong buttons, went too far, and got into child porn.” Rosie O’Donnell Slams John Grisham Amidst an understandable uproar once the remarks went viral, Grisham then issued an apology and an explanation. “Anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure, or who in any way participates in child pornography – online or otherwise – should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” Grisham said. He continued: “My comments made two days ago during an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children. I can think of nothing more despicable. I regret having made these comments, and apologize to all.” But Rosie O’Donnell wasn’t satisfied with this mea culpa during the opening segment of The View today. “I accept your apology but I don’t believe in your [expletive] bull crap thing that you said before,” O’Donnell said. “Nobody accidentally stumbles onto child pornography.” O’Donnell then alleged that Grisham must only know what he’s talking about from experience. “If I were the police, I’d look at John Grisham‘s hard drive right now,” she said. And, at that, co-panelist Whoopi Goldberg took the show to a commercial break. What do you think of Grisham’s original comments and O’Donnell’s response? Did she cross a line in practically calling John Grisham a child porn lover? Or did Grisham deserve it for having defended these purveyors in the first place?
