This sounds like a case of “when trying to off yourself goes wrong”: A despondent West Side man took a leap out of his ninth-floor window this afternoon — but was saved when he landed onto a huge pile of garbage that’s been collecting since New York’s devastating post-Christmas blizzard, officials said. Vangelis “Angelo” Icapatos, 26, apparently attempted his death leap at 12:04 p.m. from a building on W. 45th St. between 8th and 9th avenues, police said. Icapatos landed on his back and was taken to Bellevue Hospital. A worker at the building said Icapatos is a resident at the building on the ninth floor. “I can’t believe the garbage broke his fall,” said an astounded neighbor, Ingrid Suprock, 26, who lives next door. “I guess the trash saved the guy.” For the first time in a torturous week, what has been going all wrong, finally went right. Collecting trash has been piling up around the city — as sanitation workers try to catch up with snow removal that has bogged down the city since the day after Christmas. But with Mother Nature helping to melt the 20 inches that got dumped in the devastating blizzard, the city has been turning its attention to the gathering garbage — untouched since the storm. “It’s been out here all week,” Suprock said of the trash out in front of the victim’s building, and others along the block. The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Golden State Warriors 117-89 last night. Not exactly a surprising result, considering the talent gap between these two teams. But Gabriel Aubry and Kim Kardashian made sure fans were taken aback by at least one development: these two sat courtside at the game, embracing the camera at every opportunity, as evidenced below: Look, there’s one guy in this building I haven’t dated! Aubry split from Halle Berry in April, following four years of dating. He and the actress are the parents of a daughter, Nahla, and have remained friendly since the break-up. Called the “HemPod,” this one-storey building has highly insulating walls made from the chopped woody core, or shiv, of the industrial hemp plant mixed with a specially developed lime-based binder. The hemp shiv traps air in the walls, and the hemp itself is porous, making the walls incredibly well insulated. The lime-based binder sticks together and protects the hemp and makes the building material highly fire resistant. The industrial hemp plant takes in carbon dioxide as it grows, and the lime render absorbs even more of the climate change gas, effectively giving the building an extremely low carbon footprint. “The walls are breathable and act as a sort of passive air-conditioning system, meaning that the internal humidity is kept constant and the quality of the air within the house is very good.
