Robert Redford to Star in Biopic About the MLB Exec Who Signed Jackie Robinson

Robert Redford’s reemergence in film will involve the very sport he highlighted in The Natural , which is a welcome surprise, wouldn’t you say? The 74-year-old Sundance king says he will play Branch Rickey , the executive who signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945, in an as-yet-untitled film written and directed by Brian Helgeland ( L.A. Confidential , Mystic River ). But does Redford’s first quote about the project shed a dubious light on his reasons for joining?

Big Sean Says Lil’ Kim Should ‘Hop On A Track With Another Big’

‘She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up,’ MC says during ‘RapFix Live’ after seeing Kim’s kind words about him. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Big Sean on “RapFix Live” Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Kanye West isn’t Big Sean’s only notable co-signer. During Lil’ Kim’s recent appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” one of the up-and-coming MCs she said had plenty of potential was the G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam artist. “There’s a new rapper. I don’t know if he’s a rock star yet, I don’t know if he’s really gotten that chance, but his name is Big Sean,” Kim told MTV News. “I like him. I think he’s dope.” It was Sean’s turn on Wednesday’s (March 23) “RapFix Live.” During his sit-down interview, the flashy Detroit rapper was humbled after seeing the video of the Queen Bee speaking highly of his talents. “That’s crazy, man,” Sean told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “That’s a legend right there. She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up. Somebody told me that she said that, but that’s my first time actually hearing her really say that. It’s an honor. That just really goes to show me I’m just doing something right, through all the hate. Through all the people telling me, ‘Man, you’ll never do whatever, whatever, man,’ stuff like that keeps me going.” With props from Lil’ Kim, Sean said he intends to inquire about a possible collaboration with the Brooklyn rapper. “Lil’ Kim’s a real G, man,” Sean said. “She need to come holla at me. Hop on a track with another Big. … I need her phone number to hit her up.” For now, Big Sean’s debut album, Finally Famous, is due in stores May 3. Would you like to hear a Sean and Kim collabo? Sleigh Bells On MTV’s Musical March Madness: ‘Expect The Unexpected’

Tournament tips off Monday, and the Brooklyn duo like their chances. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss Photo: Michael Burnell/Redferns Much like the actual March Madness tournament, MTV’s second annual Musical March Madness brackets are filled with upstart bands looking to shock the world. Everywhere you looked this year, there were unknown acts making big moves — everyone from Mumford & Sons and Florence and the Machine to the Black Keys and Cage the Elephant — but perhaps no band went from obscurity to the big time quite like Sleigh Bells. The Brooklyn duo broke out with their squalling, squelching debut Treats. So it should probably come as no surprise that, as we gear up for the tipoff of the 2011 MMM on Monday, the Bells are making preparations for a deep run in the tournament. And, in keeping with the spirit of dark-horse contenders like the Butler Bulldogs (who came within a desperation 3-point heave of upsetting Duke in the 2010 NCAA finals), they’re entering firmly as underdogs — which suits them just fine. “We are definitely an underdog,” singer Alexis Krauss laughed. “I don’t know … it’s a bit overwhelming. But I’m appealing to you as the underdog to try and go out at least fighting a good fight.” And, really, that battling spirit is perhaps Sleigh Bells’ best shot at making their way to the MMM championship. They already know they’ll face tough challenges from established acts like Linkin Park and Panic! at the Disco and up-and-comers like Adele , and if they survive that, they might just run into defending champs Coheed and Cambria in the finals. But as Krauss put it, underdog or not, her band possesses a trait that none of the other MMM bands have: Namely, a lot of weapons. And genuine psychosis. “Have you seen our videos? In my first video, I was walking around wielding a baseball bat. In my second video, I was pushing [guitarist/producer] Derek [Miller]out of a car, and he was covered in blood. So clearly we have some tricks up our sleeves,” she explained. “Derek, he knows his basketball, he knows his stuff. We already have jerseys made; we’re ready to go. So, I don’t know, expect the unexpected. And we may not just use basketballs, we may use baseball bats and switchblades. Who knows? We’re psychos.” MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011

‘American Idol’ Elimination Episode Crushes TV Competition

‘Idol’ puts up biggest non-sports Thursday ratings numbers since 2007. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler holds up his swear sign on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Simon who? Perhaps putting to rest any fears that “American Idol” would nosedive without iconic judge Simon Cowell, Thursday night’s first elimination episode of season 10 put up some stellar numbers for the singing competition. On a night when most of the competition on rival networks consisted of reruns (including, count ’em, six episodes in a row of “The Office” on NBC!) after the vaults were emptied last month during sweeps, “Idol” raked in 25 million viewers to win the ratings crown. In fact, the impressive numbers for “Idol” gave Fox the most-watched non-sports Thursday night number of any network over the past four years. The two-hour extravaganza, which not only shaped the top 10 , but also featured six performances by singers vying to score three wild card spots — not to mention the debut of judge Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” music video — was a 29 percent increase of last season’s first elimination night, according to Billboard With an 8.1 rating in the 18 to 49 demo, numbers were also up 13 percent over last Thursday’s “AI” episode. As you might expect, ratings climbed during the pivotal final half-hour of the broadcast, going from 25.96 million between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 26.66 million for the final half-hour. The good ratings news bodes well for the start of live competition next week, when new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will have to finally show their stuff during two real-time broadcasts a week after charming viewers during the season’s pre-taped episodes. Lil’ Kim Says She Was ‘Greeted With Open Arms’ In Prison

‘I met a lot of good people in there who are still my friends to this day,’ she tells ‘RapFix Live,’ also recalling a package from Oprah Winfrey. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim on RapFix Live Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News When Lil’ Kim spent almost a year in a federal prison , she managed to create some fond memories behind bars. During MTV’s “RapFix Live,” the Brooklyn rapper detailed some of her experiences while serving time for a perjury conviction. “When I first got to prison, I slept so good for the first three weeks,” Kim told MTV News. “I was working that whole two months before, nonstop, trying to finish an album, doing promo, doing the TV show [BET’s ‘Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown’ ], doing shows, doing all types of things. So I never slept, never [rested] at all for two months straight. … When I got there, I kind of just collapsed.”
