Holland’s football future is totally safe with rich crop of youngsters | Thomas Watt

There are some fine young players in the Netherlands to keep Holland among the leading powers beyond the World Cup The days of totaalvoetbal are long gone but have always cast a long shadow over the Oranje, never more so than when a tournament comes around. No other European side are expected to do more than just win their matches; the Dutch have a brand of football which the world expects to see. The dominant philosophy at this year’s tournament has been “win at all costs”, while the English have long had an attitude of “it isn’t enough to win, others must lose”. The Netherlands and Brazil are arguably the only remaining nations where the attitude is “win and win well”. Indeed, the great Uruguayan football philosopher Eduardo Galeano described the Oranje as “the Latin American team I like the best”, before going on to suggest that they were an “orange fire that flitted back and forth, fanned by an all-knowing breeze that sped it forward and pulled it back”. The class of 2010 may be more pragmatic, with slightly more emphasis on not conceding goals, but the spirit of ’74 remains part of the national make-up. They will always be one of the more entertaining sides, even in an era of more conservative football. Never has an international tournament had quite so many teams that fit Johan Cruyff’s description: “They can never beat you, but you can lose against them.” • Follow the Guardian’s World Cup team on Twitter • Sign up to play our great Fantasy Football game • Stats centre: Get the lowdown on every player • The latest team-by-team news, features and more To borrow a phrase, Holland in a World Cup are like the proverbial box of chocolates. Not only do you not know what you are going to get, but they are varied, luxurious, melt in the heat, and the orange one is everybody’s second favourite. The squad which Bert van Marwijk has assembled are no different; a temperamental, unpredictable, often flamboyant group of players, with more collective experience than any previous Dutch squad. What is clear is that this is the last chance for many of their number. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has already stated that he will retire after the finals. Andre Ooijer will likely play his final internationals before a move to Roda JC, while Mathijsen, Boulahrouz, Braafheid, Van Bommel and Kuyt will all be the wrong side of 30 by Brazil 2014. The Euro 2012 campaign may well see the changing of the guard, but the Dutch will not be hindered as their system remains loosely the same, and the nation produces like-for-like replacements to fit that system. There are, of course, quality reinforcements in the current squad (who may or may not have one eye on a British TV broadcasting job come World Cup 2026). Eljero Elia looked spritely against Denmark and were Van Marwijk a more adventurous coach the young Hamburg winger would certainly start against Japan on Saturday. Elia won the 2009 Johan Cruyff Prize (the Eredivisie Young Player of the Year) while at FC Twente, and earned himself a move to Hamburg last summer. The transfer to the Bundesliga looks to have settled him, as his form was so good it even earned him a place in the lucrative Honigstein Team of the Season . Ibrahim Afellay is a relative veteran at 24, not least because he has been playing regularly for PSV for the last six years. Equally capable on the wing or in the centre of the park, he is lightning quick, possesses amazing vision and has been attracting attention from Europe’s big guns for some years. Afellay is joined in South Africa by Gregory van der Wiel, Ajax’s marauding right-back and last season’s Eredivisie Young Player of the Year. At only 22, Van der Wiel has attracted favourable comparisons with Michael Reiziger (when he was good, not the jigsaw-kneed journeyman Middlesbrough fans got). Both Afellay and Van der Wiel are expected to follow Elia out of the Eredivisie this summer, with England a likely destination. The Eredivisie has been seen as a fertile feeding/breeding ground for English sides for some time, and there are a number of highly rated youngsters already with Premier League clubs. Chelsea will send the 18-year-old Jeffrey Bruma on loan next season (most likely to Twente), and his team-mate Patrick van Aanholt may well follow him. Arsenal look set to sign Kyle Ebecilio, Bruma’s 16-year-old cousin, to add to their own orange contingent. It is clear that the future Dutch stars will most likely move abroad, but who are the boys most likely become stars within the Netherlands? Jeremain Lens was in the provisional squad for the World Cup, and was unfortunate not to have made the final 23. After a successful season in which he managed 12 goals in 20 starts, Lens opted to move from AZ Alkmaar to PSV Eindhoven, where he is seen as the long-term replacement for Danko Lazovic. The Dutch may also find that they have a ready-made replacement for Mark van Bommel in the 23-year-old Twente midfielder Wout Brama, already on the fringes of the national side, or Groningen’s tough-tackling Danny Holla. Brama’s team-mate Luuk de Jong – younger brother of Ajax’s Siem – is expected to take over from Blaise Nkufo in leading the Twente line next season and both brothers are tipped to make an impact. The fate of the Dutch national side is perennially held in the hands of the two clubs with the finest youth systems in the land. Ajax and Feyenoord produced more than half of the 1974 World Cup squad and thirteen of the current squad owe some part of their education to one of the two Klassieker rivals. In the current Feyenoord squad there are two young players who will be lighting up a far bigger stage soon. Leroy Fer anchors the Rotterdam side’s midfield, and looks set to develop into an Edgar Davids-style box-to-box midfielder. Ferocious in the tackle, sensible with possession and capable of driving forward runs, the 20-year-old has been singled out by his captain, Van Bronckhorst, as one of the best players in the side. He is joined in midfield by Georginio Wijnaldum, named by Fifa as one of the 40 best young talents in the world. Wijnaldum was full-back tormentor-in-chief last season, and possesses a Bergkamp-sized bag of tricks, flicks and party pieces. The 19-year-old is also deceptively strong and direct, capable of riding challenges and holding off defenders. If words don’t do justice to his potential, see for yourselves. Although he has only featured in three games for the men from De club van Zuid , remember the name Luc Castaignos. As a quick and skilful striker Castaignos has been a revelation for the Dutch Under-17s squad, finishing top scorer at last year’s European Championship. In doing so, he broke the all-time goalscoring record for the Dutch at that level, overtaking the tally jointly held by Collins John and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Of course, being a young talented Dutch striker, he has been scouted by Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, Internazionale, Arsenal, blah, blah, blah … but a couple of good seasons in the Eredivisie would surely be more beneficial than an early move abroad. Ajax continue their fine tradition of discovering and nurturing the finest young talent in the world. In Vurnon Anita they may have unearthed the long-term replacement for Van Bronckhorst. The young left-back has kept two internationals on the bench this season, and at only 21 he has five years of first-team experience. Although he was one of the unfortunates cut from the provisional squad for 2010, Anita will be hoping to be first-choice left-back in time for the 2012 European Championship. There are also high hopes that Daley Blind can replicate at least some of the success his father, Danny, had at club and country level, while the winger Jeffrey Sarpong has flirted with the first team and spent last year on loan at NEC. Arguably the finest prospect of all is Siem de Jong, an attack-minded midfielder in the Sneijder/Van der Vaart mould. De Jong managed 15 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions last year, a record which will not be without admirers. Of course the best result for the Netherlands could be that these youngsters stay where they are and learn their craft properly, rather than risk moving too early. Dutch football is always producing “the next big thing”, but such players as Nacer Barazite, Ryan Babel, Marvin Emnes, Vincent van den Berg and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie have risked football purgatory by moving abroad early in their careers. But, as the saying goes, the future is bright. The future is … Holland Eredivisie World Cup 2010 Group E World Cup 2010 guardian.co.uk

Laura Robson has attitude to excel at Wimbledon says Lindsay Davenport

• Laura Robson backed to rise above interview controversy • ‘I like her desire and her work ethic’ If anyone starts singing Tell Laura I Love Her in the women’s locker room at Wimbledon this year, it will be laced with sarcasm. Only her natural charm enabled Laura Robson, the 16-year-old Londoner, to limit the damage of her recent Vogue interview, in which she dismissed some of the girls on the circuit as “sluts” who “go with every guy”, a remark for which she apologised and insisted was taken out of context. The nudge-nudge sniggers doing the rounds in tennis subsequently questioned not the veracity of the allegation but why it was exclusively trained on heterosexual activity. Remarks such as, “Do you think we will have an all-lesbian final this summer?” raised the usual “fnah-fnah”. The tennis circuit may be marketed as a whistle-clean marketing opportunity, but it is as prone to human frailty, back-biting and hypocrisy as any other walk of life. Shenanigans aside, the substance of Robson’s observation revealed more about her own upright views and Home Counties upbringing than it did about her intended targets. It also showed a steeliness of character and independence that might stand her in good stead for as long as she lasts in the tournament – not to mention her career – against some of these flighty young things from backgrounds of lesser righteousness. Laura is a wild card here in more ways than one. Lindsay Davenport also brought with her to the imposing halls of Wimbledon the values and habits of a spotless middle-class background, winning the championship from nowhere and gracing the top of the game earlier this decade with the sort of low-key Californian charm that almost went unnoticed. “I’m not that interesting!” she insists. “I’m just very normal, on an even keel. I never had tons of friends on tour. I was quiet and went about my business. To be honest, it wasn’t a huge story to tell.” But Davenport, who just turned 34 and returns to Wimbledon this year in the mixed doubles with Bob Bryan, alongside her broadcasting duties with the BBC, recognises the pressures on young players and sounded a warning for Robson and the other “poppets”. “Some of them can’t handle the world in general. A great example is Nicole Vaidisova, such a great player. Whether it was the money or the lifestyle, she had a meltdown. It’s a shame she’s still not out there winning. There are a lot of components you have to be comfortable with: winning, losing, the media, travelling, the people around you. Not a lot of players have done it successfully for a long period of time.” The pressures on Robson, she says, are multiplied by the expectations of a nation, especially at Wimbledon. “I couldn’t imagine being from a country where all the pressure is on a particular player. I don’t know if I could have handled it, the way the media would have been so intense, especially on a teenage girl like Laura – and I also didn’t have people following me or reporting on my every move.” So, where did this nice, unblemished survivor of the system, a former world No1, think Robson’s tennis was at the moment? “Hmm … developing. She’s obviously got a pretty long way to go to get up to the top but, from everything I’ve heard about her, she works very hard. From what I’ve seen about her as a player, she’s trying to develop a bigger weapon – and it does take a certain amount of time to get comfortable on the tour – comfortable winning matches, managing your schedule. “But she’s great. I like her attitude, I like her desire and her work ethic. She also has to learn how to lose. Some times you lose more than you win. It’s about handling losses and trying to turn them into positives. You get out into the big leagues and there’s a period of adjustment to be made. You’ve got to handle it.” Davenport says, though, that the younger girls are finding it tougher than they used to – partly because older players are extending their careers, notably Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, not to mention the Williams sisters. “I read a stat that [Caroline] Wozniacki is the only teenager in the top 25. We have a couple who just turned 20. In the history of women’s tennis, it never happened. There’s always been someone 16 or 17 that’s burst on to the scene and gone to the top. “The sport has become more athletic, so it favours some players later in their development. They’re stronger, faster, not just blessed with phenomenal skills. It’s nice to see some players in their 30s [doing well], because players I grew up with pretty much all retired in their 20s. It shows a lot of people in other sports that we can still play, even though we’re a little bit older.” And wiser, maybe. Laura Robson Wimbledon Tennis Kevin Mitchell guardian.co.uk

2010 MTV Movie Awards Dominated By ‘New Moon,’ Sandra Bullock, Les Grossman

Aziz Ansari led the wildly hilarious (and frequently emotional) awards show. By Josh Wigler Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With five awards for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” zilch for “Avatar,” visually insane dance numbers, gut-busting parodies and so much more, the 2010 MTV Movie Awards made for a wildly hilarious, frequently emotional and shockingly vulgar night. The evening kicked off with media mogul Les Grossman , who lived up to his fiery reputation by pushing popular actors like Will Smith and Michael Cera down some surprising new career paths. One such idea was “Bad Ass Cops,” a police-themed action adventure starring “Twilight” leading men Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. But Grossman’s time in the spotlight was quickly yanked away by host Aziz Ansari , who followed up with some segments of his own, including one that put him in the tragic shoes of Claireece “Precious” Jones. The host finally took the stage thanks to an introduction made by music sensation Justin Bieber, prompting Ansari to launch into an opening comedy act that set the tone for the rest of the hilarious evening. Part of Ansari’s monologue dwelled on the pervasive popularity of “Twilight,” a notion that was decisively affirmed when Kristen Stewart kicked off the awards portion of the show by winning Best Female Performance for her portrayal of Bella Swan in the supernatural-romance franchise. Even the award for Breakthrough Performance went to Anna Kendrick, who won for “Up in the Air” but got her break in the “Twilight Saga.” Presenters and “Get Him to the Greek” co-stars Jonah Hill and Russell Brand embarked on an epic Team Jacob vs. Team Edward debate that left Sean “Diddy” Combs fully confused. That wasn’t the only hilarious moment from the “Greek” stars, as Hill and Brand engaged in a full-on lip-locking assault during a special Kiss Cam segment that also claimed Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. But the most memorable kiss of the evening belonged to Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson , as they shared a quick smooch during Bullock’s acceptance of the Generation Award. Indeed, Bullock’s acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the evening, marking her first major public appearance since news broke of husband Jesse James’ infidelity. To that end, Bullock wanted to clear the air on certain rumors: She is not dead, everyone has cellulite “not just me,” and paparazzi photographers need more flattering lenses. Taking a more serious tone, Bullock emphasized that even in light of her Generation Award, something that typically goes to “old people” as they wind down their careers, as she put it, she has no plans of leaving the spotlight. “No matter what you might have heard or read lately, I love what I do, and I’m not going anywhere,” she said, adding that everyone in the audience should say a prayer for those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf. Her emotional speech was matched only by “The Hangover” actor Ken Jeong’s own acceptance of the Best WTF Moment award. Jeong broke down in tears recounting his wife’s battle with breast cancer. “She taught me that life is short and you shouldn’t be afraid to take chances,” the choked-up Jeong announced, happily revealing that his wife has been cancer-free for two years now. Beyond Bullock and Jeong’s heartfelt speeches, the show featured some very different but no less intense moments, thanks to performances of Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls,” Christina Aguilera’s medley of songs from her upcoming album Bionic (complete with a glowing heart on her underwear) and the return of Les Grossman in a shockingly well-choreographed dance number opposite Jennifer Lopez. But the biggest laughs of the night came from Team Aziz. The host provided viewers with a terrific “Human Giant” reunion alongside Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer in a sketch titled “Stunt Kidz.” He also appeared as Taavon, a tough-as-nails swagger coach (who can only sit on purple chairs) hired to impart swagger tips to comedian Zach Galifianakis, an effort that paid off, as the “Hangover” comedian ultimately won the award for Best Comedic Performance. Ansari as Taavon accepted the award on Galifianakis’ behalf. Ansari also paved the way for one of the most foulmouthed Movie Awards in the ceremony’s history. Following Bullock’s acknowledgement of the oil spill in the Gulf region, Ansari wildly shouted “f— you, BP” numerous times as he sang an R. Kelly-style tribute to “Avatar.” But his filthy language paled in comparison to Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell’s, as the stars of “The Other Guys” dangled from the theater’s ceiling, frantically cursing at their situation. The incessant swearing of the show’s many guests didn’t go unnoticed by actor Peter Facinelli. While accepting the Best Movie award for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” Carlisle Cullen dropped some F-bombs of his own and two of them managed to slip past the censors, to the surprise of many. Less surprising, to Ansari at least, was the virtual awards sweep made by “New Moon.” The host may have over-exaggerated by declaring that ” ‘Twilight’ won everything,” but the franchise’s second installment did emerge as the evening’s greatest winner with victories in the Best Movie, Best Male Performance, Best Female Performance, Best Kiss and Global Star categories. “The Hangover” was the second most successful film with wins for Best Comedic Performance and Best WTF Moment, while “Avatar” walked away without a single award to its name. By Shaheem Reid Raekwon Photo: Graham Denholm/ Getty Images Raekwon the Chef saw Nas’ comments from earlier this week about not answering the bell for an Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. II cameo and is looking forward to working with Esco again in the future. “I respect that,” Rae told MTV News. “I know he was going through a lot of trial and error when we was trying to get him to do his thing [on my album]. But, you know, that’s my dude. I know, regardless of whatever, I know he’s down for me, and we’ll get it poppin’ soon. If that’s what it’s gonna be, that’s what it’s gonna be.” Despite public speculation, Rae said he didn’t have specific plans to make a sequel to the song “Verbal Intercourse.” “It wasn’t even about reinventing ‘Verbal Intercourse,’ ” Rae said about his plans for Nas on Linx II. “It was about, he was there for the first album. When I think about us making this album, a lot of people, a lot of my fans knew he was down with me on the first [ Cuban Linx ] album. I wanted to really make it happen for the sake of the fans as well as the relationship. Me and him, we always been cool. We always looked at our styles as being real similar. So I felt it was a great move. I guess, at the time, he couldn’t be available. I understand. I know how it gets sometime. But at the end of the day, it’s always good to know that we still the same cats from 10 years ago. That’s how I am. I don’t change the face of who I am because of no certain situations in the game, because our careers go where they go. If you was down with me from the door, I’m still the same old G. I’m sure he feels the same way. Like I said, ain’t no love lost. If we do it again, we gonna make it tight and do what we supposed to do.” Now it’s just a matter of when the two lock in the lab. Rae said his upcoming Wu-Tang vs. Shaolin LP, scheduled for September, is practically done. “This album right here, I’m crazy happy about,” Rae said. “This sh– is mean. I’m sitting here listening to it. You never know, but I kinda already got this one in the bag, so he’s probably gonna miss this one. But I’mma definitely hold him to something I feel the fans will go crazy for. But this [new album] is already in the bag. I’m trying to get this to the world ASAP. ‘Sex And The City 2’ Star Cynthia Nixon Calls Newsweek Article ‘Cruel’

‘I think it’s so horrible,’ ‘Sex and the City’ star says of article that claims gay actors can’t play straight roles. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Cynthia Nixon Photo: MTV News There has been much debate over a recent Newsweek article in which the author attempts to make the case that gay actors can’t play straight. In it, he uses Sean Hayes, star of “Promises, Promises” on Broadway, and “Glee” actor Jonathan Groff as examples of gay actors who didn’t leave him convinced they could act straight in their roles. The article has caused everyone from Kristin Chenoweth , who has worked on both projects, to “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy to speak out on the subject. Even the article’s author, Ramin Setoodeh, who is gay himself, has responded, in an attempt to defend his argument . Now, “Sex and the City 2” star Cynthia Nixon, who came out and began dating her partner, Christine Marinoni, in 2004, is also commenting on the article, noting that it was a “cruel” blanket statement to make about gay actors. “I think it’s horrible. I think it’s so horrible, and I think it’s really, really, really terrific that there has been such an enormous response and so much back-and-forth and discussion about it and people trying to explain to this gentleman why they’re so upset about what he wrote,” she told MTV News. “I just feel like it’s hard enough to encourage people to come out of the closet, like it’s not going to damage their careers. And when you have someone who is so … it’s not even like he’s negative, he’s making fun of people in a really cruel way. I think it’s really set us back 10 years.”
