Rick Sanchez: CNN is ‘Middle’; Fox News ‘Way, Way, Way to the Right’

On Wednesday’s Rick’s List, CNN’s Rick Sanchez returned to his obsession with Fox News , stating that the network ” obviously tends to lean way, way, way to the right .” He did acknowledge this his competitors at MSNBC ” tends to sway to the left ,” but went on to extend his ” I play it down the middle ” label of himself to his entire liberal network: ” We happen to be in the middle, and that’s the way we do things ” . The anchor, who denied that he had any ideological leanings less than a month ago , brought on correspondent Jessica Yellin 17 minutes into the 4 pm Eastern hour to report on the political donations of News Corporation, which own their competitor, Fox News. Yellin reported that News Corp. “has given a million to the Republican Governors Association.” Sanchez replied that “there is nothing wrong with giving money….Time Warner is a big company. I’m sure Time Warner gives money to different organizations, except I have no idea what it is.” He then asked, “So, what I want from you is, the $1 million figure, all those zeroes…is it different? Is it substantially different?” The correspondent answered that apparently, the owner of Fox News donates “exponentially more than other organizations- news organizations’ parent companies give to any one organization in a year.” She displayed the figures, as reported by CQ MoneyLine, with an on-screen graphic, that News Corp. gave $1,089,000 to Republicans and $113,000 to Democrats during the 2009-2010 period. Yellin continued that “our parent company [Time Warner] gave $91,500 to Republicans in the last two years, and $135,500 to Democrats….So, $135,000, compared to more than a million- it’s a magnitude scale difference.” Later in the segment, the CNN correspondent moved on to donations of GE, the parent company of their competitor MSNBC: “GE is the one company that’s given as much money- almost as much money total, but not to one group….But they’re not just a media company. They’re technology, financial services.”  She continued that “the Democratic Governors Association is calling on Fox to have a disclaimer on air, saying- hey, we gave- our parent company gave this much money to the RGA.” Sanchez replied with his “way, way, way to the right” label and continued with his take on the ideological stances of MSNBC and his own network: ” You know, you’re allowed to have a perspective. One of our other competitors tends to sway to the left. So, that’s the way it works. And we happen to be in the middle, and that’s the way we do things. ” Earlier in 2010, the New York Times reported that CNN was touting itself as “the only credible, nonpartisan voice left” on cable television. Writer Stuart Elliott’s quoted from network president Jonathan Klein during a presentation to advertisers: “‘Our mission, our mandate, is to deliver the best journalism in the world,’ said Jonathan Klein….’ No bias, no agenda .’ That philosophy ‘puts us in a category of one,’ he added, as CNN’s competitors ‘have abandoned the field’ of objective reporting .” Three CNN personalities with documented examples of liberal bias- Anderson Cooper , Candy Crowley , and Wolf Blitzer – appeared on a panel during the presentation. The transcript of the relevant portion of the segment from Wednesday’s Rick’s List: SANCHEZ: So, a lot of folks have been talking about this story. This is News Corp., and- you know, part of the reason this becomes newsworthy is, it’s one of our competitors- JESSICA YELLIN: Yes. SANCHEZ: Fox News. They’re owned by Rupert Murdoch- that’s News Corp. He has given- what, a million dollars to the GOP? YELLIN: Their parent organization, News Corp., has given a million to the Republican Governors Association- SANCHEZ: Right. YELLIN: A Republican group-  the association, yeah. SANCHEZ: So, I guess what I want to get from you- and to put it- to make it fair, because- look, there is nothing wrong with giving money. It’s the way this system works. YELLIN: Right. SANCHEZ: All big- we are a big company. Time Warner is a big company. I’m sure Time Warner gives money to different organizations, except I have no idea what it is. I mean, I have nothing to do with it. You have nothing to do with it. But that’s part of the process. So, what I want from you is, the $1 million figure, all those zeroes- YELLIN: Yes. SANCHEZ: Is it different? Is it substantially different? YELLIN: It’s exponentially more than other organizations- news organizations’ parent companies give to any one organization in a year. SANCHEZ: Really? YELLIN: We made up a graph. I’m not- do we have the graphic? SANCHEZ: Hey, do we have that, guys? YELLIN: I’m not sure if we have it. But- SANCHEZ: We do. We got it- go. YELLIN: Great. Look at this. So, that’s News Corp. That’s how much they gave to Republicans, all told, and Democrats. Look at the comparison between the two, okay? (Sanchez laughs) And then, if we can advance to look at some of the other news organizations, as you say, Time Warner- okay, that’s all we have.  But, to give you an example, Time Warner- SANCHEZ: Okay- yeah? YELLIN: Our parent company gave $91,500 to Republicans in the last two years, and $135,500 to Democrats. SANCHEZ: Okay. YELLIN: So, $135,000, compared to more than a million- it’s a magnitude scale difference. SANCHEZ: It means we’re cheap. (laughs) YELLIN: (laughs) Don’t let the bosses hear you say that. Yeah, and- you know- look, Rick, to be fair, this is why some critics say corporate ownership of media is bad. They worry that this does influence the process. SANCHEZ: Oh, there’s the graphic, by the way, that you were talking about a little while ago. YELLIN: There’s Time Warner. SANCHEZ: Yeah. YELLIN: GE is the one company that’s given as much money- almost as much money total, but not to one group- SANCHEZ: And they own? YELLIN: But they’re not just a media company. SANCHEZ: Yeah. YELLIN: They’re technology, financial services. They own NBC. SANCHEZ: Right. YELLIN: I mean, the bottom line, as you know, Fox is always going on- their message is ‘fair and balanced,’ ‘fair and balanced.’ Now, the Democratic Governors Association is calling on Fox to have a disclaimer on air, saying- hey, we gave- our parent company gave this much money to the RGA. SANCHEZ: That’s interesting. And, of course, the argument would be Fox News obviously tends to lean way, way, way to the right. Most people- YELLIN: So you say. SANCHEZ: So- yeah, right.(both Sanchez and Yellin laugh) I don’t know why I came up with that. YELLIN: It’s fair and balanced. SANCHEZ: I don’t know why I came up with that. YELLIN: Haven’t you seen the graphic? (laughs) SANCHEZ: Maybe it’s because I have watched from time to time. But- well, that’s fine. You know, you’re allowed to have a perspective. One of our other competitors tends to sway to the left. So, that’s the way it works. And we happen to be in the middle, and that’s the way we do things. So, the argument is then- look, the fact of the matter is, you’re accused of going to the right, and now, you give this huge check for a million dollars, and the Democrats are accusing them by saying- that seals the deal. YELLIN: It’s pure bias- it’s proven, is what the Democrats say. Now, they say- Fox, the owners of Fox say- hey, actually, this organization, the Republican governors, reflect our political- our business values. They’re going to stand for lower taxes and less regulation, and that’s what we like. So- SANCHEZ: Interesting. YELLIN: The truth is, it’s honestly a lot about business decisions, but this is why it’s important to: A, have transparent media- have transparency in donations. We need to know this stuff, and it’s important for all this information to be getting out more often than it does. SANCHEZ: And, by the way, just to be fair to Fox and to Rupert Murdoch and to News Corp., there’s no- there’s nothing to suggest here that they were trying to hide anything, right? YELLIN: No! SANCHEZ: No. It’s out in the open. YELLIN: No. It’s out there.

Michael Douglas To Undergo Treatment For Throat Tumor

‘I am very optimistic,’ Douglas says in a statement. By Kara Warner Michael Douglas Photo: MTV News Michael Douglas is set to begin chemotherapy after doctors recently discovered a tumor in his throat. People magazine reports that the “Wall Street” actor’s doctors expect Douglas to make a full recovery as soon as he completes eight weeks of treatment, which will reportedly include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. “I am very optimistic,” Douglas said in a statement to the magazine. No word yet on how the treatment will affect his work schedule, as Douglas has a lot on his plate, including promotion for his return to the character Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which opens at the end of September. Douglas is also set to appear alongside a slew of stars in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller “Knockout.” The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton. When MTV News last caught up with the 65-year-old actor, he appeared happy and healthy at the Film Society of Lincoln Center Honors, where he received the year’s top honor, presented to Hollywood legends. At the time, Douglas was hard-pressed to pick his favorite role from his four-decade-long career in the business. “You work as hard on your failures as on your successes,” he said. “I’d say tonight, particularly because [director] Curtis [Hanson] is here, I liked ‘Wonder Boys’ a lot. ‘Solitary Man’ is right up there. I’m real happy with my batting average. I look at the rest, and it’s pretty good. You pick your spots.” Share your well-wishes for Michael Douglas and his family in the comments.

Mel Gibson Crashes Car Into Hillside

Actor is unhurt after Malibu accident. By Jocelyn Vena Mel Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s been a rough year for Mel Gibson. First, damaging messages he allegedly left ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were leaked. Now, Gibson was involved in a car accident Sunday near Malibu. TMZ reports that the actor was driving his 2008 Maserati around 8:35 p.m. when he struck a hillside in the California town. According to the California Highway Police report, “For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside. He stopped his car at the scene and was contacted by officers from the West Valley CHP Area.” Gibson was not hurt and “DUI is not suspected in the accident,” according to officials. “Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement and received a ride home from a friend,” the report continues. CHP spokesman Leland Tang spoke to TMZ about the incident and said Gibson’s accident “was totally an unintentional act.” No charges will be filed, and no citation was given in connection to the incident. “Gibson told officers in the field he did not know how the car drifted out of the lane and into the hillside,” Tang added. A rep for Gibson told People magazine that “he’s fine.” E! Online reports that Gibson had just returned from a fishing vacation in Fiji, where he was joined by his sons. Gibson is next expected to give a deposition in a custody case with Grigorieva over their 9-month-old daughter, Lucia, as well as the domestic-violence investigation.

Why ‘Expendables’ Soared, ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Crashed At Box Office

Megastars, marketing and hard-core action won out over comic-book adaptation. By Eric Ditzian Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Photo: Millennium Films At one end of the cinema landscape this weekend stood a bunch of past-their-prime action heroes with quick trigger fingers and arthritic knees. At the other end lounged some hipster ass-kickers, spouting jaded one-liners and every so often brawling like “Mortal Kombat” warriors. Given such a matchup, you might be forgiven for thinking that 64-year-old Sylvester Stallone and “The Expendables” had no chance in competing with Michael Cera’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” at the box office. But Sly dominated, even outperforming early estimates, pulling in $35 million. Meanwhile, “Scott Pilgrim,” which was tracking poorly to begin with, managed only a disappointing $10.5 million. So what happened? Why did “Expendables” kill it, while “Scott Pilgrim” couldn’t expand its audience from the niche fans who went all foamy-at-the-mouth during the flick’s Comic-Con panel? “Lionsgate is the best in the business at targeting adult men with ultra-violent fare,” said Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru . ” ‘Expendables’ worked well at the box office because it offered a value-pack of stars and had great marketing. Stallone by himself doesn’t sell, but backed by an army of familiar faces, it became a can’t-miss action film for many people. The misleading push of how Stallone, [Arnold] Schwarzenegger, and [Bruce] Willis were doing their first action movie together probably fooled a few folks into buying tickets too.” Yet action flicks have been anything but reliable box-office draws this summer. Films such as “The A-Team” and “Knight and Day” — like “Expendables,” flicks starring well-known talent and not dressed up with 3-D or a ton of CG work — underperformed this year. Did “Expendables” simply benefit from a vastly superior marketing campaign, or was there something about its particular brand of action that resonated with the public? Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, argues that Sly’s flick benefited from an emphasis on grenades instead of laughs. ” ‘A-Team’ and ‘Knight and Day’ are action/comedies, whereas ‘The Expendables’ is a balls-to-the-wall action flick,” he said. “When action junkies want their fix, hardcore is the only answer, and until ‘The Expendables’ was released, we hadn’t seen a straight-up action flick all summer long.” “Scott Pilgrim,” conversely, arrived on the scene during a year that had already seen lesser-known comic properties like “Kick-Ass” and “Jonah Hex” fail to connect with mainstream audiences. Box-office experts cited a number of factors to explain why “Scott Pilgrim,” based on graphic novels that have become cult hits but are largely unfamiliar to most moviegoers, didn’t become a breakout hit. ” ‘Scott Pilgrim’ is an awesome film, just like ‘Kick-Ass’ was, but it’s too cool for its own good,” Bock said. “When you only appeal to teens and hipsters, you’re limiting your audience, and your film better only cost $30 million. Pilgrim cost at least twice that amount. Don’t spend more than $30 million on films that are too hip for the general populace.” Given its limited demographic appeal, the movie was simply a huge financial risk for Universal. Still, as we’ve seen with “Expendables,” a stellar marketing campaign can work wonders at the box office. Phil Contrino, editor at BoxOffice.com , said that the studio’s marketing effort could have “played up the romance a little bit more, [which] may have brought in more female moviegoers, but it wouldn’t have made a huge difference.” “It’s a film with a narrow appeal and Michael Cera is far from a reliable draw at the box office,” he added. “It’s destined to be a cult hit and it could make up for its lackluster theatrical performance with strong sales on home-viewing platforms.” Pandya points to the summer’s crowded release schedule as another reason for the movie’s $10.5 million opening (which put it in fifth place, just behind “Inception” in its fifth weekend). ” ‘Scott Pilgrim’ could have worked better at a different time of the year,” he said. “The target audience of young people tend to get tapped out of cash by late summer and become even more picky with their few dollars left, especially this year with so much more they have to spend on 3-D movies. Studios and production companies should think more about costs before turning comic properties into movies, given how flooded the market is becoming. Fans don’t have the time and money to see everything.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Time Magazine: ‘Is Rangel Simply Guilty of Business As Usual?’

But everybody’s doing it! That excuse may not have gotten you out of hot water with your parents, but it seems to hold some sway with Time magazine, at least when it comes to ethically-challenged former House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.). Staffer Michael Scherer apparently drew the short straw for the August 13 assignment , in which he focused on just one of the numerous allegations of impropriety against Rangel: that he misused his congressional office to solicit contributions to the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service. Of course, there are other serious charges against Rangel — who used to chair the House committee responsible for federal tax policy — namely that he avoided paying taxes on property that he owns. From the July 29 Washington Times: The charges, detailed in a 40-page “Statement of Alleged Violation,” break down into four categories: that he solicited money for the Rangel Center from those doing business before his committee; that he made errors and omissions on his financial disclosure forms; that he was given use of a rent-subsidized apartment for an office; and that he failed to report rental income and and pay federal taxes on it. Curiously, Scherer failed to mention those three other categories in his blog post.

Henry Rollins Knows What’s Wrong with American Education – and Guess Who’s to Blame

On the heels of a new College Board report that the United States is struggling to compete with other countries when it comes to college completion rates, Vanity Fair’s resident straight talker, Henry Rollins, has figured out the problem.  The education system isn’t struggling because of possible factors contained within the report, such as: Inadequate funding of preschool programs Poor college counseling programs for middle and high school aged children High school dropout rates A lack of international standardization for curriculum Skyrocketing costs of education No, Henry has stumbled onto the real, super secret reason why students are failing to finish their college work:  Sarah Palin and George Bush .  To be accurate, it’s not so much the direct fault of Palin and Bush – rather, it is those of you who support them, their stupid comments, and their intellectually uninterested ways.  Their fans see them as real people and because of that, they feel comfort in an unchallenging environment. Rollins explains why ‘America doesn’t seem to value a college education the way it used to’: “…in America the educated person is often seen as some sissified, fragile know-it-all who looks down at the common man. Every time Sarah Palin says something stupid, she gets more fans. To them, she is “real.” It’s the same reason why so many Americans loved George Bush. They saw themselves in this intellectually uninterested man and found comfort in such an unchallenging environment.” Worse, Rollins somehow manages to immediately transition into a Hitler reference.  In explaining that Americans seem to express disdain for the educated person (via leaders such as Palin and Bush), he then goes on to say: “What leaders had contempt for educated people?  Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, to name a few.” And “Funny how the very idea of increased education opportunities threatens some Americans.  They will tell you that education is stupid.” And “America’s abysmal report card, appalling treatment of teachers, and hostile contempt for its young people should be our national shame, the sub-literate albatross swinging from our collective neck.  America No. 1?  Not even close.” Now, before you go accusing Mr. Rollins of being a liar, a liar, a liar, a liar , it is important to note that Henry speaks from experience, having come from a very thorough, college-educated background himself.  However, in this case anyway, it is apparent that Palin and Bush weren’t the cause of at least one American quitting college.   Rollins dropped out of American University following a very brief stint (one semester) in the late ‘70’s.  Citing reasons such as boredom, and the fact that his classmates would rather study beer and bongs than read books, Rollins instead pursued his musical career. Seems he is partially correct.  There are some individuals out there who look at college experience with contempt, threatened by education because it is, in a word, stupid.  By way of contrast, Sarah Palin earned a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.  Oh, and that intellectually uninterested guy we mentioned earlier?  He earned a history degree from Yale University in 1968, and is the only President to have ever earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Make no mistake, Henry Rollins is an incredibly intelligent, well-read, real-world educated person, and Vanity Fair is wise in giving him an outlet.  But traipsing into the world of liberal lunacy (Palin and Bush Derangement Syndrome) clouds any argument one can make.  In this case, Rollins opines that education suffers because of uneducated people who have a better education than himself.  The result is intellectually dishonest and hypocritical. In other words, he is the Wrong Man for this debate. – Rusty welcomes comments/feedback at Weiss.Rusty@gmail.com .

Father of Fantasia Barrino: God Will Help, Daughter Will Be Okay

Following a scary overdose and hospital admission , Fantasia Barrino is finally home. The singer is recovering from a tumultuous couple of weeks her father says, as he’s released a statement thanking followers for their love and assuring all of us his daughter will be okay. “Fantasia was pleased with all the messages of support from her fans, but just now she just needs to rest and bring everything back together,” Joseph Barrino said. “This has been a difficult time but she will pull through.” As for Fantasia’s daughter, Zion, Mr. Barrino says the young girl “was staying with both myself and her grandmother but she is back with Fantasia now.” “She is getting a lot of comfort with being with her daughter and the doctors have told her just to rest,” Joseph added. “My daughter just needs time – she is a strong girl and with God’s help she will be okay.” Unfortunately, Fantasia’s troubles may just be beginning. Because her native North Carolina is one of the few states that still has certain adultery laws on the books, she could actually be sued for having an affair with Antwaun Cook . At last check, Paula Cook was mighty steamed over her husband’s relationship with the singer and might take legal action against them both. We’ll keep readers apprised of any developments, and simply wish a healthy recovery to Fantasia for now.

Hype-brids: Networks Tout Green Vehicles, But Americans Buy Four Times as Many SUVs

If news outlets were fueled by bias, then ABC, CBS, and NBC would be Hummers. Over the past two years, the media have declared Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) “dying” while celebrating the popularity of hybrid cars. Americans disagree. Data from Edmunds.com showed SUV market share has grown or remained stable whereas hybrid market share has declined. In July 2010 alone, SUVs outsold hybrids 4 to one. When gas prices were high in summer 2008, the media eagerly reported the demise of the SUV and wrote its epitaph, as CBS News’s Hattie Kauffman eloquently did on May 26, 2008: “Here lies the mighty sport utility vehicle, once a symbol of status and power, now collecting dust.” From July 2009 to July 2010, total SUV sales increased by 38.9 percent whereas hybrid sales have decreased by 32.7 percent. Large SUV sales alone have increased by nearly 40 percent. Yet back in 2008, the three networks all paid their respects to the “dying” SUV, with ABC’s Chris Cuomo jumping on the hybrid bandwagon before the SUVs body was even cold: “Everybody’s trying to sell their SUV, want to get into one of these new jobs, you know, the smart car, the hybrid, the high-mileage type vehicles, all these alternative cars.” The “everybody” Cuomo mentioned must only have included the hybrid owners and not the SUV owners. Despite the overwhelming numbers, since June 2008, the Business & Media Institute discovered the networks’ covered hybrid cars three to one over SUVs. Specifically, there were more stories about the Toyota Prius (37) than on the top 5 best-selling SUVs combined (24). Still, back in 2008 network reporters such as ABC News’s David Muir predicted a green upheaval as he erroneously reported on the SUVs demise. “American carmakers are looking for a revolution, too. The gas guzzlers so popular yesterday are no longer popular today,” Muir said on July 20, 2008. The only “guzzlers” are the media members who continually drink the liberal Kool Aid. In May 2008, the first month of high gas prices, hybrid models had 2.52 percent market share. The hybrid model market share in May 2010, two years into the “revolution:” 2.52 percent. Those numbers didn’t stop CBS’s Anthony Mason from ushering in the “electric era” on the April 1, 2010 CBS “Evening News:” “Well, it’s a real challenge, but Katie, we are at the dawn of the electric era,” Mason declared. That “dawn” may not be rising as fast as Mason hoped. According to the Market Data Center , the best selling vehicle in the month of July was the Ford F150, a pickup truck. Fortunately, for Kauffman, Muir, and Mason, as their network ratings crumble , there are plenty of “gas guzzling” SUVs around to carry their remains. Volt and Prius: A Media Love Story Despite pedestrian sales numbers and recalls, reporters at the big three networks continue channeling their inner Billy Mays, turning their segments into infomercials for eco-friendly cars. The media’s favorite green cars have been the new Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius. The networks aired nearly twice as many Volt stories (42) as they aired on the top five selling SUVs combined (24). Further proof of network favoritism: Ford F150’s have outsold the Prius nearly three to one, yet the networks have covered the Prius over the F150 three to one (37 to 12). The Prius has established itself as an environmental symbol thanks to the media hyping its popularity with the liberal Hollywood elite, as CBS reporter Ben Tracy did on Feb. 11, 2010. Tracy interviewed actors Penelope Cruz and Orlando Bloom and concluded Hollywood star power “helped make the Prius a household name.” Being outsold three to one by a “gas guzzler” is an awfully big amount for a “household name.” The Chevy Volt, a plug-in electric car expected to hit the market in November, has also been popular with the media. Both NBC “Today” host Matt Lauer and CBS’s Mason took test rides in the Volt, with Lauer being the first non-GM person to actually drive it. Additionally, all three networks hyped the Volt in their coverage of the 2009 and 2010 Detroit International Auto Shows, nearly two years before the Volt was even expected to hit the market. Recently, some in the media were outraged when GM announced the Volt would be priced at $41,000. Of course, when challenged about the price in a July 29 press conference, Ron Bloom, Obama’s senior advisor to the Treasury Secretary for automobiles, distanced the government from GM. “We do not tell GM what to charge for cars,” Bloom said. “Most kinds of new technology are expensive.” Unlike batteries, which require positive and negative charges to work, the government only operates on positive charges, such as the positives touted by Obama in his July 30 visit to Michigan, but dismisses negative charges. The Obama Administration found plenty of positive charge in the network news reports, as all three networks praised Obama’s July 30 visit to GM where he test rode the Volt. ABC’s Karen Travers called it a “victory lap” and NBC’s Savannah Guthrie echoed Obama’s remarks that the “American auto industry [is] resurrected from the dead.” Since summer 2008, only ABC and NBC interviewed analysts skeptical of the green car business model. NBC’s Phil LeBeau interviewed Standard and Poor Equity analyst Efraim Levy on May 6, 2009, where Levy noted smaller, green cars would result in smaller profits but larger losses. “Smaller cars have smaller price tags. So, therefore, you have less room to make the profits, and if a car’s not successful, the losses are even more painful,” Levy said. Case in point: the 1997 GM EV1, which was named one of Time magazine’s ‘ Worst Cars of All Time. ‘ The EV1, GM’s first attempt at an electric car, flopped due to disappointing battery power and a lack of demand . The EV1 retailed at $34,000, cost GM $80,000 per vehicle, and ultimately GM lost $2 billion on the EV1 program. The $2 billion is more than the $1.3 billion second quarter profit GM recently reported. Instead of the SUV, the GM EV1 is now the vehicle “collecting dust.” Cart Before the Horse On April 1, 2010, the big three network news broadcasts fooled their viewers with reports on fuel emission standards. ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news shows each aired stories about the new fuel emissions standards, which had been based on the 2007 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules and championed by the Obama Administration. According to the new standards, by model year 2016 all cars and light trucks must average 35.5 miles per gallon. ABC and CBS sandwiched their reports between stories on – you guessed it – Toyota and the Volt, whereas NBC’s Lee Cowan devoted a full two minute report on the new standards. He actually noted the cost of lowering emissions will trickle down to the consumer: “But reaching that new efficiency level does come with a price, an estimated $52 million for car manufacturers to be paid by the consumer. About $1,000 per car may be added on to the sticker price,” Cowan reported. But Cowan still encouraged viewers to buy a green car, saying it will save them money in the long run: “Now, Brian, although these new cars will cost a little bit more, the government says that will be more than offset by your savings in fuel, they’re saying about $3,000 over the course of that new environmentally-friendly vehicle.” Cowan’s report was misleading. A 2006 study by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine discovered that of the top seven hybrids, only the Prius will save you money over five years compared to a non-hybrid vehicle. According to the study, three out of the seven hybrids will cost you over $3,000 more, the amount the government claims you’ll save. Myron Ebell, director of energy and global warming policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free market think tank, told BMI he thinks the new fuel emission standards will lead to more dire consequences than just hitting consumers’ pockets. “I think automakers will go bankrupt again,” Ebell said. “In order to meet the new standards, big cars will become expensive and they’re going to have to sell a lot of small cars. Detroit automakers have never figured out how to make a profit on small cars.” Ebell added that the 2007 CAFE standards “foreshadowed” the auto bailouts and that the bailouts have turned Chrysler and GM into “creatures of the Obama Administration.’ “The automakers are in worse shape than had they gone into bankruptcy,” Ebell said. “Bankruptcy would have broken the worst part of the union contract and they [GM and Chrysler] wouldn’t have to answer to the government.” Only ABC News interviewed anyone challenging the government’s boat-without-a-paddle auto policy and its relation to energy standards. On Jan. 11, 2009, ABC’s Bianna Golodryga interviewed Jean Jennings, editor-in-chief of Automobile magazine: “The government is on the wrong track because they are dictating fuel economy without an energy policy,” Jennings said. “And yet, they are forcing the car companies to spend billions of dollars in development costs for a technology that might be way ahead of what people want.” Yet the networks didn’t challenge the Obama Administration’s fuel emission demands for the auto industry. Ironically, for three networks that won’t cover SUVs, they’ve become SUVs for Obama’s auto plan: Steadily Urging Victory. End of the Road In “Home Improvement,” Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor often shouted “more power!” For the media, it’s worth shouting “less bias.” With SUVs alive and well, the network news shows remain committed to promoting green cars and cheerleading the Obama Administration’s auto policies. According to Michael LaFaive, director of the Morley Fiscal Policy Initiative at The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a free market think tank, Obama’s auto praises are played out in the media like a “Rooseveltian victory lap.” “There’s no ribbon cutting ceremony for tax cuts like there is for opening a new battery factory,” LaFaive said. “The government has nothing to sell this as a way to stimulate demand.” Despite the unfavorable media coverage, SUVs are still in demand and rather than collecting dust, they’re making hybrids eat their dust. Methodology The Business & Media Institute examined news stories from ABC, CBS, and NBC from June 1, 2008, through July 15, 2010. June 1, 2008, was selected because it was after Memorial Day and in the thick of the high summer 2008 gas prices. BMI also examined the three evening news stories from Friday, July 30, 2010, the day Obama visited the Volt assembly plant in Michigan. Final numbers included 69 stories on hybrid vehicles and 19 on SUVs. Based on the June sales from AOL Autos, the top five best selling SUVs are the Chevy Traverse, Chevy Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Honda CR-V. Only stories longer than 100 words were counted. Recall stories were excluded because they focused on consumer safety as opposed to the actual cars.
