Peak Oil Alarm Raised By Secret Government Talks

Image credit: AZrainman Could government finally be waking up to the threat of peak oil? When a government minister attended a peak oil conference as a “keynote listener” , I perhaps unkindly cited it as evidence that miracles do happen. But despite warnings of peak oil in 5 years from Richard Branson , there’s no doubt that governments the world over have not so far devoted too much attention to peak … Read the full story on TreeHugger

More Pumped Hydro Storage Could Help Wind & Solar Power

Photo: PG&E Currently the Largest-Scale Form of Grid Storage Available Last week, California’s PG&E filed a request with regulators to study the feasibility of building a new “pumped hydro storage” facility in the Mokelumne River watershed in Amador County. It would store energy by pumping water from a low reservoir to another one that is at a higher elevation. This is done when there’s a surplus of energy, such as when the wind is blowing hard at night, for example. Then when you need the energy, you open up the valves and let the water run through turbines like any other hydro station…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

CDM Moves Against Chinese Polluters, Carbon Credit Prices Rise

The CDM can fund clean energy projects like concentrated solar farms (photo via flickr) It’s called the law of supply and demand. Know it? Decrease supply, and demand will increase. The dynamic is even better when the supply decreased is carbon credits for polluters. The UN backed Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has suspended carbon credits for shady chemical manufacturers in China that were producing an excess of pollution and then destroying it, all to get cr… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Trashy TV Takes On a Whole New Meaning

Reality shows have taken over television, like a virus or a breath of fresh air, depending on your perspective. And we’re about to add to that mix with Garbage Moguls . But first, I’d like to pay homage to Planet Green . Love it or lump it, it has done more, earlier than any other media outlet to bring green thinking, living and acting to the masses. Rather than consign green minded TV to the dusty DVD collections of hippies low budget environmentalist sk… Read the full story on TreeHugger

What’s The Latest With FutureGen, The CCS Project In The Corn?

photo via flickr The story of FutureGen, the first of its kind carbon capture and storage project, has more ups and downs than an episode of “Gossip Girl.” The project was first conceived and financed under the Bush Administration, but they dropped it before leaving office , citing costs. But the Obama Administration revived the project, promising that the test project would be the first of many CCS projects, giving coal and oil power plants a new lease on life. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Who Has Open Fires When It’s 100 Degrees Outside? Olive Garden

Image credit: Olive Garden & Peter Baker (Creative Commons) When I wrote about drying clothes indoors , I was surprised to hear that some folks had considered opening the windows and cranking up the heat on the thermostat as a “green” method of clothes drying – even when you wouldn’t otherwise need to heat your house. But they’re not the only ones doing weird things out of season—tipster Ty tells us that his local… Read the full story on TreeHugger

There’s A Lot Less Coal Out There Than We Think – But That’s Not Civilization’s End

photo: Jennifer Woodard Maderazo via flickr TreeHugger has covered the uncomfortable and largely under-publicized topic of peak coal on a number of occasions, but David Roberts over at Grist just brought it up again–and it’s a topic certainly worth revisiting as the future implications are great. I’ll take the question out of R… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Feelgoodz Flip-Flops An Unwitting Casualty of Gulf Oil Spill

While not exactly on the same scale as fishing and tourism taking a huge hit from the Gulf oil spill, Change.org highlights an unwitting and unexpected casualty of it all: Feelgoodz flip-flops. The ethically-sourced, all natural rubber, footwear start-up is sitting on thousands of unsold shoes and may be unable to repay a $50,000 loan that got them started. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
