‘Jackass’ star’s death is our #7 Newsmaker of the year, proving fans appreciated the bearded daredevil as much as we did. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Dunn Photo: Getty Images A lot of people view their co-workers as being a kind of extended family. Here at MTV, though, the madmen of “Jackass” really are part of our gang. They’ve taken over our studios, filled our prime time with outrageous spin-off programs and used their original half-hour show as a launchpad to worldwide fame. So it was with an especially heavy heart that we reported on “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn’s death in a high-speed car crash in June. His untimely passing is #7 on MTV News’ Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, indicating the world seemed to share in our appreciation for Bam Margera’s bearded best pal. Dunn, 34, the go-to guy for outrageous stunts that even such stalwarts as Steve O weren’t willing to try, died while bombing down the highway in his sports car near his Pennsylvania home after a night of drinks with friends. Not only did many of our readers write in with fond remembrances of Dunn, but pals Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine shared their grief, along with everyone from motocross racer Carey Hart to the MTV brass. With his kind, soft eyes and up-for-anything attitude, Dunn was described by many of his co-stars and cohorts as the kind of guy who would do anything for a friend. Many of you shared your stories of meeting him and confirmed that he was a person who loved life and brought a little bit of joy to everyone he met. As always, we tried to paint a deeper picture than the one you may have gotten from the mainstream press. When we sent a reporter to Dunn’s hometown of West Chester , we spoke to some of his neighbors and those gathered at a makeshift highway memorial. They too spoke of a kind-hearted soul who always remembered everyone he met and, well, just seemed like a good dude who really appreciated the life his fans had allowed him to live. And yes, once the details about his death, along with that of passenger Zachary Hartwell , came to light, they served as a cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking and driving . Police determined that Dunn, a notorious speed demon, was driving his 2007 Porsche between 132 and 140 mph in a 55 mph zone and that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania. A recent MTV special gave a loving overview of Dunn’s life, told through his many TV appearances and the memories of his co-stars and friends, following his career from his early years in Ohio to some never-before-seen clips from “Viva La Bam” and “Jackass.” His friends said Dunn liked to marvel at the kind of life he was able to lead thanks to his willingness to dive into pools of poo and ride BMX bikes off roofs. And though we will miss him, he left behind the best legacy we could ask for: laughter and joy. MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. Skrillex collaborators tell MTV News, ‘We all feel like rocks stars now.’ By Akshay Bhansali Nero Photo: MTV News While Skrillex might be the face of hard-dance EDM in the U.S. this year, his friends and collaborators from the U.K. Nero are quickly becoming popular. In fact, Nero’s Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray, joined by frequent vocal partner Alana Watson, have five stellar hit singles across the pond from their debut album, Welcome Reality, which is now available in the U.S. Notably, here in the States, fan support has surged, with strong Stateside gigs, a recording deal with Interscope and their single “Me & You” even being used in a Beats by Dre commercial featuring the good doctor himself. It’s another endearing success story spawned from a genre that, in the past, catered to a very few, but today, the masses clearly can’t get enough of. “We’ve had songs off the album that have charted very well in the U.K.,” Stephens recently told MTV News. “And we come over here wondering — because they are not on the radio and not charting here — we wonder if they’ve translated over to the U.S. market, and we are always really shocked and amazed when they go off just as much over here.” Watson added, “For the crowds here in the States, ‘Guilt,’ ‘Promises’ has had a massive reaction, with obviously Skrillex doing a collab remix of that for us, which is amazing!” Of the group’s live performances, Stephens explained, “You can’t really hear Alana. When we play live now, she’s just drowned out by the crowd. It’s very humbling when you got a whole massive room of people just singing your songs back to you. We all feel like rocks stars now.” Welcome Reality is a cinematic, electronic opus inspired by colleagues like Daft Punk and ’80s sci-fi films like “Blade Runner” and “Aliens.” Nods to the music and pop culture of the ’80s are no more prevalent than on their latest single, “Reaching Out,” which features ’80s recording legend Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, who recorded original vocals for Nero, and bits from the Hall & Oats classic “Out of Touch.” “A guy that works in the office just next to our studio, he produced [Hall’s] most-recent album,” Stephens explained. “So, he said, ‘Oh, I know Daryl. I can sort that out for you. He’d probably be up for singing some new material on the track as well.’ “So, back and forth through emails, he agreed that he would re-sing that passage and sing a whole brand-new fresh chorus for the track. So, it’s all original Daryl Hall material, which is amazing! And he still just sounds so great. It’s incredible.” Though Nero and Watson have yet to meet Mr. Hall in person, collaborating with the ’80s icon proved to be a career milestone for the trio. “Just having this ’80s legend, it wasn’t an obvious way to go,” Stephens continued. “So for us, that felt really special. We got this guy that we love, but also this fresh thing to have on a dance track. No one else had really done that.” The video for “Reaching Out” is, fittingly, as stellar a nod to the era as the song, a “Miami Vice”-meets-“Scarface” short film of Miami ’80s opulence comprised of stock footage from the decade. Welcome Reality also features U.K. hit singles “Innocence,” “Me & You,” “Guilt” and “Promises.” Related Artists Daryl Hall
Busta says new collabo with Breezy, ‘Why Stop Now, ‘ was ‘organic.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News Could Busta Rhymes and Chris Brown be developing a long-lasting chemistry? The pair, along with Lil Wayne and the Dungeon Dragon, ruled airwaves in 2011 with their collaborative hit, “Look at Me Now,” and now they’re hoping for similar results with Busta’s new single “Why Stop Now.” Though the title may suggest that the two singles are somehow related, Busta insists that his latest song with Breezy wasn’t as methodically put together as people may think. “I wasn’t actually trying to capture the energy of [‘Look at Me Now’] and bring it into this project,” the newly signed Cash Money MC told MTV News while on the song’s video set. “I just think that for me, especially at this stage in my career, I only do records with people that I respect.” The Diplo and Afrojack-produced “Look at Me Now” peaked at #1 on Billboard ‘s Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs Chart and was voted #9 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 list. The Colin Tilley-directed video remained among the year’s best, receiving multiple nominations at the 2011 VMAs. Not a bad track to build a blueprint off of. The bass-rattling “Why Stop Now,” which was produced by Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph, is reminiscent of “Look at Me Now,” mostly because it features the same type of speed-rapping by Bus. But rather than a retread of a tried-and-true formula, Busta says the new collaboration came about much more organically. “It was just fortunate that I had something that worked well for what we do to be able to have another collab with him,” he said. “If I didn’t have that record, then we wouldn’t be doing this video and we wouldn’t have had another song out together. “I’m just about making sure that the music ultimately speaks in the most organic way possible,” he continued. “It doesn’t just seem like something that we threw together to try and capitalize off of a momentum that was there.” Related Artists Busta Rhymes Chris Brown
Much-anticipated return to Middle-earth appeals to loyal ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans. By Kevin P. Sullivan Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Just days after the 10th anniversary of the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” we have our first look at director Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth. The first trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” packs in a ton of action and gives fans a peek at what they can expect when the first of the two films opens next December. We took some time off from watching the trailer on repeat to give you the rundown on the five key things you should pay attention to in the trailer. The Hobbit(s) It wouldn’t be “The Hobbit” without a strong member of the Shire folk to rally behind. Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, and he jumps right into Jackson’s Middle-earth and feels right at home. He also fits in with the two returning hobbits, Elijah Wood and Ian Holm . Both make welcome returns in the trailer and draw in fans of the original films almost effortlessly. The Dwarves Almost as important as Bilbo in “The Hobbit,” all 13 dwarves play key roles in the story. Fans who feared that the dwarves would look too cartoonish should find some peace of mind with the trailer. They completely worked (especially Richard Armitage as Thorin), with a balance between the child-oriented aspects of the book and the grittier look of the “Lord of the Rings” movies. The Song Nothing shows off that balance better than the dwarves’ song. J.R.R. Tolkien featured many songs in the novel, and Jackson and co. incorporated this one in a natural way. It’s a cool and ominous part of the trailer that sets the tone and shows the film’s close adherence to the novel. However, the films do diverge from the novel to cover new material in a few instances. The White Council Because the book does not offer enough action for two complete movies, the films have been padded out with tales from the appendixes and other Tolkien books. The main addition is the story of the White Council. For those unfamiliar with the books, during the journey to Lonely Mountain, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves to fight a mysterious enemy alongside Galadriel and Elrond. Jackson confirmed the story line’s presence in the movie, but Cate Blanchett ‘s appearance in the trailer is our only hint of what’s to come. Gollum The trailer’s big reveal comes at the end as the camera cranes down to the One Ring in the foreground. Next thing we know, Bilbo is chatting up Gollum in the dark, and Andy Serkis crawls down to make his welcome return to the character. The ring and Gollum are the two biggest connections between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” so their presence here is a near guarantee to rope in any fans of the first films. Film has been wildly successful overseas, but critics wonder if it’s worth the hype. By Kevin P. Sullivan “The Adventures of Tintin” Photo: Paramount It has already made a killing overseas, but now it’s time for “The Adventure of Tintin” to make a splash in the States. Though not as widely known in the U.S., Tintin has the help of two of today’s most popular filmmakers, director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson . The reviews are generally positive for “The Adventures of Tintin,” with 75 percent of critics’ approval, according to RottenTomatoes.com . We’ve taken our own sampling of the critical response, so here’s a rundown on what they have to say. The Story ” ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ derives mainly from three World War II-era books, ‘The Crab With the Golden Claws,’ ‘The Secret of the Unicorn’ and ‘Red Rackham’s Treasure.’ These titles mean a great deal to Tintin’s European fan base — the film has already made close to a quarter-billion dollars overseas — and less so to the average American multiplex visitor. The script, by Steven Moffat and the team of Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish follows Tintin (who looks either 12, 22 or somewhere in between) and his faithful dog Snowy as they come into possession of a model sailing ship, the Unicorn, containing a clue to the whereabouts of a vast treasure. Kidnapped and bundled on board a steamship commanded by the career alcoholic Capt. Haddock, our boy-man hero becomes the pawn in an age-old duel between Haddock, a good old sot, and the sinister Sakharine.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Performance Capture “I’m not one of those people with a knee-jerk disdain for motion capture (I enjoyed ‘The Polar Express’ and loved Jim Carrey in ‘A Christmas Carol’), but in ‘Tintin,’ the technique that renders all that movement so flowing and frictionless also makes the characters come off as if their souls were made of sponge. Is this the ‘uncanny valley’ — the much-discussed phenomenon whereby motion-capture characters look just human enough so that what’s missing from their eyes is subtly disquieting?” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The 3-D “I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself. Spielberg not only uses 3-D but bases his story on one of Europe’s most beloved comic characters. The 3-D he pulls off, just as Scorsese did in ‘Hugo,’ because he employs it as an enhancement to 2-D instead of an attention-grabbing gimmick.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Actors “If the mocap technique falls somewhere between live-action and animated moviemaking, the same goes for the performances, which are altogether fluid yet sometimes (especially in certain dialogue-heavy sequences) give the impression of watching a very realistic video game with the sound turned up a few thousand notches. [Andy] Serkis (‘King Kong,’ ‘The Lord of the Rings’) nonetheless manages to turn Haddock into what will surely be the trilogy’s most memorable personage, while [Jamie] Bell (‘Billy Elliot’) makes Tintin about as interesting as he can be, which is to say sometimes less so than his dog.” — Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter The Final Word “Though the acting is uniformly strong, the story just isn’t engrossing, particularly for those not familiar with Tintin comics. There are a few spectacular scenes, such as a biplane flying into a lightning storm and a crash-landing in the Sahara, but the thrills are sporadic. Chases abound but none is breathtaking. … The much-publicized collaboration between producer Peter Jackson and Spielberg sets high expectations. But while the technical artistry is there, the film lacks a sense of magic, intrigue and mystery.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today Check out everything we’ve got on “The Adventure of Tintin.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Barbz, shld i twerk in the stupid hoe vid???’ Minaj asks fans. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images If Nicki Minaj ‘s latest Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, “Stupid Hoe,” seems off-the-wall, her fans should probably expect the video to be as well. And given the hints that the fierce MC has dropped on Twitter, something zany is definitely in store. Over the course of the last few days, the singer has been keeping her Barbz and Kenz up-to-date on the video shoot, which will by all accounts feature multiple costume changes, multiple setups and even some fried chicken. “Next shot is in a bathing suit and [hairstylist] terrence got me eating fried chkn and carrot cake!” she tweeted, later adding, “gettin my nailz done. still shootin the vid. 2 more looks!!!!” The rapper later posted a photo of her manicure, which featured animal prints and rainbow colors. “Barbz, shld i twerk in the stupid hoe vid???” she asked. “but i 4got my twerkin moves … dang.” She may not end up twerkin’ in the video, but as of Wednesday, she still had some work to do on the clip, so it seems anything could make the final cut. “Stupid Hoe” will be the second video off of Minaj’s February 14 release. Earlier this month, she teased the clip for “Roman Reloaded,” the album’s lead single. “Well, [Roman] was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there, so they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him,” Minaj explained. “But I can’t tell exactly what happened, you’ll just see it in the video format, but let’s just say he got out of there.” Minaj added that the video for “Roman in Moscow” “will be shot real soon.” Those aren’t the only Minaj videos that fans are excited for. Her clip for Madonna’s lead single, “Gimme All Your Luvin,” had everyone buzzing when she tweeted about a kiss she shared with the Queen of Pop. While little is known about that video, a behind-the-scenes photo of Nicki donning red sunglasses and hanging out with M.I.A. on set hit the Web late Tuesday night. Related Artists Nicki Minaj
