Peyton Manning Named 2013 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year

He can do more than just star in hilarious commercials. The Denver Broncos quarterback, whose career was nearly derailed by multiple neck surgeries two years ago, has been named the 2013 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. The honor comes days after Pope Francis was named Time’s Person of the Year. In his cover story on Manning, who is poised to break Tom Brady’s single-season touchdown pass mark this year, Lee Jenkins writes that Manning “remains the reigning champion of the everyday.” Jenkins also cites Manning’s evolution from someone with unparalleled physical gifts to someone who now succeeds more with his mind and his determination. “The laser rocket arm — Manning’s description in that famous Sprint commercial – is more like a cap gun now,” reads the article. “Yet he is currently piloting the best team in the AFC and the most bountiful offense in the NFL while threatening single-season passing records for yards and touchdowns. Still, that’s not why Manning is Sportsman of the Year for 2013.” So, why did Manning earn this distinction, on that has gone in the past to such star athletes as Derek Jeter and LeBron James? It’s the way in which he has written his “sequel,” Jenkins said, gushing over how Manning has been “prepared to face consequences,” been “prepared for adversity” and been “prepared for change.” Did SI make the proper selection? Should Peyton Manning be the 2013 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year?   Yes, absolutely! No, what about David Ortiz! No, what about LeBron James! No, what about… someone else! View Poll »

Joan Fontaine Dies; Hollywood Legend Was 96

Academy Award winner Joan Fontaine, a legendary Hollywood leading lady from what many consider the Golden Age of film, has died at age 96. Fontaine died in her sleep Sunday morning at her home in Carmel, Calif., which overlooked the Pacific Ocean, after having been in failing health. Noel Beutel, a longtime friend of the late actress, told Reuters, “She was an amazing woman, she had such a big heart and she will be missed.” Among Fontaine’s most memorable films in a career spanning four decades and some four dozen films was the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Suspicion. Co-starring Cary Grant, that movie earned Joan Fontaine the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1942, beating out her sister in the competition. That was a recurring theme. In addition to acting, her career was marked by a storied and bitter rivalry with her older sister, Olivia de Havilland. Nominated that year for Hold Back the Dawn, de Havilland went on to win Academy Awards for 1946’s To Each His Own and 1969’s The Heiress . Now aged 97, de Havilland resides in Paris. Her wins established the sisters as the only two siblings ever to both win Academy Awards for acting. Fontaine also earned Oscar nominations for her star turns in Hitchcock’s 1940 American debut, Rebecca , and for 1943’s The Constant Nymph . Fontaine appeared mousy and innocent in her early movies but later carefully selected her roles and went on to play worldly, sophisticated women/ She wrote in her 1978 autobiography, “No Bed of Roses,” that her sickly condition as a child actually helped develop her acting skills over the years. In her sickbed fantasies – pillow dreams, she called them – Joan Fontaine created “endless scenes of romance, passion, jealousy, rejection, death. De Havilland, for her part, reportedly saw her younger sister as a sneaky attention-getter, melodramatically playing sick and trying to outdo her. According to various media reports, the sisters were said to have stopped speaking altogether in 1975 after their mother passed away from cancer. Fontaine said that de Havilland had not invited her to the memorial service but her sister claimed Fontaine had said she was too busy to attend. “I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she’ll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it,” Fontaine was quoted as saying.

Sandy Hook Shooting: One Year Later, Nation Still Struggles With Impact

One year ago today, horror struck Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Conn., in such a way that the town, state and nation still struggle to grasp it. The disturbing legacy of the second-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history is so profound that it cannot hold just one meaning. Nor can it be easily reconciled. Adam Lanza, a mentally ill 20-year-old recluse obsessed with school shootings, gunned down six adult women, 12 girls and eight boys in 11 minutes. Before that, he killed his mother. After the rampage, he killed himself. There was devastation. There was outrage. There was political rancor. There were even conspiracy theories (below). A year later, what has changed? The Sandy Hook Shooting – Fully Exposed On this tragic anniversary, and under the shadow of a Colorado school shooting just yesterday, the debate over guns, mental health, healing, and humanity continues. Whether the U.S. has reformed its gun laws after the Newtown massacre may depend on your point of view. Clearly, America affirms a right to bear arms. President Barack Obama was unable to persuade Congress, as he vowed in Newtown’s aftermath, to take meaningful action regarding gun reform. Obama failed to even expand background checks, though he did strengthen many existing gun laws and take related steps on mental health and school safety. Adam Lanza , 20, suffered mental health problems. Many people, including his victims’ parents, say society needs to better treat these severe problems to prevent another disturbed gunman committing a massacre. In fact, to combat the stigma-loaded phrase of “mental illness,” some wish to change it to something deeper or more organic like “brain health” or “brain illness.” Sandy Hook Shooting: Official Report Lanza was living with his mother, Nancy, 52, who ensured that her son received treatment, but also gave him access to semiautomatic weapons. Before the violence, Lanza had become isolated. His parents divorced in 2009. His father, Peter, remarried and moved to an area not far away. Their only other child, Ryan Lanza , 24, wasn’t living in the mother’s home. Connecticut authorities’ investigation concluded that Lanza “had significant mental health issues that affected his ability to live a normal life and to interact with others.” “What contribution this made to the shootings, if any, is unknown as mental health professionals who saw him did not see anything that would have predicted his behavior.” In any case, families who lost a child in the mass shooting will never be the same. Even a year later, they still struggle to recover from the devastation. Public comments by the families this weekend are unlikely, as several major news outlets, including CNN, agreed not to send reporters to Newtown. The town of 27,000 people decided to raze Sandy Hook Elementary School. A new school will be built on the same site, a symbol of resurrection. Lamar Odom: Khloe Kardashian Brings Out the Worst in Me!

If you thought that Lamar Odom was blindsided or devastated by wife Khloe Kardashian filing for divorce Friday, you thought wrong on both accounts. In fact, he’s looking to get remarried soon … to his basketball career. A new report suggests that he is as over it as she is, and that Khloe Kardashian filing for divorce is for the best, because he wants to focus on his career. Khloe Kardashian to Divorce Lamar Odom She cited irreconcilable differences for the split and seeks the restoration of her last name, plus the denial of any sort of spousal support for Lamar. The couple of four years has no kids, and an iron-clad prenuptial agreement. It was a long time coming, but her wedding ring came off after a video of Lamar rapping about cheating on Khloe (and looking wasted out of his mind) leaked. Lamar, though, actually puts the blame on HER … and his loser friends. According to insiders, his infidelity with Polina Polonsky and others can be blamed on friends “supporting me the wrong way by bringing girls around.” The basketball star also casts blame on Khloe Kardashian herself. “I can’t be f–kin’ with Khloe,” the troubled athlete says, inexplicably claiming that his reality star wife (and not his crack habit) “brings out the bad side of me.” In any case, it looks like it’s over between them, as Lamar says he needs to “get married” to his basketball career and wants to ignore the past. Doesn’t sound like either side is pining for a reconciliation, does it? Lamar Odom Crack Video Odom is currently a free agent, and without an NBA employer. Given all we’ve learned about him in the past six months, it seems that basketball teams are treading lightly when it comes to bringing him into the fold. Khloe Kardashian divorcing Lamar: The right decision?   Yes. She tried, but he’s a lost cause. No. There is still hope. View Poll »

Amy Adams Back for Vanity Fair January 2014 of the Day

Amy Adams is old…pushing 40…She’s a mom and she’s boring…but she’s a redhead who isn’t scary to look at, which is a rare occurrence and probably why she works in Hollywood, because when they find them, they have to scoop them up and exploit them… Her claim to fame was some Disney shit, and Lois Lane in Man of steel, so I guess her career is at it’s peak after what was probably 20 years of working at it… Now she’s in Vanity Fair and she’s sexing it up and showing back, which would probably be hotter if this was a porn magazine…and not Amy Adams…but she’s in her underwear anyways for the freaks out there who have an Amy Adams Fetish…yay
