Australia Plans To Implement Plain-Packaging Rule For Cigarettes

Australia has planned for new rules forcing tobacco companies to use plain packaging carrying graphic health warnings. Starting in July 2012, manufacturers would be required to drop all color and branding logos from cigarette packs. The move which is billed as world-first comes after the recommendations were made by the World Health Organization (WHO). Australia also announced an increase of 25percent in tax on cigarettes that would be effective from 0001 on Friday. The move will put A$2.16 ($1.99, £1.31) on a pack of 30 cigarettes. The law will require all tobacco products to be sold in a standard style and will also carry government health warnings. According statistics, 15,000 Australians died every year because of smoking. Smoking is the largest preventable cause of disease and death in the country. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will hold elections this year and he aims to trim down smoking-related deaths to under 10percent by 2018. He added this will be the most hard-line regime for cigarette packaging anywhere in the world. A spokeswoman for Imperial Tobacco Australia released a statement that the company planned to fight the measure given by the government. Introducing plain packaging will take away the ability of the consumer to identify the brand from another brand. Cigarette companies value their logos a lot for it identifies their brand. The tax hike comes a day after the New Zealand government announced it would raise cigarette taxes by 30% over three years. Plies Thanks Young Jeezy For The ‘Opportunity’ To Collaborate

‘It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse,’ Plies tells Mixtape Daily of ‘Lose My Mind.’ By Shaheem Reid Plies Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Plies Plies and Young Jeezy have an obvious respect for each other. If you know either one of the Southern street champs, you know they won’t do collaborations with just anybody. Plies just released the song “Look Like,” featuring Jeezy and Fabolous, which comes on the heels of the underground record “So Bad” that leaked last year and the Snowman’s current club anthem “Lose My Mind.” “For me, bruh, to have an opportunity to create the situation I created with my brother and to have an artist from a record-selling standpoint and accomplish what the Snowman accomplished and to reach out to us and allow us to know there was a situation he wanted us to be a part of, it speaks a lot to what we gained and built in this business,” Plies said of being on “Lose My Mind.” “It speaks a lot of him as a person. A lot of times in this game, a lot of cats can respect you and be scared to show you they respect you. I take my hat to him for it. It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse and watch the record respond out of the gate like it is in the clubs and in the streets. I think we got a hell of a situation. “He hit me the other day, and I told him he has a song that I consider to be a street antique,” Plies added. “To pick and choose the records we do is the most important thing. I always told myself from day one: I’ll never be a music whore when it came to this business. I always wanted to make sure I did in my heart what I felt was the right things to do. To get myself in a financial space where I don’t have to make desperate decisions, I feel we accomplished that thus far. I’m gonna try to continue to make more right moves than wrong moves.” Although the version of “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” that appeared on Raymond v. Raymond doesn’t feature Plies’ verse that rocked on radio this winter, the Florida native didn’t have anything negative to say about working with Usher. “It was good,” Plies said about the experience. “I was on my way to New York. My brother actually got the call. They say they needed the record back in a couple of hours. I didn’t hear the record. My brother, he didn’t have to let me hear it. He said, ‘It’s a go, bruh.’ I got the record, they called back, said they needed it in an hour. Ran to the studio, had my assistant push my flight back. We heard the record; we felt the record was great.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . London Lost £100m In Volcano Ash Flight Ban

The Icelandic volcanic ash cloud has caused UK airspace to close and this resulted to a lost tourist spending of more than £100m. The London mayor said each day about 30,000 overseas visitors arrive by air at this time of year, spending £17m in total. The last week’s flight ban had caused the city about £102m. Tourism is massively significant for jobs and growth in the capital. Hotel occupancy has dropped for about 25 percent, theaters, restaurants and shops also have experienced a fall in visitors. Some companies suffered the reduced footfall on London’s streets and others were facing disappointed customers, heavy backlogs and costly penalties from being unable to access airfreight services to deliver the three million items sent by companies every day. About more than 95,000 flights were cancelled all around Europe throughout the 6 days of disruption. According to the Mayor of London Boris John, “the coming out of the economic downturn, the last thing the capital’s economy needed was all air traffic in and out of the city grounded for a week.” London Lost £100m In Volcano Ash Flight Ban is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
