Peter Steele, Type O Negative Singer, Dead At 48

Singer reportedly died of heart failure, according to manager. By Gil Kaufman Type O Negative’s Peter Steele Photo: Paul Bergen/ Redferns Peter Steele of heavy metal band Type O Negative has died of heart failure at age 48. Steele (born Petrus Ratajczyk), the burly 6’7″ bassist and lead vocalist of the Brooklyn goth-metal band, formed Type O in the early ’90s after stints in several other groups, including the hardcore act Carnivore. A spokesperson for Type O bandmates Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly confirmed the sad news to MTV News. And according to CBS News , band manager Mike Renault sent an e-mail saying, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.” The band’s most recent label, SPV/Steamhammer Records, reportedly issued an online statement about Steele’s passing. “It’s with great sadness that we give our condolences to the family and friends of Peter Steele,” it read. “He died on April 14th, 2010. With his bands Carnivore and Type O Negative he achieved cult status and was loved by fans around the world. … The world has lost a charismatic frontman and a very talented person. Our condolences go to Peter’s family, friends and the members of his bands.” Fuse metal hostess Mistress Juliya (Juliya Chernetsky) tweeted about the news on Wednesday. “Today is a very sad day in metal … end of an era … Peter Steele passed today,” she wrote. “I loved my friend … our idol … my heart is with his band and family.” Blabbermouth.com , a site run by the band’s former label , Roadrunner Records, also reported that Type O keyboardist Josh Silver had confirmed that Steele died on Wednesday. A rumor circulated that Steele had died in 2005, but that turned out to be a publicity stunt to promote their new record, making it difficult to assess the validity of this latest report. The earlier rumor sprung from an image of a tombstone with his name and the dates 1962-2005 that was briefly posted on the band’s Web site but then removed. Steele reportedly suffered from clinical depression, reflected in the band’s doom-laden lyrics, dark image and an often morbid sense of humor. Type O released seven studio albums, with their most recent being 2007’s Dead Again. Related Artists Type O Negative

I Ate The Double Down

I tried my best to capture the experience in video, since words fail when it comes to KFC's newest sandwich . I hope this will keep you from eating it — consider it a PSA. Also, it cost $5.98 (including tax) when I bought mine in Brooklyn, and took forever to make, I guess because of the bacon. Or because to person who made it had to overcome so much revulsion. Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Could Begin Filming Next Year

‘Twilight’ author’s first adult novel is well on its way to the big screen. By Christoper Campbell Stephanie Meyer Photo: MTV News With the film installments of her “Twilight” novels not yet fully completed, Stephenie Meyer is already well into the development of her next film franchise. According to Deadline.com , the adaptation of the author’s first adult novel, “The Host,” could go before cameras as early as next year. Published in 2008, the book involves benevolent yet parasitic aliens who have taken over the minds of almost all the humans on Earth. Upon its release, Meyer described the plot to MTV News as ” ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ if the aliens had won.” Although financing is not yet in place and no definite shooting schedule is planned for the sci-fi/horror hybrid, producer Steve Schwartz divulged that “Truman Show” Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol is currently working on his third draft of the screenplay, with the author’s close involvement. Niccol is also signed on to direct the film. Schwartz, who is now budgeting the project with co-producers Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler, again noted that Meyer handpicked the filmmaker because Niccol’s directorial debut, “Gattaca,” is one of her favorite science-fiction films. However, his hire was not immediate. “We spent time with Andrew,” Schwartz explained. “Listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right.” Fans will have to wait and see if Meyer is also right about her dream cast for the film, which she told MTV News in 2008 includes Robert Redford, Matt Damon and both Ben and Casey Affleck. Another uncertainty is when — or if — Meyer will ever finish her two planned sequels to “The Host.” Regardless of whether or not the adaptation spawns further novels or movies, a 2011 shoot could put “The Host” in theaters before the “Twilight Saga” ends, depending on when the second part to the two-film adaptation of “Breaking Dawn” is released. Plus, with Meyer’s announcement of the “Eclipse” spin-off novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” there’s now a tease that Summit Entertainment could extend the hot vampire film series even further than a fifth installment. Would you go see the film version of “The Host” in theaters? Let us know in the comments! For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Matt And Kim Call Erykah Badu’s Nude ‘Window Seat’ Video ‘More Than Just Shock Value’

Badu credits duo at beginning of her clip, and talked with them before filming. By James Montgomery Erykah Badu in her “Window Seat” video Photo: Universal/ Motown The first thing that flashes across the screen in Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video isn’t a bit of exposed flesh or some wondrously weird background character — it’s a message that reads “Inspired by Matt and Kim.” Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot It’s a nod, of course, to the Brooklyn duo’s clothing-optional “Lessons Learned” video ,which saw them dash naked through Times Square and earned them a host of accolades, including the award for Video of the Year at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards . Badu’s “Window Seat” clip is sort of like its spiritual cousin, something she acknowledges right off the bat. But it didn’t start there. Before Badu even filmed her video, she reached out to Matt and Kim to discuss her plans for the project — and get their blessing — as Matt Johnson explained to MTV News late Tuesday night. “She’s an artist that I respect and like, and before she made the video I got a call from her and we talked about it for a little bit,” Johnson said. “We talked about the bigger picture she saw … and

The Night Brooklyn Took Manhattan [Invasions]

They came on foot, by bicycle and skateboard. They filled the Soho streets like a dirty flood. Traffic was blocked and the Fire Department was called. It was an art opening for pictures of naked people and everyone was there. This event comes at sort of an awkward time for us, taxonomically speaking. If we were still allowed to use the word “hipster” we would definitely classify Ryan McGinley as a “hipster photographer.” He is maybe best known for setting up road trips of attractive people and photographing them frolicking in natural settings, naked and generally having a rad time. (He did this for Wrangler once .) He can be thought of as a less creepy Terry Richardson . For this is he is rich and famous. Tonight, the Team Gallery hosted an opening party for Ryan McGinley’s new show. For a night, a street in Manhattan was Brooklynized. What transpired can only be conveyed in slide-show form. Here is the invite for the Ryan McGinley show, “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.” Notice the ironic (MAYBE?) tattoos and jewelery. Notice how the boy is skinny and naked. Obviously, if you see this in the window of a coffee shop on Bedford you go to where it tells you to go. [ via ] Even before the opening, this Twitter user was nervous. Nervous, likely, because it was unseasonably warm and she had not yet had the right side of her head shaved for spring. Too late, the art opening was about to begin! [ iamamayzing ] Outside the gallery. For the Brooklynite fretting about the rare trip into the hustle-and-bustle of Manhattan, sweet relief: People milling about! Other people pushing bicycles around! A person pointing a very nice video camera at nothing in particular! Let’s get this street party started. [ ArtObservered ] Then this happened. 1) Guy in the headdress. 2) Lower right corner: Alright, who brought their parents!? [ MikeNouveau ] Welcome to Brooklyn. [ RatherBeBiking ] Brooklyn ruled the street, but inside, Manhattan partied. Here is a picture of McGinley taken from the twitter account of New York’s most famous mail-order bride , Lera Loeb. [ LeraLoeb ] FREE BEER. (And art.) [ MJFIII ] We know it was a good party because it got busted. “Dude, the gallery opening totally got shut down by the fire department!” Everyone went to the after-gallery opening across the street. [ MikeNouveau ] Fuck it: They were hipsters.
