Whether booming out of car speakers or playing at family events, the percussive sound finds its way into the atmosphere, whether you’re an active listener or not. Go-go has roots in 1970s funk with iconic performers like Chuck Brown (considered “The Godfather of go-go”). However, as years went by, the genre started to evolve, the pace quickened, and soon, a new dance style emerged. “Beat ya feet” is a style that involves fluid footwork and energetic moves, and dancer Porche “ Queen P” Anthony knows all about it. Queen P started beating her feet in 1999, only one year after the style was created by Marvin “Slush” Gross in D.C.’s Barry Farm neighborhood. Since then, Queen P has delivered her moves in school hallways, neighborhood churches, and go-go venues throughout the D.C. and Maryland area. Go-go acts like Backyard Band (BYB) , Critical Condition Band (CCB) and Raw Image served as her soundtrack. “Raw Image came out with some serious heat,” Queen P said in a talk with Global Grind . “When they had the song ‘Shake It Out, ‘ it’s something about that record…I used to be in the house drilling myself with that.” Queen P hit the national stage in 2009 when she and her crew, the Beat Ya Feet Kings, made it to MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew . After a solid run on the show, Queen P continued to build beat ya feet culture by teaching the dance across the country. However, back home, the momentum started to die. Even though beat ya feet kept an underground following, the popularity for the dance started to dip. “Beat ya feet is like a cat,” Queen P said. “We keep getting these lives. It’ll die and then it’ll be alive again, and we’re running out of lives. I told dancers if we don’t capitalize on it this year, that’s it.” Now, at 32 years old, Queen P continues to spread the beat ya feet dance with workshops, videos, and merchandise. She even had a notable cameo in Ciara ‘s music video for “Dose.” Check out our quick conversation with Queen P below where she describes working with Ciara, go-go culture, and being one of the few women in beat ya feet dance. So you told me you trained in different styles like modern dance, jazz, and hip hop. Then, you started beating your feet in middle school. Was there anything else that contributed to your style today? From ten years old and on is when I really started educating myself on entertainment and performance quality from watching music videos. So The Box (T.V. channel), Video Soul , BET’s Cita’s World. When I would come back from school and do all my homework, I would just turn it on and get right to it. So like watching Ginuwine , Usher , and I’m a huge supporter of Missy Elliott. But I’ve always been more of a fan or supporter of the creatives behind the artist, so like the choreographers and the creative directors. I understood that the artist isn’t solely responsible for their songs. How did the Ciara music video come about? My dance mentor is Jamaica Craft and she is Ciara’s creative director. She had been waiting on the right project to utilize my talent and it just so happened to be “Dose.” I honestly was shocked because my name was in the video and that never happens for a dancer…to get that type of shout out. You’re representing for the ladies in beat ya feet. Do you feel like you have a specific experience being a woman in the culture? There was a point where I felt disrespected in the community of BYF. I’m a woman in a male-dominated movement and it’s not easy at all, especially when you’re just a natural-born leader. I got a lot of pushback within the team I danced for and from others around 2009, especially when myself and the kings were on America’s Best Dance Crew. What’s the climate for women in the culture now? There were a lot of girls involved back in the late ’90s, but I believe at some point for girls, it wasn’t as popular. Right now, there are females who do the style, but they don’t want to identify with women. I grew up watching artists and dancers back in the day who wore loose fitting clothes and hats — tomboy swag I guess you can say — but they embraced their femininity. I am one in the same. There’s young ladies who I’ve trained in the style, but they just haven’t embraced it as much as I have over the years. What’s your vision for beat ya feet in the future? My desire is that it becomes as global and respected as the Krump movement , and the rawness of the style doesn’t get tampered with or watered down. What about go-go culture as a whole? Well if we continue to get support from the go-go community, they will see how important we are to keeping them in the ears of listeners as well. The dance movement is able to bridge the gap. Dancers are the new DJs. We break music as well. If we don’t move as a unit, I believe the dance will spread and get bigger, and in essence, leave the music behind. The more people we get familiarized with the go-go sound as dancers, then we’ll have the undivided attention of people in other areas, and they’ll take on a love for not just the dance, but the music as well.
M ia Love was the only Black woman Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives and now the voters of the state she represented are slamming her. Voter Martin van Blankenstein said he previously voted for Love but she she disappeared after her election, did little to nothing in D.C. and ignored her constituents in Utah. “It was like she was a ghost representative,” said Blankenstein. On the Democrat who won, he explained, “Is Ben McAdams any better? I don’t know, but I think it’s worth a shot.” Another Republican voter, Ryan Gaines, believes Love was not accessible. “You couldn’t talk to her,” he said. “I’ve tried to call before to give my opinion on certain subjects. It just never got through, and I didn’t find that to be very appropriate for an elected representative.” Other voters felt her campaign style was “very hyperpartisan.” Love constantly attacked Democrats, claiming the rebuttal against her was harsh because she was a Black woman—however, she never properly addressed her racist president. Recently, she talked about the Black community and Democrats. The Utah representative told the Washington Examiner , “So why do they stay with Democrats? I think it’s because they feel like they have a home — or Democrats make them feel like they have a home. I’ve said this to my colleagues, we need to do a better job than just talking about how great our policies are, we need to actually let people know that we care. They need to like Republicans.” Well, it sounds like Democrats or Republicans have no love for Mia Love. The relationship between Ronnie Ortiz-Mago and Jen Harley is kind of shockingly dysfunctional, right? Like it's hard to believe they've managed to be together for so long without one of them just leaving or, you know, something much darker happening. It just seems like there's a never-ending avalanche of badness happening with them, and this week, it's no different. Except this time, the badness could perhaps result in Ron disowning his own daughter. 1. Where to Start? Ron’s whole entire life is a mess, and it has been for a long time now — it’s definitely not just Jen’s influece, that’s for sure. 2. RON STAHP He’s especially proven himself to be a disaster in relationships. Aside from Jen, we’ve only ever seen him with Sam on Jersey Shore, and not a single person who witnessed any footage of them together would call what they had healthy. 3. Ruh Roh But Ron and Jen … it’s a lot. It’s a whole, whole lot, and literally none of it is good. 4. What Romance! These two crazy kids weren’t together all that long before she got pregnant, and in April of this year, she gave birth to their daughter, Ariana. 5. Summer Bunni understands why Cardi B may be hopping mad at her right now. The heretofore unknown Instagram model totally gets why it wasn’t cool for Offset to stick his carrot into her hole, but she wants to at least reach out to Cardi and try to make things right. First, a quick refresher: Cardi B announced on Tuesday night that she had split from Offset , her baby daddy and her husband of about a year. She said the couple simply fell out of love and would remain business partners and friends and sounded very calm and collected about the whole thing. About 24 hours later, however, TMZ obtained text messages seemingly sent from Offset to the aforementioned Summer Bunni . As you can see below, it’s pretty clear Offset is trying to arrange for a threesome between Bunni and a rapper named Cuban Doll. The exchange allegedly took place in June, just a few weeks before Cardi gave birth to a daughter named Kulture. To back up the legitmacy of this text exchange, TMZ also published the following FaceTime photo of Offset, which was sent to them by a rival of Cuban Doll who wanted to out her role in this unethical mess. It doesn’t pain Offset in a very positive light. Neither Cardi B nor Offset have commented on this threesome/cheating rumor. But Summer Bunni has taken to Instagram and also spoken to TMZ, acknowledging in both places that she definitely slept with Offset during his marriage to Cardi. “I have not messed with Offset since he had his baby. I didn’t know how serious his marriage was, you know … I feel ashamed,” she said through tears to TMZ, adding in this interview: “To Cardi B and to her fans and to her family and to her situation: “These were never my intentions and I never wanted to break up a happy home or be a cause of someone just saying, like, ’F—k it,’ to get a divorce or anything like that.” According to TMZ, Cardi was maybe a little upset after learning that Offset cheated on her. But she sort of expected it from him. What truly set her off, an insider claims, is that he wanted to have this threesome with Cuban Doll, a Latin rapper who some believe tries to copy Cardi’s style and appearance. She simply couldn’t handle that part of the sexual equation. Summer, meanwhile, says she has NOT reached out to Cardi, but does have a message for her: I would like her to know that I’m a very genuine person and I’m not here to break up her family, or mess up what she has going on with her husband and I’m very sorry that this has happened. I’m very sorry that I didn’t think about my worth as a young lady and I just hope that she can overcome this. I know that her and Offset actually do have love for each other; I can tell. So I just hope that, with this, she can just focus on her love for Offset. There was also the above message, shared to socia media by the Bun shortly after her name went viral for all the wrong reasons. It reads: Goodmorning, a quick letter to the fans, followers and social media outlets. During the last 48 hours, I haven’t enjoyed the social media frenzy. Not only is it draining but humbling. I will always be woman enough to admit when I’m wrong, and in this situation I was. Seeing another woman’s pain does not bring me joy, nor do I think it’s funny. I’ve always been for women supporting each other but in this situation not only myself but others have failed. I separated myself from certain situations and people for a reason.
