Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Video: Frame By Frame

Director Marc Klasfeld provides insight into the kitschy homage to ’80s teen comedies. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Katy Perry in her “Last Friday Night” video Photo: Capitol Records In Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” video , we see what happens when nerdy girl Kathy Beth Terry (Perry) gets a makeover and becomes the life of the party. Recently, director Marc Klasfeld sat down with MTV News and took us through his neon-colored tribute to ’80s teen movies, frame by frame. “The storyline is definitely ’16 Candles’ and John Hughes-influenced,” Klasfeld said. “And all those great ’80s high school movies.” The celebrity cameos come fast and don’t stop, beginning with “Glee” star Darren Criss, who drops in on Kathy’s bedroom to thank her for the “best party ever” the morning after. “Darren, he was great,” Klasfeld said. “He was in there for like an hour. He came in, nailed it, did his thing.” Criss wasn’t the only one who pumped out great work. “There’s Katy! One thing about her, she really took on this role, she dove right into it and did everything that was asked and a lot more,” he recalled. “There’s a lot of outtakes that we actually couldn’t show. She had a lot of fun with it.” “Friday” singer Rebecca Black also appeared in the video, as Kathy Beth Terry’s sort of Fairy Godmother. “Rebecca was great all the way through. She was really excited, and I think she looks great,” he said. “She looks like a Disney TV star in this, so who knows what’s next for Rebecca?” Black and Perry had to make fast friends when it came to the makeover scene. “This was a fun scene. [Rebecca and Katy] kind of first met in this scene,” he said. “We actually didn’t use wax [on Katy]. I think that was honey. She actually doesn’t have hair there to wax, but suspension of disbelief, as they say. And there’s her headgear off, and here she comes: the made-over Kathy Beth.” Once made over, Kathy is joins in on a big game of “Just Dance,” the kind of product placement Klasfeld said he tried to fit seamlessly into the clip. “It wasn’t this crass cut away to a phone or to a camera, and it kind of fit in with the theme of the video.” The video features a number of other cameos including Kenny G, Hanson and “Glee” star Kevin McHale, but perhaps none were as funny as the appearance at the end by ’80s icons, Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. “They were one of our one of our great cameos we had in the video, and we just roll with it here,” he said. “This was just pure ad lib.” Just when fans think the video is over, the credit roll provides a little something extra. “Obviously a lot of movies do this [credit blooper reel], but my influence for it was [1981 movie] ‘Cannonball Run’ because ‘Cannonball Run’ always had these great outtakes that went on forever,” he said. “We had so many outtakes, we could have let it go on for 14 minutes, but we had to stop at some point.” Related Videos Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’: Frame By Frame MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Gets Teen-Party Makeover From Rebecca Black

Hanson, Kenny G and ‘Glee’ stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale also guest-star in teen-movie homage. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her “Last Friday Night” video Photo: Capitol Records What happened “Last Friday Night” ? Katy Perry’s alter ego Kathy Beth Terry is trying to figure that out. In the just premiered video , directed by Marc Klasfeld, Perry pays homage to the teen flicks of the ’80s, with the help of quite a few famous friends. In the midst of a rousing game of sudoku, the brace-faced, headgear-wearing, nerdy Kathy seems initially mad at the house party going on outside. So, what’s a girl to do? Well, try to reason with the revelers and get them to stop, obviously. But those revelers happen to include “Friday” singer Rebecca Black, house band Hanson, with an assist from Kathy Beth Terry ‘s crazy uncle Kenny G, and “Glee” stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale, the latter of whom has a mad, fantasy-tinged crush on Kathy. And soon, rather than put an end to the festivities, she’s drawn into the party, which includes the tropes from movies like “She’s All That,” “Can’t Hardly Wait” and about five flicks by John Hughes. After Black gives Perry a makeover, complete with spandex, big hair and funky earrings, she’s hanging with all of the cool kids. She’s drinking, dancing, vomiting and falling over drunk, while the song’s lyrics talk about regretting the Friday-night actions that are inevitably documented and spread online. And, of course, it all comes back to Saturday morning, when a hungover Kathy is both pleased and shocked by what happened the night before, as her passed-out guests and Facebook page remind her of it all. Her parents arrive on the scene, but they don’t seem too angry at her party-girl antics, maybe because they’re played by Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. The only real casualty of the party? Kathy’s solar system model! Related Artists Katy Perry

Kanye’s Birthday And His 8 Gaudy Gifts [PHOTOS]

Here is the original post:

Today is Kanye West’s 34th birthday! Now we all know that Mr. West loves to adorn himself with the finer things in life. The exclusive items that he purchases on a day-to-day basis would suffice for the average person’s birthday, Christmas and anniversary presents combined … for life! So in celebration of Yeezy’s birthday, June 8, why not recap eight of the most ridiculously gaudy gifts that he has presented to himself? After all, he probably thinks that his gifts are the best anyway! FACT OF THE DAY: Kanye West Almost Signed With Capitol Records When Kanye feels like having Indian curry and fish for lunch, he flies it (and the head chef) in from the UK to New York for $4,000. Visiting Egypt or the King Tut exhibition isn’t enough; Kanye needs the $300,000 gold Horus chain and pyramids ring to “set it off right.” Mirrors are cool, but Kanye would prefer to look at a bejeweled image of himself in his $180,000 Tiret watch. Kanye thought it was a good idea to permanently replace his bottom teeth with gold and diamonds. From what he tells Ellen DeGeneres, toothpaste is the perfect jewelry cleanser anyhow! Kanye doesn’t like to ride in style… he rides above style! Kanye purchased a $1.7 million secret agent SLR Mercedesz-Benz McLaren. Kanye makes his wildest dreams reality—he films “Runaway,” featuring a nude Phoenix, ballerinas, and a huge Michael Jackson float. It makes perfect sense that Kanye wanted his $7 million LA home to be as smart and vivid as himself. His home is run by an elaborate computer matrix. Who likes vixens with big mouths? not Kanye. He paid Amber Rose a seven-figure “silence fee” to keep quiet about their relationship. Did You Know Nicki Minaj Plays The Clarinet? See The Video Here! Wanna Party with Charlie Sheen?

Calling all Warlocks: we know when and where you can party with Charlie Sheen. Following his live show in NYC on April 8, the actor will host a shindig in Carlstadt, New Jersey, a town with a population of around 6,000 that typically employs three police officers per shift. But, as TMZ reports , the police department will be extra careful with the gathering at Dragonfly nightclub. At least 10 officers will be brought in to handle crowd and traffic control. Combing this news with the latest security fears from Denise Richards, at least Sheen’s antics are resulting in extra work around the country. Still, there has to be a safer, less insane way to create jobs, doesn’t there? Meanwhile, if you wish to see Sheen on TV and not in person, circle April 12 on your calendar. On that date, the star will play a role on Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza . It airs on the Game Show Network and the appearance dates back to January, when Charlie joined the show’s cast on stage for a performance at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. In his sketch, Sheen separates the men from “the trolls”

Katy Perry Channels Lady Gaga For "E.T."

Katy Perry’s new music video is for her song “E.T.” But rather than Steven Spielberg’s alien creation of decades past, she’s channeling Lady Gaga and Avatar. Or so it would appear in these promotional pics released by her label , Capitol, in advance of the video. Maybe with a little David Bowie thrown in there as well? Click on the Katy Perry pictures below to enlarge some of her various looks for the video. Whatever she’s going for, her style is out of this world (booo!) … [Photos: Capitol Records]

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Ends Eminem’s Chart Run

Fantasia’s Back to Me lands at #2, pushing Em’s Recovery to #3 on Billboard 200 albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Photo: Capitol Records All good things must come to an end and it looks like Katy Perry might be the one to stop Eminem ‘s record-setting run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. As expected, Perry’s Teenage Dream will block Eminem from lodging his eighth week at #1 on next week’s Billboard chart by selling 192,000 copies of her second official major label album, or more than four times as many as her first disc, One of the Boys, sold (47,000) in its first week two years ago. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Perry isn’t the only one who bested Eminem. Former “American Idol” winner Fantasia bounces back from a dark personal period that included a recent suicide attempt by landing at #2 with Back to Me on sales of 117,000, which pushes Em’s Recovery down to its lowest chart position to date, #3, on sales of 98,000. There are some other newcomers in the top 10, though, including Usher , whose Versus mini-album comes in at #4 (46,000), followed by country rock act Little Big Town ‘s The Reason Why (42,000), the Randy Rogers Band ‘s Burning the Day (#8, 29,000) and hard rockers the Devil Wears Prada , whose Zombie EP sneaks in at #10 thanks to just under 25,000 units shifted. The rest of the top 10: Kem , Intimacy (#6, 30,000); Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#7, 29,000); and Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#9, 28,000). After a nice run in the top 10 for three weeks, the Arcade Fire ‘s Suburbs falls nine spots to #16 (21,000) as they pass the 250,000 mark, while Usher’s five-month-old Raymond v. Raymond disc has a nice resurgence thanks to his new deluxe edition with seven new songs and a remix, surging up 12 spots to #19 as sales pick up by 57 percent to 20,000. Beloved indie folkie Sufjan Stevens has a strong showing at #27 with All Delighted People (15,000), as do college rock faves Ra Ra Riot , whose Orchard lands at #36 (10,000). Though his single “Cooler Than Me” has lit up the charts all summer, Mike Posner ‘s major label debut, 31 Minutes to Takeoff , has slid steadily down the chart since its debut two weeks ago, falling another 26 spots to #72 as sales dip to less than 6,000. The news is the same on the iTunes singles and albums charts as Perry took over the pole position on both with the album and the title track single. Em hangs in at #2 on the album tally, followed by the Rogers Band, Fantasia, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Usher’s Versus, Stevens, Never Shout Never’s Harmony, LaMontagne, and the Devil Wears Prada. Though iTunes does not divulge sales data, it was a good week for Perry, as her single led a group that was relatively unchanged from the week before, with Taio Cruz at #2 with “Dynamite,” followed by Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Enrique Iglesias’ fist-pumping anthem “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” B.o.B’s “Magic,” Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” and newcomer Kid Cudi with the Kanye collabo “Erase Me.” Perry should be able to retain her perch next week, as the new faces in the crowd include the latest from Disturbed , the Goo Goo Dolls , Fabolous , Papa Roach and Lyfe Jennings . Faith Evans Arrested On Suspicion Of Drunken Driving

The singer was reportedly pulled over Saturday night in Los Angeles. By Mawuse Ziegbe Faith Evans Photo: Tiffany Rose/ WireImage Faith Evans was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving, according to the Los Angeles Times. Evans was taken into police custody at 10:40 p.m. at a checkpoint near Marina del Rey, Los Angeles Police Department’s Officer Cleon Joseph told the Times. The Associated Press reports Evans’ car was impounded and she was released on bail the following morning. The incident is not the singer’s first brush with the law. In 2004, Evans and her husband, Todd Russaw, were arrested in Atlanta on drug possession charges. Evans evaded jail time by entering a pretrial drug-abuse intervention program. She referenced the drama in her 2005 single “Again.” “In ATL, I caught a case/ And the media tried to say, I had a habit/ I couldn’t manage, and I’m throwing my life away,” Evans belts on the midtempo track. Evans first hit the scene as a signee to Diddy’s Bad Boy label and went on to pump out R&B hits such as “Love Like This” and “You Gets No Love.” Evans also married fellow Bad Boy artist Notorious B.I.G. and won a 1997 Grammy, along with Diddy and 112, for the Biggie-tribute song “I’ll Be Missing You,” in the wake of the iconic MC’s death. After parting ways with her longtime label and releasing the 2005 album The First Lady on Capitol Records, the singer took a break from the fame game to focus on her family. At the 2009 premiere of “Notorious,” the biopic about her late husband’s rise to hip-hop prominence, Evans told MTV News that while she didn’t have a record contract, she was looking to return to music. “I’ve been taking a lot of meetings, and I’ve been enjoying my freedom, not being tied down to anything other than my family. I’m ready to record again,” Evans said. “I’ve been hesitant to get into any type of record-deal situation. The offers have been coming in. Through the process of elimination, I’ll pick the one that’s right for me.” Related Artists Faith Evans

Katy Perry Had To Escape L.A. To Write ‘Teenage Dream’

‘Everybody climbing on top of each other to get to that next step on the ladder … sometimes L.A. can get exhausting,’ Perry says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Photo: Capitol Records Katy Perry decided to embrace her inner teenage girl when she sat down to write the title track from her forthcoming Teenage Dream album, out Tuesday. And she felt the only place she could get in touch with those warm, fuzzy feelings was her hometown of Santa Barbara, California. The song, which she co-wrote with and was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco, recalls a simpler time when love felt like the first time. “Well, going to Santa Barbara, which isn’t very far from L.A., it was just like it brought me back home and it took me out of this fast-paced L.A.,” she told MTV News. “Everybody climbing on top of each other to get to that next step on the ladder … sometimes L.A. can get exhausting.” In fact, it was that song that dictated how the entire album would play out. “I wanted to call it Teenage Dream because, really, there’s a song on the record … I wrote that song in Santa Barbara and it was a really pure moment for me because that’s where I’m from. And it was where I started my creative juices, and it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling like everyone remembers what their teenage dreams were,” she said. “All the girls that were on your poster walls … and I want to continue to be one of those … teenage wet dreams.” The track, however, wasn’t all that easy to get right. “I’m in the studio fighting with them to change the melody, or I’m fighting for the best lyric at all times,” she told Billboard earlier this year. “I think we rewrote ‘Teenage Dream’ five times for 10 days straight. On the last day, I was so happy to finally get somewhere that we all agreed on.” Perry said that there is a bottom line to the euphoria of the track. “That song is kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. … It’s intense being in love and being a teenager. That’s what ‘Teenage Dream’ is about.” Can you hear Katy’s teenage angst in the song? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Sneak Preview

Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is ‘Infectious,’ Brian Wilson Says

‘I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag,’ the Beach Boys’ co-founder says. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in her music video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records In 1965, the Beach Boys released “California Girls,” a song that would not only become one of their biggest hits, but one of the most influential rock tunes of all time too. Forty-five years later, Katy Perry dropped “California Gurls,” a song that has quickly become one of her biggest hits , but still has a ways to go in the legacy department. It may very well be on its way — at least according to legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, who, along with Mike Love, wrote the original “Girls” back in the day. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times ‘ Pop & Hiss blog , he admitted to being a fan of the song — and a little bit flattered by Perry’s updated homage. “I love her vocal. … She sounds very clear and energetic,” he said in a statement issued by his manager. “The melody is infectious, and I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag. I wish them well with this cut.” Of course, as Pop & Hiss points out, Perry and Snoop probably don’t need Wilson’s well-wishes (though they no doubt appreciate them). After all, “Gurls” is currently spending its sixth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — it also tops the brand-new Songs of the Summer chart too — and has already sold more than 2.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. So far, Perry has remained mum on Wilson’s praise (she’s basically been tweeting about “Inception” nonstop), and a spokesperson for her label, Capitol, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Gummi Bears Are ‘Rude, Crude Imitations,’ Haribo Says

‘We were as shocked as Katy Perry when we saw that these were not Haribo Goldbears but poor imitations,’ rep says. By Kara Warner with Jem Aswad Gummi Bears in Katy Perry’s video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records The badly behaving Gummi Bears featured in Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video have manufacturers of the candy saying: Those aren’t our bears! Despite the video’s cheery feel, it features two otherwise friendly-looking, oversized Gummi Bears greeting Perry not with hugs and a hello, but with a rude hand gesture: The offending bear in question apparently gives the singer the finger early in the clip. Perry told MTV News earlier this week that she likes to inject her own “naughty twist” into her work, but representatives from well-known manufacturers Trolli and Haribo have insisted that their bears would never behave in such a way. “Those are definitely not Trolli Gummi Bears in the video because Trolli Gummi Bears would never be that rude,” John Leonardo, senior brand manager of Farley’s and Sathers (which owns Trolli), told MTV News on Wednesday. “Trolli bears would extend their chubby little arms and give Katy a big old bear hug and whisper, ‘Everything is going to be alright.’ ” And on Thursday (June 17), a representative for Haribo, another manufacturer, told MTV News: “We were as shocked as Katy Perry when we saw on closer inspection that these were not Haribo Goldbears but poor imitations. “After all, Haribo Goldbears are happy, fun and sweet, not rude and crude!” Between both manufacturers, if Perry decides to film a video where the Gummi Bears have undergone anger-management therapy and been rehabilitated, she’ll know exactly where to look. What do you think of the Gummi Bears’ behavior in Katy Perry’s “California Gurls”? Let us know in the comments below!
