Disney’s Mysterious ‘1952’ Morphs Into ‘Tomorrowland’

From yester-year – in this case, 1952 – to tomorrow, Disney is so far only offering a glimpse into Brad Bird ‘s live-action feature in the form of a new title. Previously known as 1952 , the studio said it will now be titled Tomorrowland , just like the land meant to be a peak into the future. Tomorrowland was one of the five “original lands” that debuted with the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California in 1955. George Clooney will star in the film, which Damon Lindelof ( Prometheus ) and Bird co-wrote and is slated for a mid-December 2014 release. Home to famed attractions, Space Mountain and Star Tours, perhaps Tomorrowland holds secrets about the film version of its namesake. But the studio is maintaining a shroud of mystery though throwing out tidbits. Its official announcement follows: The Walt Disney Studios has announced that its live-action release previously known as 1952 will be titled Tomorrowland. The film will be released domestically on December 19, 2014. George Clooney ( The Descendants ) is set to star. Tomorrowland is written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird from a concept by Lindelof and Jeff Jensen. Lindelof ( Star Trek , Lost ,  Prometheus ) will produce and Bird ( The Incredibles ,  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ) will produce and direct. Disney attractions have begat Disney blockbusters through the years. Longtime classic ride Pirates of the Caribbean of course morphed into a long-running franchise that has starred Johnny Depp worth billions and Guillermo del Toro is working on a second installment of the Haunted Mansion , which first hit theaters in 2003. Classic mountaintop attraction, the Matterhorn in Disneyland’s Fantasyland is said to be the basis for a project titled The Hill . [ Source: THR ]

The meetings will take place Thursday and Friday as the Obama Administration plans proposals for gun policy after the December Newtown, Conn. school shootings, Variety reports . Jeffersons Star Ned Wertimer Dies at 89 Wertimer, who played Ralph the Dorrman for 11 seasons on The Jeffersons , died January 2nd in an L.A. nursing home after complications from a fall. Wertimer’s other credits included The Mary Tyler Moore Show , Mork & Mindy , Gun Smoke and several small film roles including 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End , TV Guide reports . Quentin Tarantino Wants To Work With Johnny Depp If He Writes ‘Right Character’

Even as he anticipated the sunset of his filmmaking career recently, Quentin Tarantino is looking ahead to who he’d like to work with, and Johnny Depp tops the list. The Django Unchained director said he’d like Depp to star in a future pic, but will only cement plans once he’s written the perfect part for the Pirates of the Caribbean actor. We’ve talked about it for years. Not that we get together and talk about it for years, but from time to time.” The two appear to have mutually high esteem for the other, according to Tarantino. But the key is finding the right moment. “We’re obviously fans of each other,” he said according to Contactmusic.com. “I just need to write the right character that I think Johnny would be the right guy to do it with. And if he agrees, then we’ll do it, and then it’ll be magical.” Continuing, Tarantino shared that he hasn’t as of yet, “written the perfect character for Johnny Depp as of yet. Maybe someday I will, maybe someday I won’t. We’ll see.” Tarantino also said he’d like to work with Meryl Streep and Michael Caine. The filmmaker recently unveiled plans for a new movie, tentatively titled Killer Crow , which would again center on people rising up against their overlords, forming a trilogy with the current Django Unchained and 2009’s Inglorious Basterds . Boy awarded $6.9 million

A jury has ruled that the Los Angeles Unified School District must pay $6.9 million to a boy molested by his elementary school teacher. The award Tuesday is among the largest for a single victim in the history of the district, and comes as it seeks to settle s ex abuse suits involving nearly 200 plaintiffs stemming from high-profile allegations against a teacher at Miramonte Elementary School. The Los Angeles Times reports the jury found the district liable for the 2008 molestation by teacher

Twilight Finale Flirted With An R-Rating

There’s a ballyhooed sex scene between Bella and Edward that received a respectable 8 on ML’s Scream-O-Meter , but it apparently was some violence that almost earned Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which would have caused quite a stir and conundrums in Twi-hard Land, which still counts quite a large crowd of teens among its ranks (not that that crafty crowd wouldn’t have found a way). Still, the ” Restricted: Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian ” would smack of potential box office blues for a franchise riding on a gangbuster turn-out and a final cash infusion for Summit, the franchise’s distributor. Initially, Breaking Dawn Part 2 received the R because of some extreme violence by way of beheadings, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Certainly, with any other movie, there are a thousand ways to kill people,” director Bill Condon told the Times. “With this one, it’s a variation on the same theme. If they were going to be offended by the idea of beheadings, we would have had no movie.” But the MPAA holds the ratings whip and the filmmaker said that some parts of the film were modified in order to give the multi-billion dollar franchise’s finale a more access-friendly PG-13 (The offending ‘R’ scenes should make for great marketing come DVD time at the end of the day). Sill, this isn’t the first time the world’s favorite vampires have sashayed with the only over 17 threat. Breaking Dawn Part 1 nearly received the R due to a sex scene (sex is often more titillating to the MPAA than violence which it more frequently tolerates, so those beheadings must’ve been doozies!) Kristen Stewart told Glamour that the original sex scenes in the first Breaking Dawn had even surprised her. “It was so weird, it didn’t even feel like we were doing a Twilight film. I was like, ‘Bella! What are you doing? Wow! What is happening here?!’ It was very surreal. We [originally] got rated R. You Tell Us: Is Channing Tatum Really Sexier Than Robert Pattinson?

So the good news is pouring in for Channing Tatum  today.  In addition to nabbing People’s Sexiest Man Alive  honor, GQ  magazine chose the Magic Mike   star as its Movie Star of the Year, part of its annual Men of the Year issue. That means Tatum and his strong chin will be gracing at least two magazine covers in the coming weeks, and that’s got me wondering: where is the Twi-hard outrage over Robert Pattinson being snubbed?  With the sun finally setting on The Twilight Saga , it’s remarkable that RPatz — who had the crowds thrilling and screaming at the Breaking Dawn Part 2 premiere earlier this week— did not nab Sexiest Man honors once since 2008 when the film franchise debuted. Hugh Jackman graced People’ s cover in 2008; Johnny Depp in 2009; Ryan Reynolds in 2010; and Bradley Cooper  in 2011. Pattinson, who seems more concerned with being an actor than a screen idol, probably isn’t terribly interested in such an accolade, and he’s in good company. Last year, People ‘s decision to choose Cooper over Ryan Gosling sparked quite a furor among Baby Goose’s fans,  along with the rumor that the magazine had actually wanted to put Gosling on the cover but went with Cooper when the Drive actor, who’s all about the work, declined to give them an interview or participate in a photo shoot. ( People and Gosling’s publicist denied this at the time.) Still, I’m betting Pattinson’s fans are feeling miffed right now, and I’d like to gauge the depth of that dissatisfaction by inviting them — and any other lover of big-screen beefcake — to vote for the actor they would crown the sexiest man alive if they were calling the shots at People . I’ve listed five choices, including Tatum, Pattinson and Gosling. The rest is up to you. If you feel there’s a better candidate out there than the available choices, write him in the comments box and I’ll add him to the poll. As for what People ‘s honor will mean for Tatum besides a butt load of publicity, I don’t see any real correlation between People’s coronation and an actor’s career. The year that has passed since Cooper got the People cover has been a good one for the actor, given the success of Limitless and his fine performances in  The Place Beyond The Pines , which will be released next year (and also stars Gosling), and Silver Linings Playbook ,  which opens Friday, and is generating Oscar buzz for the actor. But if you go back to 2010 Sexiest Man Alive Ryan Reynolds , the year that followed his anointing saw him star in the critically savaged Green Lantern,  which, according to Box Office Mojo has only made about $20 million more (worldwide)  than its $200-million production budget.
