Introducing Skrillex: Deadmau5’s ‘Little Goblin’

Mau5trap signee has produced remixes for Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. By Adam Stewart Skrillex Photo: MTV News If you’re a big EDM fan and you haven’t yet heard of Skrillex, you may want to listen up. The LA native has rapidly taken the electronica world by storm, earning praise from peers and fans alike. “He’s taking over,” Deadmau5 told MTV News in a recent interview. “I think he’s going to outdo me. I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” While he didn’t quite capture all 10 spots, Skrillex did, at one point, own an impressive eight of the 10 — no small feat for a guy who until 2007 was more commonly known as Sonny Moore, frontman of post-hardcore/emo band From First to Last. “Throughout my years in From First to Last, I was always dabbling and making electronic music on my own time,” he told MTV News. “The first records I ever owned were crossover electronic rock, like Prodigy, Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. A lifelong fan of electronic music, his style slowly morphed into a dubstep-progressively-housey-hardcore hybrid that many, including the man himself, find difficult to actually peg. “I kind of want to do whatever I want to do and what I’m feeling,” he said. “I never set out to be part of a genre, because I listen to all types of music.” Before joining the Mau5trap label, Moore had been signed to both Atlantic and Interscope records to produce a variety of dance remixes for some of the biggest names in the business, including Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Since then, under the Skrillex moniker, he has released two EPs in less than 6 months. The first, “My Name is Skrillex,” was released in June as a free seven-track download. A short time later, the “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” EP was released, and it dominated the charts. Skril has even begun production on a music video for the title track, which he said will be centered around “3-D and CGI battles between ‘Scary Monsters’ and ‘Nice Sprites’ ” — something that in his post-hardcore days, may have been only a dream. “I want to continue to constantly put out great music, expand further and further with the live show and music that is attracting music fans from all over the place, not only for ravers or electronic heads,” he said. Much like Deadmau5, Skril has used technology, embracing it in his live sets. Along with a stunning visual display, he keeps distance from the traditional dual-CDJ setup, leaning toward his Ableton and M-Audio Trigger Finger array, which allows him to mix and transition seamlessly through wildly different styles of music. “I’m going from a 175-bpm drum and bass track to a 128-bpm electro track within a song from each other, and that’s really versatile for what I’m doing,” he explained. “I want to challenge myself more with the live show, not only in terms of great production but actually contributing to what the word ‘live’ means.” How would you describe Skrillex’s sound? DJ Drama, Don Cannon Publicly End Beef For Mixtape

Former Aphilliates tell Mixtape Daily about burying the hatchet for Young Chris’ The Re-Introduction . By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes and James “FLX” Smith DJ Drama and Don Cannon Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Re-Introduction Headliner : Young Chris Co-Headliners : DJ Drama and Don Cannon Essential Info : Business partners fight, but brothers unite. That’s the case between DJ Drama and Don Cannon. The two unceremoniously parted ways a few years ago and went their separate ways, signaling the end to the Aphilliates crew that dominated the mixtape game with their jointly hosted “Gangsta Grillz” project. Drama continued to do his thing with the “GG” brand, helming projects by Gucci Mane, among others. And Cannon made a name for himself on the underground scene, championing acts such as The Cool Kids. The two friends buried the hatchet recently and rejoined forces on fellow Philly native Young Chris’ The Re-Introduction mixtape. “Dram called my phone and was like, ‘Let’s go sit down,’ ” Cannon told MTV News. “We sit down, and before you even know it, we didn’t even have to explain it to each other. We were like, ‘Let’s get it together. You got your thing going on. I got my thing going on.’ “You know when you get into an argument, and you got to explain what’s going on? We past that. We’re here. The reintroduction. We’re here for Chris, Philly, and this is a good platform for people to see what people can do when they come together and knock things out.” Although the two Clark University grads publicly reunited for Young Chris’ mixtape, the pair said they were back on good terms long before the project. “I remember last year when the situation happened on the radio with Jeezy and Gucci [squashing their beef],” Drama said. “And a lot of people were hitting my Twitter and said, ‘Now that they’ve resolved their issue, when will we see you and Cannon together? That’s what we really wanna see.’ ” Other Notables

Worst New Home Market Ever; AP’s Crutsinger Downplays, Lowers the Recovery Bar

There are many annoying aspects of the sea change in media coverage of the economy since Barack Obama became president. At or near the top of the list is how the business press has downplayed the unprecedented housing industry disaster, while lowering the bar that will supposedly represent a real recovery to ridiculous levels. According the the Census Bureau ( 12-page PDF ), 23,000 new homes were sold nationwide in October. That figure ties August 2010 and December 1966 (when the population was 35% smaller) for is the lowest single month since records have been kept. More extensive evidence of how bad things are will come after the jump. On Wednesday , the Associated Press's Martin Crutsinger provided as good an example as any of the press template for housing coverage — acknowledge that, yes, things are really bad; give readers an absurdly low benchmark for what would represent real improvement and how long it should take to get there; locate some “expert” to say it's really not all that bad; and find some kind of anecdote somewhere, anywhere, that will leave the impression that things might somehow be getting better: read more

Taio Cruz Wants To Work With Kings Of Leon

Collabo king tells MTV News he was starstruck when Kylie Minogue recorded at his house for ‘Higher.’ By Gil Kaufman Taio Cruz Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic It’s already been a pretty spectacular year for Taio Cruz . He scored a breakthrough U.S. hit with “Break Your Heart” (featuring Ludacris), hooked up with Ke$ha for “Dirty Picture” and then set up shop near the top of the charts most of the summer into the fall with the unstoppable single “Dynamite.” Along the way, he’s recorded another upcoming single with Travie McCoy, “Higher” (which will feature Kylie Minogue in the U.K.), and he helped present an award alongside Nicki Minaj at Sunday night’s American Music Awards , where he came in with modest expectations for a win . Always thinking about his next move, Cruz is on the hunt for new collaborators, and on the AMA red carpet , he spilled some details on what he looks for in a musical match. “Someone who’s going to make an impact, something the fans are going to find a fun collaboration, something interesting,” he told MTV News. Despite his eclectic slate of collaborators, Cruz said he doesn’t feel like he needs to be a chameleon to shape himself to the singers he works with. “I think you just have to be nice,” he smiled. “People respond pretty well to nice. And musically it helps that I’m a producer and I can figure out ways of moving songs around.” Though he’s a veteran producer, Cruz admitted to getting a bit starstruck when Minogue came to his home studio to lay down some vocals. “I was just like, ‘Wow, Kylie Minogue is in my house.’ … It was very surreal.” Keen to keep his finger on the pulse, Cruz has also been hunkering down with Swedish House Mafia on some new tracks. “They’re so much fun,” he said of the crew. His ultimate dream musical match is one that might surprise you, though. “I would say I would have to call Kings of Leon,” he said of the arena-rocking Southern family band. “Because they’re incredible.” Who would you like to see Taio Cruz hook up with next? Chloe Moretz Is Thankful For ‘Kick-Ass,’ Hit-Girl Groupies And Brad Pitt

And we’re thankful for her, one of our favorite actors of 2010. By Josh Horowitz Chloe Moretz Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic At the beginning of this year, MTV News tagged Chloe Moretz , a little-known young actor whose largest role at that point was in “(500) Days of Summer,” as one of the actors in our “10 to Watch in 2010” series. She didn’t disappoint. The 13-year-old blew audiences away as the sword-wielding, bullet-taking badass Hit-Girl in “Kick-Ass.” She followed up that comic book adaptation with an intense and mature performance in “Let Me In,” in which she played a troubled vampire yearning for a human connection. It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve now named Moretz as one of the folks we’re most thankful for in 2010. MTV News recently sat down for a chat with the teen star, who talked about meeting overly enthusiastic fans, how her family has helped her career and one unforgettable encounter with Brad Pitt. MTV : You were one of our stars to watch in 2010, and now Thanksgiving time is rolling around very soon. Every year we select the actors we’re most thankful for, and you’re one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. Chloe Moretz : Really? Wowers! Yayers! Yay-zies? MTV : Does it feel like it’s been a big year for you? Moretz : It’s been huge. “Kick-Ass” and then [“Let Me In”] — it’s been absolutely insane. MTV : What’s been the highlight? Moretz : “Kick-Ass,” how big it got. The sheer thought of how much work I put into it and it finally getting so huge. That was insane. I was flabbergasted. MTV : Were there any moments at red carpets or premieres where you thought, “Wow, this is crazy”? Moretz : A guy at the London premiere, he had a Hit-Girl costume on — a pink wig and everything. That struck home. That leaves a memory. He was chic. MTV : Have you run into some fans of yours, or fellow actors, who have come to you and said how impressed they are by your work? Moretz : Brad Pitt at the afterparty, he was like, “I really like the role of Hit-Girl.” And I was like, “What’d Angie think?” No, it was amazing. It was really cool to see someone who is so big and is such a phenomenal actor to recognize my work. MTV : Who or what are you most thankful for in 2010? Moretz : My family, of course. Without my family, where would I be? That my mom said yes when I was 6 begging her to let me semi-start the business. Where would I be without my brother Trevor? He’s my acting coach. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Check out everything we’ve got on “Kick-Ass” and “Let Me In.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

A full 50% of the incoming Congressmen have made public comments asserting that global warming is not caused by man — if it’s even happening at all. This one comes from Cambridge, Ontario, and is about Paul Rak, the owner of VeriForm, a manufacturing company with about 60 employees. This made him more aware of the environmental footprint of his business, and he decided to do something about it; after making a few simple and relatively inexpensive changes, Mr. Rak reduced VeriForm’s energy consumption dramatically, made his products more efficient and competi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

DHS Source: TSA Infuriated With Coverage Of Nationwide Backlash

No Grope, No Fly: TSA Refuses To Back Down: But lawmakers and local authorities prepare to take on feds. A Department of Homeland Security source has told CNN that the TSA is infuriated with the attention the media has given to the nationwide backlash against naked body scanners and aggressive new airport pat down procedures. During an appearance on CNN’s Anderson Cooper, TSA chief John Pistole attempted to downplay CNN’s Homeland Security source who told them that the TSA was “angry” with the media’s coverage of the issue and also fuming at the portrayal of the “don’t touch my junk” guy as a “folk hero”. Pistole also ludicrously claimed that TSA workers were “professionals in terms of how they carry out their business,” despite a deluge of stories about TSA officials abusing, sexually assaulting and humiliating travelers, including a case currently the subject of a lawsuit where TSA goons pulled down a 21-year-old woman’s blouse before laughing and joking about her exposed breasts. Pistole also parroted Janet Napolitano’s discredited claim that Johns Hopkins University declared the naked radiation scanners to be safe, despite the fact that just three days ago Dr Michael Love, who runs an X-ray lab at the department of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at the Johns Hopkins school of medicine told AFP that “statistically someone is going to get skin cancer from these X-rays”. As we documented, Big Sis’ USA Today editorial was a tissue of lies from start to finish. Pistole also lies to Cooper when he claims that people who clear the traditional metal detector are not being subjected to invasive pat downs, in an effort to dismiss the fact that people who refuse the scanner are being punitively punished for their disobedience. As we documented with the case of radio host Owen JJ Stone, who had a TSA agent put his hand inside his pants and touch his backside and genitalia, Stone cleared the metal detector without a problem but was still made to endure a humiliating pat down that amounted to sexual molestation. Pistole points to the example of underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as the reason why Americans need to submit to “groin checks” and have their testicles squeezed by goons in uniforms. However, it was the US State Department that allowed Abdulmutallab to board Delta Flight 253 despite the fact that his father warned the US State Department about him a month before, he was on a terror watchlist and was aided through security by a sharp-dressed Indian man. Pistole has indicated that the agency will not back down on radiation body scanners or invasive pat downs despite nationwide outrage and a plethora of lawsuits amidst new cases of travelers being sexually molested and humiliated by TSA goons. “Pistole told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs that his inspectors at 453 of the nation’s airports are not going to back down in the face of complaints that techniques are invasive,” reports the Washington Post. Pistole said that agency wanted to “strike a balance between privacy and security needs,” and yet the TSA isn’t interested in striking any kind of balance whatsoever. Groping 3-year-old children, pregnant women and the physically disabled does not represent the “risk-based” or “professional” approach that Pistole and Napolitano claim they are enforcing. Amidst the backlash, many are calling for the TSA to be abolished and the current security-theatre to be replaced with something more effective, safer, and more respectful of privacy rights. As Isaac Yeffet, the former head of security for El Al, told CNN, real terrorists are a giveaway for people professionally trained to spot them. Using human intelligence and rationally-based profiling is a far more successful and Constitutional method of providing airport security. Using minimum-wage low grade morons to feel up toddlers and pregnant women is not. Pistole, Napolitano and the TSA are praying that the resistance withers away, but it is only growing stronger, especially now that local governments are warning TSA workers that they will be prosecuted for groping travelers and with state lawmakers in different areas of the country moving to terminate use of the body scanners entirely. http://www.prisonplanet.com/dhs-source-tsa-infuriated-with-coverage-of-nationwid… added by: im1mjrpain

WaPo Says ‘GOP to Jobless: Drop Dead’

People who would try to deny The Washington Post is a liberal newspaper should look no further than the star columnist of the Business section, Steven Pearlstein, and his Wednesday column, headlined “GOP to jobless: Drop dead.” A reader who thinks this will be a plea for further extensions of unemployment benefits would be wrong. Pearlstein's attacking Republicans for criticizing the Federal Reserve's “stimulus” attempts and for — fact checkers, please? — “more tax cuts for the rich,” a curious description of leaving the present tax rates where they are. This is nothing new, this bomb-throwing from a Post business editor. After all, this is the same columnist who blasted Republicans last year as “political terrorists” who are “poisoning the political well” by peddling “lies” about liberal health care plans, lies that are “so misleading, so disingenuous, that they could only spring from a cynical effort to gain partisan political advantage.” When you disagree with him, you're a “terrorist,” and now you want the jobless to “drop dead.” It sounds like Jon Stewart may want to make a “Rally for Sanity” phone call. On Wednesday, Pearlstein really unleashed on “radical” conservatives like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh in his focus on the Fed: read more
