#FreeBlackMamas Initiative Aims To Bail Out Over 100 Black Moms For Mother’s Day

A collective of organizations and activists dedicated to spreading awareness about racial inequality within our country’s criminal justice system and ending mass incarceration is on a mission to unite Black mothers who can’t afford to post bail with their families just in time for Mother’s Day. For the third year in a row, the National Bail Out is leading the Black Mamas Bail Out campaign as an avenue to help economically disadvantaged African American women who have been impacted by the unjust cash bail system, People reported. Free Black Mamas Group Reunites Black Women with their Families for Mother’s Day https://t.co/v4r0mlhbpD — People (@people) May 11, 2019 The number of women of color sitting behind bars for non-violent offenses is growing at an alarming rate. According to a report released by the Prison Policy Initiative , 80 percent of women in jails are mothers and a majority of them are the primary caretakers for their children. The National Coalition of Black Civic Participation estimated that 60 percent of incarcerated Black women have dependent children. The barriers and lack of resources provided for Black women in these situations led to the creation of the #FreeBlackMamas movement. Through the initiative the collective is aiming to bail out over 100 women across 35 cities this year. So far there has been over $350,000 raised. Since its inception in 2017, 300 mothers have been released and reunited with their families. Last year alone, there were over 150 mothers released. The collective’s efforts go far beyond simply bailing individuals out. As part of the campaign, the National Bail Out created the Free Black Mama’s Fellowship; an 8-week paid program that provides advocacy-focused workshops so formerly incarcerated women can turn their pain into progress and become change agents in the bail reform space. “We understand the bail outs as connected to the long and deep history of anti-Blackness. We see these fights to free our mamas for Mother’s Day and to fight against money bail really as fights that continue the work of abolition that our ancestors began,” Marbre Stahly-Butts , one of NBO’s founding members, said in a statement. “We see bail as a symptom of an underlying problem. We believe that people are more than the mistake they made. When folks have done harm, we think there are better ways to deal with that harm than to put them in a cage.” The initiative has proven to be nothing short of effective and impactful. “It was a beautiful feeling, for people who did not know me, to come and get me out for Mother’s Day,” one of the mothers who was recently released and reunited with her family told ABC News . “They became family.” SEE ALSO: T.I. Chicago Gets Its First Black-Owned Urgent Care Facility

See the original post:

B lack doctors are making power moves in medicine. According to the Chicago Crusader , a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility. They just opened the first Black owned urgent care facility on the south side of Chicago. https://t.co/OnUEIvKAeb — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) May 9, 2019 The center—dubbed Premier Health Urgent Care—is the only one of its kind in the Hyde Park community. It was a collaborative effort between Reuben C. Rutland, MD , Airron Richardson, MD , Michael A. McGee, MD , and former NFL player Dr. Gregory Primus . Aware of the lack of access to adequate health services, they were determined to cultivate a space where individuals can receive proper care and support. The center goes beyond providing urgent care, it has mental health and wellness services as well. “We are happy to open an urgent care in Hyde Park because the community needs it. I see so many urban professionals who either delay or go without care because of time constraints. No one has 8 hours to wait in the emergency department for a minor illness or the flexibility to wait 3 weeks because their primary care doctor is booked solid. We are here to help fill that gap,” Dr. Rutland said in a statement. “We are not in competition with the doctors’ offices or the emergency department. We are a supplement to them both, to help relieve the stress on those two facilities.” The founders are also using the center as an avenue to combat violence in Chicago. They will give some of its profits to an organization called Project Outreach and Prevention which develops programming for at-risk youth in an effort to keep them off the streets and on the right track. There are several Black medical professionals launching urgent care centers designed to help individuals from underserved communities. In 2018, Dr. Tamara Moise and Wadson Fils opened the doors to Big Apple Urgent Care, Brooklyn’s first Black-owned urgent care center. TV Cancellations: Which Hurts the Most?

So… did your favorite show survive? With most network television shows wrapping up their current seasons in mid-May, viewers around the country have been on the edges of their seats due to a number of suspenseful finales. But also for another, more meaningful reason: They've been anxious about these programs airing any episodes beyond said finales. Indeed, it's renewal/cancellation time around the TV dial, with all four major networks making major announcements over the course of the past few days. The following shows did not make it. They have been canceled. Which will be the most painful to never watch ever again? 1. I Feel Bad This NBC sitcom centered on a mother and wife who didn’t ever feel appreciated at home. Alas, it wasn’t appreciated by viewers, either. 2. The Cool Kids Not cool at all, according to Fox viewers. They never cared about this very lame sitcom. 3. The Passage This Fox drama was based on popular source material. But it probably should have been on HBO or something. 4. Lethal Weapon The off-screen drama was more interesting than anything on screen for this Fox drama, which is gone after three seasons. 5. Star Forgive the obvious pun here, but this Fox drama will not be shining bright for the network in 2020. 6. Murphy Brown We loved the original, but what was CBS thinking bringing this back for a revival?!? View Slideshow

Paola Mayfield Defends "Rights" of Anti-Vaxxers, Horrifies Fans

We all love Paola Mayfield. We stand by her when she’s mom-shamed by morons over her outfits or for taking breastfeeding pics. But the 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? star has made a statement that even her most devoted fans are struggling to defend. Pao is using her platform to champion the “rights” of anti-vaxxers to endanger their own children and countless others. Oh no. … Paola was asked what she thinks of anti-vaxxers and, taking to her Instagram Story, she shared her alarming opinion. “They have the right to choose what they want,” Paola asserts. “And,” she insists, they have a “right to do “what they feel is safe for their loved ones.” Astoundingly, Pao even thinks that these plague enthusiasts should be allowed to do so “without being judged!” That’s a hard no, Paola. Paola then does her best to convince her fans and followers that she is not speaking of herself, here. “I’m not anti-vax,” Paola claims. She has said this in the past, but the truth is … complicated, as we will explain. “But believe me,” Paola writes. “I will do my research before putting something in my little one!” On top of everything else, her use of the word research is drawing some unflattering responses. A couple of months ago, Paola was mom-shamed for vaccinating baby Axel . It was the correct thing to do and the responsible thing for her to do. Backlash from people prone to hysteria and vulnerable to misinformation campaigns was expected, unfortunately. But some of the ire wasn’t over Pao and Russ’ decision to vaccinate — not exactly. Some 90 Day Fiance fans were concerned because Paola noted that Russ had been reading a discredited book by a noted anti-vaxxer. At the time, Paola said that she and Russ would pick and choose which vaccines baby Axel would receive and when he would receive them. Spacing out vaccines against a doctor’s advice can endanger your child, especially in this era of outbreaks. And skipping some vaccinations without a medical justification? You know how you’re always supposed to take the entire round of antibiotics, even if you start feeling better? It’s like that. Unless there’s a pressing medical reason otherwise — like, one confirmed by your child’s actual doctor — you can’t just pick and choose. Medicine is not a buffet. Paola is a smart woman, and she’s been very careful about not giving specifics about her plans for Axel. But by expressing support for anti-vaxxers, she is making a clear statement: She values the feelings of anti-vaxxers more than the actual, real life safety of their children and of other children. You know how you don’t have to be a nazi to help the alt right — you just have to defend their right to advocate genocide? Well, anti-vaxxers are the same way. You can’t suppor their “right” to do harm in a vacuum. While we’re mentioning politics, we should note that there isn’t a clear political association with anti-vaxxers. They seem to be an alarming 10% of the population and are represented by only a few more percentage points on the conservative side. That’s a testament to Horseshoe Theory but also a glaring idictment of our education system. Real talk: children with cancer, compromised immune systems, or certain rare allergies cannot be vaccinated. Those kids need to be surrounded by people who cannot be carriers so that they will not die . Vaccinations are not a personal choice because they impact others. We love Pao, but she’s just wrong about this. View Slideshow: Paola Mayfield Mom-Shamed by Morons Over Breastfeeding Pic

Little People, Big World: Just How Fake Is It?!?

Little People, Big World is a reality television show. This is not exactly a groundbreaking statement. As such, however, the long-running TLC series has faced the same criticism and the same questions that have faced all other reality television entries on the small screen. Which is to say that many viewers are often wondering the following: Is the series scripted? This speculation was spurred on about three years ago when Jacob Roloff quit the show , resigning with a controversial Instagram post that he claimed at the time called out the program for exactly what it is: An example of total phoney baloney, according to Jacob. “Producers have to try to get us to follow the talking points,” he shared in this message, jumping way high on a pedestal and adding: “For me, noticing how the agenda of the crew doesn’t work well with the health & happiness of our family is what made me decide quite a while ago that I could not be a part of it as soon as I was able.” In this same post, Jacob referred to “storyline” and wrote of his loved ones: “They are the Roloff Characters and I have scarcely anything in common with them.” Years later, Jacob would sort of apologize for these remarks; or at least explain that he had since grown up and regretted making them. He’s now on great terms with these same loved ones, but the issue remains. The question hangs over the Roloffs. How much of what we see each week is natural and normal? And how much is produced or even flat-out written for Amy, Matt and their kids? “For the most part, we keep it real,” Amy Roloff told Us Weekly in a recent interview. “My kids are real. They’re grounded … Granted, here we’re filming three hours and then take the one moment that people will say, ‘Oh, it’s scripted.’ “I say, ‘No, it didn’t feel like the three hours that I was in.’ I like to think that we’re pretty honest, we’re pretty real – at least I am – sometimes to a fault.” In other words: The show is edited. And these edits may be done in such a way to emphasize a certain topic or disagreement in order to boost interest — such as Matt and Amy’s fight a couple weeks ago over the farm . But nothing you see is fake by any definition of that word. How has a show that started off as an idea for a one-off documentary lasted this long? How has it actually set a Guiness World Record ? In this same Us Weekly chat , Matt Roloff chalks it up to what he calls “Compromise TV.” He expounded on this theory as follows: “Compromise TV to me, that definition in my mind, basically means male, female, there’s something for everybody – any age groups, grandpas, grandmas, young kids. “Everybody has got something. “Whether it’s the relationship between Amy and I, or the babies, or the marriages, or the bulldozers and Track Hoes, we’ve got the big farm that has the beautiful backdrop.” View Slideshow: Audrey and Jeremy Roloff: Why They REALLY Quit Little People, Big World
