London Lost £100m In Volcano Ash Flight Ban

The Icelandic volcanic ash cloud has caused UK airspace to close and this resulted to a lost tourist spending of more than £100m. The London mayor said each day about 30,000 overseas visitors arrive by air at this time of year, spending £17m in total. The last week’s flight ban had caused the city about £102m. Tourism is massively significant for jobs and growth in the capital. Hotel occupancy has dropped for about 25 percent, theaters, restaurants and shops also have experienced a fall in visitors. Some companies suffered the reduced footfall on London’s streets and others were facing disappointed customers, heavy backlogs and costly penalties from being unable to access airfreight services to deliver the three million items sent by companies every day. About more than 95,000 flights were cancelled all around Europe throughout the 6 days of disruption. According to the Mayor of London Boris John, “the coming out of the economic downturn, the last thing the capital’s economy needed was all air traffic in and out of the city grounded for a week.” London Lost £100m In Volcano Ash Flight Ban is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Thai troops fire on protesters: Raw Video

French broadcaster France 24 has aired footage of what it says are Thai soldiers firing at crowds during violent clashes that took place on Saturday, April 10 in which a dozen people lost their lives. France 24 said the footage contradicted the Thai government's position that soldiers only fired live rounds into the air during the clashes. The video, apparently shot from behind military lines, shows Thai soliders clashing with protesters. During that episode repeated gunshots are heard, but their origin cannot be determined. A grenade then explodes, injuring the France 24 cameraman and killing seven soldiers and wounding a colonel, the broadcaster said. Thai forces are then seen evacuating wounded soldiers in vans and on foot. The video then shows a long view down a street with a crowd at he end. A total of 21 people died and 800 people were injured in a weekend of violent protests by anti-government protesters. added by: ctv

Riots in Kyrgyzstan: Raw Video

Bishkek, the capital of central Asian nation Kyrgystan, is in the midst of a revolution on its streets. Riot police fought with demonstrators on Wednesday in clashes that killed at least five. Late in the day, opposition leaders said they had taken control of the country. Rumors placed the country's President in hiding on the American airbase Manas. Political unrest has gripped Kyrgyzstan, an impoverished former Soviet republic, since early March, threatening a spillover of violence into the fragile, mainly Muslim region. The clashes followed Tuesday's riot in the town of Talas, where protesters demanding the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev seized a local government office and took a regional governor hostage for several hours. added by: ctv
