A lot of things are starting to make sense and if these reports are true, it’s no wonder Whitney Houston’ s family sold footage of her funeral to the media and claimed it was for the financial benefit of Houston’s only child, daughter Bobbi Kristina . Despite selling over 200 million albums and singles throughout her career, Houston was reportedly broke when she died last month, and owed her label Sony Music tens of millions of dollars. While sales and downloads of Houston’s music increased soon after her death, which is often the case in these situations, her daughter won’t see any of the royalty checks until the debts are paid off and that could take quite some time. The Daily reports that when Houston signed a deal with Sony in 2001 for $100 million and six albums, her reserves were pretty much dry
Nope, none. Not D-Wade, not Bron Bron. Nobody: Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has always been lauded for his self-motivation and drive to be the best. It’s a good thing he has that internal ambition, because according to Bryant, he’s gone through his 16-year career without a true rival on the exterior to push him to succeed. “I didn’t have one,” Bryant said after scoring 38 points in the Lakers’ 115-107 win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday. Despite Bryant’s acknowledging that it’s not just another game, he wouldn’t characterize his relationship with LeBron James as a rivalry. “Not for me,” Bryant said. “I get up for everybody just the same, to be honest. It’s hard for me to turn my meter up any higher than it normally is.” OK, Bryant was asked, how about Dwyane Wade? After all, Wade plays shooting guard just as Bryant does, Wade has one Finals MVP trophy to Bryant’s two, and Wade has to be close to as competitive as Bryant or else he wouldn’t have given Bryant that hard foul across the face in the All-Star Game. “He’s too young,” Bryant said. “He’s too young. When I came into the league, he was in elementary school.” Bryant is three years older than Wade, but was already a seven-year veteran when Wade was drafted in 2003. Bryant said it is “a little late in the game” for him to develop a rivalry with any current NBA player, so instead he is chasing names in the record books rather than in box scores from the 2011-12 season. “At this point my rivals, in terms of what I have left to accomplish in my career, (left the game) when Magic (Johnson) and Michael (Jordan) retired in ’98,” Bryant said, referring to the second of Jordan’s three retirements that came after he won his sixth and final championship with the Chicago Bulls. “That’s it. In terms of what I’m looking to accomplish, that’s about it.” The San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan won four championships to Bryant’s five throughout their shared careers, but Bryant said while the Spurs might have qualified as a team rival to his Lakers, Duncan’s individual rivalry came against Shaquille O’Neal as a fellow big man. “He was never in my position,” Bryant said. “He was more Shaq’s rival than mine. As a team, the Spurs were always a team that we had to go through. So from that standpoint, yes, but in terms of personally, no. I’ve outgrown them all, from A.I. (Allen Iverson) when I first came in to (Tracy) McGrady to Vince Carter and so forth and so on.” Bryant said that he developed the desire to win multiple championships from an early age. “It’s always what I want to accomplish,” Bryant said. “That’s what you set your goals at. Growing up, watching them, they’ve always won multiple championships and that was always something that I felt like must be done. So, my goal originally when I was a kid and so forth, and when I was a teenager, always started from gauging them.” Although he makes a valid point, someone is certainly feelin himself wayyyyy to much. Lamar Odom is not ready to play in the NBA again. Not yet at least. The reality star, who left the Dallas Mavericks over a week ago to be with his ailing father , has been temporarily relegated to for his team’s D-league affiliate, the Texas Legends, for one game in order to “get his legs back under him,” a source tells ESPN. That contest will take place tomorrow night and then Odom – whose 7.7 points per game this season are half his career average – will likely rejoin the Mavs for a big game against the Thunder on March 5. Lamar’s wife, meanwhile, is facing a problem of her own: Khloe Kardashian and her sisters have been sued for $5 million because they are bit fat liars. Well, big skinny liars. But still.
Singer said she’s unable to join Simon Cowell’s show due to scheduling conflicts. By Gil Kaufman Janet Jackson Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Scratch Janet Jackson off the list. Among the many divas who’ve been whispered about as possible replacements for Nicole Scherzinger on “The X Factor,” Ms. Jackson seemed like the most intriguing. The soft-spoken star has plenty of experience on TV — including starring roles as a teenager in “Good Times,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Fame” — but taking a seat next to Simon Cowell for the second season of his singing show just isn’t in the stars. After weeks of rampant speculation, Jackson told The Insider that she’s taking her hat out of the ring due to scheduling conflicts. Cowell said that he had his eye on two women to replace Scherzinger and his reality TV bestie, Paula Abdul, as he seeks to retool the show after a less-than-spectacular first season. The speculation mill has spun out the names of everyone from Jackson to Britney Spears, Pink, Mariah Carey and even the late Whitney Houston. While Cowell has not discussed Jackson publicly, he did squash rumors that Beyonc
Newly legal pop star weighs in on being a dad someday, signing Carly Rae Jepsen boss and more. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News On Thursday, Justin Bieber became a man in the eyes of the law as he celebrated his big 1-8. In honor of the momentous occasion, we thought we’d bring you Bieber’s responses to some more of your burning questions. Beliebers wanted to know everything from what his life plans are to how things have changed since becoming famous. MTV News toasted to Bieber’s birthday in a number of ways — we asked his famous pals like Usher and Lil Wayne to send shout-outs and counted down his top 18 moments so far — but answering fans’ questions may be one of the biggest highlights of his birthday week. So read on below for the scoop and be sure to click on the video to see/hear what else Bieber had to say — that means you @We_Love_SellyG and @Isabellaxxlove! @LeilaaCarteer & @AlissaValley : Now that you are 18, how do you think your life will change? Justin Bieber : Well, 18 requires a lot of responsibilities; moving out requires me to be alone, without my parents. So, legally, I can make any decision I want. My mom’s still going to be there, probably, calling me every day. Probably won’t be able to get away from her for too long. Eighteen’s going to be fun. I look forward to a lot of touring and a lot of spending time with my fans, so 18 is going to be a great year. @BieberCal : How has helping people made you a better person? Bieber : Giving back is one of the most amazing things that I’m able to do with my career, just being able to pay it forward. I was signed by Usher, a fellow artist, and I was recently able to sign a girl named Carly Rae Jepsen, who has a single called “Call Me Maybe,” so she’s blowing up right now. It’s a great song. She’s great, so why don’t I help her get out of Canada? @alexqte : Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Bieber : I see myself acting. I have some ideas right now I’m working on. I see myself in 10 years having a family. Twenty-eight, that’s a good time to really have a family ’cause I want to be a young dad. Maybe, [it’s a] long time away though. Don’t get any ideas, people. It’s not happening anytime soon. @Just_Bieber_xo : Do you think you’ve changed since becoming famous? Bieber : Yeah, I’ve changed, hopefully not for the worst since this all happened. I was young, I was 12 or 13 when everything started to happen so, of course, I’ve changed physically and mentally and stuff, but always kept my fans first and always kept God first. That’s the most important thing. Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber ! Now that we’ve counted down the superstar’s 18 greatest moments, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone. Tune in today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com to catch a special introduction from DJ Whoo Kid and G-Unit signee Paris. By Rob Markman Tyga Photo: C Flanigan/ WireImage It’s been a long time coming, but Tyga has finally released his Young Money debut, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, and to celebrate, the L.A. spitter will visit “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (February 29). It hasn’t been an easy road for Tyga, who released his independent debut LP, No Introduction, in 2008, but after hooking up with Lil Wayne’s YMCMB crew, he has amassed a series of wins. His biggest single, “Rack City,” has already peaked at #3 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart and spawned a high-profile remix featuring T.I., Young Jeezy, Wale, Fabolous and Meek Mill . While tracks like the Lil Wayne-assisted “Faded” and “King & Queens” featuring Wale and Nas have fans excited about the album, which was released February 21, there is still some controversy surrounding the release. It seems Tyga failed to clear a sample from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the physical CD was pulled from major retail chains like Best Buy and Target. The snafu will no doubt put a dent in Tyga’s first-week sales, but he is still projected to sell about 75,000 copies digitally. Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth will also appear on this week’s “RapFix Live” to make a special announcement. Emerging from the underground rap crew the Screwed Up Click, Trae has made quite a name for himself in the streets. With a number of solo albums, mixtapes and collaboration LPs like 2003’s A–holes by Nature , with Z-Ro, Trae has become one of the most respected MCs in the game. His 2011 LP Street King featured contributions from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wyclef Jean and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few. Now Trae is ready to take a new step in his career, but you have to tune in to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday to find out. Finally, DJ Whoo Kid is set to hit the famous red couch with newly inked G-Unit Signee Paris. Fans may have heard the femcee spitting on 50 Cent’s latest mixtape project, Big 10. Catch Tyga, DJ Whoo Kid and Trae tha Truth on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtags #RapFixLive. Jones died Wednesday from a heart attack. By Gil Kaufman Davy Jones in 1967 Photo: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Image Davy Jones, lead singer of 1960s made-for-TV pop group the Monkees , died Wednesday (February 29) at age 66. According to TMZ , Jones died of a heart attack at his home in Florida. The baby-faced singer born David Thomas Jones in Manchester, England, on December 30, 1945, began his career as a child actor, appearing in a British daytime soap opera and radio plays and taking a brief detour into being a horse jockey before landing a Tony nomination at age 16 for his role as the Artful Dodger in a Broadway production of “Oliver!” (In a rock and roll footnote, glam-rock icon David Bowie adopted his stage name after worrying that his birth name, David Jones, would cause confusion with the then emerging stage star and future Monkees singer.) In an ironic twist of fate given his future stardom, he appeared alongside his “Oliver!” castmates on the December 1964 episode of “The Ed Sullivan Show” that featured the legendary American TV debut of the Beatles. He launched a solo recording career in 1965, the same year he was chosen to fill out the cast of the TV musical sitcom that would launch him to global fame. The group was put together by producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, who were inspired by “A Hard Day’s Night” to assemble a Beatles-like band to provide the face for their slapstick series. He appeared alongside American musicians Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, providing lead vocals for many of the band’s most iconic tunes, including “Daydream Believer,” “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.” The group’s run on TV lasted from 1966 to 1968, and though the bandmembers initially were barred by producers from writing and performing their own music, as time went on, they took over more of the musical reins and the songs took on an increasingly psychedelic tone. Along the way, they scored hits such as “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” with each bandmember contributing vocals but Jones emerging as the “cute one” and de facto maracas-shaking frontman alongside drummer Dolenz. With wacky premises that presaged the music-video boom of the 1980s, the show was a hit and the band went on tour, eventually breaking from the show’s musical producer, Don Kirshner, to explore increasingly esoteric sounds. The show was canceled in 1968, and Jones appeared alongside his bandmates in the trippy feature-film flop “Head,” which was co-written by then-unknown actor Jack Nicholson. The “Pre-Fab Four” limped along for several more years, but after the loss of Tork and Nesmith, Dolenz and Jones were left to tour as a duo for much of the 1970s. The bandmates would continue to reunite in spurts — with the exception of Nesmith — and in 1986, MTV helped revive interest in the group with Monkees marathons that rebooted interest and once again sent Jones back on the road. Jones continued to tour and perform on TV and in films throughout the 1980s and ’90s, appearing on “My Two Dads,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” releasing his final album, the cover LP She, in 2009. Jones was slated to mount a U.K. tour in honor of the group’s 45th anniversary in May along with Tork and Dolenz. Share your memories of Jones and the Monkees in the comments below.
