What’s Next For The ‘Lost’ Creative Team?

Team Darlton splits up as Damon Lindelof chases ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ and another ‘Star Trek’ film. By Josh Wigler “Lost” co-creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse Photo: MTV News From compelling characters to expertly crafted set pieces, there’s no shortage of reasons why “Lost” tapped into the public consciousness with all the ferocity of a black smoke monster. But one of the biggest reasons the recently concluded series was such a pop-culture phenomenon is the caliber of the creative team behind the show’s scenes. Even as devout “Lost” fans mourn the passing of the series, life goes on in the form of new creative endeavors from the folks responsible for the critically acclaimed jungle mystery. Co-executive producers and show-runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have repeatedly told reporters that they aren’t planning too far ahead beyond concluding “Lost,” but that’s not entirely true … at least not in Lindelof’s case. Alongside “Transformers” collaborators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Lindelof co-wrote the screenplay for “Cowboys & Aliens,” director Jon Favreau’s upcoming comic book adaptation about an alien invasion during the days of the Wild West. Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell star in the feature. Lindelof is also in the process of co-writing a sequel to last summer’s “Star Trek” alongside returning writers Kurtzman and Orci. Plot details remain under wraps, though rumors persist that longtime “Trek” villain Khan will make his return in the sequel, with many fans pointing to “Lost” star Nestor Carbonell as a suitable actor for the role. The rumor remains unconfirmed. Additionally, it’s not known whether original director J.J. Abrams will helm the sequel. Speaking of Abrams, the “Lost” co-creator has plenty of plans up his sleeve, though he admittedly distanced himself from the ABC series in recent years due to a multitude of other commitments. In addition to the “Trek” sequel, Abrams is the director of the recently announced “Super 8,” an enigmatic science-fiction project produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment. Abrams is also planning a small-screen return with “Undercovers,” a new NBC television series about a married couple retired from the espionage game. Abrams and Lindelof aren’t the only ones with post-“Lost” plans, as co-writers Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis collaborated on the screenplay for director Joe Kosinski’s “Tron Legacy,” which arrives in theaters in December of this year. Last month, it was reported that Horowitz and Kitsis have been hired to write a sequel to “Legacy.” Beyond the writers’ room, “Lost” composer Michael Giacchino is keeping himself busy as well. Fresh off his Academy Award victory for his work on “Up,” Giacchino will reunite with Pixar to supply the score for “John Carter of Mars,” the space-spanning science-fiction epic starring Taylor Kitsch in the title role. Even though the creative team behind “Lost” is moving on, fans haven’t seen the last of their work on the already sorely missed franchise. Lindelof and Cuse confirmed to MTV News that there’s one last bit of “Lost” business to take care of: a DVD feature in which Team Darlton will explain some of the most compelling mysteries left unanswered in the series finale. Lost Executive Producers Redefine the Idea of Radio Silence

Many of you might not realize this, but Lost ends this Sunday night. ABC should really be publicizing this more, right? Kidding! The two-and-a-half hour series finale is basically being positioned as the geek Super Bowl: ABC is starting coverage at 7 p.m. and will keep fans tuned in until 1 a.m., when the special Lost edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live — with cast members and three alternate endings — wraps up. Two people who won’t be appearing with Kimmel, though, are Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Like David Chase — The Patron Saint of Finales — the men will go into a self-imposed radio silence following the last frame of Lost as a way to let their work speak for itself. Oh, and also because they have no one left to talk to.

James Franco To Star In ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Prequel

‘Rise of the Apes’ begins filming this summer and hits theaters in June 2011. By Kara Warner James Franco Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images Hot on the heels of the recent announcement that James Franco will return to “General Hospital” for another run, Variety reports that the “Pineapple Express” and “Spider-Man” alum has signed on to star in the “Planet of the Apes” prequel, “Rise of the Apes.” Franco reportedly beat out a “number of Hollywood’s young elite actors for the coveted role” in the prequel, which is said to be an origin story set in present-day San Francisco. According to the industry publication, the plot centers on the aftermath of man’s experiments with genetic engineering that lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Franco is set to play a young, driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in that war. The production is scheduled to begin filming July 5 and will be released June 24, 2011. As one of the many successful “Freaks and Geeks” alums, Franco has made a slew of creative career choices of late. In 2008, he enrolled in Columbia University’s MFA Writing Program and New York University’s film school. In March of this year, it was announced Franco had been admitted into Yale’s Ph.D. program in English. Acting-wise, his second run on “General Hospital” (the first of which was met with plenty of raised brows and questions) begins airing June 30. He returns to the soap as a creepy artist/ alleged murderer named Franco. He was recently seen in the Steve Carell/ Tina Fey comedy “Date Night.” This summer, he appears in the movie “Eat Pray Love,” starring Julia Roberts, and the upcoming Danny Boyle movie “127 Hours.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Lost’ Writers Talk ‘Enormously Satisfying’ Series Finale

‘The closer we got [to the end], the more confident we became that it was the right ending,’ Damon Lindelof says. By Kara Warner “Lost” co-creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse Photo: MTV News Even with the series’ end so near in sight, “Lost” executive producers and writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are particularly careful to not reveal too much about the finale of their hugely popular TV show. Especially when it comes to talking with fans and, most importantly, the media. When MTV caught up with Lindelof and Cuse recently, they equated finishing and finally watching the series finale to buying someone a birthday present too early and having to wait for them to open it. “By the time their birthday rolls around you’re sort of like, ‘Are they even going to like this anymore? Do they already have one?’ But that never happened with us,” Lindelof revealed. “The closer we got [to the end], the more confident we became that it was the right ending. We probably watched the last scene of the show 40 or 50 times in the editing room, trying to cross every ‘T’ and dot every ‘I.’ It was enormously satisfying for us.” Lindelof wisely emphasized the “us” aspect, knowing that with the end of such a popular, theorized and agonized-over show, there is no way to please everyone. ABC begins its “Lost” series finale celebration/send-off on Saturday, May 22, when it will re-air the original two-hour pilot from 2004 from 8-10 p.m., including a “pop-up” version with enhanced trivia and facts about the $10 million episode directed by J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek”). The two-and-a-half hour “Lost” series finale airs Sunday, May 23, from 9-11:30 p.m.

Marilyn Manson Pays Watercolor Tribute to Lost

Though I was feeling a little down on Lost yesterday when executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse told HitFix that they had no plans to solve one of the show’s still-outstanding mysteries (just who was on the other end of that outrigger shootout last season?), I’ve found my fannish tendencies revived today by a most unlikely source: Marilyn Manson. The shock rocker painted a portrait of Lost’s John Locke for his bassist, Twiggy Ramirez, and while I might have preferred a watercolor Lapidus , this will do in a pinch. Who Deserves to Win RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Some reality competition shows are over the hill — and it shows — but the comparatively young RuPaul’s Drag Race is so fun and fresh-faced that it doesn’t even need to make use of its own gauzy lenses. Tonight, we’ll find out whether Jujubee, Raven, or Tyra Sanchez will take home the top prize, and frankly, I’m more invested in this outcome than I ever was in the shows that Drag Race parodies (like America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway ). Here’s what the three remaining queens have going for and against them:

Leaked: Lost Season Finale Call Sheet Gives Away Some Spoilers

To give you an idea how potentially nuclear the information on the leaked call sheet for the season finale of Lost is, upon seeing the following link, Movieline senior editor Kyle Buchanan commented: “I’ve avoided that all weekend. I don’t want to knowwwwwwwww.” So, yeah, this is pretty serious stuff. Certainly the type of thing that Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse and the rest of ABC didn’t want to have hit the web. Or, maybe they did want this to see the light of day, since it’s all just some red herring produced by the Dharma Initiative in conjunction with Charles Widmore, The Man in Black, Nikki and Paolo. Who’s to say? Click ahead … if you dare.
