Calls for Australia to Drop Compulsory Bicycle Helmets Laws

Photo: Warren McLaren / inov8 Not that this is a fire that needs any stoking but Australia is yet again debating the relative merits of helmets for cycling. And remember this is the country that back in 1991, became the first to make riding a bike without a helmet illegal. Associate Professor Chris Rissel believes that “”What it does is it puts people off cycling and makes people think that cycling’s a dangerous activity, even though it’s a really healthy thing to do and it increases people’s physical activity.” Then there’s Professor Frank McDermott saying there is no question that if the current laws were overturned, head inj… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Can We Preach Green Without Being Preachy? (Video)

Food Posters From the Past are Recipes for the Present (Slideshow)

Credit: Minneapolis Public Library The message on posters from World Wars I and II are often similar to the messages we try to send at TreeHugger, such as growing your own food, walking instead of driving, reducing waste and conserving. Two years ago I did a small slideshow, Frugal Green Living: Posters for the Movement , and I have been collecting American, Canadian and British images ever since. Downtown Cairo to Go Car-Free… Eventually

These kinds of scenes could become a thing of the past in downtown Cairo. Photo by Daveness_98 via Flickr. When it comes to crazy drivers, traffic congestion, and all the air and noise pollution that come along with massive amounts of cars jammed into one place, Istanbul, I’ve heard, has nothing on Cairo . But the Egyptian capital is apparently moving to remake its enti… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Pin It for the Planet: Canadian Campaign To Get People Out of Cars is Too Little, Too Late

The WWF in Canada is doing a campaign this week to encourage people to drive less. Not an unreasonable thing; after all, “That selfish and thoughtless machine is hurting the environment and not doing you any favours either. We’re not saying to stop driving completely! Just a little bit less every day.” Then it gets strange. They want you to pin your car key to your shirt . And don’t forget to pin your car key to your shirt. Yes, we understand it’s a little weird, but it shows that you’ve got both the commitment to the planet and the confidence t… Read the full story on TreeHugger
