Britney Spears, Madonna Get In The Zone For 2003 ‘Me Against The Music’ Video

In anticipation of the premiere of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, we look back at her epic Madonna collabo. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Me Against The Music” Photo: Jive Records In 2003, Britney Spears and Madonna decided to get their dance on together for Spears’ lead single off In The Zone . It was a collaboration that came together after the pair locked lips at the VMAs that same year. “I was in the middle of rehearsals for the VMAs and I played her the song, and she was like, ‘That’s your first single, right?’ ” Britney recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, hopefully.’ She was like, ‘I really like it.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ I was like, ‘Well, you wanna do it with me?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ ” From there the idea was born and director Paul Hunter was tapped to try to capture the magic that had everyone buzzing after that now-famous kiss. “Madonna is an icon of an earlier generation, and then Britney of the newer generation … She was at her peak at that point,” Hunter told MTV News in 2009 about the video. “So it was a challenge to kind of bring both of the worlds together. I wanted it to be a bit of a cat-and-mouse sort of game, and a little bit of a foreplay between Britney and Madonna, and just sort of tease the audience.” When Spears spoke about the video while on-set, she explained that the intention was always to tease the audience. “I never actually see Madonna or touch her; I just feel her presence there,” she said. “[The song is] basically about just going to a club and letting yourself go and battling with whoever is around you and battling against the music as well. This is my first time doing a collaboration, and it’s with Miss Madonna herself.” Hunter admitted that it was all about keeping it sexy, without actually going there. “I try to play opposites, when you have Britney in dark and Madonna in white,” he said. “And then we see them kind of dance around the bed … and you think they’re gonna get on top of each other and do something crazy.” Don’t miss Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” video premiere Thursday, February 17, at 9:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com, followed by a live discussion on MTV.com at 11 p.m. about the new clip and what’s next for the pop star! Britney Spears Made A Name For Herself With ‘… Baby One More Time’ Video

In anticipation of the premiere of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, we look back at her iconic 1998 clip. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Baby One More Time” Photo: Jive Records It’s hard to believe that in 1998 a schoolgirl uniform caused so much trouble, but that’s just what happened when a pouty Britney Spears donned the now infamous costume in her video for “… Baby One More Time.” Well, it seems Britney had some idea that the costume idea would make the video memorable. “My idea originally was just jeans and T-shirts, and we were at the wardrobe fitting and Britney holds up the jeans and T-shirts and says, ‘Wouldn’t I wear a schoolgirl outfit?’ ” the video’s director, Nigel Dick, told MTV News in 2009 . “Every piece of wardrobe in the video came from Kmart, and I was told at the time not one piece of clothing in the video cost more than $17. On that level, it’s real. That probably, in retrospect, is a part of its charm.” In 2000, Spears spoke to MTV News about baring her belly in the clip, noting that it felt like the most natural thing in the world to do. “Me showing my belly? I’m from the South: You’re stupid if you don’t wear a sports bra [when you] go to dance class, you’re going to be sweating your butt off,” she explained. “It was such a wonderful experience. All these people there, working for you. I had my own trailer. It was an amazing experience.” Spears was then an unknown pop singer and Dick had already established himself as a music video guru. The decision to work with Spears left many perplexed. “My response was, ‘It’s a great song. I don’t know anything about Britney. I never watched ‘The Mickey Mouse Club.’ She seems like a great kid and she’s very enthusiastic,’ ” he said. “But I just love the song. It’s just a great song. “I decided to try this idea that someone had thrown at me and they hated it — they absolutely hated it,” Dick said about the video’s simple setup. “So I jumped on the phone with Britney and she says, ‘Well, now I think it should be about me in school and there should be lots of hot boys around,’ and that was pretty much it — oh, and a bunch of dancing. And my response was, ‘OK.’ ” In a 1998 interview with MTV, Spears revealed that she wanted the video to reflect the lives of her fans, so she wanted to set it in a school. “The first idea we had for the video was so off the wall,” she said. “I was like, ‘I want something a lot of kids can relate to.’ It’s just a fun video.” That same year she noted that as soon as she heard the song, she knew she had to record it. “It’s a song every girl can relate to,” she said. The song was recently featured in the “Britney/Brittany” episode of the hit show “Glee,” with Lea Michele playing the Britney schoolgirl role. Before Britney Spears debuts her music video for “Hold It Against Me” on February 17 on MTV, MTV News is taking a look back at some of the singer’s most memorable videos. The new much-anticipated clip will air on MTV and MTV.com Thursday at 9:56 p.m./ET, right before a new episode of “Jersey Shore.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears

Britney Spears: A Bridesmaid For Brett Miller

In a welcome distraction from the thought of Kacey Jordan babysitting her kids , Britney Spears was a bridesmaid in her friend’s wedding in Miami. She and boyfriend Jason Trawick flew in Thursday to partake in the weekend wedding festivities of Brett Miller, who is the singer’s assistant. They bunked down in an oceanfront room at the Newport Beachside Hotel where members and friends of the wedding party were staying. ROUGH NIGHT : Fortunately, Britney Spears looked way better than this during Brett Miller’s wedding. You can follow this link for a photo of her bridesmaid dress . Later, Spears and Jason Trawick moved into the Frank Sinatra Suite at the Fontainebleau in Miami because the Newport’s “pool wasn’t private” enough. Soon enough, it was back to the wedding party. “At one point in the evening Jason took Britney’s hand and twirled her to Frank Sinatra,” a source said. “It was cute and romantic.” Miller’s wedding took place Saturday at Miami’s Spanish Monastery where she married her sweetheart, Frank Lionetti. Congratulations, Brett!

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Gets Remixed

DJs and producers have begun putting their spin on Spears’ banging single. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage It didn’t take long for the club scene to put their spin on Britney Spears’ single “Hold It Against Me.” In the weeks since the pop star released the hard-pounding dance cut, DJs and producers have begun work on making sure it bangs the club even harder. A few days ago, house legend Paul Oakenfold revealed on Twitter that he was putting together a “HIAM” remix, tweeting , “I’m in the studio working on Britney Spears remix its going well.” Oakenfold previously remixed Spears’ “Gimme More.” While fans have yet to hear how Oakenfold plays with “Hold It Against Me,” electropop act Robots With Rayguns already have released their own, space-aged rendition on the tune. Their version combines ’80s-inspired synths, robot noises and sparse beats, while keeping Spears’ vocals at the forefront of the track. It sounds like Kylie Minogue’s version of dance pop, playing up Spears’ sex-kitten image. DJ Mike Rizzo has offered up his own take on “Hold It Against Me,” subtitled “Funk Generation Club Mix,” and it goes dark where Robots With Rayguns went light. Playing up the song’s already-heavy electro and house groove, this remix sounds like it would be right at home at any given dance party, with its lopped vocals, sirens and thumping beat. The dance community has been vocal about their support of “Hold It Against Me.” “The more the stuff that is underground becomes mainstream, the more the underground is gonna change,” Skrillex told MTV News with regard to the Dr. Luke/ Max Martin-produced tune. “I think it’s gonna inspire people to obviously do something different. “I thought the track was great overall,” he added. “I’ll be honest, man: I love Max Martin. I think he’s an absolute genius. And Dr. Luke did it, right? I think they are a f—ing dream team. I love the track!” Meanwhile, super-producer David Guetta says he’s all for the track and Spears’ further journey down the dance rabbit hole. “My favorite part is that dub step break. I think that’s really cool,” he explained to MTV News. “It’s like the beat is really simple and you’re like, ‘OK,’ and then there’s this huge chorus it’s like, ‘OK,’ but then when they come with that dub step break … It gives a totally different approach to the record. I love this. It’s surprising. It’s a big record.” What do you think of Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” and the remix tracks that you’ve heard? Share your opinion in the comments. What Will Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video Look Like?

‘Fans are really, really looking forward to her busting out moves,’ one Spears expert tells MTV News. By Nuzhat Naoreen, with additional reporting by Kimberly Reynolds Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage The first time Kayla Brackson got a glimpse of Britney Spears’ “I’m a Slave 4 U” video, she knew she had to learn the dance. So Kayla, who was only in middle school at the time and not allowed to watch anything Britney-related, grabbed her Walkman, snuck out to the tree house in her backyard and secretly practiced the steps over and over again. “It just made me want to move. It was exciting,” said Brackson, who is now 21. “It felt rebellious to do the dance because it was Britney.” “I’m a Slave 4 U” was just one of Spears’ many iconic videos that resonated with fans and dance enthusiasts alike. Now, in anticipation of the upcoming video for her chart-topping single “Hold It Against Me,” experts and fans are looking back at the dance videos that impacted them most and what they’re expecting from her latest clip. “She’s such a phenomenal performer,” said Robert Baker, owner and director of Millennium Dance Complex in North Hollywood, California, where Britney learned much of the choreography for many of her early videos. “She kind of draws you into her world, and that’s what a great dancer does. They have a unique ability to speak through movement.” Baker listed “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Circus” and “Toxic” as some of Britney’s most powerful dance videos, but said it was ” … Baby One More Time” that really set off a phenomenon. “I think across the country and across the world, the same thing happened — this huge run to ‘let’s go learn that dance,’ ” he said, adding that his academy received a flood of requests after the premiere of the video from people wanting to pick up the routine. Baker said Britney has been able to adapt to the times, and he has high expectations for the “Hold It Against Me” video, which is being choreographed by Brian Friedman . “What I’m hearing, one of the early things is that this new video is going to be phenomenal.” Aaron Mix, who runs the @britneysarmy Twitter account, got hooked on Britney after watching her ” … Baby One More Time” clip when he was 5 years old, and he’s already planning to learn the dance moves for “Hold It Against Me.” “I think this one’s going to be her biggest video yet,” he predicted. Jordan Miller, who runs the Britney fan site BreatheHeavy.com , said he hopes the upcoming video will go back to Britney’s dance-heavy roots. “Fans are really, really looking forward to her busting out moves,” Miller said, naming “Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix)” as one of his favorite Britney dance videos. Miller, who started his site six years ago, said Britney’s choreography is what sets her apart from other pop stars. “People aren’t looking at what she’s wearing or the aesthetics of it; they’re looking at her moves,” he said. “She’s so solid that anything she does is going to be imitated or mimicked.” JaQuel Knight, one of the choreographers for Britney’s 2009 Circus Tour, as well as Beyonc
