Britney Spears Experts Debate Final Four Videos

BreatheHeavy.com’s Jordan Miller puts his money on ‘Criminal’ as voting continues. By Christina Garibaldi Jason Trawick and Britney Spears in “Criminal” Photo: Jive It’s Final Four time in MTV News’ Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years . Hundreds of thousands of votes came in during round three — and that led to some shocking eliminations. Most notably, fan favorite “Toxic” lost out to “I’m a Slave 4 U,” which advanced to round two. “We thought that would be the biggest, tightest competition,” MTV Newsroom blog editor John Mitchell said of the contest between “Slave” and “Toxic.” “And it was the one that was separated by the most [votes].” The closest finish in the third round came down to this year’s “Till the World Ends” and “Lucky,” released in 2000. “Till the World Ends” held the lead for most of the voting, but a last-minute push by fans edged “Lucky” into the next round with a margin of just 128 votes. Now, it’s down to the Final Four. “Lucky” will take its chances against Spears’ latest video “Criminal,” which has a strong shot at the final round, according to BreatheHeavy.com’s Jordan Miller , who runs Britney’s biggest fan site. “I think ‘Criminal’ ‘s made it really far because it’s her latest music video that’s out,” Miller explained. “I think if that music video came out years ago, I don’t think it would be doing so well. It’s being promoted right now on TV and radio, but I think because it’s new to fans, it’s made it this far.” In the Final Four, “Slave 4 U” is facing off against “Hold It Against Me,” and MTV News experts predict “Slave” and “Criminal” will ultimately fight it out for the title of Best Britney Video of All Time. Spears herself recently weighed in on the competition with a tweet , hinting that boyfriend Jason Trawick was supporting “Criminal,” in which he co-stars with Brit. “It’s constantly been the most voted-upon bracket every single round,” MTV News’ Mitchell said of “Criminal.” “I think there’s a lot of groundswell behind that video; [Britney] obviously supports that video. I think that her fans are going to take it to the end.” Voting for the top four clips is open until 7 a.m. Thursday ; the top two will be unveiled at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, followed by the big reveal of the winner at 10 a.m. ET on Friday, which happens to be Britney’s 30th birthday. Britney Spears Fan Perez Hilton Roots For ‘I Wanna Go’

Blogger can’t believe ‘Criminal’ is pulling ahead of one of his faves in MTV News’ Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Britney Spears in her music video for “I Wanna Go” Photo: Jive The first round of the Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years is well under way, and we asked celebrity blogger and Britney mega-fan Perez Hilton to weigh in on some of the closest competitions in the tournament: “Sometimes” vs. “My Prerogative” While “Sometimes” — as one of Britney’s oldest videos — holds a special place in the hearts of her fans, Perez thinks “My Prerogative” has the advantage in this matchup. “In terms of video-making, spectacle, big grandiosity, ‘My Prerogative’ feels like a much larger to-do,” Perez said. “If I was to pick a winner between these two, I would go with ‘My Prerogative.’ ” “Lucky” vs. “Boys” “I am not a fan of the ‘Boys’ music video,” Perez admitted of the clip, featuring Pharrell Williams and Mike Myers as Austin Powers. “To me, the competition between that and ‘Lucky’ is easy. ‘Lucky’ all the way. “It’s such a classic Britney video,” Perez said about the clip, featuring Britney’s movie-star alter-ego (in the pre-“Crossroads” world). “She looks so beautiful in it! It’s from the golden era of Britney — those first few years where she was pretty much untouchable.” “I Wanna Go” vs. “Criminal” Perez echoed other Britney experts’ surprise that Britney’s latest video, “Criminal,” is significantly pulling ahead of “I Wanna Go.” “I think that ‘I Wanna Go’ is one of Britney’s all-time best videos,” Perez said. “She looked amazing in it, it’s fun, it feels different for her, and she had never done a video quite like that before.” As for “Criminal,” Perez shook his head. “I like the ‘Criminal’ video; I don’t love it. I was also distracted and slightly unhappy with the casting of her boyfriend [Jason Trawick] in it.” What’s your favorite Britney video? Sweet Dreams Are Made of Britney Spears

“Sweet Dreams” are made of Britney … or maybe nightmares? For her Circus tour in 2009, the star made a provocative music video for Marilyn Manson’s cover of the Eurythmics hit, but it was never released, until now. Mouthing words to one of Manson’s signature songs while parading around in what looks like an S&M-style orgy of sorts, this is Spears as you’ve never seen her. This is dark stuff … possibly NSFW. But if you’re into this sort of thing – a scantily-clad Britney grinding on people and objects – you’ll likely enjoy it. Britney Spears – Sweet Dreams (Interlude)

Britney Spears Boyfriend’s ‘Criminal’ Role ‘A Challenge’

Chris Marrs Piliero opens up to MTV News about working with non-actor Jason Trawick in new video. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Jason Trawick and Britney Spears in “Criminal” Photo: Jive Britney Spears certainly had everyone talking when she dropped her steamy “Criminal” video . Sure, fans were talking about the sex and gunplay, but they were also going bananas over the appearance of Brit’s real-life boyfriend, Jason Trawick, who plays her criminally handsome beau in the clip. The idea to include Trawick in the video was all Britney’s, but director Chris Marrs Piliero wasn’t sure he was so into it. “When she first hit me up, she had a basic story in mind, and she actually always originally planned to have Jason, her boyfriend, play the role, and I wasn’t super stoked on that idea at first, actually,” he told MTV News. Most of his reservations were because Trawick isn’t a professional actor and he wasn’t sure his rookie acting skills would translate well in the mini-movie. “I wanted to make a really rad, epic video, and I definitely got the sense from her she wanted something really cool,” he explained. “And in my mind, I was just thinking then, ‘We really should not be using your boyfriend; we should get an actor.’ So, I mean, I didn’t say that, but in the back of my mind, I’m like, ‘I don’t like this idea at all.’ ” Trawick and his abs, however, managed to impress Piliero — and Britney loyalists everywhere. “At the end of the day, Jason killed it. That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, ‘Wow, he’s not an actor. This is going to be interesting,’ but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I’m a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, ‘I’m gonna make sure that you are awesome,’ and he was.” Piliero also worked with Spears on her video for “I Wanna Go,” and he was once again dazzled by her sassy acting skills. “Of course, Britney was rad,” he said. “She does a good job at nailing and doing the little acting thing. She’s cool at it.” What did you think of the “Criminal” video? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears

Jay-Z, Kanye West Sued Over Watch The Throne Sample

Soul legend Syl Johnson claims duo used 1967 hit without permission. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Jay-Z and Kanye West have been sued by soul/blues icon Syl Johnson over allegations that they sampled one of his songs on their Watch the Throne album without permission. The complaint, filed in Illinois federal court Friday, alleges that the dynamic duo sampled a portion of his 1967 hit “Different Strokes” on the Throne deluxe-edition song “The Joy,” according to the Hollywood Reporter . Johnson claims the song was sampled without his permission and has was not credited in the album’s liner notes. The allegation of copyright infringement was first raised in late August, when archival record label and publisher the Numero Uno Group — which was erroneously credited as the song’s publisher in the Throne — threatened a lawsuit on Johnson’s behalf. The suit further claims West originally attempted to sample the tune on his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy solo album, but was unable to get clearance in time to use it. Given that history, the suit alleges West’s decision to use the sample on another album without permission is an example of “knowing” and “willful” misappropriation. The funky blues song has long been a favorite among rappers, including the Wu-Tang Clan (“Shame on a N—a”), Public Enemy (“Fight the Power”), the Beastie Boys (“Desperado”), the Geto Boys (“Homie Don’t Play That”) and Kool G Rap (“Talk Like Sex”) — and Johnson has not shied away from suing other hip-hop acts in the past to get paid for the use of his music. The suit seeks to impound all the copies of Throne and requests a full accounting of sale and publishing money, along with punitive damages. A spokesperson for the Throne could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z

Britney Spears, Boyfriend Get Steamy In ‘Criminal’ Video

Brit’s real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick stars in Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip. By Jocelyn Vena Jason Trawick and Britney Spears in the “Criminal” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears ‘ posh but incredibly mean English boyfriend asks his lovely girlfriend, “Why don’t we see that pretty little face of yours?” at the beginning of the “Criminal” video . That remark sets off a chain of events that will certainly leave Britney fans watching the Chris Marrs Piliero-directed ( “I Wanna Go” ) video on repeat. As Britney and her abusive beau make their way out of the party, him yelling at her for standing up for herself as he flirted with other girls, they come across Britney’s real-life boyfriend, Jason Trawick, who is playing one really hot bad guy with a heart of gold. The boyfriend slaps Britney, and Jason comes to her rescue, setting into motion their very hot — and very naked — love affair. He takes her back to his place, where a headline reveals he’s — you guessed it: a criminal. But, Britney doesn’t seem to mind. She kisses him. He kisses her. They get it on, showing lots of skin and giving fans a sneak peek into their personal life. They then head to a convenience store, where Britney decides to break loose and hold the place up, guns blazing. After the stickup, the pair steal a car and head back to Jason’s loft for a very revealing shower scene that includes lingering shots on their wet, naked bodies. As they wrap up the steamy shower session, the authorities close in on them, blasting bullets into the apartment. But, Britney and Jason just continue to share passionate kisses as bullets soar around them John Woo-style. Just when you think it’s the end for pop’s reigning Bonnie and Clyde, the police enter the apartment to see that the duo has escaped, unhurt, driving away on Jason’s motorcycle. As the credits roll, everyone’s left wondering what they will do next. Shot in London in September, “Criminal” is the fourth single and video from Femme Fatale .
