By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna in “Rude Boy” Photo: Def Jam Rihanna is returning to her Caribbean roots on her latest single from Rated R, “Rude Boy.” The Barbados-born singer’s earlier songs, like “S.O.S.” and “Dem Haters,” were tinged with island appeal. But since her breakout hit “Umbrella,” Rih Rih has leaned toward pop fare. Now with the release of “Rude Boy,” she’s returning to a familiar sound and created an accompanying visual she describes as one of her best. “It’s really colorful; it’s a pop art video,” Rihanna told MTV Korea. “We shot it all on green screen. Everything was done in post-production. It’s really colorful, really energetic. It was really inspired by my Caribbean roots. I love reggae music. [“Rude Boy”] is a Jamaican term, so our costumes are dancehall-queen-like. It’s a fun video. Probably the most fun video we’ve done so far.” The video recently premiered online and immediately drew comparisons to M.I.A.’s “Boyz” clip and Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance.” With its mix of dashing color and feisty attitude, the homage is apparent. The “Rude Boy” video and track also may be a preview of what Rihanna’s next album might sound like. She’s won critical praise for Rated R, the dark and deeply personal collection inspired by the aftermath of her assault by Chris Brown and subsequent breakup. For her next project, however, Rihanna said she hopes to keep the production tempo of her latest offering but mix it with more upbeat songwriting . ” Rated R — I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna explained. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. According to a spokesperson for the show, last season’s fourth-place finisher, flame-haired rocker Allison Iraheta, will perform her latest single, “Scars,” on the one-hour broadcast. She’ll likely be a ray of sunshine on an otherwise tense 60 minutes during which four of the top 24 finishers will see their dreams of stardom dashed as the first two men and women semifinalists will be sent packing. The performance will make Iraheta’s first trip back to the “Idol” stage since she was eliminated last spring. It could also provide a boost for the sales of Iraheta’s modestly selling debut, Just Like You, which debuted at #31 in December before sliding out of the top 200 just five weeks later, with sales to date totaling less than 100,000. Thursday’s elimination episode — which will follow Tuesday night’s performances from the top 12 female finishers and Wednesday night’s turn by the top 12 males — will also see the return of 2009 champ Kris Allen. The Arkansas singer will perform and also share some of the footage he shot on a recent trip to Haiti in an effort to raise awareness of the United Nation Foundation’s work in the Caribbean nation in the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake. The Foundation is one of the organizations that will benefit from this year’s “Idol Gives Back” special (April 21) and viewers will be asked to make donations online or by text during the episode. The six groups — Oxfam America, Partners In Health, the American Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Programme and Yele Haiti Foundation, submitted proposals for what they intend to do with the funds last week. The first installment was just over half of the $66 million that has been pledged so far in the effort to raise money following the January 12 earthquake in Haiti that leveled much of the Caribbean island nation’s capital of Port-au-Prince. According to an announcement of the $35 million in funding, the money was released following an intensive review process and guidance from the “Hope for Haiti Now” Advisory Committee and Bridgespan, a management consulting group that advises nonprofits. The funds are earmarked for immediate disaster relief and reconstruction and recovery efforts in Haiti. The next allocation of funds is planned for May after all donations have been received.
