The Oscars Could Really Use Another Streaker

In the grand tradition of the late, great Robert Opel : “It’s long been rumored that Opel’s streak across the screen was not necessarily a unilateral act of transgression by Opel, and that he may have had a co-conspirator or two. The facts that he gained access to the backstage area in order to stage the streaking, and that he was given a post-show press conference, give rise to the suspicion that the event was set-up by the producers of the broadcast, maybe to give the long-venerated institution a little jolt.” [ The Awl ]

Grammys Behind The Scenes: What You Didn’t See

MTV News had a prime spot on the red carpet and inside Staples Center — here’s what you missed if you were watching on TV. By MTV News staff Paul McCartney and Lady Gaga backstage at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: WireImage MTV News spent hours interviewing artists and stars on the Grammy red carpet . After everyone was inside Los Angeles’ Staples Center, some of the news team made their way backstage while the rest made their way to their seats. Here are some observations that anyone watching from their couch would never have seen: Pretty Please, More Pink : Inside Staples Center, they play highlights from past shows during commercial breaks. Pink’s performance of “Glitter in the Air” captivated the audience so much that when they cut back to the show, the entire crowd groaned. Mother Monster’s Security Detail : Lady Gaga moved through the arena flanked by two bodyguards in order to make it safely to her seat in time for Recording Industry President Neil Portnoy’s speech. Gaga was also safer than the Beatle in the house. Sir Paul McCartney had no protection during his dual-performance night. Get Up, Stand Up : The audience inside Staples Center seemed unsure of when to stand up and sit down all night. The minute Paul McCartney appeared onstage, all that uncertainty disappeared. One Step Behind? : While Chris Brown’s footwork looked quite impressive on air, our source told us the vibe inside Staples was lukewarm after his physical performance. Join the Band : Many audience members were given arm bands with a Coldplay logo on it and told to put them on during the band’s performance with Rihanna. The Standing O You Missed : When Tony Bennett won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group for his duet with Amy Winehouse during the pre-televised ceremony, the crowd rose to its feet. “We shouldn’t be here. Our darling daughter should be here,” Winehouse’s father Mitch said after embracing Bennett. On the Bubble : The night’s big winner, Adele, was chewing gum backstage after her triumphant performance of “Rolling in the Deep.” That applause you heard on TV was no joke. The crowd inside Staples was blown away. What was your favorite show moment? Tell us on Facebook! Grammy Night Belongs To Adele, Foo Fighters

The night’s most-nominated artist, Kanye West, takes home four awards. By Gil Kaufman Adele accepts the award for Best Pop Solo at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The 54th annual Grammys were supposed to be all about the expected sweep by a titanic soul diva with pain in her heart and a voice for the ages. And while it was most certainly a good night for six-time winner Adele , the death of R&B superstar Whitney Houston on Saturday at the age of 48 cast an unmistakable shadow on the night’s events. “There is no way around this, we’ve had a death in our family,” host LL Cool J said at the top of the show, asking for a prayer in honor of Houston . “Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us … and although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit.” With that, though, the rapper said it was time to celebrate music. Adele got the night started early with a win before the show for Best Pop Vocal Album, then quickly got in the game on the broadcast with a Best Pop Solo Performance win for “Someone Like You.” Dressed in a glittering black dress, the long-muted diva broke her silence by saying, “My life changed when I wrote this song,” then thanking her doctors for the vocal cord surgery that saved her golden instrument. Her “Rolling in the Deep” also won for Best Short Form Video. Adele’s seat didn’t get cold, as she was back up for Song of the Year for “Rolling.” She took the stage with co-writer Paul Epworth, whom she called the best producer in the world. “He brought me out of my skin to write this record,” said Adele, still chomping on gum, likely to keep her throat loose. On her way to a sweep, she also won Record of the Year for “Deep,” saying, “This is ridiculous!” and thanking radio programmers for helping make her song a major smash. In one of the most anticipated performances of the night, Adele tried to show she was (almost) all the way back by singing the intro to “Deep” a cappella in a voice as strong and resonant as we all remembered. Seemingly pushing the needle to red, she held nothing back, swooping down and rising to the peak of her abilities to offer proof, as if it were needed, that she deserved everything that came her way Sunday night. The topper was the Album of the Year honor for 21, the multiplatinum disc that made Adele a global superstar. “Thank you so much, thank you,” the weeping, ecstatic singer said, holding up the trophy and telling her absent mom, “Mum, girl did good! … This record is inspired by something that is really normal when everyone’s been through it, just a rubbish relationship … it’s been the most life-changing year.” The night’s biggest nominee, Kanye West , was a no-show at the event but took four hip-hop honors, snatching Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration for “All of the Lights” from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and sharing Best Rap Performance with Jay-Z for “Otis.” Though he missed out on the Best New Artist award, Skrillex scooped up a trio of pre-tel gramophones , including Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. The Foo Fighters were rewarded early as well, nabbing four Grammys, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for “White Limo,” Best Rock Song for “Walk,” Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth.” They also got some main-stage action with a Best Rock Performance win for “Walk.” Singer Dave Grohl said it was a great honor to win for a record tracked in his garage on analog tape. “It shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. … It’s not about being perfect … it’s not about what goes on in a computer.” In addition to a standout performance, Chris Brown celebrated a major win when he snagged Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. “We got one,” Brown said, thanking the Grammys for inviting him back to the show three years after a Grammy-eve assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna sent him into exile. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon scored the biggest shocker of the night, besting Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Skrillex and the Band Perry for Best New Artist. “It’s really hard to accept this award,” Vernon, who had already taken Best Alternative Music Album for his self-titled second release, said about besting the wealth of talent in the room. “When I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I’m a little bit uncomfortable up here. But with that discomfort, I do have a sense of gratitude.” Taylor Swift is used to winning, and Sunday night was no different, as the revenge track “Mean” from Speak Now took Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song hours before she played a Depression-era themed version of the song. On a night when attention was turned to a treasure lost, another recently passed soul diva, Amy Winehouse , won a posthumous Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul.” Jennifer Hudson paid dramatic tribute to Houston late in the show, singing a soul-stirring, gospel-tinged version of Whitney’s showstopper “I Will Always Love You,” accompanied only by piano, ending with the shout-out, “Whitney we love, we love you.” It was just one of the many standout performances during the broadcast, kicking off with rock legend Bruce Springsteen , backed by the E Street Band and a full orchestra for his new recession anthem “We Take Care of Our Own.” Bruno Mars pulled out his gold lam

Katy Perry Flies High At First Post-Divorce Show

Newly single pop star soars above the crowd in Indonesia during California Dreams Tour stop. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry performs in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday Photo: Splash News Katy Perry re-emerged Thursday (January 19) for her first concert since announcing her split with husband of one year, Russell Brand . The concert, which took place at the Sentul International Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia, was the first of the two final shows on her California Dreams Tour. In video from the gig, Perry removed the wedding footage she typically showed during her performance of the Teenage Dream track “Not Like the Movies,” during which she sits on a swing while singing the dreamy ballad. For the revamped performance , the singer instead showed vintage-looking cartoons of animals as a placeholder, while swinging around in a red-and-white, candy-cane-striped gown. Check out photos of Katy’s spectacular concert looks. While she had been sporting short, blue hair as of late, for the show, she was wearing her signature black hair with Bettie Page bangs. Two days prior to hitting the stage, Perry shared her excitement for the show on Twitter , writing, “I’m SO EXCITED to FINALLY be in INDONESIA! U guys have waited forever #timetodeliver.” Hours before she took the stage, she had one more message for her fans when she tweeted, “It’s the day of the show y’all! Can’t WAIT! #JAKARTADREAMS.” The performance comes one week after she was snapped on the set of an Adidas commercial donning bright-blue hair and some threads designed by Jeremy Scott for the athletic brand. She has another show Monday in Manila, Philippines. She is also up for two awards at the Grammys , set to take place February 12. At last year’s show, the singer made a grand romantic gesture when she debuted footage from her Indian wedding to Brand during the broadcast. It was the first time anyone had seen any video from their nuptials. Did you catch Katy’s California Dreams Tour? Share your reviews in the comments! Kathy Griffin Strips to Her Underwear in Times Square [Video]

New Year’s Eve telecasts were chock full of entertaining performances, from Justin Bieber to Selena Gomez . But Kathy Griffin has stolen many of the headlines from these performers, not by belting out any notes… but by undoing her belt, along with other items of clothing. Indeed, the comedian co-hosted CNN’s Time Square coverage alongside Anderson Cooper and shed most of her layers while the camera was capturing the crystal ball, confetti and thousands of revelers. When it returned, viewers were treated to the following awkward sight: Kathy Griffin in Her Underwear “Are you freaking kidding me?” Cooper asked, trying to stifle the sort of laughter that engulfed him a few weeks ago on live TV. “I have a no-apology policy,” Griffin told CBS news hours after the broadcast. “No apologies for jokes. I apologize in my real life all the time. I say ridiculous things, I make mistakes constantly… But when I’m on stage, I’m at a microphone… it’s a joke!”

The X Factor Double Elimination: Who Went Home?

The X Factor tried to shake things up this week by sending TWO contestants home – but the only real surprise was that the show featured Howie Mandel in the audience. Isn’t he a NBC guy? Indeed, the two performances given the boot were the most obvious selections of the remaining nine, one a group, the other an over-30 hopeful. So long, Lakoda Rayne and LeRoy Bell. You had a decent run. Rayne was sent packing early on in the broadcast – which also featured performances by Kelly Clarkson and Bruno Mars – as that group received the lowest number of votes following last night’s performance show. Paula Abdul now has no more proteges remaining. Bell, meanwhile, was in the bottom two alongside Marcus Canty . The judges tried to instill some tension in the second elimination, deadlocking their votes and leaving the singers’ fate up to the audience. Steve Jones promptly read Bell’s name off a card and the elder crooner took his ousting like a man. You tell us: Did the right contestants get sent home?

‘X Factor’ Exclusive: Simon Cowell ‘Felt Sorry’ For Astro

‘It had to be said because I think everyone at home was thinking that,’ Cowell tells MTV News of his harsh critique. By James Dinh, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Simon Cowell Photo: Ray Mickshaw/ FOX Simon Cowell has never been one to bite his tongue. However, it appears as if the British music mogul has had a change of heart about some harsh words he dished to 15-year-old contestant Astro on last week’s “X Factor” elimination episode. The finalist had offered the audience a rather bitter response to his bottom-two placement by refusing to sing for his life. MTV News’ own Jim Cantiello sat down with Cowell recently and chatted about the much-talked-about results show, which sent 42-year old songstress Stacy Francis packing and saved the teen rapper. “I gotta say, on the night, I was really annoyed, and not for anything else other than for him,” the judge said. “And then I watched it back that night, and then I felt sorry for him.” While Cowell admitted that he felt “a bit” bad that he came down so hard on the pint-size MC after the broadcast, he explained that it was necessary because “everyone at home was thinking that.” “I think if I had been light on him, I think it would have been worse for him because I think it made him aware of how he was coming across,” he continued. And as viewers saw, Simon was anything but light on the contestant during the elimination round. After Astro announced that he didn’t want to perform before the judges’ make-or-break decision, Cowell responded by saying, “Look at me, and think about your mum watching the show. Because you are showing disrespect to your mom. You are showing disrespect to the audience at home, and I don’t like people with this attitude.” Astro appeared to be in better spirits the following day when he took to Twitter , writing, “Good morning #teamASTRO I had a ‘fight the system’ moment last night. Sorry if I disappointed you guys. I WILL make you all proud next week!” Do you think Simon was too harsh on Astro last week? Let us know in the comments.
