MTV News remembers ‘Jackass’ daredevil Ryan Dunn, Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr and Cali Swag District’s M-Bone, among others. They were at different stages in their careers — some just starting to rise, others already legends — but all left a distinct mark on pop culture, and their deaths affected us deeply. Beloved hip-hop icons Nate Dogg and Heavy D influenced the generations of artists who followed them. Nate (born Nathaniel Hale) died at age 41 after suffering several health setbacks related to a stroke. One of the key players in the birth of the West Coast G-Funk sound, the crooner’s silky smooth vocals touched classic tracks from Snoop Dogg and Warren G to 50 Cent and Ludacris. Fun-loving Heavy D, a major force in the New Jack Swing era, had hits with songs like “We Found Love” and “Nuttin’ But Love,” but he had also branched out into film and theater. Like Amy Winehouse, who also died this year at the age of 27, Starr’s talent was often overshadowed by dependency on alcohol and drugs. Gun violence claimed the life of 22-year-old Montae Talbert, the Cali Swag District dancer otherwise known as M-Bone . And Australian actor Andy Whitfield , who got his big break when he was cast as the lead in the Starz TV series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” was 39 when he succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Finally, the MTV family mourned the death of “Jackass” daredevil and “Viva La Bam” star Ryan Dunn . The 34-year-old died on a rural Pennsylvania road along with his 30-year-old passenger, Zachary Hartwell, when their car slammed into a guardrail and caught fire. Two Dutch TV hosts claim they ate chunks of each other’s flesh because they wanted to find out what human meat tastes like, all in front of a studio audience. The feat will air on Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno’s new show, “Preojfkonijen,” which translates to “Test Rabbits.” “The punchline of the show is to get really simple answers on stupid questions, such as, ‘Can you shave with ketchup’ or ‘Can you drive blind?’” Storm told ABCNews.com. “And we wanted to find out how human flesh tasted.” A chef fried a hunk of Storm’s buttocks, and a piece of Zeno’s abdomen, both carved off earlier by a surgeon, in a pan with sunflower oil, skipping salt and pepper to preserve the meat’s natural taste. Then the daring duo dug in. “We went to the butcher, the surgeon and the studio, then we looked at each other and just ate it,” Storm said. “The special thing was, it was his flesh, of course.” Neither was too impressed by the taste of human flesh, they told ABCNews.com. “Nothing is really that special when you’re talking about the taste of meat,” Storm said in the interview. “But it is weird to look into the eyes of a friend when you are chewing on his belly.” The stunt, which will air Wednesday in the Netherlands, was worth it, Storm said. “It was just a few centimeters of meat,” he told the website. “And now I have a good story about that scar.” Scuse us for a moment… While we go hurl. TMZ spoke with Stephen Laine — an inventory manager for a food company who was married to Vanessa’s mother from 1990 to 2003 … and helped raise Vanessa from a child into adulthood. Laine tells us, “Her mother taught her well to wait for the ten-year mark [before divorcing].” He explains, “In California … it’s considered a long term marriage and then she gets paid for life or until she remarries … just like her mother is doing to me.” DAAAAAMN! Over two decades ago my only knowledge of hip hop–or better yet “rap”–revolved literally on my first vinyl album, a compilation of the Sugar Hill Gang’s record label greatest hits featuring Grand Master Flash, Whodini, The Sugar Hill Gang and a cast of others not even worth mentioning. That album would take a back seat to the only album that mattered to me for years to come and still ranks on my top 10 of all time. Paid in Full by all accounts did what Nirvana’s Nevermind did to the music landscape back in 87 and is widely considered to every bit as influential and important as the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band . Musically it broke open the vault to every James Brown beat ever made and all but killed the common theme of sampling disco and rock albums to create the music for hip hop artists to rhyme to. Before Rakim blessed the mic, the themes of hip hop were fairly light-hearted concentrating primarily on party themes and less thought provoking rhymes. While Run DMC was screaming about being Kings of Rock , Rakim challenged our minds and challenged emcees to put more thought and emphasis on lyrics while charting his way to being labeled God Mc. “I take 7 emcees put em in line, add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme, it will take 7 more before I go for mine and that’s 21 emcees ate up at the same time.” – “My Melody” Few other hip-hop albums have been sampled more or listed in the top ten as Paid in Full . Stetsasonic, Gang Starr, 2pac, NWA, Lord Finesse, Warren G, Smif-N-Wessun, Birdman, Lil Wayne, Girl Talk and so on have all sampled Paid in Full . Back in ‘87 hip-hop still had a negative view from the critics and was really thought to be a fad that would soon die. It was perceived as crude noise with no real background or foundation for credibility when compared to other genres, which at most had their ties to soul, jazz or rock. Like Punk Rock the previous decade you had a lot of acts and crew who just simply had no talent or business picking up a microphone hopping on the scene and further contributing to the assertion that the fad would soon die. Paid In Full ushered in a new era of rap by throwing out all the whack conventions and made emcees go back and rethink their careers. Almost 25 years later Rakim still ranks up there in every artists top list of G.O.A.T. Kanye and Jay-Z may have you watching the throne but all kings and queens ( you can decide who’s who) must answer to a higher power. Paid in Full, is the best and most influential album ever made and there’s nothing wrong with coming in second to it. Sad, sad, news out of New Orleans. Remember the viral video of a teenager getting spanked on Youtube for his gang affiliations? Well, the once-comical story took a horrible turn. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said Michael Taylor, 16, was found shot to death shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area. Taylor had been shot multiple times. Sgt. Larry Dyess, JPSO spokesman, told the Times-Picayune that authorities had no suspect or motive in the incident. Taylor’s mother, Kimberly Ward, told the newspaper that she kept strict tabs on her son, even making him stay on the sidewalk in eyesight of their home when he went outside. The night of the shooting, she said, Taylor received a text message from a friend at about 8 p.m. and went outside to chat. “She said she called him back inside a few minutes later to find out what was going on, and he told her he was just talking and went back outside. A few minutes later, her daughter received a text message saying that Taylor had been shot, and then another saying he was dead,” the newspaper reported. “Ward said she rushed from the house, driving around the neighborhood looking for her son, but didn’t find him until she was coming back to her apartment complex. That’s when she saw his body on the cold sidewalk, clad in the red sweatshirt she’d noticed when he left the house. “I came home and saw my son on the ground,” Ward said. There aren’t any suspects in the case. It’s just so sad. We thought that maybe the embarrassing video would help him get on the right path. This just brings tears to our eyes. A man who allegedly fired shots at the White House in attempt to kill President Barack Obama in November is due back in court. The Idaho native, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, is due back in court for a hearing on Wednesday. The evening of Nov. 11, when Obama was out of town, Ortega allegedly fired an assault rifle at the White House. Ballistic glass stopped one of the bullets from smashing through a window of the living quarters of the executive mansion. People who know Ortega said he acted strangely in the months before the incident. They suggested he believed he was Jesus and used to call Obama “the devil.” Preliminary psychiatric screening found him competent to stand trial but federal prosecutors are asking for further extensive tests.
