Of 351 Reports on Outrageous Bell, Calif. Salaries, Only One Mentions Employees Are Democrats

In late July, NB Contributing Editor Tom Blumer busted the Associated Press for neglecting to mention the party affiliations of scandal-plagued officials in Bell, California. The AP piece was one of hundreds of reports on the scandal. Of those hundreds, one solitary report mentioned party labels for the five officials. Can you guess which party they belong to? I’ll bet you can. The only news outlet that mentioned the officials were Democrats was the Orange County Register. And even that paper noted the absence of party labels only in response to reader complaints. “Our readers noticed one part of the story has been left out by virtually all media sources,” the paper’s editorial board wrote. “All five council members are members of the Democratic Party.” The most prominent of the officials in question, former Bell city manager Robert Rizzo, resigned after it came to light that he was making $1.5 million per year – in a town with a per capita income languishing at about half the national average. Ann Coulter noticed the amazing absence of party labels in virtually any news coverage of the scandal. She called this blatant instance of media bias “the greatest party-affiliation cover-up since the media tried to portray Gary Condit as a Republican.” According to my own Nexis search, there have been 351 stories run by newspapers, wire services, and television news outlets. Though 350 of those 351 stories neglected to mention Rizzo’s party, many went out of their way to label California Attorney General Jerry Brown, who’s also running for governor, a Democrat. Forty-one stories mentioned Brown’s party affiliation, but not Rizzo’s. Brown is investigating the lavish salaries in Bell, and his tough talk has made for some good populist campaign soundbites. Journalists have been more than happy to call him a Democrat, while leaving Rizzo and his colleagues’ party affiliations unmentioned. Only the noble, populist warriors are Democrats. The reprobate, quasi-corrupt city managers of a destitute neighborhood in Los Angeles have no party affiliation. In the fantasy realm of politically-neutral media, the Democrat label would be played up by the media, for reasons that Ace explains : When a Republican is caught in a sex scandal, his party affiliation is extremely relevant because the Republican Party stands broadly for family values and sexual restraint, so party affiliation is very relevant, as it shows hypocrisy, that is, it tends to undermine the public image of the party…. Now, what happens when a Republican is caught in a money scandal? Well, that’s not really hypocrisy, really, as Republicans have the reputation of being into dirty filthy money. But in that case — in the case of a money scandal — the media says noting the Republican’s affiliation is relevant because it reinforces widely-held public opinion about the party… If the Republican Party is supposedly money-grubbing and only cares about big business and corporate interest, then the Democratic party is, supposedly, the party that cares about the little guy, that stands stubbornly against monied interests in favor of Joe Six Pack. Is it not the case, therefore, that if hypocrisy dictates that party affiliation is intensely relevant as regards a sex scandal involving a Republican, then hypocrisy should dictate that in a scandal involving a Democrat taking money from big business that the Democrat’s party affiliation should be similarly intensely relevant? And yet, the media continues to report such stories without granting party labels to the villains. But the hero in the MSM narrative – AG Brown – earns a party label, as he upholds the “Democrat-as-friend of the little guy” narrative. By shifting the focus of party label onto him, the media avoid the hypocrisy angle Ace elaborates, and can go on neglecting to give party label to Rizzo and his cohorts. It’s all very circular. In fairness, it is true that candidates for city board in Los Angeles do not list their party affiliations on the ballot. But does that absolve news outlets from doing a bit of, you know, reporting? Even the OC Register, which noted the lack of party labels in the course of a lukewarm defense of its own sins, claimed: On balance, though, party affiliations of elected officials should be noted and easily accessible so voters can make informed decisions about who they elect to public office. Voter registration is public information, but it currently is somewhat difficult to obtain – you need to contact a county’s registrar of voters in person or by phone and provide a full name and city. That brings us to Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown, who was quick yesterday to make political hay out of the Bell scandal, declaring he was starting an investigation. He was identified in most news stories as a Democrat. Does that make him a white hat while the Bell officials, whose party affiliations were unreported, become the black hats – from another party? Readers should know both.

CNN.com Plugs Same-Sex ‘Marriage’ Magazine ‘Born of Frustration’

CNN continued its promotion of homosexual “marriage” with an online article on Thursday highlighting a new magazine for same-sex couples planning their ceremonies. Writer Shaunte Dunston used glowing language to describe the experiences of “Equally Wed’s” founders, as well as that of vendors who cater to the homosexual community. Dunston, a ” media coordinator ” for the cable network, began her CNN.com article, ” Same-sex bridal magazine born of frustration ,” with a flowery account of Kirsten Ott and Maria Palladino’s ceremony (the two founded “Equally Wed”). The two were the main subjects of the piece: Kirsten Ott walked down the aisle in a white strapless gown with an embroidered bodice and cascading ruffles . Maria Palladino, dressed in a white suit, waited for her at the end of the aisle with a minister. Surrounded by their family and close friends, the women committed to each other for the rest of their lives . A beautiful reception followed. It had all the makings of a traditional wedding , but instead of calling themselves bride and groom, the couple used the terms bride and “broom.” “Broom is a combination of bride and groom,” said Kirsten, who took Maria’s last name when they wed. The “broom’s” cake was a giant crab, Maria’s favorite sea animal. “It was gorgeous and realistic,” Kirsten said. “It actually stole the show from the wedding cake itself.” Both were relieved the special day they had planned for so long finally arrived . The writer didn’t mention when the event took place, but continued that ” organizing a wedding can be challenging , what with finding the right photographer, the perfect cake, the prettiest flowers and, most importantly, the venue. It was even harder for Kirsten, because she had to find vendors who accepted same-sex marriage in Atlanta, Georgia, where the union isn’t legally recognized .” Dunston spent the following six paragraphs quoting extensively from Ott about their apparent difficulties in finding cooperative vendors. In the midst of this, she added that “planning their wedding inspired the newlyweds to start their own wedding magazine geared toward engaged same-sex couples. Kirsten, a journalist, and Maria, a graphic designer, used their career backgrounds and personal experience to launch the online magazine Equally Wed.” Later in the article, the CNN writer cited from one homosexual-friendly vendor who makes rings, as well as from the “Equally Wed” founders, to portray same-sex “marriages” as no different than traditional marriage: Jeweler Rony Tennenbaum in New York designs wedding rings for same-sex couples. “Most of the time they are opposite in the likes and tastes. One might be aggressive, rugged and one wants classier,” Tennenbaum said. Tennenbaum also said it’s important to break same-sex wedding stereotypes . “It’s important not to make rings that a straight person might think a gay couple wants. Gay couples don’t need to wear triangles … it’s not about symbols, it’s about signifying love.”… “That’s kind of why we wanted to do Equally Wed. [It] was to showcase normal gay weddings for anybody that’s planning their own. It helps to have a model to look at, [to] help you feel like what you’re doing is OK,” Kirsten said. Maria said most gay weddings are similar to straight weddings , but there might be a question about which bride will walk down the aisle or which groom will propose. “Just some of the little things that come out in the details of planning.” On August 4, the day that a federal judge struck down California’s Proposition 8 as “unconstitutional,” CNN’s daytime coverage leaned heavily towards supporters of same-sex “marriage,” even going so far as to get immediate reaction from patrons of a “gay” bar in West Hollywood. Two month earlier, the network aired several pro-homosexual agenda segments as part of their promotion for their propagandistic “Gary and Tony Have a Baby” documentary .

Judge orders Wells Fargo to pay back $203M in fees

Eileen Aj Connelly, AP Business Writer, On Wednesday August 11, 2010, 7:55 pm NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in California ordered Wells Fargo & Co. to change what he called “unfair and deceptive business practices” that led customers into paying multiple overdraft fees, and to pay $203 million back to customers. In a decision handed down late Tuesday, U.S. District Judge William Alsup accused Wells Fargo of “profiteering” by changing its policies to process checks, debit card transactions and bill payments from the highest dollar amount to the lowest, rather than in the order the transactions took place. That helped drain customer bank accounts faster and drive up overdraft fees, a policy Alsup referred to as “gouging and profiteering.” Wells Fargo adopted the policies beginning in 2001, and they became widespread across the banking industry. It is unclear how the ruling would apply to the rest of the industry. The ruling detailed the experiences of two Wells Fargo customers who used their debit cards for multiple small purchases, and were then charged hundreds in overdraft fees because the order the purchases were cleared by the bank depended on the amounts. The judge found the customers, who were part of a class action, were not properly informed of the bank's policies on processing payments and were unaware the bank would allow debit purchases to go through when their accounts were overdrawn. “Internal bank memos and e-mails leave no doubt that, overdraft revenue being a big profit center, the bank's dominant, indeed sole, motive was to maximize the number of overdrafts,” Alsup wrote. That policy would “squeeze as much as possible” from customers with overdrafts, in particular from the 4 percent of customers who paid what he called “a whopping 40 percent of its total overdraft and returned-item revenue.” The judge dismissed Wells Fargo's arguments that customers wanted and benefited from the policies, and detailed evidence he said showed efforts to obscure the practices in statements and other materials. Wells Fargo's online banking system, for example, would display pending purchases in chronological order, “leading customers to believe that the processing would take place in that order.” “The supposed net benefit of high-to-low resequencing is utterly speculative,” he wrote. “Its bone-crushing multiplication of additional overdraft penalties, however, is categorically assured.” Alsup also criticized the bank for allowing overdraft purchases after accounts had been drained by offering a “shadow line of credit” that customers were unaware existed. The decision noted that the Federal Reserve has outlawed some of the practices detailed in the case, most notably debit card overdrafts permitted without customers agreeing to accept overdraft protection. Judge Alsup ordered Wells Fargo to stop posting transactions in high-to-low order by Nov. 30 and to reverse overdraft fees charged to customers from Nov. 15, 2004, to June 30, 2008, as a result of the policy. A study cited in the decision by a Wells Fargo witness put the restitution at “close to $203 million.” Wells Fargo spokeswoman Richele Messick said the bank is “disappointed” with the ruling. “We don't believe the ruling is in line with the facts of this case and we plan to appeal,” she said. Messick noted that Wells Fargo changed its policies earlier this year, and customers can no longer incur more than four overdraft charges in one day. Wells Fargo shares closed Wednesday trading down $1.47, or 5.3 percent, at $26.30, as the broader markets dropped sharply on economic concerns, with banks being particularly hard hit. The case, heard in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, is Gutierrez vs. Wells Fargo. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Eyes Lit Up’ During ‘Expendables,’ Sylvester Stallone Says

‘It’s one thing to run a state, but it’s another thing to get back to what you’re really known for,’ Sly tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone Photo: Eric Charbonneau/ Getty Images Toward the fiery conclusion of last year’s “Terminator Salvation,” as Christian Bale blasts his way through Skynet’s home base, slaying scores of red-eyed cyborgs, he meets an unlikely enemy: a young Arnold Schwarzenegger as the familiar T-800. Whatever gripes fans might have with McG’s take on the venerable sci-fi franchise — and there are many — the sight of Arnie digitally reconstructed to resemble his ’80s-era self was unambiguously cool. But the Governator didn’t actually step on set for the scene. Instead, McG employed some cutting-edge, “Benjamin Button”-style visual effects — as well as the blessing of the actor-turned-politician — to re-create the Schwarzenegger of old. Not until this weekend, when Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables” hits theaters, will the most powerful man in California make his official return to Hollywood. And what a reintroduction it is, as we see Arnold stride into a church in truly epic fashion. In fact, after working with him on the new flick, Sly is hoping his ’80s action pal sticks around Tinseltown after he leaves the governor’s mansion early next year. “If this works, I would love to get him in the next one,” Stallone told MTV News of a possible sequel. “I really think so. He’s been out of the limelight a long time, and I think this is the kind of film that would be a nice intro.” That might not be wishful thinking. Stallone witnessed firsthand how Schwarzenegger still gets pumped up about making movies — more than seven years since his last starring role. “I saw his eyes light up. It’s one thing to run a state, but it’s another thing to get back to what you’re really known for,” Stallone said. “Certain actors you’re never going to see come down the pike again, and he’s one of them.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Fall In Love All Over Again

Romantic clip for title track of pop star’s forthcoming album co-stars actor Josh Kloss. By James Montgomery Josh Kloss and Katy Perry in the “Teenage Dream” music video Photo: Eric Ford/Danny Mayer/ On Location News You’ve got to hand it to Katy Perry : she’s really hitting on all cylinders these days. “California Gurls,” the first single from her album Teenage Dream , was the official anthem of the first half of summer, a fun and flirty song that probably served as the soundtrack to your various beachfront flings. And now, she’s back with the album’s title track — and second single — which will undoubtedly serve as the soundtrack to one of those flings blossoming. She’s got you covered every step of the way … it’s sorta brilliant, really. Both “Teenage Dream” and its accompanying video are about falling madly in love, about losing your inhibitions and getting jelly-kneed by the mere thought of being near that certain someone. Sure, you may have snogged your fair share of guys or gals down the shore this summer (that’s what “California Gurls” was for), but now you’ve found the one that makes you feel all giddy inside, and you’re ready to let your guard down and go head-over-heels. “Dream” is all those gooey feelings turned into a pop song. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who fills it with gauzy, sunset-tinged scenery: a beach in the waning light, the rapidly darkening hills of California, the incandescent glow of a pool in the early evening. Much like the song itself, the entire clip feels like a wooshing, love-drunk dream. Perry frolics with a frequently shirtless hunk (actor Josh Kloss) and is giddy throughout. She brings her friends (including L.A. socialites Ana Calderon and DJ Skeet Skeet) along to share in the merriment, and they throw impromptu dance parties all over Southern California. It all possesses an unwound, unabashed glee — the kind of bliss that only comes when you first fall in love, when everything seems to be taken from a movie (or, in this case, an Abercrombie & Fitch billboard) and nothing seems impossible. In that regard, it fits the feel of the song perfectly. Perry always stays on message. There is no deviation. It’s ingenious, not to mention a little frightening. Welcome to your favorite song of the second half of 2010, the one you’ll fall in love with (and to). You are powerless to resist. What do you think of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”?
