Film director and New York City native Spike Lee went off on an expletive-filled rant against gentrification in the nation’s biggest metro area this week. Lee grew up in the Ft. Greene, Brooklyn, where his parents still live. In response to a question at an African American History Month lecture Tuesday at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, the 56-year-old film great said: “Why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers into the South Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Brown Heights, for the facilities to get better?” Explaining this quote, he told Anderson Cooper, “My problem is, when you move into a neighborhood, have some respect for the history, for the culture.” To stay a great city, Lee said NYC needs more affordable housing. He also offered these choice, NSFW quotes on the subject … “The garbage wasn’t picked up every (expletive) day when I was living in 165 Washington Park.” “Have you seen Fort Greene Park in the morning? It’s like the (expletive) Westminster Dog Show.” “Then comes the (expletive) Christopher Columbus Syndrome. You can’t discover this. We been here. You just can’t come and bogart.” (Renters) can’t even afford (expletive) (expletive) Williamsburg now because of (expletive) hipsters.” In a response to the controversial, racially charged remarks, Joshua Greenman, who is white and lives in Brooklyn, called Spike Lee’s rant “ignorant.” “The phenomenon he decries is mostly innocuous, inevitable and, in a diverse and economically dynamic city, healthy,” Greenman writes in the N.Y. Daily News. Greenman pointed to studies that demonstrate how gentrification is actually good for long-time residents because businesses and services improve. Like Lee, though, he pointed to the need for affordable housing.

This doesn’t make any sense . Rabbi And Others Arrested For Plotting To Kidnap And Torture Men Whatever happened to going through the process of divorce? Sure, it can take a long time when the other party won’t consent, but it’s better than kidnapping and torturing people. According to The NY Daily News A Brooklyn rabbi and three others were busted by the FBI for plotting to kidnap Jewish husbands then torture and zap them into giving their wives a divorce, authorities charged Thursday. Rabbi Mendel Epstein, 68, would charge desperate wives up to $100,000 to “convince” their hubbies to consent to a divorce, or “get” in Jewish law, sources and court papers said. “We prefer not to leave a mark,” the racketeering rabbi allegedly said in a recorded conversation with an undercover agent in which he described his method. “We take an electric cattle prod. …You put it in certain parts of his body, and in one minute the guy will know.” Epstein — who was arrested Wednesday night along with Rabbi Martin Wolmark, 55, Ariel Potash, 40, and a muscle man only known as “Yaakov” — was recorded saying they pull the kidnapping plot every year to a year and a half, court papers show. All four are set to appear Thursday afternoon in a federal court in Trenton. Epstein’s Kensington home was raided Wednesday night together with other locations in Rockland County and New Jersey, sources said. Epstein is also a known lawyer and advocate for women’s right to divorce who has said in prior interviews that he has handled some 2,000 divorce cases. Around the time the federal investigation started in August, he released a four-point “Bill of Rights of a Jewish Wife.” Damn shame. Authorities say the rabbi was approached this summer by an undercover federal agent posing as an Orthodox woman asking for help in getting a divorce. She was told it would cost $10,000 for the rabbinical court to approve the forced “get” plus another $60,000 to pay for the “tough guys,” according to the criminal complaint. Epstein assured her that if victims go to the police, cops typically say, “’Uh, is there some crazy Jewish affair here.’ They don’t get involved.” He said his son and other toughs use “karate skills on the victims to facilitate the divorces,” as well as handcuffs and placing of plastic bags over the husbands’ heads, court documents said. Last week, a Beit Din, or rabbinical court, in Monsey, Rockland County, authorized the use of violence, and Epstein was told the husband would be lured to a warehouse in New Jersey this week. He then allegedly scoped out the location with Yaakov. Wolmark is accused of presiding over the Beit Din proceedings, signing off on the violent ploy after the undercover explained why she needed the divorce. Potash was to act as her agent to receive the “get” from the purported husband. At the end of the hearing, Epstein instructed the woman that during the kidnapping, “You should be out in public, among a lot of people,” the court papers said. SMH. Shutterstock

This is so sad. Brooklyn Mom And Baby Found Dead In Apartment Prayers go out to their family. According to The NY Daily News A 19-year-old Brooklyn man wondering why his twin nieces hadn’t gone to school went to his sister’s apartment Thursday and found her dead body lying atop her newborn son, officials and family members said. Family members believe Marjorie Lyons, 34, may have died from complications stemming from her recent C-section, but police could not confirm the report Thursday. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday. Jerome Guthrie, who lives downstairs from Lyons, said his twin nieces woke him up shortly before 10 a.m. to tell him they were hungry. He went to his sister’s apartment to ask why the girls weren’t in school and found her corpse sprawled out on the bed. Her 11-day-old son Preston was lying underneath her, he said. “Under her I saw a leg, a baby leg,” he said Thursday. “I reached out and pulled him out. He was purple all over. I screamed, ‘Please don’t be dead, please don’t be dead!’ I ran out and found an officer. I couldn’t say nothing. I was crying, crying, crying just ‘Follow me, follow me, follow me.’” Lyons died at the scene, officials said. Preston died at Brookdale Hospital. Lyons’ mother, Rosemarie Garrison, said she spoke with her daughter on Wednesday night and Lyons complained of having a fever. Her father said she was taking Oxycodone for the pain from the C-section. Neighbors were stunned by the tragedy. Police say they saw no initial signs of trauma on the bodies of Marjorie Lyons and her newborn, Preston Alexander. “She was a good girl. She was respectful,” said neighbor Donna Peters. “All you could say about her is that she was a good girl. A good mother.” This is so sad. R.I.P. to mother and child. Instagram

That baby had his whole life ahead of him. So sad. Mom Kills Son In Attempted Murder-Suicide If she wanted to murder herself then fine, but to take an innocent little baby’s life is just selfish. According to The NY Daily News The mother of a baby boy who was found dead inside the family’s Brooklyn home wrote a ghastly suicide note but did not attempt to take her own life, a police source said Monday. “Justin is dead and so am I,” the mom wrote before cops arrived at the Ocean Ave. building where she and little 19-month-old Justin Stephens lived. Anna Thomas, who was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter Monday, allegedly only finished half of her plan. Justin was dead, but the 20-year-old mother wasn’t. Cops went to the home after getting a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed person at a window around 8 p.m. Sunday. A knife was found at the scene, but neither Thomas or her little boy were stabbed or slashed, police sources said. Police believe the baby may have been suffocated, according to sources. Cassandre Celus, 18, who lives on the building’s second floor said her younger cousin spotted Thomas at the window — where she was dangling 19-month-old Justin. “My little cousin saw her dangling the baby,” said Celus, a student studying French at St. John’s. She said she could hear Thomas shouting for help. “She said ‘Call 911, my baby my baby,’” said Celus. “I thought the baby was falling and she was trying to catch it,” the young student said. “She was screaming.” Celus’ brother called 911 and an ambulance soon arrived. SMH. The baby looked to be in grave condition when it was wheeled out, Celus said. Neighbors said the young mother worked in health care. The building super, Burim Havolli, 29, said Thomas moved in about two years ago with her aunt, whose name is on the lease. “She was the best of the best (tenant),” said Havolli. “I never had a problem with her.” “She was always friendly. ‘Hi, how are you doing.’ I’d go pick up the rent, she would give me a drink,” he said. Another neighbor, who only identified himself as Michael, said he believes the child may have had a developmental disability. “A single mother and a special needs child? I’m surprised you don’t see this kind of thing more often,” Michael said. One fifth floor neighbor who declined to give her name said she saw Thomas, the child and a man she thought to be the child’s father smiling together over the weekend. “She seemed so happy, I just saw them Sunday. She was with her baby daddy,” the neighbor said. “(Justin) looked just like the mom. He was a cutie pie. You could definitely tell that he was special needs,” the neighbor added.
