Spears’ tour kicks off June 16 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates through North America, winding up August 13 in Toronto. But in real life, when Benson was still in high school, she wasn’t so smooth when it came to dating. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the TV star admits that on her first date, she made a major faux pas. “He took me to this sushi restaurant. I acted like, ‘Oh my gosh! I love sushi, yes, this is so awesome,’ ” she says in the all-female episode, which also features tales from La La Vazquez and Brittany Snow. “That was really my first sushi experience.” Benson certainly did have enough opportunities to practice her sushi game, but, as her pal recalls, she never did. “I do remember we had sushi Wednesdays in the cafeteria,” Darren recalled. “And I don’t think she ate it. … I am not surprised that she lied about that. We all tell little white lies here and there to impress guys and girls.” So Benson tried to play it cool, but didn’t play it cool enough. “I get there, and I’m like, ‘So what’s cool on the menu? The auction, which runs from April 5-21, features EMI artists, including Katy Perry, 30 Seconds to Mars, the Beatles, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, deadmau5, Lady Antebellum and Kylie Minogue. The band’s June jaunt will follow their vintage rail car tour of the U.S. kicking off in April. By James Montgomery Mumford & Sons Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Mumford & Sons are perhaps the most unconventional British act to break through in the States in quite some time, so it made sense when they announced an equally unconventional Railroad Revival Tour last month. That jaunt will see them, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show travel from show to show (and slowly through the Southwest) using only vintage trains … a nod to the barnstorming days of old. And, in an age of mobile-phone-sponsored mega-tours, it is a rather unique idea, to say the very least. Of course, their fans responded to the news quickly, and since most of the Railroad Revival dates are already sold out, Mumford have announced another run of U.S. shows, though these are of the more traditional variety (i.e., they will not be traveling via the power of the locomotive). Their new tour kicks off June 3 in Kansas City, Missouri, and runs until June 16, when they’ll conclude a two-night stand at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. Support for the trek will come from a number of bands, including Matthew & the Atlas, Nathaniel Rateliff, Cake and the Low Anthem. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, April 8, through Mumford’s official site . Mumford’s Railroad Revival Tour gets under way April 21 in Oakland, California, and wraps on April 27 in New Orleans. On April 13, the band will be in New York to film an episode of VH1’s “Unplugged,” and they’ll play the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 16, along with the likes of Kanye West, the Kings of Leon and the Arcade Fire. On Monday, the Atlanta-based MC/actor was at New York City’s Highline Ballroom for the Magnum-sponsored Live Large Project 2, a hip-hop/freestyle competition that gives contestants a shot at a cash prize and the chance to perform alongside Luda at Springfest 2011 in Miami. It’s the second year Luda has participated in the event, and the Disturbing Tha Peace Records founder said it always makes him remember his days as a hungry unknown. “I remember being an aspiring artist and up-and-coming rapper and wishing I had opportunities like the one that Magnum Live Large Project is giving out — $5,000, a trip to Miami, able to perform — all of these different things is good, man,” Luda told MTV News. “It’s all about competition. That’s what hip-hop is all about anyway.” The Highline stop was just one of four regional events that span the West Coast (Bay Area), South (Miami) and the Midwest (Detroit). The top three contestants from each region, as well as a fifth selected via YouTube, will make the trip to Miami to compete for the $5,000 prize. New York’s top three winners were Perelli, Renegade and Pumpkinhead, who won $1,000 for being the fan favorite. According to Ludacris, anyone who’s achieved his level of success should feel obligated to support events like this one and serve as a source of inspiration. “It’s definitely important for me to give back to MCs coming up,” he said.”That’s part of the reason we do what we do.
