T his year’s Tony Awards could turn out to be a historic evening for Black women in the realm of dance. According to Forbes , choreographer and artistic director Camille A. Brown is the first Black woman to be nominated in the Best Choreography category in 23 years. #ICYMI this piece about @CamilleABrown #dance #choreographers https://t.co/AZnPkrZzVK — Dance/USA (@DanceUSAorg) June 7, 2019 Brown—who is the founder of the New York City-based Camille A. Brown & Dancers dance company—is nominated for her work on the play Choir Boy . The play, which was written by Tarell Alvin McCraney , chronicles the experiences of a Black student who leads a gospel choir. Brown intertwined the storyline with powerful forms of dance expression. She says the premise of the play prompted her to pull inspiration from South African dance traditions, Step dance routines, and Juba dance which was started by Africans who were enslaved. “When I was hearing the spirituals [in Choir Boy] I was thinking about the historical context of them because they’re over 200 years old, but then looking at the men [in the cast] and how they are walking in life in 2019,” she told Deadline in an interview. “I told them that this was a time for them to be unapologetic on stage, and to step into what all this means. I told them, you’re carrying this historical information but you’re also carrying who you are. It’s not just about me coming in and putting in steps – there has to be the need and intention, an urgency, this combination of working and moving our bodies in space and having a dialogue.” The award-winning choreographer has had a storied career in the dance industry. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and went on to dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Brown’s dance company has performed internationally and she has led the choreography for shows that include Once on This Island and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! . Brown says being nominated for the Tony Award is meaningful and speaks volumes about the need for more representation in dance and theatre. “When I wanted to do theatre, I didn’t see many reflections of myself. This Tony nomination is so important to me, and has deep meaning, because the last black woman that was nominated in this category was Marlies Yearby in 1996, for Rent ,” she said. “I have I hope that a young black girl who wants to choreograph for theater but doesn’t necessarily see many black females can see a reflection of herself through me.” The 73rd Tony Awards will air on June 9. Dirty Pool: Public Swimming Closings In Louisville Put Black Children At Significantly Higher Risk Of Drowning

Source: Afton Almaraz / Getty Pool Closing In Louisville Leaves Black Children At Risk Of Drowning Black people not knowing how to swim is an ugly racial stereotype, but sadly, it is also a reality for many African-American children who live in Louisville, Kentucky. According to the Courier-Journal , the city has decided to close four of the city’s public swimming pools including the only pool on the city’s West End aka “the Black side of town”. Not only does that ruin some of the summer fun for the kids, but it also puts them at SERIOUS risk in the future… According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people die every day from accidental drowning. If you are a black child, you are 5.5 times more likely to drown than white children. The disparity is greatest among kids ages 11-12. All of this because Lousiville is facing budget cuts and the first thing to go when politicians decide to save money are programs that help minorities and poor people. ‘Merica. SMFH.

A Lil Positivity: Michael B. Jordan Presents The Central Park Five With Inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award

Source: John Lamparski / Getty The Central Park Five Receive The Roger Baldwin Courage Award Michael B. Jordan praised The Central Park Five — Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — for their perseverance and courage during a luncheon in which the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California honored Netflix’s series about their case. The actor told the men on Friday that he cannot watch footage of the new series When They See Us without getting emotional and feeling like as a young black man he too could have faced a similar ordeal. “It’s dangerous in America when you’re living in a black body,” Jordan said. “The whole time that these men were incarcerated, they never changed their story. They insisted of their innocence even as they did their time.” Yusef Salaam shed a couple tears as he accepted an award on behalf of the series creator, Ava DuVernay. “I’m not ashamed to cry in front of you,” Salaam said after a moment of silence as he reflected on the fact that he and the other men were “just boys” when they were wrongfully convicted. “Our story is a story of an egregious miscarriage of justice.” Salaam and the rest of the Central Park Five were exonerated back in 2002 after being charged with the 1989 rape of a woman in New York’s Central Park. They received a standing ovation as they accepted the ACLU chapter’s inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award; Baldwin was one of the ACLU’s founders and its first executive director. Though this story and the outrage surrounding it is anything but new, DuVernay’s series has re-ignited a public outcry over how the case was handled. Shortly before the men accepted their award, Linda Fairstein–the Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor who observed the teenagers’ interrogation–was dropped by her book publisher in the face of the increasing criticism.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Reunion: Who Flipped the Eff Out?

You may not believe this, readers, but it’s true: Some serious drama reportedly went down on stage at The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 9 reunion taping. Crazy, right?!? You probably thought the special would be calm and collected and that each woman on set would totally keep her cool, no? According to Us Weekly, Camille Grammer was at the center of the main controversy at this taping, getting into it with a fellow star and even storming away from everyone when things got too testy. “At one point, Camille ended up walking off the stage and had a full breakdown,” one insider told this tabloid , noting that Camille and Denise Richards “got into it.” Per a second source, Camille was in a “hot seat” — and did not react to it well. Far from it, in fact. “The women were taking her to task,” this same second source says. For what reason? Anyone who has been paying attention this season can likely take a few easy guesses. Grammer returned to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills only as a friend during season 8. She then under fire during season 9 when she was caught talking about her costars – specifically Teddi Mellencamp and Dorit Kemsley – behind their backs. After filming the aforementioned reunion, the 50-year-old reality star revealed she regretted attending the taping, which took place on Wednesday, June 5 and which will air later this summer. “I showed up in good faith for #RHOBH reunion but I shouldn’t have gone,” wrote Grammer yesterday. “Hindsight is 20/20.” Added Grammer of her castmates: “They have been talking behind my back the whole time. The Hypocrisy of it all.” While Grammer is clearly looking for some attention here, most of the attention this week was on Lisa Vanderpump, and for good reason: She quit the show ! “I think they’ve made it pretty impossible for me to go back frankly,” Vanderpump told The Daily Mail on Tuesday, June 4 when asked about her return on next season. “So… no.” Pretty straightforward, huh? “I have a great relationship with [Bravo]; I just don’t have a great relationship with the women,” she added to Us Weekly on Thursday. “After 17 episodes of them bashing me, I think I’ve had enough of all of them.” On Tuesday night’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after-show, Vanderpump continued to not beat around the bush. “I’ve always said I’m not just a Housewife,” Lisa said. “I didn’t make a career out of being a Housewife… I don’t have time for bullsh-t negative minutiae. I don’t.” So there you have it. Will you miss Vanderpump on the show? View Slideshow: 17 Stars Who Really Love the Real Housewives

Y’all Finna Argue: Here’s What Happened When Future (Maybe) Pettily Sampled Ciara While Dropping Ashy Breakup Sadness Anthems

Source: Courtesy of Reebok / Reebok The FutureHive has assembled. Future dropped a new EP overnight called Save Me and while the internet was expecting more codeine-laced turn up, he instead gave us a bunch of songs that alternate between sad cries for help and that good old toxic misogyny we’ve grown to know and love from him. However, one song in particular has caught everyone’s attention. It’s a song called “Shotgun” which sounds eerily similar to the beat from Ciara’s “Promise.” Ok but anyone else notice shotgun by future got a similar beat to promise by Ciara ? Or am i trippin pic.twitter.com/3GDmiEdhUW — Jaye (@onlyjaye) June 7, 2019 Of course Future would have to get the sample cleared which would be tricky but not outside the realm of possibility. Still, if this happened or even if he got the producers to intentionally reinterpret the beat, this is one of the all-time petty moments of his career. Beyond that, his album is full of sad songs about breakups that confused, astound and bring out the tears from his loyal followers. This has all come together to give us one of the more hilarious series of reactions we’ve seen. Take a look… FUTURE SAMPLING PROMISE BY CIARA & SACRIFICING HIMSELF FOR THE SAKE OF PETTY & MISOGYNY pic.twitter.com/hUcL3MJe4e — spread love. (@preachperfect) June 7, 2019
