Red Hot Chili Peppers Go Long And Hard At Hangout Fest

Band’s Saturday-night set was lively and loose, capping a day that also saw spirited sets from Mac Miller and Skrillex. By James Montgomery Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers performs at the 2012 Hangout Music Festival Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images GULF SHORES, Alabama — Having been at this for more than two decades now, the Red Hot Chili Peppers clearly know how to headline a fest: play the hits, thank the crowd, occasionally swat at a beach ball, exit stage right. Maybe work a few well-placed curse words in there too. These things tend to be the same. So it’s a testament to both their versatility and their dedication that the Chili Peppers’ Saturday-night set at the Hangout Festival was anything but by the numbers, as the band jammed long and hard, stretching songs to the breaking point (and beyond), much to the delight of the raucous, sun-baked crowd. Perhaps it was because their headlining slot kicked off just minutes after seasoned jam-meisters the String Cheese Incident finished their two-and-a-half hour set (which, for them, was basically just a warm-up), or maybe they were taking their cues from Friday night’s headliner, Jack White , but from the minute the Peps strode on stage, they were playing fast and loose. Drummer Chad Smith, bassist Flea and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer started things off with a reverb-heavy psych jam that only morphed into “The Monarchy of Roses” when frontman Anthony Kiedis bounded on stage, then kept that momentum rolling into “Can’t Stop,” with the trio trading solos while Kiedis nodded in time to the beat. There were, of course, more straightforward moments too: the Peppers tore through a string of hits, including “Dani California,” “Under The Bridge” and “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” and attacked songs like “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” and their version of “Higher Ground” with impassioned pounding. Flea was his usual non-sequitur self, spouting stuff like “Sweet Home Alabama, mother—-er!” and “Forgive your parents!” into the mic, and Kiedis was, as always, the warrior-shaman showman, posing and preening, always in motion (he and Flea also made the rather interesting decision to wear pants with one leg cut off above the knee). But there was a general, genial looseness throughout their two-hour set, showcasing Smith’s lock-step drumming, Flea’s precision playing and Klinghoffer’s wild, winding fretwork. At several points, they seemed to be making it up as they went along, gleefully turning a few stray notes into lengthy, twisting jams: Klinghoffer would summon a solo from his guitar, while Flea would flail and pound along, Smith and touring percussionist Mauro Refosco kicked off the band’s encore with a twisting back-and-forth exchange, and after blasting through “Give It Away,” the band closed their set with a lengthy, voluminous instrumental. The Peppers have always drawn from funk, and Flea’s dabblings in Jazz have paced them for nearly twenty years now, but on Saturday night, the improvisational nature of both were readily apparent. Rather than do the usual headlining set, the band wanted to just play. It seems to be a recurring theme of the Hangout fest … and it served as a perfect capper on a day that also saw lively and loose sets from the likes of Gogol Bordello, Mac Miller and Skrillex (who, in a bit of inspired scheduling, kicked off opposite Randy Newman). The Red Hot Chili Peppers breathed new life into time-tested favorites &#8212 “Suck My Kiss” was pounding and primal, “Californication” soared to new heights, “Soul to Squeeze” was sanguine and sweet — and appeared to have a blast whilst doing so. You can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but, if you bring them to the beach (and scheduled them after a jam band), well, you can certainly make them push things to the limit … with fantastic results. If this whole “world-famous rock band” thing doesn’t work out for RHCP, their Hangout set was proof that they’d make a killing on the jam circuit. Your move, String Cheese. Facebook IPO Could Smash Records, Spur New Tech Wave

MTV News takes you behind the scenes of Facebook in a 2011 documentary that explores the company’s unique non-corporate culture. By Gil Kaufman Mark Zuckerberg Photo: Tomohiro Ohsumi/Bloomberg/Getty Images It’s the biggest initial public offering since the late-1990’s heyday of Internet 1.0. Hell, it’s the biggest tech IPO ever. Everyone wants to get in on the long-awaited Facebook IPO, which is offering up more than 484 million shares that are expected to raise nearly $18.5 billion for the world’s most popular social networking site. By the time all is said and done, the bright idea hatched by co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in his college dorm room could turn his company into a $100 billion behemoth. Since launching as a campus-only network in 2004, the site has allowed more than 900 million users around the world to connect, post pictures and stories and keep circles of friends appraised on every move they make while fundamentally altering the way we spend our time, communicate and share our private lives. When MTV News visited the company’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters in 2011 for ” Diary of Facebook ,”, we took viewers inside the matrix to find out how its young employees keep the engine running and what fuels their passion. Among the revelations in the piece was an exploration of the unique FB phenomenon known “hack-a-thons,” during which Zuckerberg said some of the site’s best ideas are generated. “Hack-a-thons are this awesome part of our culture,” Zuckerberg said of the 24-hour marathons of coding and brainstorming. “Every month or two, everyone stays up all night just experimenting with things and building things quickly. And the only rule is that you’re not allowed to work on the same thing that your day job is.” It’s that kind of irreverence and corporate rule-ditching energy — those who can’t code join in by cooking, juggling or drawing to stay energized — that has pushed the Facebook IPO from a financial and tech story to a metaphor for our entrepreneurial times. With the college job market for new grads looking the best it has since the start of the recession in 2007 and tech start-ups blossoming like it’s 1998 all over again, the Los Angeles Times wrote that the Facebook heat could help spark a renaissance of Internet heat. “Wealth has trickled down to employees and investors who cashed in their shares ahead of the IPO on private exchanges”, the paper reported. “Others are spending in advance of their big payday, fueling an economy that’s already humming thanks to the Bay Area’s thriving technology sector.” Facebook’s stock offering could mint dozens, if not hundreds of new millionaires. And it’s a fair bet that those suddenly-flush geeks could go on to form new companies that will be on the lookout for fresh young faces (and minds) to help them, yes, become the next Facebook. So, get your r

In the mirror next to her, she’s dolled up in a sparkling red costume and bright blue hair, singing into a candy-cane microphone. “Be yourself and you can be anything,” the poster reads. The big reveal came with a bit of a contest. The first 20 people who were able to put the full poster together out of the puzzle pieces she’d released and tweet a photo to @KatyPerry using #KP3D will be picked to have a chance to see their Twitter handles featured in the closing credits of the colorful 3-D flick. The July 5 release was directed by Magical Elves’ Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, who also served as producers on Justin Bieber’s successful “Never Say Never” concert movie. In a trailer released in early April , fans got a taste of what they would see and hear in the flick, including Perry’s candid confessions about her religious childhood and her split from Russell Brand. MTV News spoke to Perry in March about the film, and she explained just what fans will see in it. “It’s closing the chapter on [my album] Teenage Dream, but it’s giving you such an inside perspective,” Perry said. “This film, you’re going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you’re going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.” The movie was filmed during her California Dreams trek. “That tour was so life-changing to me. I learned so much, I went through so much along the way,” Perry said. “I’m not necessarily trying to prove anything to anyone, but not only will people really hands-down know me after they see this film, but you’ll see me as the Dorothy wearing the red ruby slipper and at the end of it all I’m the [Wizard of] Oz as well.” Related Videos MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Related Artists Katy Perry

‘American Idol’ Race To Finale: What Should They Sing?

MTV News ‘Idol’ experts share their choices for Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Phillips Phillips. By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips on “American Idol” Photo: FOX The “American Idol” season 11 top three have a lot to prove as we head into Wednesday night’s (May 16) second-to-last lap. Likely winner Phillip Phillips has skated through virtually unscathed by pretty much doing a season-long homage to Dave Matthews, while Joshua Ledet has thrilled us with his gritty soul shouting but failed to show much personality along the way (unless you count that one week he wore a flower in his lapel). And Jessica Sanchez? Well, the 16-year-old definitely has powerful pipes and is a diva in the waiting, but she’s still not quite ready for prime time. All three will be tested this week when they have to sing three songs: a judges’ choice, a tune picked by mentor Jimmy Iovine and, finally, one of their own choosing. Though the track record of MTV News’ resident “Idol” experts has been a bit spotty to date (OK, James, we get it, you have gotten it right four more times than Gil), that hasn’t stopped Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery from posting their last set of secret-ballot picks before next week’s finale. Phillip Phillips He threw us for a curve last week when he went for Damien Rice’s “Volcano,” and he’s already done a DMB cover, so chances are, Phil will steer clear of anything too obvious. I suspect the judges will pick something firmly in his wheelhouse, though, maybe Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones.” Iovine has a deep understanding of music and knows that the girls want their hearts melted, so he might opt for something in the classic-rock mode like the Allman Brothers’ “Melissa.” After the Rice-bomb last week, it’s anyone’s guess what P-Phunk will choose, so, what the hell, let’s go with David Gray’s appropriately vanilla 2000 breakthrough smash “Babylon.” — Kaufman It’s nice of him to take time off from his “Idol” crown fittings (Scotty McCreery was a 7 and three-eighths, BTW) to grace us with his presence this week. I suspect he’ll reward us with more of the same anyway. The judges should just have him do a medley of the past four champs’ singles — including Lee DeWyze’s latest, “Can I Borrow, Like, Five Dollars?” — just to let America realize what they’ve done, but, of course, they won’t. Instead, I’ll say they stick him with one of Steven Tyler’s songs; maybe they have him do “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”? As for Iovine’s pick, I’m thinking he gives him Santana and Rob Thomas’ “Smooth,” because Jimmy’s mad old, or maybe John Mayer’s “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” since it will make his female fanbase spontaneously combust. And as for his personal pick? Dude, he’s already gone deep-cut twice (with DMB and Rice), so who’s to say he doesn’t just cover Phish’s “Icarus” and call it a day. Regardless, the judges will praise his “uniqueness.” — Montgomery Jessica Sanchez It’s gonna be an uphill battle for JSanch to shimmy her way into the finale. Aside from the curse of near-elimination and the fact that a girl hasn’t won since season six, she’s been somewhat erratic lately and her go-to big ballads have landed as often as her uptempos have flopped. The judges want to see her shine, so they will surely gift her with a big, fat ballad along the lines of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love.” Jimmy knows she needs to show she can be a contemporary star, which is why he’ll opt for Rihanna’s “California King Bed.” As for what BeBe will pick for herself, well, she’s proven a tough one to nail down. She’s already hit on Whitney, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonc

‘Idol’ Finalist Jessica Sanchez Gets Props From Philippine President

‘American Idol’ hopefuls Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips have gotten A-List support from Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Julianne Hough. By Gil Kaufman Jessica Sanchez on “American Idol” Photo: FOX U.S. presidents have typically stayed out of the “who is going to win ‘American Idol’ ” fray in the past in order to avoid upsetting any voting blocs. But that doesn’t mean that foreign dignitaries can’t offer up their two cents. That might explain why on the eve of the penultimate performance night on “Idol,” the Associated Press reported that Philippine president Benigno Aquino III has wholeheartedly endorsed his choice for next week’s finale: Jessica Sanchez. “Hopefully, she really reaches the top,” Aquino said of the 16-year-old top three finalists from Chula Vista, California, who is of Filipino and Latin heritage. The President isn’t the only one who has co-signed the pixie-size diva. She’s gotten shout-outs and love from everyone from “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine and his music industry pal Tommy Mottola to former “Idol” champ Kris Allen. Onetime contestants Jennifer Hudson and Haley Reinhart, as well as singers Billy Joel, Beyonc

Wiz Khalifa, Nas, Bone Thugs Lead Rock The Bells Lineup

Lupe Fiasco tweets that he’s not on this year’s bill, despite an announcement to the contrary. By Felicia Morris Wiz Khalifa Photo: Dana Nalbandian/ Getty Images Hip-hop’s premier music festival is back. On Tuesday, Guerilla Union held a press conference to reveal its lineup of hip-hop all-stars for Rock the Bells 2012. Freestyler extraordinaire Supernatural delivered the list of performers one-by-one with an impromptu rap, rattling off names like Wiz Khalifa , Kid Cudi, Nas , J. Cole and Mac Miller, as well as veteran acts like Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Lupe Fiasco’s name also appears on the festival’s flyer, but on Wednesday morning (May 16), the Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that despite what was printed, he would not be in attendance this year. “Not doing Rock The Bellz…thats a typo fam and friends…,” he wrote . For the first time in nine years, Rock the Bells will expand its daylong festival to two days. The first show will take place August 18 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California. Last year’s three-stage setup forced fans to choose between their favorite acts, who would often perform simultaneously. “We had quite a few complaints about Mobb Deep fans having to choose between Mobb Deep and Nas,” Guerilla Union boss Chang Weisberg said as an example. “We tried to deliver three stages, but it didn’t work out. So the correction? Two stages, two days, one event.” RTB will hit the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, on August 25 and 26 and then the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, on September 1 and 2. Coincidentally, the East Coast show falls on the very same weekend as Jay-Z’s recently announced Made in America multi-genre music festival in Philadelphia. Hov promises close to 30 eclectic acts in the fields of rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance music. The Made in America lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but already, the RTB bill is ripe with diverse rap talent. 2 Chainz, Tyga, Kendrick Lamar, Slick Rick, E-40, Too Short and A$AP Rocky will all be in attendance. The announcement event wrapped up with performances by DJ Quik and Bone Thugs, who took the stage and rocked a few of their many classics, leaving fans ready for the main course this summer. Fans should check RockTheBells.net for venue and ticket information. Related Videos Back To The ‘Burgh With Mac Miller And Wiz Khalifa Related Artists Nas Wiz Khalifa

John Travolta’s Difficult Week: Another Sexual Harassment Claim

Actor’s lawyer vehemently denies all three claims that have been made so far. By Gil Kaufman John Travolta Photo: Getty Images After two anonymous male masseurs came forward with claims alleging that John Travolta assaulted and sexually harassed them during rub downs, another man has come forward with a similar story. The third alleged victim, the first to be publicly named, is Chilean cruise ship employee Fabian Zanzi, who, according to reports, says that Travolta accosted him in 2009 while he was working as a VIP liaison on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Zanzi told ABC.es that Travolta offered him $12,000 to have sex, but that he spurned the “Pulp Fiction” star’s advances. “He hugged me and asked me to do a massage,” Zanzi said. The cruise ship worker has reportedly filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Travolta, but no evidence of that suit had emerged at press time. The latest allegation capped a difficult week for the married star, who has long battled allegations that he is gay. The two anonymous masseurs filed a $2 million civil lawsuit
against Travolta earlier in the week, which the actor’s lawyer tagged as “a complete fiction and fabrication.” Speaking on Travolta’s behalf, attorney Marty Singer said, “None of the events claimed in the suit ever occurred. The plaintiff, who refuses to give their name, knows that the suit is a baseless lie. It is for that reason that the plaintiff hasn’t been identified with a name even though it is required to do so.” Singer went on to say that Travolta, 58, was not in California on the date when the first claimant — who has since said he got the date wrong — said the “Hairspray” actor made sexual advances towards him during a massage. On Friday (May 11), Singer also denied the claims by Zanzi, accusing him of “hopping on the bandwagon” in search of “his 15 minutes of fame.” “This individual is simply hopping on the bandwagon to get his 15 minutes of fame by coming up with a story for the first time with something that supposedly happened over three years ago,” Singer told the New York Daily News . “Nobody has ever heard from this guy before. No lawyer has contacted us.” Radar Online reported that the Atlanta resort where the second John Doe accuser claims Travolta made sexual advances has been asked to preserve the surveillance tape taken during that time in the event that it becomes evidence in the lawsuit. Quoting an unidentified source close to the case, the gossip site reported, “The hotel has been notified by the masseur’s attorney to preserve the surveillance video of the time when Travolta stayed there … The surveillance video will be crucial evidence in the case because it shows Travolta going to the spa the next day after it is claimed the incident occurred, looking for the masseur, because he wanted to see him again, which is all detailed in the lawsuit. Travolta was told the masseur wasn’t available and he left. The masseur was extremely upset when he left Travolta’s room, which would have been captured on the camera in the hallway as well.” The 14-page suit filed by the first alleged victim last Friday in California’s U.S. District Court, charges Travolta with assault, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that among other salacious activities, Travolta exposed himself and groped the masseur despite protests during a massage performed in Los Angeles in January 2011.

Gavin Smith, Hollywood Executive, Reported Missing

Hollywood film executive Gavin Smith is reportedly missing, and the surprising details – or lack thereof – about the family man’s disappearance have left his wife, kids and colleagues searching for answers. Smith was staying at a friend’s house and drove off, without a word, in his black Mercedes around 10 p.m. one night last week. He never came back . The 57-year-old was reported missing by his wife Wednesday when he failed to pick up his son to take him to school and then did not call into work. Smith’s wife, kids, and sister told ABC News that the former UCLA basketball star and 20th Century Fox movie exec would never abandon his family. “He would never do that. He’s a great father. My dad had no reason to leave,” said Evan Smith, Gavin’s eldest son and a basketball player at USC. The family would not say why Smith, an 18-year veteran in the movie industry, was staying with a family friend in Oak Park, Calif., Tuesday night. He had reportedly returned earlier that that day from a movie convention in Las Vegas and was supposed to stay the night there, but the family said it was unusual that he left that home at 10 p.m. without warning. “They’d already gone to bed,” Lisa Smith said. “So, he was still downstairs watching TV when our friend went to bed. He was going to bed shortly.” The Smiths told ABC News that Gavin Smith’s cell phone charger, shaving kit, and other belongings were all still at the friend’s house. He was last seen in purple workout pants belonging to his teenage son, which the family says is a sign he had no intention of going out in public. “That’s what he was wearing, you know? It doesn’t sound like he was going anywhere, you know?” Evan Smith said. Lisa Smith said she last spoke to her husband Tuesday during the day to arrange plans for Wednesday morning for him to come pick up his son and take him to school. Lisa was busy taking care of her mother, who is battling cancer. “As soon as I heard that he had not picked up Austin from school, that’s when I said, ‘There has to be something wrong.’ What that is, I don’t know. I don’t know,” said Tara Addeo, Smith’s sister. The family has not been able to track down Smith through cell phone or credit card use or locate his car. They say he had no known enemies. “We know someone knows something. There’s no doubt that someone knows something,” Lisa Smith said. “He’s so recognizable, and he was in purple pants,” Addeo added. Los Angeles County Sheriff Public Information Officer Steve Whitmore told ABC News it’s a missing-person case, and asked the public for tips. Authorities say he was driving a black 2000 Mercedes-Benz 420E with a storage rack on the roof, tinted windows and a California license plate 6EKT044.
