Brooklyn femcee says real stars have no ‘time limit’ and clears up Black Friday shipping delays on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim on RapFix Live Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Lil’ Kim started her career as an artist on Atlantic Records under the Notorious B.I.G.’s imprint, Undeas Records, before eventually going on to ink a deal after her 2006 prison release with the Trackmasters, though, she never released a project with the production outfit. Nowadays, Kim’s situation is far less complicated. According to Kim, she’s calling her own shots. “I’m independent,” she told host Sway during her appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” “I am a boss, other people work for a boss. I write checks, other people get checks. Everything you see me doing … it’s hard for a female, but I’m maneuvering with my own money and my own relationships.” Last month, Lil’ Kim released new music for the first time in years with the mixtape Black Friday, a conceptual collection that takes aim at her nemesis Nicki Minaj. The project was scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, however, fans were confused when they discovered the set was a for-purchase item and not a free download, as is typically the case with mixtapes. As of press time, fans who bought a copy of Black Friday are reporting that they have yet to receive the tape. Lil’ Kim and her manager , though, insisted on Thursday’s (March 3) live stream that CDs have now been shipped after the rapper took time to sign each unit. In the meantime, Kim seems to have no intention of giving up the spotlight. She voiced her displeasure with Nicki Minaj’s alleged insistence that the Lil Wayne prot
Pittsburgh rapper shares cover duties with ‘Jersey Shore’ star Snooki. By Jayson Rodriguez Wiz Khalifa on the cover of Rolling Stone Photo: Wenner Media Wiz Khalifa got his very first break as a high school senior when the Pittsburgh rapper was tapped by Rolling Stone as an artist to watch. Now, on the verge of delivering his major-label debut, Rolling Papers, the “Black and Yellow” star is set to grace the cover of the magazine, according to RapRadar . In the issue, he’s been named “Hip-Hop’s Rookie of the Year”; The Source bestowed the same honor on him back in November. Wiz Khalifa is sharing cover duties with “Jersey Shore” starlet Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi for the issue, dubbed the “Hot List” special, which arrives on newsstands Friday. MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC” winner — who won by a landslide, thanks to his Taylor Gang following — is riding high (pun intended) off the success of “Black and Yellow,” his hometown anthem that doubled at the Steelers’ soundtrack on their way to the Super Bowl. Wiz followed that number with “Roll Up,” which is currently #76 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100. “Black and Yellow” is still going strong, resting at #10 after hitting the top earlier this year. In January, MTV named Wiz Khalifa an “11 for ’11” celeb to watch, along with Dave Franco, Kim Kardashian and another “Jersey Shore” star, Deena Cortese. “I got a lot of work to do,” Wiz told MTV News shortly before receiving the nod. “I’ve done a lot of work to get where I’m at, but I have to keep working. And, hopefully, I’ll be the best artist of the year.” Will you check out the Wiz/Snooki issue of Rolling Stone ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa
Singer’s arrest tops year of troubles for Grammy winner. By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The pattern has, unfortunately, become fairly predictable at this point. A young star experiences stratospheric early success, lives a high-flying lifestyle and engages in over-the-top rebellious behavior and then begins to spin out of control after experiencing some personal and professional disappointments. The latest victim is former Grammy winner Christina Aguilera, whose annus horribilis reached its peak on Tuesday morning when she and her boyfriend both ended up behind bars . A year ago, Aguilera was on the cusp of a return to the spotlight after nearly three years away, during which she celebrated the birth of her son and recorded a new album, Bionic, which was tagged as her futuristic stab at retaking her pop-diva mantle. “There’s no other way of looking at the last year in her career other than to say it’s been trying,” said Keith Caulfield, the associate director of charts for Billboard magazine. “A lot of artists have tough times and go through all sorts of drama. Mariah Carey had her ‘TRL’ moment when ‘Glitter’ bombed and ‘Loverboy’ didn’t do what she wanted, but she came back with ‘We Belong Together,’ and was better than ever. Everyone was writing [Aguilera] off because that’s what we like to do — beat people while they’re down.” Although authorities have said she won’t be prosecuted, Aguilera was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication on Tuesday morning after her boyfriend Matthew Rutler was pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence. It was the latest hiccup in a year of difficulties for Aguilera, which began with the flop of her 2010 Bionic album, which has sold only 250,000 copies in the U.S. to date. That was followed by a hastily canceled U.S. tour , the failure of her big-screen debut in “Burlesque” and the announcement of her separation and pending divorce from husband Jordan Bratman. Those incidents were followed by her infamous flubbing of the lyrics at February’s Super Bowl and a stumble on the Grammys stage a week later, amid tabloid reports that her partying had gotten out of hand. Billboard ‘s Caulfield said he didn’t think Aguilera’s troubles are comparable to the very public difficulties suffered by Britney Spears several years ago or even Lindsay Lohan’s string of trips to jail and rehab, but that the pileup of Christina’s career and personal setbacks may have been amplified by the speed at which information and photos are disseminated on the Net these days. “Because of the coverage and the way things happen so quickly on the Internet, there’s no room for an, ‘Oh, I screwed up the lyrics or I stumbled.’ The problem is that everything she’s done over the past year was on a significant magnitude: her first starring role, the Super Bowl!” Had all the other previous incidents not happened, Caulfield said people may not have even noticed Aguilera’s stumble at the Grammys, a trip that Caulfield himself, who was at the show, said he didn’t even detect. “I can’t imagine how difficult it is to be Aguilera now: you have a kid, you’re separating from your husband, the album you waited four years to put out no one bought, it’s got to be tough.” PR expert and star of the Kim Kardashian-produced E! show “The Spin Crowd,” Jonathan Cheban said some of Aguilera’s problems may stem from her public image. “She has an incredible voice … she’s won Grammys … but it’s a different story than Britney,” Cheban said of the comparison to Spears and other stars like Lohan and Robert Downey Jr. who’ve had public spirals. “Christina’s definitely had a bad year, but there have been so many stories over the years about how unfriendly she is and how she doesn’t treat the people around her right, that I think people are more eager to take her down. Nobody is rooting for her because over the years she’s not been one to root for anyone else.” Before things went south for her, Cheban said it was hard to knock Aguilera off her pedestal because she was producing hit albums, winning Grammys and being asked to appear in movies such as Martin Scorsese’s 2008 Rolling Stones documentary, “Shine a Light.” But once things started to fall apart, he said, the knives came out. “There were no breaks, really,” he noted. “From the album tanking, the movie tanking, the divorce … she did a weird 360 in her life and went into hiding, and when you hide too much these days, people don’t like that. If you’re not out there, people will come after you and not in a positive way.” So, is it bad luck or bad karma? “Look at [Lady] Gaga,” Cheban continued. “If she’s trying to compete with [Gaga], then she should have praised her. Gaga is a woman of the people and everyone loves her and she’s fun and she’s out there and honest.” Caulfield said another problem is that while Aguilera was away, a new crop of younger, hotter models (Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha) rose up to take her place and when Bionic failed, she purposely took herself out of the spotlight and seemed to amplify the career stall-out. “Pick a diva, they’ve all had their issues and failures — Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah,” he said. “We love a comeback story, though, and, of course, whatever her next thing is, hopefully it will work and people will love her again.” What do you think of Christina’s latest personal and professional woes? ‘Far Away’ singer tells MTV News she’s ‘ready to unleash’ the real Marsha on solo debut. By Rebecca Thomas Marsha Ambrosius Photo: MTV News Marsha Ambrosius is like that gifted actor who dutifully plays understudy to the stage vet, patiently waiting for her turn under the house lights. Now, after years of putting in work behind the scenes, she’s ready to hit her mark. Consider the Brit singer’s debut, Late Nights & Early Mornings, released on Tuesday (March 1), a curtain-raiser for what’s likely to be a long solo career. When Marsha stopped by MTV News’ Times Square offices last month, her jubilation about her first solo offering was infectious. “I’m ready to unleash all things Marsha Ambrosius. Many people have expected many things from me, and all I can tell you is, you can expect me to be on my album.” An industry warhorse who spent the early part of her career as half of the neo-soul twosome Floetry , Ambrosius has written hits and blessed features for everyone from Michael Jackson (the flutter-inducing “Butterflies”) to Wale (last year’s empathetic “Diary”). And while the honorary Philadelphia girl doesn’t take her musical successes for granted, evolving meant venturing out on her own, she explained. “I think I’ve done my fair share of features, done my fair share of writing and producing for many others. It was time for me to hone in on what I wanted to say and who I want to be as an artist.” She soon discovered there was little difference between her songwriter and songstress personas (“I don’t put on a superhero suit and become Marsha Ambrosius the artist. I’m me, 24/7”). Indeed, except for those pipes, she’s every bit the girl next door, making midnight CVS runs, savoring a classic Philly hoagie and still trying to work up to four stars on the Nintendo Wii’s “Michael Jackson the Experience” “Billie Jean” routine (we can vouch that it is killer ). So following a label relocation to J Records and assists from production powerhouse Just Blaze, and longtime collaborators Dre & Vidal, Ambrosius banged out the blistering Canei Finch buzz single “Hope She Cheats on You (With a Basketball Player).” She let that song ride out through last fall, following it up with “Far Away,” a Blaze-produced single whose anti-bullying message might have gotten lost in Marsha’s super-sultry vocals if not for its provocative video. ” ‘Far Away,’ it’s still making noise, so I guess when people hear the record they’ll kinda decide,” the newly svelte singer said of choosing her next single. Before she headed out, racing to catch her train (yes, you might find yourself commuting with the soul star), we had to ask: What about that album title? Because it sounds awfully sensual. “It goes with the lifestyle, it’s the grind. It’s late nights in the studio, it’s early mornings of having to get on the Acela and get up to New York and do interviews. … Late night, early mornings: it’s the life of an artist, but I think everyone can relate to that.” But then she conceded with a laugh, “The sensual aspect came into it when I wrote the record ‘Late Nights & Early Mornings.’ [I was thinking], ‘Ooh, it’s gonna be a late night, early morning when I get you home.’ ” Tune in to Marsha’s live online performance on Tuesday, from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET; visit her site for more info. ‘He was really good in the studio,’ producer Rodney Jerkins recalls of recording ‘What Are Words.’ By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Chris Medina Photo: MTV News While Chris Medina’s exit from “American Idol” is still a shock to many fans, the fact that the early favorite has already lined up his first post-“Idol” project (by way of super-producer Rodney Jerkins and the single “What Are Words”) should alleviate the burn. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with both Medina and Jerkins recently to get the inside scoop on the heartfelt track. “I always knew who Rodney Jerkins was, but after doing some research, I didn’t realize how ‘the man’ he actually was,” Medina explained of his reaction to getting a phone call two days after his unexpected elimination. “I got a call on Friday and then that Monday I recorded,” he said. “It was surreal. It was great.” Medina went on to say that while the song isn’t technically his style, it’s not entirely out of his “wheelhouse.” “The words totally embody what my situation is,” he said. “It’s heartfelt, it’s real, and it was an honor to be asked to put my voice to this wonderful material.” For his part, Jerkins, who was inspired to write the song after seeing Medina’s first audition, said the 26-year-old was a total pro during their recording session. “He was really good in the studio,” Jerkins said. “That’s always the fearful moment for myself as a producer. The first time you work with a new artist [you wonder], ‘What is it going to sound like when you get in the studio?’ “[Medina] came in here and he listened to it one time down and then he was like, ‘I think I got it.’ He started singing it for us in the room, and we were just floored,” Jerkins recalled. “Like, ‘Wow,’ he learned it that fast. I’m like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to get in the booth.’ He was great.” Regarding the higher vocals Medina uses in the track, Jerkins said that is all about his technique of challenging his artists. “A lot of technology has made it where we don’t push the artist like we used to,” he said. “I’m a ’90s guy. I come from the school of the ’90s, where you didn’t have Auto-Tune, we didn’t have the tricks of technology. You had to get in there and work the artist and get the best out of them, and that’s what we did.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” at 10 p.m. Thursday on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke. Kirstie Alley, Romeo, Kendra Wilkinson, Sugar Ray Leonard and more eclectic celebs will compete on season 12. By Kara Warner Kirstie Alley Photo: Charles Eshelman/FilmMagic It seems like just yesterday that we were awaiting the big “Dancing With the Stars” casting announcement for the popular celebrity dance competition’s 11th season, where bold-faced names like Bristol Palin, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and eventual champ Jennifer Grey became even bolder during their time on the show. Now, just six months later, the famous dance floor has been wiped clean to make way for a whole new crop of aspiring dance champs. Here’s a look at the 12 eclectic new contestants signed on for season 12 of “Dancing With the Stars”: Chris Jericho Jericho, born Christopher Irvine, is very well known to the world of professional wrestling fans . The 40-year-old was the first undisputed champion of the WWE in December 2001 (he beat Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock) but put his career on hold recently to focus more on his other passion project, performing as lead singer of heavy-metal band Fozzy . Romeo Although originally signed up to strut his stuff on season two, Romeo was replaced at the last minute by his equally famous poppa, Master P (whose turn on “DWTS” has been touted by many critics and followers as one of the worst in the show’s history; his Paso Doble holds the record for the lowest score ever). With the bar set slightly lower than average, the 21-year-old rapper, who once played college basketball for USC, likely hopes to make it farther than his father. Kendra Wilkinson The decidedly un-shy, already established reality-TV star Wilkinson is no stranger to performing or baring all in front of audiences. Wilkinson, who got her start as a Playboy model, ventured into television as a part of E!’s “The Girls Next Door” before slightly tempering her party-girl ways to settle down with NFL player Hank Baskett, their domestic bliss being the subject of her current show, “Kendra: Bunny Next Door.” Kirstie Alley Before she was the subject of her own reality show, “Kirstie Alley’s Big Life,” first on A&E and now Lifetime, and a Jenny Craig spokeswoman, Alley was known to several generations of TV watchers and filmgoers for her memorable turns on TV shows “Cheers” and “Veronica’s Closet” and movies like “Look Who’s Talking.” The outspoken celeb is a longtime “DWTS” fan, whose entertaining and varied tweets have been featured frequently in our Twitterwood column on MTV Movies Blog . Wendy Williams The self-proclaimed “Queen of All Media” made a name for herself as a radio DJ then became a best-selling author and currently hosts her own syndicated daytime talk show called “The Wendy Williams Show.” Williams has a knack for asking uncomfortable questions during celebrity interviews and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor. Her talk show is reportedly scheduled to go on hiatus while she competes on the show. Chelsea Kane As has been the custom over the course of the past few seasons, the “DWTS” team has welcomed another Disney star into their midst, Chelsea Kane (formerly known as Chelsea Staub, Kane legally changed her professional name back in December). The 22-year-old was a regular on Disney’s “JONAS,” starring the Jonas Brothers, and currently lends her voice to the character Bea on the animated series “Fish Hooks.” Sugar Ray Leonard Leonard, a former professional boxer, follows in the footsteps of a slew of former professional athletes who have danced before him. While athletes have been formidable competitors in “DWTS” seasons past, the boxers haven’t fared quite as well. The 54-year-old’s illustrious career includes winning world titles in five weight divisions, including the welterweight champion of the world, as well as being the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in total purse winnings. Here’s hoping Leonard’s footwork is more like that of Laila Ali than Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather. Ralph Macchio Although he’s had a few memorable parts on TV shows like “Entourage” and “Ugly Betty,” for a lot of people, Macchio will always and forever be the original “Karate Kid.” Sure, Jaden Smith karate-chopped his way to box-office success with his turn in 2010’s remake, but Macchio kicked his way into the hearts of teenage girls everywhere with 1984’s “The Karate Kid” and subsequent sequels. Hines Ward They’re certainly not skimping on the athletes this season! Ward joins the cast as one of three professional athletes competing for the famed discoball trophy. The onetime Super Bowl MVP currently plays wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was born in Seoul, South Korea. In September of last year, President Barack Obama appointed him a member of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Petra Nemcova This Czechoslovakian beauty is a supermodel with a big heart. The 31-year-old was one of hundreds of thousands of people caught in the devastating South Asian tsunami in 2004, which killed 250,000 people in 14 countries, including Nemcova’s boyfriend at the time, Simon Atlee. When Nemcova visited the site of the tsunami several months later, she was unsatisfied with the structure of how charitable donations benefit those living in states of emergency, so she created the Happy Hearts Fund to help children in post-disaster areas in eight countries: Haiti, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Hurricane Katrina-affected areas of the United States. Mike Catherwood While most TV watchers are familiar with Dr. Drew from his various VH1 shows, his “Loveline” radio partner, Mike Catherwood, might not be as well-known. Catherwood, also known as Psycho Mike, has co-hosted the syndicated radio show for a year now, following Adam Carolla’s exit back in 2005. The muscly radio host — who also works on Los Angeles’ “Kevin & Bean Show” — recently made a memorable appearance filling in for Regis Philbin on “Live With Regis & Kelly.” We’ll see if his smooth-talking skills and time in the gym translate to a successful “DWTS” run. ‘She outdoes herself each time,’ one Gaga fan tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” music video premieres on Monday (February 28), and the star’s dedicated legion of Little Monsters cannot wait to see what their Mother Monster has up her sleeve in the Nick Knight-directed music video. When MTV News spoke to a small grouping of Gaga’s loyal fans, they revealed what they think might make the final cut of the video, which was a collaboration between Knight, the singer’s Haus of Gaga creative team and choreographer Laurieann Gibson. A fan named Emily guessed that the clip might seek some inspiration from Gaga’s stark, egg-y Grammy Awards spectacle earlier this month. “Maybe kind of like her Grammy performance,” she pondered. “I don’t know. I have no idea. You never know what the hell she’s gonna come up with.” “She outdoes herself each time and each time she uses a different director,” Leslie Perkins said. “And each time is beyond the last one. I’m expecting nothing less than fabulous.” Cayley couldn’t quite put her finger on what the video might look like. She explained, “I don’t know! I can only imagine!” Mon Cherie and her pal, Pam Kitten, figure that something somewhat shocking will probably come of it all. “There’s not much more of an egg, hon!” Mon Cherie joked. “She comes out of an elephant poop! I don’t know! Nothing shocks me. Lady Gaga — whatever she do is fantastic.” Some of those same fans recently dished to MTV News about what the song “Born This Way” means to them as Gaga ushers in a new phase of her career. “Do what you want to do!” Mon Cherie previously noted. “I mean, keep it real, keep it safe and keep it legal, but you got to do you, hon.” Lisa explained that the tune “means no matter what you are, who you are, who you want to be, you just can’t help it, because you were born this way.” Meanwhile, Gaga revealed during a recent visit to “The Gayle King Show” that she also plans to put out a second “Born This Way” video. The singer said that clip, which will accompany a stripped-down version of the song, “will be released on iTunes.” She added that “a portion of the money raised selling the song [will] go towards an anti-bully charity.”
It went from his mom sharing home videos of him singing on YouTube to an international music career replete with celebrity friends and screaming, rioting fans—all before he even had a driver’s license. Justin Bieber ’s rise was a meteoric one, from humble beginnings in Ontario, Canada to accidentally being discovered by manager Scooter Braun to becoming a protégé for R&B star Usher and developing the kind of fan base that makes you fear for your life.
J. Lo is letting you choose ending of her ‘On the Floor’ video, joining growing list of stars who have also left decisions to fans. By James Dinh Jennifer Lopez Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ Getty Images Jennifer Lopez is set to drop her dance-tastic video for “On the Floor” in less than a week, and she’s letting her fans choose how the Taj Stansberry-directed clip ends. On Thursday, Lopez visited Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show to announce that she’d be giving her fans the option to pick between two 15-to-20-second alternate endings , with the final cut airing during the March 3 “American Idol” broadcast at 8 p.m. ET/PT. “You get to do what I do,” J. Lo said during “On-Air With Ryan Seacrest.” “Like, I go in there with my videos and I start editing and picking all the shots I like and the things that I like and what I feel the best kind of feeling for the record is. You guys get to do that. We picked two different ones and we weren’t sure.” Lopez joins a list of stars, who have also maintained an interactive relationship with fans in order to get feedback on everything from song selection to tour set lists and promotional appearances. Katy Perry’s “E.T.” Single Back in December, Katy took to Twitter to ask fans what they thought should be the next single off her smash Teenage Dream. Shortly after, the pop star thanked fans for their suggestions, admitting that she agreed with the majority of them. Fast-forward two months as Katy selected the futuristic tune “E.T.” as to be the fourth release off her sophomore effort, and adding Kanye West into the mix. Bon Jovi’s Concert Set List When Bon Jovi teamed up with YouTube for a special concert show last year, the rockers were set on giving fans complete control. Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi recorded a video message, which was appropriately uploaded onto the site, asking fans to send in their song suggestions via text or video entry. And as expected, the group performed signature hits, including “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “It’s My Life” during the concert event. Janet Jackson’s Tour Dates Scheduling a tour can be difficult for busy artists, especially when there are so many cities to cover. However, that’s not the case with Janet Jackson’s upcoming world tour , for which she allowed fans vote on the cities where they’d most like to see her perform. The pop icon eventually selected a slew of dates based on fan submissions and they’ll get to hear her perform songs from her greatest-hits album, Number Ones. Rolling Stone Cover It’s not only stars who request fan feedback: Rolling Stone magazine is letting fans choose 1 of 16 unsigned bands to grace their coveted front cover, they announced last week. Through a tournament-style competition, fans will submit votes until the last two bands are standing. From there, the finalists will compete in an onstage battle of the bands that will determine who gets the cover and a recording contract from Atlantic Records. Betty White’s ‘SNL’ Facebook Campaign As Betty White’s popularity skyrocketed in recent years, so did the demand for her onscreen appearances, including admirers who wanted her to score a gig on “Saturday Night Live.” After an overwhelming Facebook campaign to have the then-88-year-old actress host the late-night sketch comedy show, White finally took the “SNL” stage and gave viewers what they wanted. With the help of White, “SNL” alums like Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph, and musical guest Jay-Z, the show earned its best numbers in more than 18 months.
