Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Is Fastest-Selling Single In iTunes History

Song has sold more than 1 million downloads in five days. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lady Gaga is starting to make this look too easy. Every time Mother Monster releases a new single or video, she smashes some kind of previous record. Apple’s iTunes announced on Friday (February 18) that Gaga’s “Born This Way” is now officially the fastest-selling single in the history of the iTunes store. And while Apple has historically declined to give out any sales figures for iTunes, it broke with protocol in a statement announcing the record, saying that “Born This Way” has hit #1 in all 23 countries with iTunes stories and sold more than 1 million tracks in just five days. The feat tops a stellar week for Gaga, which included the single shooting straight to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while becoming the 1,000th song to lead the list in its 52 year history. “It is a tremendous honor,” Gaga told the magazine about reaching the chart milestone. “To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard … I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career. … I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to ‘Born This Way.’ [It] has been so life-changing for me as an artist, and between Billboard and the international number ones and the radio numbers. … I couldn’t be more blessed to have the fans that I have.” The first single from Gaga’s upcoming album of the same name, due out on May 23, has also opened in a major way at radio, rushing onto the Billboard Radio Songs airplay chart at #6 with a first week audience of more than 78 million, giving Gaga the highest opening for a song since the chart began incorporating all radio formats in 1998. R.I.P. David F. Friedman

The skinema world lost a true pioneer of poon today with the death of sexploitation producer David F. Friedman . Friedman produced a number of b-movie classics, from the pioneering gorefest Blood Feast to the Nazisploitation shocker Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS . Friedman started his career producing underground “sex hygiene” films in Chicago, before beginning a fruitful partnership with director Herschell Gordon Lewis. Together Lewis and Friedman produced dozens of films that preached the unholy gospel of sex & violence, from “Nudie Cutie” pics like Goldilocks and the Three Bares to “roughies” like the Defilers . With the liberalizing of the Production Code in the late 1960’s the film market become flooded with hardcore pornography. Friedman showed little interest in producing XXX films, claiming he was in the business of “selling the sizzle, not the steak.” Still, he continued to produce exploitation films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, coming out of retirement to produce Blood Feast 2: All You Can Eat in 2002. David F. Friedman, the Mighty Monarch of Exploitation, baron of boobs and blood, has left the building. He will be missed.

Eminem’s Grammy Night: Why Didn’t He Win Any Major Awards?

While he was the night’s most-nominated artist, he lost out on Album, Song and Record of the Year. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna and Eminem perform during the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards Photo: The Recording Academy/CBS Eminem entered the 53rd annual Grammy Awards as the overwhelming favorite to take home the most hardware with 10 nominations, including the most grandiose of them all: Album of the Year. The Detroit rapper notched a couple of wins on Sunday night, with his Recovery besting Drake and Jay-Z for Best Rap Album and his chart-topping hit “Not Afraid” earning Best Rap Solo Performance. Yet when it came to the major awards, the rapper was shut out. So how, exactly — after rebounding from the most critically disappointing album in his career (2009’s Relapse, which still won Best Rap Album in 2010) with the commercially successful Recovery and its two #1 singles (“Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie”) — did Eminem walk away without Album, Song or Record of the Year? ” Recovery is a dark and grueling record that doesn’t always click musically. It’s easier to admire than listen to, at times,” Spin Music Editor Charles Aaron told MTV News. “The high points are spectacular, but there’s a lot of sketchiness. Also, the Grammy voters skew old and white and have a problem acknowledging hip-hop.” As Aaron points out, in the past, rappers like Lil Wayne and Eminem a decade earlier lost out on the top prize to veteran rock acts like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and Steely Dan, respectively. The project had all the ingredients to win big: a comeback story, big sales, chart-toppers, etc. But compared to past hip-hop albums that took home Album of the Year (Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Outkast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below ), Recovery might have been “too hip-hop,” according to Vibe Editor in Chief Jermaine Hall. Those efforts stretched the boundaries of rap music in a way that satiates Grammy voters. “Outkast winning Album of the Year makes more sense for them, because it lives in several genres,” Hall explained. Still, at this point in his career, a mellowed Eminem has risen to veteran status, and after a career as the wild card, he’s firmly an establishment star now, from his appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman” to sold-out stadium shows with Jay-Z. But in terms of hip-hop on the main stage, there’s still a ways to go. “It’s an uphill battle for a hip-hop album to win Album of the Year,” Rolling Stone senior writer Brian Hiatt explained. “It was a really strong comeback, but I think there’s still a resistance to Eminem specifically and maybe, to a certain extent, hip-hop in general in the overall voting group in the academy.” Despite going home without the big prize, Hiatt suggested that Eminem focus on what his loss might actually represent, which is a sort of coronation of his comeback. The rapper was nominated, an obvious nod of respect, but perhaps his being shunned was recognition in and of itself. “In a way, Eminem should treasure the fact that he didn’t win, which means he’s still dangerous,” Hiatt said. Were you surprised that Eminem didn’t win Album, Song or Record of the Year? Let us know in the comments! For more Grammy Awards analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News! Does Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Owe Debt To Madonna?

Gaga experts weigh in on comparisons between her new single and the Material Girl’s ‘Express Yourself’ among other classics. By Aly Semigran Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Ever since Lady Gaga announced she’d be releasing “Born This Way” earlier than planned (she tweeted on Monday, “Can’t wait any longer, single coming Friday”), the hotly anticipated single has been all the talk among her Little Monsters. While the single has already landed at #1 on the iTunes charts, some listeners have remarked that the track sounds reminiscent of another rule-breaking pop diva: Madonna. “Born This Way” song made the Internet rounds on Friday (February 11), and reactions were coming quickly on Twitter, as well on Top 40 radio. MTV News caught up with a few Gaga experts who weighed in on Gaga’s new song and talk of comparisons to Madonna classics. DJ Riddler of Houston’s Hot 95.7 and Sirius/XM’s BPM told us, “I got the email at 3:45 a.m. from Z100 to play it during my 5 p.m. show today. When I first heard ‘Born This Way,’ the melody had similarities to Madonna’s ‘Vogue.’ Then as I continued listening, the chorus sounded like ‘Express Yourself.’ Finally, the end with the choir chant reminded me of ‘Like a Prayer.’ ” Riddler went on to compare “Born This Way” to “an updated Madonna Megamix,” adding, “Just as those early Madonna singles were #1 hits, this one is destined to do the same.” DJ Uch of Long Island’s Party 101.5, however, only found it to be a slight nod to early Madonna, not an overt copy. “Before I got a chance to listen to the new Lady Gaga single ‘Born This Way,’ my Twitter was flooded with comparisons to Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ and ‘Vogue.’ When I took a listen, initially, I thought that was a stretch, but the hook is definitely a tinge of vintage Madonna,” Uch told MTV News. “Still, those songs came out when Gaga was in diapers, and I’m sure Gaga’s core audience don’t have the nostalgia because they, too, were babies or not even alive. Truth is that all artists borrow from the work of early pioneers and the only ones who notice the similarities are those old enough to remember ‘way back when,’ ” Uch argued. ” ‘Born This Way’ is super catchy and will be an international hit I’m sure. I have the melody stuck in my head and I only heard it once, 15 minutes ago. Congrats to Gaga!” he added. John Polly of the Logo network told MTV News, “She seems to borrow pretty heavily, clearly visually, and sonically, from Madonna. Which is probably super smart, I mean, why wouldn’t you?” Polly asked. “As far as we know, she seems to have Madonna’s blessing.” Elsewhere, comedian Gabe Liebman, who joked that “Born This Way” “will be the gay anthem for as long as it takes until her next song comes out,” was clearly on Team Gaga. While he admitted it “sounds exactly like a Madonna song,” he found it to be “more fun, less annoying” and that Gaga is “younger and a lot more in touch” with today’s listeners. But, not everyone was as ready to give credit to Gaga on her latest venture. Record producer Junior Sanchez not only found similarities to Madonna, but also ’90s supergroup TLC. “At first listen, the verses remind me of TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’,” he said. Sanchez believes that Gaga’s dance tracks “are definitely current and right on spot,” but he’s still waiting to hear more diversity from the star. “I’m still waiting for her ‘Rain’ or ‘Live to Tell’ or ‘Take A Bow’,” he said checking off Madonna hits. “Gaga is genius but compare her to Madonna so early on in her career is a little premature. Madonna has been with us for three decades now.” Sanchez told MTV that he finds “Gaga’s take on how to deal with the gay issues in our culture interesting,” but unlike Madonna, “the songs are not as strong.” “Let’s see what happens” he said of Gaga’s future. “She could definitely change things and we could have a new pop icon for the next decades to come.” Does Gaga’s “Born This Way” remind you of Madonna’s classics? Justin Bieber Tells Guys: ‘Take Your Girl’ To See ‘Never Say Never’

‘Even if you don’t like my music or anything, just go,’ pop star advises. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures There’s no denying that Justin Bieber has a mostly female fanbase, so there are probably swarms of teen girls cleaning off their purple 3-D glasses to check out “Never Say Never” this weekend. For those guys who think they have too much testosterone flowing through their veins to check out the film, the Biebs has a message for you. “If I could say anything [to guys who think the movie is only for girls], I would say, like, just give it a chance,” he told MTV News. “It’s just a good movie. It has a good story line.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’: The New Gay Anthem?

‘Anything she says, I think, will always be the gay anthem,’ says comedian Gabe Liedman. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images With lyrics like “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” and “No matter gay, straight or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I’m on the right track, baby/ I was born to survive,” it’s clear that Gaga is singing for those in the LGBT community who feel disenfranchised on her new track ” Born This Way .” Perhaps it was no mistake that Gaga debuted the club-friendly track on a Friday, the day many people head out on the town. So, as those in the LGBT community make their Friday night plans, MTV News found out what some prominent professionals in the community think about the track and got their answers to the question: Is this the new gay anthem? “Typically, gay anthems have been chosen by gay people, not for gay people. The explicitly pro-gay sentiment is something relatively new to major-label pop (especially major-label pop launching a much-anticipated album by arguably the most relevant pop star in the world right now),” Rich Juzwiak, author of the pop-culture FourFour blog, explained. “I have mixed feelings about the conflation of activism and marketing inherent in a piece of commerce like ‘Born This Way,’ but ultimately, I think Gaga’s heart is in the right place. It’s pretty bold of her, while at the same time being utterly beneficial to her career and exposure.” Logo/NewNowNext.com editor John Polly noted that the song has all the right elements to be adopted as the anthem for 2011. “Its big, it’s loud, it’s fun!” he said. “It sounds like someone mashed up a zillion mirrors in a drag queen’s closet and then shot it out of a sequin cannon … subtle! Subtle! “This one has more [gay anthem elements] than most,” he continued. “It calls out every color of the rainbow, like specifically, vocally. Everything’s in there. It’s got it all and it’s got a beat. It’s familiar, but it’s new. It’s Gaga. She’s got something in there for everyone, so hopefully people are into it … I think you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck, a lot of big gay noise that’s going on.” Gabe Liedman, comedian and pop-culture expert, described the track as “perfect” and admits that Gaga has it locked up, that is until she releases her next track off the May album of the same name. “I mean, she didn’t waste any time with poetry,” he teased. “She kind of got right to the point. It’s not subtle. There’s no misinterpreting it. That’s what she thinks: You’re born this way, born this gay! “I think this will be the gay anthem for as long as it takes before her next song comes out,” he joked. “And that will be the gay anthem and then anything that comes out after that. Anything she says, I think, will always be the gay anthem, until she dies?” Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lindsay Lohan Tweets ‘I Would Never Steal’

Actress’ lawyer reportedly looking for plea deal in jewelry theft case. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan has not yet spoken in public about the felony grand theft charge she’s facing for reportedly stealing a $2,5000 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store in January. But on Thursday, a day after posting bail and being released from jail in the case, the 24-year-old actress defended herself via Twitter. “I would never steal, in case people are wondering,” she tweeted . “I was not raised to lie, cheat or steal.” Lohan also lashed out at detractors who said the clingy white mini-dress she wore to court was inappropriate given the gravity of the situation. She is facing three years in prison if convicted. “What I wear to court shouldn’t be front-page news,” she wrote. “It’s just absurd.” Out on $40,000 bail, the “Mean Girls” actress said she’s just ready to move on and get her career back on track. “I just want to be on set again,” said Lohan, who hasn’t appeared on screen since a brief cameo in last year’s “Machete.” Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, told CNN that despite pleading not guilty, her client is willing to cut a plea deal as long as it doesn’t involve any jail time. “Ms. Lohan maintains her innocence, and now that I’ve seen the police reports, I believe the case is entirely defensible,” Holley said of the police account of the January 22 incident. “Having said that, we will entertain a discussion concerning a plea if it means no jail so that she can move forward with her recovery and her career.” TMZ reported on Friday that according to the police report, the store’s owner did not want to get the police involved in the case. The owner “stated that she does not want to press charges,” the report read. “She stated that she only wants her necklace returned.” Though the owner was reluctant, the district attorney reportedly decided that there was enough evidence to warrant a prosecution. The next hearing is the case is on February 23. Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Dear Bossip: She Won’t Do What She Did to Get Me

Bossip staff I have a problem I’d like to vent and hopefully get some solid advice. I’ve been with my lady for about 3 years and in the beginning she the one I thought I’d marry. She cooked, she cleaned, she did my laundry and was very attentive to my needs. Before I go any further this was not a one way street, I did all the things she asked of me as well. Not to mention when she decided to go back to school to finish her degree I supported her. She didn’t need or want anything and didn’t pressure her to work because I wanted her to finish and it seems like that’s the only reason she did those things because she was solely dependent on me. Now that she’s working she doesn’t cook or clean or care about me. I’m not trying to sound sensitive because I know that working and juggling household duties is hard. I help when I can by cooking occasionally ordering takeout and have cleaning people come in once a month to do deep cleaning. I do this because I want spend time with her make time to be with her but she doesn’t want to be bothered. I come home as ask for what’s for dinner and she says she already ate. She’ll do her laundry only and let mine pile up. I don’t know what Iv’e done to her to make her lose interest so dramatically but I honestly don’t know what else to do. She’s not doing what she did to catch my attention and shows little interest in continuing. I think it’s mean and misleading and I feel like I should cut my losses now. What do you think I should do? Dear sir, thank you for writing in and sharing your story! So you supported your woman as a good man should and she’s now decided to abandon the qualities that you once admired about her? That’s, surely, a hard pill to swallow. At this point, however, it seems like the best thing to do would be to really explore how committed the both of you are to making you relationship work if it’s salvageable. Three years is lot of time to invest so this is why you need to know if you should move on or make strides to make it work. It make or break time but ti does take two and no one has time to waste! While you may not understand why she no longer cooks, cleans and the like, you should retrace your steps and see if you can pinpoint at what point in the relationship she stopped doing these things and what may have triggered the change. What you may come to find is that her changes may not have anything do with you. She may just be at a point in her life where she doesn’t know what she wants in a relationship, in her career or otherwise. She may not want the responsibility of making sure your fed and your clothes and house are clean, you know? So if you want to communicate with her on this matter, start by not taking it personal and find out where her head is in general, then you can get to the crust of the issues and how they directly affect yours and her togetherness. So, sir, here’s the deal. You can never gauge if you and your partner are going to grow together or just never know the outcome. While it was very noble of you to support her while she was in school, pursuing her degree and career, she may be overwhelmed with juggling the home and career. She may be feeling like she’s under pressure to perform both at the job and at the house despite all your overtures to relieve her from time to time. So, don’t take it personal sit and have a talk with her about where she is in her thought process before you even talk about the relationship because, again, it may not have anything to do with you. Hope this helps! Good luck to you sir … good luck! What are you thoughs, Bossip Fam? Pleas share them below! Remember to e-mail all topic suggestions, feedback and questions to loveandrelationships@bossip.com !
