If you only know one thing about Jana Duggar, it’s probably that she’s unmarried. That wouldn’t be a big deal for most 29-year-olds, but the fact that Jana is still single just a few months shy of 30 is highly unusual for a woman in her community. Duggar women are taught from a young age that procreation is one of their two main reasons for being. (The other being religious devotion, of course.) Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are devotees of the Quiverfull movement and its disgraced founder, Bill Gothard . Gothard teaches that it’s the job of every Christian to produce as many offspring as possible with the goal of eventually overwhelming the rest of the population and creating a Christian planet. As a result, within the Duggars’ community, there’s a tendency to look at a woman who’s “squandered” so many child-bearing years with curiosity … or even contempt. Even Jim Bob has stated that he can’t understand why Jana hasn’t found the right guy . We’re sure he meant to be sympathetic, but knowing that you’re a source of constant befuddlement to your own family has got to be a pretty lonely feeling. Anyway, in spite of the subtle shade and the fact that she’s basically treated like a household slave , Jana still thinks her dad is the best thing since floor-length denim skirts, and she reminded the world of her love for Jim Bob in a recent Instagram post. “Happy Father’s Day to the most wonderful Dad in the whole WORLD!” began Jana’s lengthy caption for the photo above: “My Dad is the one who has taught me so many skills—from tiling floors, basic plumbing & electrical, painting, and car maintenance, to how to get the best deals. He taught me how to drive, helped me buy my first car, and has let me try my hand at design on his different real estate projects… even if it means spending a little more time and money to correct something I’ve messed up on (sometimes we learn by trial and error). “Dad has taught me so much as we work on different projects! Whether it’s designing a home or business space, picking out paint colors, flooring, windows or doors, he’s the mastermind, and I love learning from him and doing projects together with him!!” If you thought Jana was done, you’ve got another thing coming: “Dad is a giver. Always giving of his own goods and supplies without expecting anything in return,” Jana continued. “He’s the first one to start a party no matter the occasion.” (Editor’s note: We never really pictured Jim Bob as a party guy, but hey — life is full of surprises!) “He’s the one that pushes us out of our ‘comfort zone’ (for which I am grateful…. at times.) We all need one of those people in our lives!” Jana continued. “He is quick to ask for forgiveness. He is a humble man. A man of patience, kindness, compassion, determination, strong. He is the one that leads our family and points us to Christ no matter the circumstance. “He’s my Daddy and I’m his little girl. Couldn’t have prayed for a better Dad and can only hope to find a man like him to marry someday!!” “Daddy—Happy Father’s Day from your little girl! I love you so much!” she concluded. All of it is very nice, and we applaud Jana for laying her feeling out there so candidly in this age of irony. But everything the Duggars do gets scrutinized and dissected within an inch of its life, so even though Jana couldn’t have made herself any more clear, dozens of followers still zeroed in on the one line about possibly getting married someday. “I am in tears,” wrote one such fan. “What wonderful things to say in honor of your dad. I have no doubt God will bless you with a Godly man like your dad. Just thank God for that future husband of yours.” We suppose Jana sort of invited the speculation by alluding to the fact that she’s still single. Still, the obsession with this twentysomething’s marital status will never not be weird to us. Here’s hoping she’s not as hung up on when and if she’ll get married as her followers seem to be.
