That would be Universal Studios Home Entertainment , which is finally bringing the Mr. Skin-approved comedy classic to Blu-Ray August 9th. Fast Times was released in the now-defunct HD DVD format back in early 2008, just before Blu-Ray won out in the Great HD Format Wars of the late 2000s. Now the Blu-Ray comes loaded (pun, as always, intended) with audio commentary from director Amy Heckerling and writer Cameron Crowe , the documentary “Reliving Our Fast Times at Ridgemont High” featuring the cast and crew reminiscing about their (s)experiences on set, and the featurette “The Music of Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” The Blu-Ray edition hits stores, brick-and-mortar and online alike, August 9, and is available for pre-order on Amazon.com now. We’re desperately in need of some hard-R laughs, a few gross-out moments that make us cringe, and the reminder that as crazy as we might be, we’re not nearly as loco as the folks we’re watching onscreen. Thus, we say thanks to “Bad Teacher” as it floats, on a comedic cloud of profanity and penis jokes, into theaters. Cameron Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey, an educator less concerned with math lessons than she is in smoking pot and calculating her way into marriage with any filthy-rich doofus. She meets the perfect mark in Justin Timberlake’s Scott Delacorte, a substitute teacher and a guy so freaking nice there’s got be something wrong with him. And then we have Jason Segel’s sly gym teacher; even though he’s got the hots for Halsey, his paycheck doesn’t have nearly enough digits to entice the leggy blonde. But all this is just the setup. The punch comes in a series of outlandish events that, if we were to reveal them here, would just spoil the fun. What we can do is tell you everything you need to know about “Bad Teacher” before hitting the multiplex this weekend. That’s where our cheat sheet comes into play. Getting Ready for Class News of the film, penned by “Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, broke in December of 2009. Diaz had signed on , but the rest of the cast had yet to be filled out. That changed a few months later, when Timberlake and Segel hopped aboard . Though Diaz had formerly dated JT, the actress had no qualms about stepping in front of the camera with him. “He’s the best person for the job. He’s going to be hilarious,” she said. “He’s clearly a very talented comedian; look at his ‘Saturday Night Live’ [skits]. He’s fantastic. He’s going to be so great.” School’s in Session Filming kicked off in March. Nearly a year later, a truly filthy red-band trailer popped up online, giving us a very clear idea of how truly terrible a teacher Diaz would be: “Are you f—ing kidding me?” she writes on a student’s test. By the end of it, you’re like, ‘What is up with that dude?’ It’s hilarious.” The Final Exam As part of our Summer Movie Preview Week, we debuted an exclusive photo of Diaz getting ready for a fundraising car wash unlike any that you might recall from your school days and also sat down for a chat with the woman herself. “She’s miserable. She’s not happy with her world, and she doesn’t pretend that she is,” Diaz said of her character. “Her pain is real. She’s living a very painful existence, so there’s no humor to her in this.” Sure, she’s a woman in pain. But there’s also something liberating about the way she just doesn’t give a hoot about anything. “I think that’s why people love Elizabeth,” Diaz told us at the film’s premiere in New York City. “It’s because everyone wants to be her, even for an hour, maybe a day. If you get away with a week — oh my gosh! I got to play her for six weeks. So yeah, it was a lot of fun.” “The first 30 pages, I’m like, ‘I am not playing this. There is no way I can play this character. There [are] no redeeming qualities to this character,’ ” she recalled of the script in an earlier chat. “And by the end of it, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is genius! ‘Transformers’ star says he ended up directing Cudi’s ‘Maniac’ and ‘Marijuana’ videos because of mutual friend Cage. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LaBeouf Photo: MTV News From the outside looking in, the friendship and working partnership that actor Shia LaBeouf and rapper Kid Cudi have established recently seems only slightly unlikely. However, upon closer examination of Cudi’s track record in working with Hollywood types, and LaBeouf’s relationship with “Maniac” featured performer Cage, their collaborations on two of Cudi’s videos, “Maniac” and “Marijuana,” isn’t that unexpected. When MTV News caught up with LaBeouf recently as he promoted “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” we asked the aspiring director how the Cudi/Cage/LaBeouf magic began with music, and how it ended with a trip to Amsterdam’s infamous Cannabis Cup. “[Cage] is one of my good friends. Cage, Chris Palko, and I had been trying to make a movie about him for a while,” LaBeouf explained. “Cudi hit [Cage] up and did a song with him. Cage sent me the song, called ‘Maniac,’ so initially, we started prepping this video, which is really like a short horror movie that I made that comes out on Halloween,” he said. “In the interim, while we were finishing up the effects on it, [Cudi] told me he was going to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup.” LaBeouf jumped at the chance to continue working with Cudi, and joked that a trip to the legendary land where cannabis is legal was too good to pass up. “It’s as big as Spielberg,” he said with a laugh. “It is for a 25-year-old male who has all these crazy fantasies about Amsterdam, which every male my age has, there’s that college trip you always want to take,” he admitted. “And to do that with Cudi when he’s a judge, and I get to roll with him with my 8mm camera [like] an ‘Easy Rider’ documentarian, I felt like Cameron Crowe or something.” Despite all the references to the drug, that trip and the clip that came from it are Cudi’s send-off to smoking weed. “It was almost like an R.I.P. video to my whole smoking career,” Cudi told MTV News of the “Marijuana” clip earlier this month. Of all the current Saturday Night Live cast members, Fred Armisen seems like the least likely to spin-off one of his Studio 8H characters for the box office. Not necessarily because he hasn’t been given the opportunity — after Will Forte’s disastrous MacGruber though, who could blame movie studios for not trying? — but because Armisen, who Lorne Michaels described as “an artist, not a careerist,” seems genuinely content to be part of Saturday Night Live ‘s ensemble cast. So it is a little surprising to see that after nine seasons with the show, the self-described “short-sighted” actor has gone ahead and created a new sketch comedy series for the IFC called Portlandia , which co-stars Sleater-Kinney founder Carrie Brownstein.
