Recap: BOSSIP Writers Detail How To Smash The Internet To Smithereens With #NABJ19 Headline Writing Working Shop

Source: BOSSIP / NABJ19 Recap: Bossip Staff Takes On #NABJ19 We’re happy to report that BOSSIP was especially present for NABJ this past week , hosting our own workshop on comprising the viral headline! The convention for The National Association of Black Journalists or NABJ kicks off every year for journalists, students, and media-related professionals. There, folks learn firsthand key strategies in media, socialize professionally, and seek career opportunities. This year it took place in sunny & humid Miami, Florida. Source: @AieshaArab / IG The workshop was hosted by BOSSIP’s deputy editor Danielle Canada who emceed a panel of our viral headline experts on staff, including senior editor Jennifer H. Cunningham, Aiesha Letman (myself), Jason Lee and, Alex Ford. Bruce Wright, managing editor of our fellow Interactive One site News One was also there to assist. In the workshop, our writers were asked the FAQs behind the manufacturing of a standout headline, regardless of the voice of the publication. Attendees learned about the importance of headline writing as it pertains to ideation and creating viral moments. And…when is a headline too far? Jason Lee was there to assist with the latter. Of course, this question was directed at our site, specifically.  So, how do we not “cross the line”? What is offensive or ‘racist’ to white folks? Jason says, ‘As far as (mayo), aioli and those sort of things…if white people are offended by certain things, then that’s fine but the dynamic is different. We are a Black site, we are Black people, normally we’re the oppressed people. So, if the worst you have to deal is being called a ‘mayo-packet’ behind somebody who did something racist, something stupid, then in my mind, you kinda have to chalk that.’ New One’s Bruce Wright had an important point to add, saying: ‘I don’t think we should only single out Black media for doing what the original media created and is still doing on now.’ Alex Ford probably in one short sentence gave the crux of what you need to create a viral moment. ‘We’re not just writing these headlines for you to just see them and laugh. If you read some of the posts, their actually well-written, comedically. Also, your use of language. Find that one word that represents what you’re trying to say. Word choice is important. ‘ BOSSIP is proud to be a completely unique voice at the intersection of Black culture, entertainment, and political-awareness. We would like to send a HUGE thank you to everyone who came to check us out at NABJ19. We hope to meet you again!

June Shannon: I’m Choosing Geno Doak Over My Daughters!

When the world first met the Mountain Dew-fueled aspiring pageant queen known as Honey Boo Boo, Alana Thompson and her family were a source of guilty pleasure comedy. All these years later, the Thompson/Shannon clan remains a reality TV fixture — but no one is laughing these days. Much of the problem is that Alana’s mother, June Shannon, is trapped in a potentially fatal downward spiral. June’s substance abuse issues have been well documented, and insiders say her continued drug use is tearing her family apart. Already, June has been the subject of a failed intervention, and her family believes she’ll never get clean until she purges one particular bad influence from her life. We’re talking, of course, about Shannon’s boyfriend Geno Doak . June’s troubles with the law and with addiction seemed to begin shortly after she started dating Doak. Alana moved out on her mother and took up residence in her sister’s home, reportedly out of fear of Geno. But it’s not as though Mama June’s daughters are abandoning her. According to a new report from TMZ, the girls recently reached out and issued June an ultimatum: Apparently, Alana agreed to move back home with her mother on two conditions — June would need to dump Geno and seek professional help for her addiction issues. Sadly, Shannon reportedly refused to take either step, and Alana will remain in the care of her 19-year-old sister Lauryn for the foreseeable future. Insiders say Alana’s sisters agree with her that it’s simply not safe for the 13-year-old to return home until June has fully cut ties with Geno. In addition to the fact that he’s rumored to be Mama June’s main drug supplier, Doak’s own erratic behavior has become a major cause for concern. It’s been less than two months since Doak crashed his car  June’s garage before emerging from the vehicle naked. Doak claims he’s been unfairly portrayed in the media — but there’s really no way to spin something like that. Meanwhile, these tumultuous times are clearly taking a toll on Alana, who pretended to snort coke during an Instagram Live session, much to her sister’s chagrin. Here’s hoping June is able to get the help she needs and be the mother her kids deserve before it’s too late. Pusha T Comments On His “Maybach Music VI” Verse [Video]

Source: PHILADELPHIA, PA – SEPTEMBER 03: Rapper Pusha T performs onstage during the 2017 Budweiser Made in America festival – Day 2 at Benjamin Franklin Parkway on September 3, 2017 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Anheuser-Busch) The internet is still hype about Pusha T’s “Maybach Music VI” verse and for good reason. In a recent interview he gave more context about the viscous sixteen bars he laid for Ross. As spotted on Complex the Virginia native spoke to Joe Budden during the latest edition of  The Joe Budden Podcast . Jumpoff wasted no time in getting him to discuss the memorable feature. While the “Drug Dealers Anonymous” rapper didn’t confirm he was taking shots at Drake or Lil Wayne, his answers let us know that he is still about the “if the shoe fits” life. When asked “why did you do that to this verse that’s not out?” he responded “that’s what we in it for man, we here to rap, bro”. “We all have to do what we do best, the next guy got to do what he does best,” he added. “At this stage of my career, you know, I mean… hey man, hey,” he chuckled. On the track Push had several lines that could be interpreted as bait for Drizzy or TuneChi including “What a hell of a year, true colors expose/Crowns on these clowns, it’s like you colored they nose.” Ultimately Rick Ross decided to pull his appearance from the final version of  Port Of Miami 2 citing that he would like to bring Pusha and Wayne together in a more genuine manner. ‘LHHHS6’ Recap: Lyrica Is Heartbroken But Her Girls Got Her Back

Excerpt from:

Source: Lucianna Faraone Coccia / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood picks up from Apryl and Moniece’s face-off [*cough* over Fizz]. Moniece says she doesn’t want Fizz, but it seems like she’s jealous of Fizz and Apryl’s relationship, or whatever it is they’re doing. In fairness, Moniece is also upset because Apryl and Fizz have been making moves with her son Cam, like going on a family trip to Chicago, without telling her. That’s actually valid. Apryl still denies that she and Fizz are a thing. Basically, we’re still in the lying phase. But anyway, they manage to get past the hostility and apologize to each other for their respective transgressions. This is clearly not over. But for now, they make amends and even decide to support each other when it comes to their music.  Apple Watts is back. She’s the resident stripper-tryna-be-a-rapper. Every Love and Hip-Hop city has to have at least one. Anyway, she’s still working on her music but she isn’t affiliated with the manager she had last year, and definitely not that man who pretended to be her father. Now she’s seeking guidance from Yoyo, who has taken on the role of rap mentor April’s mentor through the literal Yoyo School of Hip-Hop.  Next, we find a heartbroken Lyrica is kicking it with Princess and her best friend, Sia. This is the aftermath of Jason Lee leaking that info about A1 cheating with Summer Bunni while Lyrica was pregnant. Lyrica is in tears as she laments how hurt she was. Princess chimes in and says she caught Ray J “headed in that direction” when she was pregnant so she empathizes. Lyrica has A1’s phone number blocked at the moment but he has a show coming up and Sia suggests they run up on him. That’s not this episode, but it’s coming.  Now we’re back at the Yoyo School of Hip-Hop. Yoyo thought she was going to connect Apple Watts and Summer Bunni, not knowing what was about to happen. Basically, Apple Watts was down with meeting Summer at first, but then she recognized who Summer was. Apple and Lyrica are cool, so Apple immediately calls her out and goes into fight mode. They go back and forth for a second, but you know security got this. Apple gets removed but she’s outside yelling about how she wants to deliver Compton Fists of Fury to Summer Bunni.  Meanwhile, Summer is standing with Yoyo, going back and forth between crying and yelling back at Apple. Yoyo is telling Summer to pull it together because she’s going to have to deal with a lot worse as her career progresses. Blacc Chyna is in the studio with Brittany and they’re planning her music. The real point of this scene is for Blacc Chyna to encourage Brittany B to work on her relationship with her mother since they both have toxic moms in common. Brittany isn’t too sure about that though because she’s still dealing with the trauma from her mother’s crackhead-ish behavior over the years. But we’ll get back to this next episode.  Let’s fast forward a bit. Now we’re at a party or showcase, or something. We find Misster Ray with Summer Bunni and Yoyo. We’re not sure if Apple is coming, but she probably is, because, Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood , but Yoyo mentions that Summer Bunni needs to be ready in case Apple shows up. Summer starts getting all teary-eyed again talking about how what happened the other day with Apple wasn’t called for and she’s tired of people putting stuff in #TheBlogs about her and calling her a homewrecker when they don’t really know her, yatta yatta. Yoyo tells her to snap out of it, once again, then Ray J and Princess walk in. You already know that Princess ain’t feeling Summer on behalf of Lyrica. And then…Lyrica waltzing in with Apple. That’s how the episode ends tonight. But it’s going down next week because Lyrica and Summer Bunni are going to have a war of words.  RELATED POSTS ‘LHHHS6’ Recap: Apryl Has A Love Jones For Fizzle Pop ‘LHHHS5’ Reunion Recap: Moniece And Princess Love Do The Unthinkable

Eddie Murphy BYKE! The Trailer For His Netflix Film ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ Is Pure Fire [VIDEO]

Source: Courtesy Netflix / Courtesy Netflix Netflix Releases Official Trailer For ‘Dolemite Is My Name Have you been paying attention to the buzz over upcoming Netflix film ‘Dolemite Is My Name?’ Netflix just dropped the trailer and it looks amaaaaaazing! Stung by a string of showbiz failures, floundering comedian Rudy Ray Moore (Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy) has an epiphany that turns him into a word-of-mouth sensation: step onstage as someone else. Borrowing from the street mythology of 1970s Los Angeles, Moore assumes the persona of Dolemite, a pimp with a cane and an arsenal of obscene fables. However, his ambitions exceed selling bootleg records deemed too racy for mainstream radio stations to play. Moore convinces a social justice-minded dramatist (Keegan-Michael Key) to write his alter ego a film, incorporating kung fu, car chases, and Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), an ex-backup singer who becomes his unexpected comedic foil. Despite clashing with his pretentious director, D’Urville Martin (Wesley Snipes), and countless production hurdles at their studio in the dilapidated Dunbar Hotel, Moore’s Dolemite becomes a runaway box office smash and a defining movie of the Blaxploitation era. Comics and rappers have praised Moore as a pioneering influence over the past few decades, and Dolemite Is My Name is a hilarious celebration of a singular talent who made his own legend. From director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Empire); Emmy and Golden Globe-winning writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, The People vs. O.J. Simpson); and the producing team of Oscar and Golden Globe nominee John Davis (Ferdinand, Joy), Golden Globe nominee John Fox (Joy) and Murphy; the film features an all-star supporting cast — including Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Snoop Dogg, Ron Cephas Jones, Barry Shabaka Henley, Tip ‘TI’ Harris, Luenell, Tasha Smith — plus costumes designed by Academy Award winner Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther).
