Busta Rhymes: Nicki Minaj ‘Stands Alone’ Among ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Finalists

‘She’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level,’ the animated MC says of the Young Money Barbie. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News With a bunch of memorable features already under her belt, a BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and a surprise #1 hit with “Your Love” , Nicki Minaj is reveling in her status as the queen of the hitmaking Young Money crew. Now, as a top-five finalist for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” Minaj is proving she’s truly unstoppable this year. For many of her fans, including fellow animated New York MC Busta Rhymes, there’s not much more Nicki can do to secure her position as one of the hottest rappers around. “I think she’s already doing everything that it takes to get to the next level. She’s standing alone — there is no two Nicki Minajs right now,” Busta told MTV News. Bussa Bus credits the Young Money Barbie’s success to “her diversity, as far as what she’s able to display style-wise.” Busta explained that a lot of rappers can become stagnant when it comes to their style, an occupational hazard he hasn’t seen Nicki fall victim to yet. “A lot of the times we get stuck into these characters where we kind of become slaves to those characters; we sound a particular kind of a way all of the time,” he explained. “I’m never saying that it’s not a good thing. We should always trademark certain things about us so that people can identify with it off the top. But it’s always good to be able to show people how diversified you are and what you’re capable of outside your comfort zone,” Busta said. “It feels like she ain’t got no problem displaying that.” And while many Nicki fans would agree that Minaj has the music game on lock, Busta said that the star should try to shut down Hollywood as well. “I probably think the one thing she need to do that she ain’t did yet was show up in a couple of these movies,” Busta said, adding, “and it’s a wrap. She get a couple of these movies and steal the scenes that she’s in the same way she do it on these records, she going to put the nail in the coffin with that.” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Ludacris, Busta Rhymes Weigh In On Michael Jackson’s Legacy

‘It ain’t even the King of Pop no more,’ Busta tells MTV News, as he dubs MJ the ‘King of Music.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Michael Jackson Photo: Columbia Pictures Michael Jackson’s impact on pop culture is still being felt a year after the mega-star’s death. Sequined jackets and jaunty fedoras have made a comeback and a grown man can’t bust out a falsetto without invoking MJ’s signature swagger. Can you even count how many times you’ve heard “Thriller” in the past year? And while many may try, for some fans, no one will ever be able to replace the Gloved One. Jackson’s influence on the hip-hop community is highly regarded, and rappers Ludacris and Busta Rhymes told MTV News they’re still feeling his loss. “I know there’s a lot of people that … may have been influenced by him and you may see certain things in music and dances. But at the end of the day, he’s untouchable,” Ludacris said of Jackson’s legacy. “I feel like the best way to pay homage and to preserve his legacy is to let him stand alone and continue to be the star that we remember him as.” Busta said that calling Jackson the “King of Pop” is no longer fitting and offered up a new title for the pioneering artist. “It ain’t even just the King of Pop no more. I think we gon’ bury that and we gon’ give you the new attribute that goes along with your greatness, as the ‘King of Music,’ ” Busta said. Whether Busta’s suggested upgrade becomes a part of the popular vernacular remains to be seen, the late entertainer’s legacy certainly seems to be making the case for a name change. Everything from a King of Pop-inspired video game to a museum dedicated to his game-changing career is in the works. Plus, Jackson’s estate has been raking it in over the last 12 months, generating $1 billion since his death. Bussa Bus had a heartfelt sentiment to share with fans touched by MJ’s life and art. “We miss you,” he said. “May you forever rest peacefully.” Celebrate Michael Jackson’s legacy all week long as MTV News looks back at his life, his music and the death that shook the world one year ago. DJ Khaled Tells How He Ignited Hot 97’s Summer Jam

‘I wanted to come with 20 minutes of straight excitement,’ superstar DJ says of guests Cam’ron, Rick Ross, Fat Joe and more. By Shaheem Reid DJ Khaled, Fat Joe and T-Pain Photo: Walik Goshorn The man behind “All I Do Is Win” left the new Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with a “W” in his back pocket on Sunday. DJ Khaled’s set was the highlight of Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert , as he orchestrated one of the greatest onstage artist lineups in the history of the now-legendary annual event. “We brought out Cam, Busta, Joe Crack [a.k.a Fat Joe], Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Vado, Ludacris, myself,” Khaled said. “And I brought Barrington Levy out. We made a movie. I wanted to come out there with 20 minutes of straight excitement from beginning to the end. I just wanted to go bah, bah, bah!” the DJ said of wanting to bring the element of surprise to the Meadowlands crowd. “Every artist on the bill is superstars. I was thinking to myself, ‘What am I gonna do?’ Because [so many of] the artists are already on the bill. I had to pull out cards like the Barrington card, the Busta card, the Killa [Cam] card. That’s hip-hop man.” Khaled let each of his guests rock the stage for a short while. But no one got a bigger response than Harlem’s own Cam’ron, who made his return to SJ for the first time in more than three years. Killa came out to his classic “I Really Mean It.” Khaled’s set ended with a nod to his current hit, the remix of “All I Do Is Win.” More than 50,000 people did as it says on the chorus: They put their hands up — and kept ’em there. ” ‘All I Do is Win,’ to see the whole stadium put their hands in the sky,” Khaled marveled on his set highlights. “And of course when Cam’ron came out, you felt that New York energy. That was important to be in New York. Then when Crack came out with that ‘Ha Ha’ and of course Ricky Ross broke the new record onstage … ‘Super High’ and ‘[Blowin’ Money Fast] B.M.F.’ This is just a movie man. It’s hip-hop. This is what I’m talking about.” Trey Songz, Usher, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Fabolous, Gucci Mane and Juelz Santana were also among those who performed at this year’s Summer Jam. Capone-N-Noreaga Revisit The War Report Before Recording Sequel

Busta Rhymes urged the duo to listen to the original, even though they had avoided it for years. Capone-N-Noreaga Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Thanks to Busta Rhymes, Capone-N-Noreaga had to face the music. The Queens duo, friends for more than 20 years, decided they would make a sequel to their classic debut, The War Report, late last year. Upon hearing of the re-up, Busta — who guest-starred on the original album — called the group and told them before they went into production on part two, they had to listen to part one. “I’mma be honest: For years, I could never listen to The War Report, ” N.O.R.E. told MTV News. “It wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of it; it just brought up so much pain and so much hurt. To listen to it, I used to tear up. I used to think about Capone when he was gone [in jail]. I didn’t just lose a partner, I lost a best friend. It’s like not being able to use your right hand. When I listen to The War Report, it’s bugged out. I’m talking about years of not being able to listen to The War Report. When Busta said that, it was almost, like, painful: ‘Damn! I got to?’ But when I did it, I knew exactly what he was talking about. I had to go back into that style. It’s beyond the music; it’s the feeling, the tension that was built around it. We luckily captured it [on the new album].” Noreaga’s other half, Capone, also has his horror stories from the time the first War Report was made. “I really didn’t listen to the War Report album for a long time too,” Capone said. ” The War Report was a long time for me. Besides what he was going through and what I was going through, it was a lot of family stuff — losing my mother, getting shot. … During War Report, I had to go to jail. I was on the clock. I was on the studio-time clock and the judge clock. Every day, knowing I was getting closer and closer to going to jail, you feel like, ‘Why am I doing this? I’m about to go to jail. Nothing is promised to me. Why am I recording this?’ “Certain songs I sit back and listen and be like, ‘I gave 60 percent effort there. I gave 80 percent effort there. Damn, I could remember that day. I had to go to the hospital to get my bandage checked,’ ” Capone added. “I really didn’t like listening to War Report until Busta … gave us that talk. Like, ‘You have to. You have to.’ ” “I wanted Bus back as a fan,” Noreaga added. “I love when Bus calls: ‘Yo, you blacked on that Jay Electronica joint.’ I wasn’t getting those calls for a while.” The War Report 2 is slated for a June 15 release to coincide with the anniversary of the original. The first War Report came out June 17, 1997. Meanwhile, C-N-N just released a new single, “Thug Planet,” with Iman Thug. Related Artists Capone-N-Noreaga
